ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT: HEIDI SCHRECK

Heidi Schreck is an American playwright, screenwriter, and actress renowned for her deeply personal and politically resonant works. Born on September 26, 1971, in Wenatchee, Washington, she pursued a BA in theater at the University of Oregon. Early in her career, Schreck taught English and worked as a journalist in St. Petersburg, Russia, before immersing herself in Seattle’s theater scene.

What the Constitution Means to Me, was her breakout work, debuting in 2017 and later enjoying a successful Broadway run in 2019. The play intertwines her teenage experiences in constitutional debate contests with reflections on the Constitution’s impact on women’s rights and personal freedoms. It was a finalist for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and earned two Tony Award nominations for Best Play and Best Actress. A filmed version premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2020, garnering nominations for Critics Choice, PGA, and DGA Awards.

Beyond this, Schreck has penned several other plays, including Grand Concourse, Creature, and There Are No More Big Secrets, which have been produced nationwide. Her screenwriting credits encompass episodes of Nurse Jackie, Billions, and I Love Dick. In 2024, she was announced as the writer and executive producer for an upcoming live-action She-Ra series at Amazon MGM Studios.

Schreck’s accolades include three Obie Awards, a Drama Desk Award, the Horton Foote Playwriting Award, and the Hull-Warriner Award from the Dramatists Guild. In 2019, she received the Smithsonian Magazine’s American Ingenuity Award for her contributions to the performing arts.

Residing in Brooklyn with her husband, director Kip Fagan, and their two children, Schreck continues to influence American theater with works that challenge audiences to reflect on societal structures and advocate for change.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

In this moment—when our nation faces deep divisions, when the very fabric of our democracy feels frayed and uncertain—What the Constitution Means to Me is not just a play. It is a call to action.

Heidi Schreck’s remarkable work offers more than personal memoir or civics lesson; it holds up a mirror to our American ideals and the systems meant to uphold them. Through humor, heartbreak, and unflinching honesty, the play asks us: What did the Constitution promise us? What did it forget? And who was left out?

This production is rooted in a simple but urgent truth: civic involvement is not optional. In times of national upheaval and strife, understanding the foundations of our government—the document that governs our laws, our freedoms, our futures—is more than academic. It is survival. It is resistance. It is hope.

Schreck confronts the contradictions and compromises embedded in the Constitution, particularly as they affect women, marginalized communities, and generations yet to come. By reliving her teenage self’s debate speeches and reflecting through the lens of lived experience, she guides us through complex truths about our legal system, our personal histories, and our collective responsibilities.

As a director, my goal is to honor the play’s emotional intimacy and intellectual rigor while reminding our audience that this conversation is far from over. The Constitution is a living document—but only if we choose to live with it, challenge it, and rewrite it when necessary.

The final moments of the play—when the audience is invited to engage, to vote, to imagine something new— are not symbolic. They are real. The future of our democracy depends not on a few, but on all of us.

May this production stir something in you: a question, a reckoning, a resolve.

Because what the Constitution means to you—to us—is not fixed. It’s still being written.

BIOGRAPHIES

BETH RICHMOND (HEIDI) - It’s been twelve years since Beth Richmond has been on stage. She was last seen on this stage in Time Stands Still in 2013. This return to the stage was totally unexpected; When she read the script she was traveling in Greece, literally sitting in the shadow of the Acropolis (I know it sounds like fiction, but it's absolutely true!!), the birthplace of democracy, weeping on a park bench. She knew there was no way she could say no, even though the prospect was absolutely terrifying! For her, saying yes to this role is an act of bravery, small perhaps, but hopefully meaningful. She believes that bravery is what is called for in this moment, and that it is in woefully short supply. She hopes this play, in this little theater in this little town will matter, that it will speak to people and inspire them to ask how they can be brave in whatever way is meaningful to them. Perhaps it will be just to tell someone else what they learned or were reminded about by this extraordinary piece of writing. Our democracy matters. And we are losing it. Beth is a graduate of the Theater Arts program at San Francisco State University, and holds a Master's Degree in acting from the American Conservatory Theater Advanced Training Program. She has performed onstage at A.C.T. as well as at the Magic Theater in San Francisco, and at the Sacramento Theater Company. She was a founding member of the Warehouse Repertory Theater in Fort Bragg and has performed here at MTC as well in numerous productions. She has also recorded over a hundred audiobooks. A lifetime ago Beth was proud to be in the very first film made with digital technology; If you want a chuckle you can check out the short film Mail Bonding on YouTube. In real life, Beth is a massage therapist, with a practice in Fort Bragg.

JOHN CRAVEN (LEGIONNAIRE/DANNY) -

Over the span of forty plus years, John has acted in and/or directed for most of the theaters in the SF North Bay and a few others in the SF Bay Area. This is his second appearance here at Mendocino Theatre Company, having played "The Devil" in MTC's The Seafarer (2023). Some recent theatre roles in the Bay Area include: Serebryakov in Uncle Vanya at The Roustabout Theatre's Professional Ensemble; several characters in It's a Wonderful Life, a Radio Play at Spreckels Performing Arts Center; The Father in Somebody Dies Again—an original piece with The Imaginists Theatre at Z Space, SF. Recently John has lucked into some feature film roles as well: Joseph in Burn Country by Ian Olds (2016); Ray in Freeland by Mario Furloni and Kate McLean (2021); and Albert in The Creep Tapes with Mark Duplass and Patrick Brice (2024). A few shorts as well. Finally, for twenty-seven years, John was the founder and co-director of the Art Quest Theater Arts program at Santa Rosa High School in Santa Rosa. That was the best.

VALE GAUTHIER (DEBATER) - Vale is very excited to perform in What the Constitution Means to Me. They have previously performed in The Tempest and Our Town with MTC, and many other plays outside of MTC. Other than theater, they enjoy writing, playing Magic: the Gathering, logically considering the apocalypse, and listening to Coheed and Cambria's entire discography in chronological order.

FROM THE PRODUCING DIRECTOR

Thank you Mendocino and Fort Bragg Communities,

As I prepare to step away from my role as Producing Director, I find myself filled with deep gratitude and emotion reflecting on the past three years we’ve shared together. Serving this vibrant and passionate artistic community has been one of the greatest honors of my career, and I want to thank each of you— patrons, volunteers, fellow artists, and colleagues—for your support, trust, and friendship.

From the very first curtain rise to the last ovation, your unwavering enthusiasm has been the heartbeat of every production. You’ve filled our seats, offered your time and talents, and made our work richer with your presence. Whether you built sets, sewed costumes, ushered at the door, or simply cheered us on— this theater, and this journey, would not have been the same without you.

To my fellow artists and collaborators: thank you for your courage, your creativity, and your commitment to telling powerful, meaningful stories on our stages. I have grown alongside you, and I will carry these experiences with me always.

Although my role is changing, my connection to this community is not ending. I am thrilled to announce that I’ll be returning to direct the opening production of the 2026 50th Anniversary Season—Always, Patsy Cline. It will be a joy to reunite with you all and celebrate this major milestone together.

As I transition out, I am delighted to welcome Alexander Wright as the new Interim Producing Director. Alexander brings with him a wealth of experience, a keen artistic vision, and a deep respect for the legacy and future of this theater. His leadership, professionalism, and collaborative spirit make him an outstanding choice to guide this organization into its next chapter. I know you will offer him the same warmth and support that you so generously shared with me.

Thank you, once again, for embracing me, for believing in the work we’ve done, and for making these three years so unforgettable. I will always treasure my time here and look forward to the many ways our paths will continue to cross.

With heartfelt appreciation,
