Alebrijes originated in Mexico City in the 20th century, in 1936.

They are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical (fantasy/mythical) creatures. Today, Jacobo and Maria Angeles, as creative leaders, they have built a community that develops more than a hundred creative collaborators from approximately twelve communities close to the population that are inspired by the values of thee Guelaguetza, with a purpose in mind, living with the principles of community.
