From the Headmaster Already the School has made its mark in the new millennium. There \sere, first, the VCE results with the 1000/c pass rate, the top third of candidates with ENTER scores above 90, the 440/ of all grades in the A category and the highest scores of Dux (and Captain of Swimming) Scott Wilson (9980) and Runner-Up Jarrad Morgan (99.55): secondly, the brilliant form of our sportsmen who have clearly won the first AGSV Tennis Premiership since the 80's, and who have (as I write) very nearly wrapped up the Cricket and the Basketball as well; thirdly, the great occasions at Melbourne Park where, between the curtain-raiser AGSV matches in which Mentone Grammar participated and the main Titans' matches. Dale (IC Silva of Year 12 together with the splendid, newly-constituted School Band thrilled thousands of spectators with the National Anthem and incidental music: fourthly. the presentation to the School of the 243 Karl Duldig Drawings done by our most famous Art Master, the Viennese-Australian sculptor and drawer Karl Duldig (staff. 19451967) drawings which have been carefully preserved and generously gifted

by Karl's permission and through the kind and good offices of his daughter. Eva de Jong-Duldig: and finally, for this list, the memorable presentations of key speakers of Superintendent Phillip Hutson, direct from the carnage of East Timor with a Distinguished Service Award to add to this Old Mentonian's other policing distinctions; of Dr. André La Gerche, Head Prefect of 1991 and triathlete, whose concise and brilliant discourse on "passion"

1999 was generally a very successful year for our affiliated sporting clubs: runners up in Football (and promotion to B grade), a strong finish in First Division for Soccer and a sensational year for Hockey, intermingled with mixed summer Basketball results four grand finals for the Juniors, not so the Seniors and a disappointing season for the Cricket Club.

Congratulations to the successful teams and good luck to all for 20001.

On a warm day in early March, the school celebrated the 77th anniversary of its founding.

This year, the Founder's Day Address was given

by Old Mentonian André La Gerche (1991) who provided inspiration to his (mainly) young audience when he spoke on the virtues of 'passion'.

André's closing comments summed up his philosophy "work hard at those things you enjoy and experience the evolution of a passion. The result will not ony be satisfaction and fulfilment for you, but an inspiration to others". ...

Karl Duldig Drawings 1945-1967 On the eve of the school's 77th Founders Day celebration, the Mentonc Grammar Foundation hosted a presentation

by Mrs. Eva de Jong-Duldig. of 243 drao ings gifted to the school by her late father.

Karl was Art Master from 1945 tol9G7 and his collection of drawings of the school and its surrounds along with students and fellow teachers represents a wonderful historical insight into his time at the school.

The distinguished guest list included Ms. Irena Zdanowicz, Senior Curator of Prints and Drawings at the National Gallery of Victoria and Mr. Allan Mitelman, Art Lecturer and former pupil of Karl Duldig.

Mrs. de Jong-Duldig spoke eloqucnt}\ about her father and his work and as part of her presentation, the enthralled audience greatly enjoyed her expert explanations of the selection of drawings displayed in Thorold Hail and the 'sneak preview of the CD-Rom that has been made of the collection.

Mr. Mick White, Director of the Foundation and Past Chairman of the Board of Management, accepted the gift on behall of the Foundation. Mr. Roiy Wettenhal I. Chairman of the Board and a past student ot Karl's himself, shared his reminiscences of Karl and of the school in those days.

Following the formal presentations. the evening concluded with a delicious supper and guests old and young had the chance to meet and talk about 'old times'.

Superintendent Phillip Hutson (father of Tim Year S and Michael Year Ii) recentl visited the school to speak to the Year 12 students about his experiences in East Timor. The Superintendent is an officer of ' the Australian Federal Police and worked for the United Nations while in East Timor.

He talked about his compound beine attacked and destroyed by the Militia a! IIC: the Timorese vote for independence and the shootings, assaults and arson in Malian. where he was stationed. He also recalled the evacuation of Dili, and enthralled Iii aug audience w i th his reminiscences.

The Papua New Guinea EXP

Reverend Roger Williams (our school chaplain) has taken school tour groups from Melbourne and other parts of Australia, to visit Papua New Guinea.

The groups have visited Martyrs' Memorial School Popondetta, Holy Name School Dogura, and many villages, calling at places of historical and cultural interest.

As a result of these earlier visits, it became obvious to Reverend Williams that students had much to gain both in personal confidence and in learning valuable life lessons, by witnessing the customs and values of the people of PNG. As time and the years passed, great interest in these trips grew, so that in recent years, he included visits to the local people in the more remote areas. Therefore the school trip now travels over the Kokoda Track, visits villages for an extended stay in areas such as Cape Vogel, and travels to New Ireland (an island rarely seen by visitors to PNG).

is able to share the 'Land of the Unexpected' with students and teachers alike.

In 1999, several Mentone Grammar students accompanied the Reverend's trips to PNG. In July and again in September, our students, joined by students from three other Melbourne schools Melbourne Grammar, Melbourne Girls Grammar and Mentone Girls' Grammar headed off in their school holidays.

These groups walked the Kokoda Track (one of the world's most difficult walks), visited schools, lived in remote villages (alone or in groups of three or four), rode Mountain Bikes down the coast of a remote island, and sea-kayaked to their bean's content.

The students and teachers found a people able to teach us much about family life a rich culture, spirituality, generosity and con-

tentment. All of the students noticed the differences between the two cultures our material emphasis, our reserved nature, and our often false sense of priorities, as opposed to their generous and genuine natures.

On many occasions, the groups were embarrassed and humbled by the considerable efforts made by local people to provide for them and how on leaving the villages, they were showered with gifts such as handmade necklaces, Tapa cloth and shells.

Papua New Guinea is certainly the Land of the Unexpected it has provided a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity for many Melbourne and Victorian students to look at themselves with greater insight and depth than they ever thought possible.

As one returning student said, "Thank you to the people of Papua New Guinea we look forward to renewing our friendship in the future".

We all loaded up, 20kg in all 10 metres uphill and we were starting to crawl.

Alt/tough stalking the Track is ton ph, it is a great experience. The people you met from PNG are so kind to all who pass through their villages. The peopie of PNG are not at all similar to the peapie of Melbourne. they are happy with the basic essentials of life .thocl and wade!: These people live off the land, and vet they are coil/cut with this basic, yet tong/i 4/estvle.

Welcome to Ventura Late last year, a group of students provided a body of artwork for display in The George Adams Gallery at the Victorian Arts Centre as part of the We are Australian exhibition. Following this most successful showing. the school was again honoured to accept the invitation to display these same pieces in A Youthful View exhibition at the Telstra Centre in the city. A Youthful View, sponsored by Melbourne Rotary, is part of the United Nations Harmony Day 2000, which was declared on 21 March 2000, the international day for the elimination of racial discrimination.Jason Nanayakkara (Year 8) was on hand at the official opening to accept participation certificates on behalf of the school and to speak on his feelings, thoughts and hopes for Australia of people living, working and learning together in harmony.

From the beginning of 2000, the school entered into a new bus arrangement with local firm Ventura. Ventura has been a family-business for the past 75 years and is owned and operated by the Cornwall family. As part of the agreement, we were given the opportunity to sign-write a message on the back of one of the buses, seen here in Lucerne Street.

In January, the 1st XI cricket squad travelled to Tasmania in preparation for resumption of the AGS competition.

The tour started in Hobart where the team stayed in the Hutchins School boarding house. The squad was fortunate to see India v Pakistan at Bellerive Oval and to watch Shoaib Ahktar bowling at Sachin Tendulkar. Their own tour started on a positive note when they defeated Hutchins by 7 wickets.

Then on to Launceston for the remaining four days. The team easily defeated Scotch Oakburn by a massive 198 runs and then won close encounters against both Launceston Grammar and St. Patrick's College.

cricketer of the future John Seeary is a fiery, red-headed. 1 7 year old fast howler who has achies ed many accolades for his fine bowling oser the past three seasons for Mentone Grammar let XI. This has culminated in John being selected as 1st XI Co-Captain in his fourth and final season. John also represents South Melbourne in the Premier League cricket competition, the highest club competition in Victoria. John played his first game in the 1St XI for South Melbourne last October while still in Year II and at the age of only 16. Further to this success. John recently represented Victoria in the U17 Australian Championships where he bowled accurately and economically with good pace, to help the Victorians remain undefeated and win the Championship.

John has also represented the AGSV I XI and the VIS U19 1st XI in a number of games. We expect him to be selected for the next AGSV 1st XI team due to his fine performances for the school this season. He has taken 27 AGSV wickets in only six games at an average of only 6.0. including an amazing 8/15 against Yarra Valley.

Overall, lie has taken 39 wickets this season at an average of 6.3 runs per wicket.

Equally impressive is his accuracy, highheisted by the very low 1.7 runs per MCI-

What the new team lacks in experience they inure than make up for in enthusiasm. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Patricia and Rosemary again for the gracious and very generous way in which they handed over to me.

The first function for the new committee was the 1999 Christmas Luncheon. It was a lovely day with the Senior Flute Ensemble entertaining the guests as they arrived and then Year 4 continued their tradition, Presenting a selection of Christmas Carols. We farewel led committee members who were leaving and welcomed the team for 2000.

At the beginning of Term One, Janet Buswell (our Treasurer) and I enjoyed meeting our new school families at Orientation Day. And, just two weeks into the Term, we had our Welcoming Luncheon, which this year featured "The Year of the Dragon" as our theme. We enjoyed Gin and Tonics and Champagne with sLislli, while we were entertained by pianist Konrad Dorecki (Year 8). Then, tenor David Hamilton thrilled us With four songs ranging from opera to a Scottish traditional song that he dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. Clark. Reverend Roger Williams' luncheon address provided it very moving insight into his experiences of Papua New Guinea. The luncheon concluded with our usual raffle and tea and coffee with fortune cookies.

Jodie joins us with a wealth of experience, having been a student of drama at St. Martins, Peter Sardi School of Drama and Nida, as well as producing and appearing in a number of plays, feature films and on television. Other interests include swimming. riding, travelling and playing the African drums! We'll look forward to hearing those if Jodie can work them into a school performance some time

FIONA KING

Fiona was born in the Snowy Mounta i ns with her early childhood spent living in the Kosciusko National Park. This had a profound effect on her life, nurturing a concern for the environment.

Her teaching career has included stints in a girls' school, a boys' school and two co-ed schools, and Fiona has been it coordinator of L.O.T.E. in two schools, and an assessor for all the VCE L.O.T.E. CATs. Fiona enjoys cooking, live theatre, travelling, music, gardening, courtesy and generosity and attributes her love of languages to her valuable time spent studying overseas.

George's responsibilities include Year 12 Accounting and Business Management, Year 10 Commerce and Year 9 Maths.

George has been involved in education for 14 years. and for the last If), he has taught boys.

Married to Anastasia and with a 5 year old son, George enjoys keeping Ot, reading biographies and going to the theatre.

JASON BURGESS

Following a visit to Australia a couple of years ago with his Australian wife Tonia, Jason decided this was the place for him. So after teaching at an inner London school for the past five years. his move now finds him enjoying life at Mentone Grammar. Jason is the father of James. 6 months, and he enjoys playing several sports. He has a love of music, having played the drums in church worship bands for the past 12 years. He confesses to enjoying a good glass of wine and is looking forward to visiting some of our exceptional wine producing areas.

BRONWYN HEATH

Bronwyn is a cellist who graduated with a Bachelor of Education in Secondary Music in 1987, and has taught in Victorian schools ever since. She started in the Western District town of Timboon, where she also met her husband and persuaded him to return to Melbourne with her. Recently Bronwyn was Head of Performing Arts at Mt. Eliza Secondary College.

Bronwyn joins us with a particular interest in boys and their education, having three young sons herself. (The oldest is currently enjoying Year 1 in Sub-Primary with Mrs. Hirst.)

GARY COLLING

The Year 2000 is Gary's first back at teaching after a ten year 'sabbatical', working with the St. Kilda Football Club. During that time, Gary held several positions as Football Operations Manager (8 years), Fitness Adviser and Assistant Coach.

Prior to this. Gary taught in the state system both as a TAFE and secondary trained teacher. He enjoys water sports, music and travel (most recently a trip to Cuba) and has three children two sons and a daughter.

Jillian enjoys her work in the SubPrimary and she also enjoys travelling, with a particular wish to see as many natural wonders of the world as possible. She has already seen The Great Barrier Reef and the Grand Canyon and is looking forward to planning visits to the River Nile and The Pamukkale Springs in Turkey.

Jillian also lists her pastimes as cooking, eating out and entertaining friends but her favourite enjoyment is walking her clog on Rickets Point beach the simple things in life are often the best!

Friends of the Performing Arts Friends of the Performing Arts FOPA is a group of parents and friends of Mentone Grammar formed with the aim of encouraging and supporting music and drama at the school. In recent times, our fundraising has provided a new grand piano and new curtains for Thorold Hall, annual junior and senior prizes for music and drama, along with various instruments and equipment for both Music Departments.

Our support of music and drama sees us selling tickets, serving refreshments, organising props and costuming and working backstage at many events, and assisting with the entertainment at the fete. We raise funds by holding supper/movie nights each term an annual May event, and by making group bookings for major musical productions.

David is a teacher, actor, writer, singer, video producer and software developer. His educational credits include a Masters of Educational Studies from Monash, five textbooks for the secondary English classroom and the development of educational software. As a performer, David has sung on the Concert Hall stage in Melbourne, had small roles in Blue Heelers and Neighbours and been active in amateur theatre. He has performed most of the Gilbert & Sullivan repel'toire, but prefers the Sonclheim musicals. We all look forward to David conveying his love of literature and the theatre to the Mentone Grammar community.

During First Term, FOPA held a movie night at the Dendy Brighton to see 'The Hurricane', and also hosted a group to see 'The Sound of Music' (this one was so popular, it will be repeated in Term Two!). Coming up is a night to see 'Anything Goes' at the Alexander Theatre. Monash University, on Friday 2 June. (Please telephone if you'd care to join us.)

FOPA is keen to see more members join, so if you son is involved in performing arts in the school, or if you just want to make new friends, you will be most welcome.

PENNY BEARD

Penny, who has a Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) and a Bachelor of Education (Primary and Secondary), has been seen around the Junior School since last April, however this year is her first full time appointment, as a Grade 6 teacher. Penny has travelled extensively overseas and has played a number of sports competitively in the past. Last year, she achieved a Gold Award in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.
