SHOWCASE SUMMER PROGRAM

DATE Saturday 14 March 2026

TIME 10.00 – 11.00am

LOCATION Creativity Centre, Mentone Grammar

Welcome to the S.M.A.R.T. Program

The S.M.A.R.T. Program is a cocurricular program, running adjacent to the Saturday Sports Program, which provides students in Years 8-12 with the opportunity to participate annually in one season of a cocurricular pursuit in lieu of a Saturday Sport.

Our S.M.A.R.T. Program is designed to enable students to discover and cultivate their cocurricular talents, under the guidance of Specialist Facilitators. Courses within S.M.A.R.T. are determined by the interests of students and made available to students based on that interest.

This season, students in the S.M.A.R.T. Program have worked extremely hard across all areas and they, their Facilitators and myself, are proud to invite you all to our Summer 2026 S.M.A.R.T. Program Showcase.

Cameron Lancaster Acting Head of S.M.A.R.T. Program

CYBER

PROGRAM INFORMATION

S.M.A.R.T. Cyber aims to develop skills in cybersecurity and its fields, including open-source intelligence (OSINT), cryptography, steganography, reverse engineering and website exploitation. This helps to facilitate a deeper understanding of the threats of today’s modern technology-based world, while simultaneously offering students with experience for modern careers in the IT field.

The summer season allows students to further explore and improve in preparation for competitions mainly held over the winter season, including the Australian Schools Cyber Challenge and the PECAN+ capture-the-flag competition.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

S.M.A.R.T. Robotics gave students the opportunity to design their own programs without any prior experience. With our Sphero educational robots, students explored their capabilities - movement, display, sound, sensors - and learned the fundamentals of coding. They also learned basic computer logic using different simulators (including Minecraft!) and began to learn breadboarding.

For their showcase, they have put together a variety show to demonstrate the robots and their learning.

• Selena Soh (9)

• Rowan Tan (9)

This season, students completed two major projects designed to develop both their technical skills and creative independence.

To begin, students created mixed media landscapes, with the requirement that each artwork incorporate watercolour and at least one additional material. This project encouraged them to experiment with a range of mediums and techniques, refining their skills while exploring how different materials can work together cohesively to form a unified composition.

After experimenting with various approaches, students then moved into a student-led project that allowed them to further develop their preferred materials and styles. Each student contributed three words, which were combined and randomly selected as prompts. Using these words as inspiration, students were challenged to create an artwork that incorporated all three concepts. With complete freedom in their choice of materials and techniques, this task encouraged creative risk-taking, problem-solving, and individual expression.

THANK YOU

We thank our S.M.A.R.T. Program Students for all their effort throughout the season, and in particular their preparation and presentations for the S.M.A.R.T. Program Showcase. We also thank Parent/Carers for supporting their cocurricular pursuits and participation in the S.M.A.R.T. Program.

We offer a huge congratulations and thank you to the S.M.A.R.T. Program Facilitators: Jamieson Papagiannis, Kiyomi Rossborough and Lana Tilli. Without their hard work, dedication and passion, the program would not be able to run.

Thank you to Lachlan Howard, the former S.M.A.R.T. Program, for all his work throughout last year to promote the successful running and growth of the program.

We thank our Heads of Faculty, Anthony Bacon, Michele Gill, and Jamie McCarney, for their continuous support and guidance of our students and Facilitators.

A special thank you goes to our Principal, Mr Andy Müller, Deputy Principal, Mr Jarrod O’Neill, Director of School Operations, Mr Cameron Lancaster, and our Heads of Campus for their ongoing support.
