The HRV uses the proven and reliable cage with external sleeve technology refined by Master Flo. This trim is designed to minimize wear and maximize durability. It consists of an internal cage (nozzle) with an external sliding sleeve (flow ring). Accurate longlife control is achieved by using two pairs of ports in the nozzle; the smaller, lower pair provides the initial 15% control range while the larger upper pair provides the overall capacity.

This trim design creates an upward impinging flow, which dissipates the majority of the throttling energy and confines the remainder within the hardened trim. The retaining sleeve offers protection to the choke body bore. Shut off is provided by hardened tapered seats that are upstream of the throttling ports. The seating surface of the flow ring is further protected from incoming flow by a deflection lip. This results in exceptional seating throughout the service life of the trim.

The critical seals (bonnet seal, bean seal, and stem seal) within the HRV valve utilize Master Flo’s extensively tested and proven metal-to-metal seal technology.

Bonnet Seal The bonnet seal is a double-tapered metal seal, which provides reliable sealing between the bonnet and the body. When the bonnet connection is made up via the Clamp Connector, the bonnet seal is seated against mating tapers in the body and bonnet, and is energized with an initial mechanical load. In service, the seal is additionally energized by the pressure of the fluid.

When the bonnet connection is released, the seal will provide the necessary lift to disengage the bean seal. No additional force is required to free the insert for retrieval.

Elastomeric secondary seals allow for testing of the bonnet-seal integrity via a special port in the bonnet.

Bean Seal The bean seal is a single lip seal which provides reliable sealing between the choke insert assembly and the body. The make-up of the clamp connector energizes the bean seal to the body bore. In service, the seal is pressure energized by the fluid.

Stem Seal The stem seal is a pressure energized single lip metal seal which provides reliable sealing between the valve bonnet and the stem.

A stem wiper is installed over the sealing lip to protect it from potential mechanical damage.

clamp connector

The clamp connector is an ROV-operable clamping system that secures the Choke Insert Module to the valve body. The clamping force also seats and energizes the metal bonnet seal and metal bean seal.

The clamp connector is mounted to the choke insert module so that it can be retrieved with the insert. The actual clamp consists of three segments that are opened and closed by a single threaded stem. The motion of the individual segments is constrained by the clamp bracket to permit the clamp to close evenly and open fully to clear the valve body.

The standard clamp connector comes with a “direct� horizontal (sideaccess) torque receptacle. The location of the receptacle is available in several optional positions relative to the valve inlet to provide operational access. Additionally, the torque receptacle is available in an optional vertical (top-access) configuration which operates the threaded stem through a right-angle gearbox. This provides a mechanical advantage so that the torque tool onboard the ROV need not exert as much torque as with the side-drive receptacle.

The Master Flo Choke Insert Running Tool (CIRT) is designed to align the choke insert in the correct orientation and to control the final landing speed during installation of a Choke Insert Module. It is also designed to protect a Choke Insert Module from damage during handling. The CIRT is a simple and reliable mechanical system; it requires assistance from an ROV, and has no electrical or hydraulic requirements.

The running tool latches onto a modified API-17D bucket on the Choke Insert Module. The latch mechanism is engaged and released by an ROV-operated lever. The lower guide frame interfaces with the guide funnel on the HRV valve and ensures that the insert is in the correct horizontal and rotational alignment before final landing. Three self contained soft landing cylinders on the running tool control the final rate of descent during landing.

The Choke Insert Running Tool with Choke Insert Module is lowered to approximately 15 feet (5m) above the valve.

The assisting ROV guides the CIRT into the guide funnel of the choke valve as the tool is lowered. Capture range is 6.5" horizontal offset, ±60° rotational misalignment, and 6° offset from vertical. Markings on the guide funnel provide a visual aid for confirming that the tool is in the rotational capture range.

The soft-landing cylinders control the final descent as the choke insert module is landed into the valve body. Pins in the valve body ensure that the choke insert module is precisely aligned as it lands. The metal bonnet seal keeps the insert loose in the body and prevents the bean seal from seating.

If the tool were to be heaved upward from this position, the soft-landing cylinders would immediately extend so that the subsequent descent would again be controlled. This protects the choke insert module from possible damage.

Elevation markings on the Guide Funnel and CIRT allow the assisting ROV to visually confirm that a successful landing has been achieved.

After confirming a successful landing, the assisting ROV makes up the bonnet-tobody connection through the clamp connector. Supplying the proper make-up torque will seat and energize the metal bonnet seal and metal bean seal. This also interfaces the hydraulic couplers that are built into the valve body and bonnet.

Once released from the choke insert module, the CIRT is lifted free of the guide funnel and is ready for retrieval. The ROV can now make up the electrical connection if the CIM is equipped with a position transmitter. The choke is then ready for service.

The Master Flo Test and Transport Skid is designed to secure and protect the Choke Insert Module during transport and storage and to facilitate testing of the insert before deployment. It consists of a skid frame with two choke bodies. One body for transport and storage, and one to perform functional testing of the insert. These bodies include guide funnels for use with the Choke Insert Running Tool. The transport body is designed to securely hold a Choke Insert Module and provide protection to the insert and metal seal elements. The test body engages the seals and comes with a test panel that is mounted to the skid frame. The skid also includes a toolbox that is supplied with the basic tools necessary for testing and maintenance.

TIR series Master Flo is committed to the research and development required to meet industry needs of a reliable, durable and robust product. This dedication to continuous improvement of our product line can be seen in the introduction of the TIR series, the next generation of our HRV valves.

Foreign debris of sufficient mass and velocity entering the valve inlet can result in damage to choke valve trim on impact. Master Flo has addressed this by developing a valve evolution that places a barrier between this destructive energy and the choke trim. The solution is innovative in that by absorbing the Kinetic Energy into the barrier and directing the fluid around the choke cartridge, debris and slugging have been addressed. This was done through modifying the current design by rotating the cartridge 90 degrees and adding a second side port in the cartridge, 180 degrees to the existing port. This eliminated the direct communication between the valve inlet and flow trim. Fluid is now forced to travel around the cartridge in a flow gallery that was added to the body bore. By aligning the main flow ports in the cage with the side ports in the cartridge, flow principals are enhanced through velocity reduction.

In addition this patented protected design has improved fluid management through a balanced flow delivery into the valve trim. All of these benefits are achieved while still maintaining the existing integrity of our current HRV tooling, sealing, and actuation.

The heart of the actuator consists of a dual ratchet-pawl system (one for open operation and one for close operation) that is operated by hydraulic cylinders and, in turn, operates the valve-stem nut. Each stepping cycle of a cylinder rotates the stem nut by 1/10 of a turn (36째).

The actuator comes with a top or side mounted ROV-override and tool receptacle.

SL actua tor actuator ratchet-pawl system A drive shaft with ten external axial grooves is keyed directly to the valve-stem nut.

Each ratchet pawl is carried by a drive ring, which is coupled to a piston stem by a connecting rod. The drive ring also carries a torsion spring that ensures the pawl engages a drive-shaft groove during an extend cycle; the design is such that full-face contact is maintained throughout an extend cycle. The back face of the pawl is tapered so that no loads are transferred to the drive shaft during a retract cycle, and a mechanical stop ensures that the pawl is completely disengaged in the rest position to allow for reverse or override operation.

hydraulic cylinders The standard double-acting hydraulic circuit in the SL actuator is designed for use with a 3000 or 5000 PSIG supply pressure (other supply pressures are optional).

They use hydraulic power to extend and spring force to retract. The hydraulic back pressure, caused by the hydraulic fluid head in the supply line, is balanced by use of a cross-porting system that connects the vent side of one piston to the supply side of the other. This ensures that the return springs function consistently and reliably and that the idle ratchet pawl is completely disengaged from the drive shaft.

The piston stems extend on either side of the pistons, which allows for effective support and guidance of the pistons throughout their motion. As well, a port drilled through the center of the piston stems connects the volume behind the stems to that of the actuator housing; ensuring that there is no net change in the actuator-housing volume due to the stroking of the pistons.

position indication A visual position indicator is located prominently on the actuator. This indicator is driven off a gear on the drive shaft. Additionally, an LVDT position transmitter is available. LVDT is driven directly through the top of the valve stem to assure positioner accuracy.
