I tappeti Caucasici, i Kilim, i Sumak, i Gabbeh, l’archeologia orientale e precolombiana, il design e, non di meno, l’arte contemporanea, sono solo esempi delle innumerevoli pulsioni che, da sempre, mi coinvolgono. L’irrequietezza culturale unita alla curiosità mi hanno sempre accompagnato nei trent’anni di attività della Galleria in Corso Sant’Anastasia a Verona.

La personalità, il fascino, il mistero delle opere d’arte che incontro si trasformano, nella mia mente in altrettanti eventi culturali, espressione del desiderio di trasmettere agli altri le mie stesse emozioni.

Questa voglia di novità mi ha fatto scoprire microculture che hanno prodotto opere d’arte pressoché ignote come ad esempio i tessili in rafia del reame di Kuba nell’Africa nera od i Ru-korsi, tessuti dalle tribù uzbeke, menzionati anche in questa rassegna.

Oggi, ancora una volta, la curiosità mi ha portato a voler condividere con collaboratori, amici e clienti, una nuova esperienza: è la misteriosa ed affascinante storia dei tappeti per uso domestico Boucherouite e delle donne del Medio ed Alto Atlante marocchino che li hanno realizzati.

The Caucasian carpets, the Kilim, the Sumak, the Gabbeh, the oriental and pre-Columbian archaeology, the design and, nonetheless, the contemporary art, are just examples of the countless pulses which, since always, involve me. The cultural unrest combined with curiosity has always accompanied me during these thirty years’ activity in the Gallery in Corso Sant’Anastasia in Verona.

The personality, the charm, the mystery of the works of art I encounter become other cultural events in my mind, an expression of the wish to transmit my own emotions to the others.

This wish of novelty made me discover micro cultures that produced quite unknown works of art such as, for example, the raffia textiles of the kingdom of Kuba in the Black Africa or the Ru-korsi, fabrics of the Uzbekian tribes that are mentioned also in this exhibition.

Today, once again, the curiosity, led me to share a new experience with collaborators, friends and customers: it is the mysterious and fascinating history of the Boucherouite carpets for domestic use and of the women of the Middle and High Atlas Mountains of Morocco who made them.

Introduzione Foreword

Già da una decina d’anni notavamo, nei Suk di Marrakech e delle città vicine, dei tappeti inusuali sia per il loro aspetto grafico-cromatico, che per i materiali usati per annodarli. L’incontro con questi manufatti, negli ultimissimi anni, è divenuto sempre più frequente ed ha inevitabilmente stimolato la nostra curiosità, soprattutto per il fatto che non riuscivamo a riconoscere un comune filo conduttore che li collegasse ad un’area produttiva, ad una etnia od ad un qualsivoglia progetto.

Lentamente, e con non poca difficoltà, ci siamo resi conto di trovarci di fronte ad un “corpus” del tutto antitetico ad un’iniziativa progettuale organica: erano il frutto di creatività allo stato puro, di una straordinaria capacità di interagire con il nuovo mondo da parte di etnie che, per vari motivi, avevano visto sconvolto il proprio.

Cerchiamo, con questo percorso, di condividere assieme i valori estetici e spirituali contenuti in questi tappeti BOUCHEROUITE. For the past ten years we used to notice, in Marrakech Suk and in those of the nearby towns, some unusual carpets both for their graphic-chromatic aspect and for the materials used for knotting them. Seeing these products, during these very last years, has become more and more frequent and has inevitably spur our curiosity above all for the fact that we could not find a common thread that connected them to a production area, to an ethnic group or to whatever project.

Slowly and with many difficulties, we became aware that we were facing a “corpus” completely antithetic to an organic design initiative: they were the results of pure creativity, of an extraordinary capacity to interact with the new world by ethnic groups which, for several reasons, saw their own world shattered.

We hereby try to share with you the aesthetic and spiritual values belonging to these BOUCHEROUITE carpets.

Tradizioni tribali e riuso creativo nei tappeti Boucherouite

Molto spesso, parlando di tessili e tappeti tessuti od annodati in Marocco, si fa riferimento quasi esclusivamente alla produzione cosiddetta “berbera”. In realtà in gran parte del paese sono convissute e convivono, analogamente alla realtà medio-orientale, manifatture cosiddette “cittadine” accanto a quelle di “villaggio”, o meglio rurali, che coinvolgono numerosi gruppi di popolazione di origine araba, i cui manufatti erano, in origine, riservati all’uso domestico.

Subito dopo la fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, un consistente numero di nuclei rurali arabi, alla ricerca di migliorare le proprie condizioni di vita sempre al limite della sopravvivenza, ha iniziato a spostarsi dai villaggi insediandosi nei più vicini agglomerati urbani, seguendo un processo che, in quel momento storico, ha accomunato gran parte del pianeta. Le tradizionali pratiche che sino a quel momento ne avevano costituito la fonte alimentare, cioè una misera agricoltura e, soprattutto, la pastorizia, sono state necessariamente abbandonate. La diminuzione delle greggi di pecore ha immediatamente significato poca lana da filare e da utilizzare per tessere ed annodare .

Nel contempo le popolazioni berbere, che più propriamente dovremmo definire Amazigh cioè “uomini liberi”, spinte dalla crescente richiesta del mercato che guardava con aumentato interesse i manufatti etnici e quindi anche i tappeti, hanno intensificato l’annodatura di questi ultimi, utilizzando pertanto quei quantitativi di lana che precedentemente erano eccedenti e cercavano di collocare sul mercato come scarto oppure come filato artigianale.

Il sovrapporsi di queste due concause, la diminuzione della popolazione ovina per l’abbandono dell’allevamento da una parte, e l’aumentato impiego, all’interno dei nuclei familiari berberi, della lana da parte di chi ancora la produceva per destinarla alla tessitura ed all’annodatura in proprio, ha fatto sì che lane e filati arrivassero in quantità sempre minore sul mercato, e che, tale scarsezza, si tramutasse in notevole aumento del

Tribal traditions and creative reuse in the Boucherouite carpets

Quite often, speaking of textiles and of woven or knotted carpets in Morocco, we refer almost exclusively to the so-called “Berberian” production.

Actually, in most part of the country the so called “urban” manufactures have cohabited and still cohabit next to the “village or rural” ones that involve several populations of Arabic origin, whose products were originally manufactured only for domestic purposes; the same happens in the MiddleEast-Eastern world.

Soon after the end of the Second World War, a considerable number of Arabian rural groups, in order to improve their own life conditions always on the edge of survival, began to move away from the villages by settling in the nearby neighbourhoods, by following a process which, in that particular historical moment, has united most of the world. The traditional practices that up to that moment were the food source, that is a poor agriculture and, above all, sheep-breeding, were necessarily abandoned. The reduction of the flocks of sheep has immediately meant less wool to spin and to be used for weaving and knotting.

At the same time, the Berberian populations, which we shall call most properly Amazighr that is “free men”, urged by the growing market request that was looking with increased interest to the ethnic products and therefore also to the carpets, intensified the knotting of these last ones by using, therefore, those quantities of wool that were previously in excess and that they tried to sell on the market as scrap or as handmade yarn.

The overlapping of these two causes, the reduction of the sheep population due to the abandonment of the farming on one side and the increased use, within the Berberian familiar groups, of wool by those who still produced it in order to set it aside for weaving and for knotting on ones’ own, saw that the wools and the yarns arrived in a much smaller quantity on the market implying a considerable cost increase, thus being unaffordable for the poorest ethnic groups.

Le famiglie arabe, lo strato sociale meno abbiente, che si erano sedentarizzate all’interno o intorno agli agglomerati urbani, si sono trovate nella situazione di decidere se continuare la storica, tradizionale pratica di produrre in casa i tessili per uso domestico, e, in caso affermativo, dove e come provvedersi dei filati necessari.

In contesti sociali così poveri non si è mai gettato nulla, e le donne da sempre avevano l’abitudine di utilizzare i materiali avanzati dalla tessitura o dalla tosatura dei tappeti annodati in proprio; gli scarti non risultavano ora neppure sufficienti per produrre i pochi manufatti necessari per l’uso domestico. Si sono quindi inizialmente ingegnate riutilizzando quanto di logoro o frusto, ma di qualità, vi era in casa, disfando vecchi tessuti e ricavandone filati.

Sino a questo punto i materiali impiegati rientravano nel contesto tradizionale dei filati di lana e cotone.

Attorno al 1950 nella vasta area del Plateau Centrale marocchino, alle pendici dell’Alto Atlante, che comprende le città di Boujad e di BeniMellal perlopiù popolata da etnie di origine araba, si sono verificate tali condizioni di criticità nel reperire filati, che le annodatrici locali, spinte dalla necessità, hanno cercato altri materiali per poter continuare a produrre manufatti per uso domestico.

Dapprima vesti dismesse, brandelli di coperte, tessuti sono stati tagliati in striscioline che avessero dimensioni tali da poter essere utilizzate sia per annodare che per realizzare la struttura del tappeto; il termine Boucherouite (dall’arabo dialettale “boucharouette”) significa proprio “tessuti strappati”.

inside or around the town neighbourhoods, faced the situation whether to decide to continue the historical, traditional practice of producing the textiles for domestic use at home and, if so, where and how to find the necessary yarns.

In such poor social contexts, nothing has been thrown away, women have always been accustomed to use the left-over materials from the weaving or from the clipping of carpets knotted on one’s own; the scraps were now no more sufficient to produce the few products necessary for the domestic use. Therefore these women tried hard to reuse all that was worn-out and ragged, but of quality at home, by unknitting old fabrics and obtaining yarns.

Up to this point, the materials used were part of the traditional context of wool and cotton yarns.

Around 1950 in the wide area of the Morocco Central Plateau, at the mountainside of the High Atlas Mountains, which include the cities of Boujad and of Beni-Mellal that are mostly inhabited by ethnic groups of Arabic origin, critic conditions in finding yarns took place and the local knitters, urged by the need, looked for other materials in order to be able to continue to produce handiworks for domestic use.

At first modest garments, fabrics were cut in strips with such dimensions as to be used both for knotting and for making the carpet structure; the word Boucherouite (from the dialect Arabic “boucharouette”) means in fact “torn fabrics”.

Obviously most families did not have a sufficient quantity of such poor raw material at home or not at all, and therefore they looked for a solution elsewhere, by trying hard to find fabrics to be cut in any way. At that point, whether these were natural fibres or synthetic ones did not matter.

When one must make a virtue of necessity, a considerable quantity of

cercato altrove la soluzione al problema, ingegnandosi nel reperire in qualsiasi maniera tessuti da tagliare. A quel punto poco importava se si trattava di fibre naturali o sintetiche.

Quando bisogna fare “di necessità virtù” è indispensabile una sostanziosa dose di pragmatismo e concretezza. Basti pensare che le annodatrici di questa area, più recentemente, hanno persino impiegato i sacchi di rete sintetica, che normalmente si usano per imballare ortaggi come patate e cipolle, quali succedanei del graticcio canonicamente formato da trama e ordito, tagliandoli e cucendoli a misura, mettendoli in tensione sul telaio e procedendo poi ad inserirvi i nodi.

La ricerca di stoffe a costo zero o più basso possibile, ha portato le tessitrici ad utilizzare materiali della più disparata origine e provenienza, costringendole a confrontarsi con gamme cromatiche sconosciute ai filati tradizionali, che venivano ancora tinti con coloranti naturali. A questo punto si è concretizzata un’insospettata interazione tra necessità, coraggio ed autonomia creativa.

Va precisato che, in molte strutture sociali del Marocco, le donne hanno sempre goduto di tale autonomia, espressa attraverso tatuaggi od utilizzando un proprio libero linguaggio con il quale decorare ceramiche e tessili. Decorare tuttavia è un termine riduttivo, impiegato da europei ed anglosassoni per definire l’uso di segni e forme che in alcuni contesti hanno significati ben più profondi e spirituali del loro semplice, manuale trasferimento su una superficie, in quanto la tessitrice rurale trasmette sul manufatto la propria personalità, leggendo il presente con le radici del passato. Mentre annoda o tesse, crea uno spazio al cui interno affida la propria interiorità, costruita sì su un patrimonio identitario, ma sensibile ai traumi dovuti a cambiamenti talvolta per lei epocali. È stata la medesima spinta che ha provocato, in alcuni tappeti Gabbeh del sud della Persia, la parziale rivisitazione della simbologia, con l’inserimento dei nuovi mezzi di trasporto (camion, aerei, etc.) il cui incontro ha rappresentato, negli anni ‘40, uno shock tale da essere fissato nella memoria attraverso l’unico mezzo quasi fotografico disponibile.

pragmatism and concreteness is necessary. Let’s think that the knitters in this area most recently have also used bags of synthetic resin that are usually employed to pack vegetables such as potatoes and onions, as substitutes for the rack usually made up of warp and weft, by cutting and sewing them to measure, by tensioning them on the loom and by later inserting the knots.

The search for fabrics at zero cost or at a very cheap price, led the weavers to use the most varied materials, thus compelling them to face chromatic colour ranges unknown to the traditional yarns, which were still dyed with natural colours. At this point, an unexpected interaction among necessity, courage and creative autonomy took place.

It should be underlined that, in many social structures of Morocco, women have always enjoyed such autonomy, expressed through tattoos or using their own free language with which decorate ceramics or textiles. To decorate, however, is a reductive term, which is used by the European and Anglo-Saxons in order to define the use of signs and shapes that in some contexts have much more deeper and spiritual meanings than their simple, manual transfer onto a surface, because the rural weaver transmits its own personality onto the manufacture, by reading the present with the roots of the past. While she knots, she creates a space inside of which she entrusts her interiority that is built on an identity heritage, sensible though to the changes that sometimes are for her epoch-making.

It is the same push that caused, in some Gabbeh carpets of Southern Persia, the partial review of symbology, with the insertion of the new means of transport (trucks, airplanes etc.) whose meeting represents in the forties such a shock as to be fixed in memory through the only almost photographic mean available.

The same applies to the “War Rugs� in Afghanistan, not only for the fact that war was unknown, but also for the amazement caused by the new war instruments.

When crystallized social structures witness, sometimes also dramatically, the disruption of the rhythms marking their everyday life, if they have the possibility, they externalize their own interior feelings by transferring them

Lo stesso si può dire per i “War Rugs” in Afghanistan (tappeti di guerra), non tanto per il fatto che la guerra non fosse conosciuta, anzi, bensì per lo stupore indotto dai nuovi strumenti bellici.

Quando strutture sociali cristallizzate vedono sconvolti, spesso in maniera drammatica, i ritmi che scandiscono la loro quotidianità, se ne hanno la possibilità, esteriorizzano i propri moti interiori trasferendoli tramite l’unico glossario con cui hanno confidenza, quello dei segni.

All’interno di questi contesti è la donna che da sempre rappresenta la cassaforte ove viene custodita una storia non scritta, testimoniata attraverso un linguaggio simbolico e dinamico al tempo stesso, e pertanto modificabile e modificato in relazione al succedersi degli eventi.

Proviamo ad immaginare la condizione di una donna araba che si è da poco trasferita nella periferia di Boujad da un villaggio alle pendici dell’AltoAtlante. In aggiunta a tutti gli altri problemi quotidiani, deve anche creare e sostituire uno o più manufatti sui quali dormire, mangiare o da utilizzare per altre funzioni domestiche. Ha a disposizione del materiale inusuale sia come filato che come colori, assolutamente estraneo al proprio tradizionale modo di lavorare al telaio. Le nuove condizioni di vita le hanno provocato un tumulto interiore che esprime, o meglio sfoga sul telaio attraverso un corrispondente tumulto cromatico, creando un autonomo nuovo linguaggio, nato dall’interazione fra un patrimonio identitario e la confusa mescolanza delle nuove esperienze. Affida la descrizione del caos interiore che sta vivendo al caos cromatico e fisico delle materie prime che è riuscita a mettere insieme.

Quanto vi sia di cosciente in questo processo crediamo sia difficile da individuare.

Tuttavia la donna si rende conto che la sua deve essere una reazione positiva e quindi provvede a darsi un metodo, un ordine. La sensazione infatti che abbiamo ricavato quando abbiamo incontrato gli esemplari più vecchi, e pertanto più genuini, è stata quella di trovarci di fronte ad un “caos ordinato”. Il che sembrerebbe una contraddizione, se non fosse per il fatto che il “corpus” costituito dai Boucherouite parrebbe rappresentare un grande controsenso, un paradosso all’interno dell’immaginario che comunemente conserviamo riguardo il tappeto annodato.

through the only glossary they are familiar with, that of the signs.

Within these contexts, it is the woman who always represents the safe where an unwritten history is kept, which is witnessed through a symbolic and, at the same time, dynamic language that may be changed according to the succession of events.

Let’s try to imagine the conditions of an Arabic woman who has just arrived in the periphery of Boujad from a village at the mountainside of the High Atlas Mountains. Besides all the other daily problems, she must also create and replace one or more manufactures on which to sleep, to eat or to use for other domestic functions. She has available unusual material both as yarn and as colours, which is absolutely unfamiliar to her own traditional way of working at the loom. The new conditions of life causes her an interior stir which she expresses, or better pours out on the loom through a corresponding chromatic stir, by creating an autonomous new language born from the interaction between an identity heritage and the confused mixing of the new experiences. She entrusts the description of the interior chaos she is experiencing to the chromatic and physical chaos of the raw materials she has found.

We do believe it is difficult to detect how much she is aware of this process.

However, the woman realizes that her reaction is positive and therefore she sees to arrange a method, an order. The sensation, in fact, we got when we saw the oldest examples, and therefore the most genuine ones, was that of facing an “ordered chaos”. This might appear a contradiction, unless for the fact that the “corpus” made up of the Boucherouite might represent a great countersense, a paradox within the imaginary that we commonly have for the knotted carpet.

Segni e colori: il linguaggio segreto delle donne berbere

Verso gli anni ‘90 anche numerose popolazioni berbere, o meglio Amazigh, in particolare del Medio Atlante, si sono accorte del crescente interesse del mercato per i Boucherouite, e ne hanno iniziato a loro volta la produzione. Va precisato che in questo caso la motivazione è stata principalmente di ordine economico, e quindi l’utilizzo di questi manufatti non era più, o meglio non solo, domestico. Questo fatto avrebbe potuto rappresentare un impoverimento dei significati, dei valori aggiunti con i quali le annodatrici di Boujad e Beni-Mellal avevano iniziato la loro avventura.

Ora, per maggior chiarezza, si impone una puntualizzazione riguardo il significato, ancora attuale, dell’arte tessile fra le donne berbere, fra le quali la cultura araba non è mai penetrata. Per loro tessere è un modo di vivere, un rito.

Gli spazi che destinano ai telai, interni alle abitazioni se fissi, esterni se mobili sono, anche ai giorni nostri, un microcosmo esclusivamente femminile, e, come tale, intimamente, gelosamente, intensamente interpretato, sentito, vissuto. Tali aree sono fortemente spiritualizzate, e lo stesso dicasi per le diverse fasi della tessitura ad iniziare dal valore attribuito alla lana, considerata come un dono divino. Il manufatto, via via che prende forma, acquisisce, nella mente di chi sta annodando, un’anima verso la quale si nutre crescente rispetto, ed alla quale vengono richieste benevolenza e protezione. Il procedere dell’annodatura è accompagnato dalla recitazione di formule per intensificare, per stringere un sempre maggior rapporto personale con il tappeto.

Esiste quindi una sorta di interdipendenza fra l’arte tessile e le donne berbere che la praticano in quanto, attraverso questa attività esse acquisiscono prestigio e considerazione, il che eleva socialmente le migliori.

Signs and colours: the secret language of the Berberian women

Towards the ‘90 also the several Berberian populations, or better Amazigh, in particular of the Middle Atlas Mountains, were aware of the growing interest of the market for the Boucherouite, and therefore they started the production in turn. It should be underlined, in this case, that the reason was mainly economic, and therefore the use of these products was not, or better not only, for domestic purposes. This fact might represent an impoverishment of the meanings, of the added values with which the knitters of Boujad and Beni-Mellal had starter their adventure.

Now, for more precision, it is necessary a clarification as regards the meaning, which is still up-to-date, of the textile art among the Berberian women, among whom the Arabic culture never penetrated. Weaving, for them, is a way of living, a rite.

The spaces set for the looms, inside the houses if fixed, and outside if mobile, are, also nowadays, an exclusively feminine microcosm and as such, intimately, jealously, intensively interpreted, felt and lived. Such areas are strongly spiritualized, and the same applies to the different phases of weaving, starting from the values attributed to wool, which is considered as a divine gift. The manufacture, taking shape little by little, acquires, in the mind of who is knotting, a soul towards which one nourishes a growing respect, and to which benevolence and protection are required.

The knotting is accompanied by the recitation of formulas in order to intensify and strengthen a greater personal relationship with the carpet.

There exists, therefore, a kind of interdependence between the textile art and the Berberian women practicing it, in so far, through this activity, they acquire prestige and consideration, thus socially elevating the best ones.

All these conditions, that are still existing nowadays, made weaving and knotting a not

condizioni ha fatto sì che tessere ed annodare costituiscano per le tessitrici berbere una necessità non puramente economica, perché, attraverso questa pratica, continuano a godere di uno spazio autonomo con il quale esse, non alfabetizzate, riescono a comunicare esprimendosi con un loro codice segreto, fatto di segni e colori.

A prima vista potrebbe sembrare che questi tappeti rappresentino una chiusura con il passato. In realtà le annodatrici, dimostrano una straordinaria capacità di rinnovamento: adattano, reinventano, riciclano loro stesse, adeguando in parte vecchie formule espressive, nel generale rispetto di quanto per loro l’annodatura rappresenta. È il rapporto spirituale che si instaura ogni qualvolta iniziano un manufatto, il “sentire” quello che stanno costruendo, il godere appieno almeno della libertà di annodare, che continua ad attribuire una freschezza, una genuinità, una spontaneità quasi primordiali ai loro tessili.

In un contesto di mercato nel quale il tappeto, dal Dopoguerra in poi, ha seguito un percorso produttivo formalmente impeccabile, tuttavia asettico se non talora vuoto, queste strutture sociali, tutt’ora così fragili economicamente, ci continuano invece a stupire con la loro emozionante creatività.

merely economic need for the weavers because, through this practice, they still enjoy an autonomous space with which they, being illiterate, are able to communicate by expressing themselves with their own secret code made up of signs and colours.

At first sight, it looks like these carpets represent a closing with the past. Actually, the knitters, show an extraordinary capacity of renewal: they adapt, reinvent and recycle themselves, by adjusting in part old expressive formulas, generally respecting what knotting means to them. It is a spiritual relationship taking place any time they start a manufacture, “feeling� what they are making, fully enjoying the freedom of knotting, which keeps attributing a almost primeval freshness, an authenticity, a spontaneity to their textiles.

In a context where the carpet, from the After War period afterwards, has followed a formally flawless production course, however aseptic if not sometimes empty, these social structures, which are still economically fragile, continue to amaze us with their moving creativity.

L’arte del riciclo nelle diverse culture

Riciclare: nonostante sia un verbo col quale conviviamo quotidianamente, in realtà si tratta di un neologismo dal momento che in un nostro autorevole dizionario del 1964 non vi compare. Un neologismo che si presta ad una straordinaria quantità di letture. Al momento della pubblicazione di questo catalogo, lo troviamo in particolare associato a due prodotti assolutamente antitetici: i rifiuti ed il denaro (qualcuno osserverà con malizia che non sono poi così antitetici...).

Nonostante il conio molto recente di questo termine e la sua attuale e comune applicazione, che vediamo in contesti generalmente sgradevoli, dobbiamo riconoscere che il “riciclo” esiste, fortunatamente, nel nostro pianeta da sempre: lo stesso uomo è, in diversa misura, un “riciclatore”.

Non vi è stata struttura sociale che non abbia più o meno inconsapevolmente riciclato, ad iniziare da quella particella che ne costituisce l’elemento essenziale: la famiglia. Citiamo ad esempio il riutilizzo (infatti allora non si parlava ancora di riciclo) dei vestiti. Riutilizzo che non rappresentava solo ed unicamente un momento di semplice risparmio economico. Pensiamoci assieme un attimo: “Era del nonno”. Con questa frase si spiritualizzava quanto ci veniva assegnato.

Il bene assumeva un significato ed un valore immutabili, era il tramite attraverso cui un processo identitario trovava continuità, e con lui assicurava tangibilità alla memoria.

Questa lettura del riciclaggio è trasversale ad una moltitudine di strutture sociali.

In seguito il fenomeno ha assunto, in tutto od in parte, significati diversi, compresi quelli che citavamo inizialmente.

Essendo questo nostro percorso limitato ai tessili, abbiamo cercato di reperire esempi analoghi del loro riciclaggio, originari di culture e/o realtà sociali molto diverse tra loro.

Iniziamo con qualcosa di casalingo: i “Pezzotti” valtellinesi, attualmente prodotti di industria od artigianato. In realtà la loro origine va ricondotta

The art of recycle in the different cultures

Recycling: notwithstanding the fact that is a verb with which we coexist daily, actually it is a neologism, since that this word does not appear in a famous dictionary dated 1964. A neologism that may be interpreted in thousands of way. When this catalogue is published, we find it specially associated with two absolutely antithetic products: waste and money (someone will notice with malice that they are not actually antithetic...).

Notwithstanding the recent origin of this word and its present and common use, which we usually notice in unpleasant contexts, we must acknowledge that, luckily, the “recycle” has been always existing on our planet: man himself is, to a different extent, a “recycler”.

Any social structure has unconsciously recycled more or less, starting from that particle constituting the essential element: family. We cite, for example, the reuse (the word recycle was not used yet) of clothes. Reuse that did not represent only and exclusively a moment of simple economic saving.

Let’s think about it for a moment: “It belonged to grandfather”. With these words what was given us was spiritualized.

The item acquired an eternal meaning and value, it was the means through which an identity process found continuity, thanks to which it granted tangibility o memory. This way of interpreting recycling is transversal to a multitude of social structures.

Later on the phenomenon acquired, in all or in part, different meanings, including those we previously cited.

Being this a course limited to textiles, we tried to find similar examples of their recycling, originals of cultures and/or social realities that are very different among them.

Let’s start with something domestic: the “Pezzotti” from Valtellina, industrial or artisan products.

Actually their origin goes back to the “Pelorsc”, fabrics created at home for domestic purposes. In particular for packing and transporting hay, obtained by recycling and sewing together rags.

ai “Pelorsc”, tessuti creati in casa per la casa, in particolare per imballare e trasportare il fieno, ottenuti riciclando e cucendo assieme cenci o stracci.

Alla più autentica tradizione uzbeka vanno riferiti i “Ru-khorsi”, stupendi, quasi folgoranti manufatti ricavati ricucendo pezzi di tessuto tradizionali per la gran parte in seta e lavorati con tecnica “Ikat”. Servivano a coprire interamente sino a terra bassi tavoli, sotto i quali veniva collocato un bacile colmo di braci, e rappresentavano una oasi di confortante calore al cui interno ristorare mani e piedi durante i rigidissimi periodi invernali.

In nord America ricordiamo i “Quilts” e gli “Hooks”. I primi consistevano in variopinte coperte da letto, ricavate cucendo assieme pezze di stoffa. I secondi erano tappeti con il vello ottenuto facendo passare fra trama e ordito anelli di filato, utilizzando un uncino (hook). Da sottolineare che negli esemplari più vecchi, trama e ordito erano semplicemente ricavati dall’utilizzo di semplici sacchi di juta.

In Giappone sono stati prodotti i “Boro”, perlopiù coperte ma anche indumenti, per ottenere i quali si assemblavano pezzi di abiti in cotone (prodotto localmente in quantità limitatissima) importati dall’occidente.

Questi manufatti sono sfuggiti sinora all’interesse del grande mercato, e quindi alla replicazione massiccia che in genere ne consegue quando aumenta la domanda.

Da citare infine alcune recentissime collezioni comparse nel mondo della moda, proposte da giovani stilisti che hanno riciclato abiti dimessi, tovaglie, canovacci od altri tessili usati, trasformandoli in proposte “haute couture”.

The wonderful “Ru-khorsi” shall be referred to the most authentic Uzbekian tradition, almost striking manufactures obtained by sewing again pieces of traditional fabric mostly of silk and worked with the “Ikat” technique. They were used to cover low tables completely to the floor, below which a container full of coals was laid, and these represented a comfortable heat source where to warm hands and feet during the very severe winters.

In North America we shall remember the “Quilts” and the “Hooks”.

The first ones consisted in multicoloured bed blankets, obtained by sewing together pieces of fabrics. The second ones were carpets with fleece obtained my passing yarn rings through warp and weft, by using a hook. It is worth mentioning that in the oldest ones, warp and weft were simply obtained by the use of simple jute.

In Japan the “Boro”, which are mostly blankets but also clothes, were produced. Pieces of cotton clothes were assembled together (product which was locally produced in a very limited quantity) imported from the West.

Until now, these products escaped the interest of the big market and, therefore, the massive replication usually following the growing of demand.

Then it is worth citing some very recent collections appeared in the fashion world proposed by young stylists who recycled modest garments, tablecloths, dishcloths or other worn textiles, by transforming them in “haute couture” proposals.

“L’arte contemporanea” dei Boucherouite

L’arte, nella sua più ampia accezione, è un perpetuo rinnovamento di mezzi e tecniche espressive, sino a giungere all’estrema conseguenza di considerare il solo rinnovamento, come unica arte possibile.

Nella continua ricerca di nuovi linguaggi attraverso i quali poter comunicare le proprie esperienze, dalla fine del XIX secolo molti dei più grandi Maestri hanno guardato con crescente interesse a forme artistiche “altrui”. Ricordiamo fra i mostri sacri Pablo Picasso, il quale ha portato a termine la creazione delle “Demoiselles d’Avignon” solo dopo aver potuto studiare alcune maschere africane, ed Henry Moore, che ha ricavato il principio ispiratore del suo “Negative Space” dall’arte precolombiana, in particolare dalle giade della Mesoamerica. Per rimanere all’interno dell’ambito più strettamente collegato a questa nostra mostra, artisti come Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Le Corbusier sono stati sicuramente influenzati dalla grafica dei tappeti berberi. Le Corbusier stesso, per altro, li collezionava. Nel 1911, dopo un viaggio nell’Europa orientale, tornato ad insegnare alla scuola delle Belle Arti di La Chaux de Fonds in Svizzera, teorizzava ai suoi studenti: “...fare come le donne berbere, unire alla geometria la più incredibile fantasia”.

Tuttavia, a nostro parere, i riferimenti maggiori, seppure inconsapevoli e casuali, fra il contesto culturale al cui interno sono nati i Boucherouite ed un movimento artistico li vediamo nel Dadaismo. La filosofia che ha originato la corrente Dada ha come presupposto la consapevolezza dell’individuo del proprio libero arbitrio, che viene esplicitato attraverso qualsiasi gesto, meglio se al di là, “oltre” le regole del canonico linguaggio espressivo, meglio ancora soprattutto se totalmente scollegato da qualsiasi relazione tra causa ed effetto. L’artista Dada utilizza il collage ed il riciclaggio come strumenti per scardinare le regole legate alle tradizionali tecniche gestuali, spogliando coscientemente, volutamente i materiali e gli oggetti che utilizza della loro funzionalità, per provocare, dalla consapevolezza della loro conseguente inutilità, emozioni intime.

Achille Bonito Oliva definisce la strategia Dada “consapevolezza culturale e accettazione dell’imprevisto”. E francamente non sapremmo trovare migliori parole che ci possano accompagnare durante il percorso di questa mostra.

“The contemporary art” of the Boucherouite

Art, in its widest meaning, is a constant renewal of means and expressive techniques, until the extreme consequence of considering the only renewal as the only possible art is reached.

In the constant search for new languages through which communicate one’s own experiences, starting from the end of the XIX century, many of the greatest Masters looked with growing interest to “someone else’s” artistic shapes. Just remember among these Pablo Picasso, a legend in this field, who created “Demoiselles d’Avignon” only after he studied some African masks, and Henry Moore, who got his inspiring principle of its “Negative Space” from the Pre-Columbian art, in particular from the jades of Mesoamerica. To stay within the scope more strictly connected to this exhibition, artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Le Corbusier were certainly influenced by the graphics of the Berberian carpets. Le Corbusier himself, among other things, collected them. In 1911, after a trip to Eastern Europe, back to teach at the School of Fine Arts of La Chaux de Fonds in Switzerland, he taught to his students: “...do as the Berberian women, combine the most incredible fantasy with geometry”.

However, in our opinion, the greatest references, though unaware and casual, between the cultural context where the Boucherouite were born and an artistic movement, are found in Dadaism. The philosophy that originates the Dada current is based on the awareness of the individual of his own free will, which is expressed through any gesture, better if beyond the rules of the standard expressive language, better if this is, above all, totally disconnected from any relation between cause and effect. The Dada artist uses the collage and the recycling as instruments for undermining the rules connected to the traditional sign techniques, by consciously and willingly stripping the materials and the objects he uses of their functionality in order to arouse, from the awareness of the their consequent uselessness, private emotions.

Achille Bonito Oliva defines the Dada strategy “cultural awareness and acceptance of the unexpected”. And, frankly speaking, we could not find better words accompanying us during this exhibition.
