-Greg It has been a wild ride since I took the position as the Executive Director of the Mena Polk County Chamber of Commerce in June of 2017. I stepped into this office with no previous experience in the field. All I had to rely on was a lot of determination, a background in small business ownership, and an extremely supportive board of directors. Our organization has grown swiftly over the last 18 months. Our membership is now over 270 members strong, we welcomed an additional staff member, and took on a substantial amount of new projects and events. None of this would have happened if not for the outstanding individuals who volunteer their time to serve on our board. Our board members have a passion for the community that some would say is unparralelled. I am always grateful for their dedication and leadership. Some form of a Chamber of Commerce has been organized in Polk County since 1898, making the Mena Polk County Chamber of Commerce the oldest business organization in the, area as well as the largest, with current membership totalling 284. In 2018, the Chamber welcomed 35 new members, hosted 25 ribbon cuttings, emailed 52 weekly newsletters to over 600 contacts, had over 75,000 social media engagements and 9,932 website visits, mailed 674 vacation & relocation packets, hosted 8 networking events and 5 community events with a combined total of over 30,000 attendees, and awarded $2000 in scholarships to local students. So far, in 2019, the Chamber has welcomed 26 new members, emailed 11 weekly newsletters to over 625 contacts, had over 25,000 social media engagements and over 2,000 website visits, mailed 52 vacation/relocation packets, hosted 2 networking events with a total of 75 attendees. Hidden HIDEAWAY HOT ROD
In 1976 Mark Campbell started a tradition. The Queen Wilhelmina Rod Run was born from a desire to unite hot rod enthusiasts in a place that Campbell loved and called home. His business, Street & Performance was the perfect platform to launch a car show from, and launch it did. In fact, it took off like a rocket, or a drag car if that is your preference. From its initial conception to current day, the Queen Wilhelmina Rod Run draws car lovers from far and wide. Sadly in 2015, at the age of 70, Mark passed away leaving behind his car show and his legacy. In 2016, the Mena Polk County Chamber of Commerce got behind the wheel of the Rod Run and has worked hard to grow this unique event that highlights some of the most amazing features of the area.
Heading in to its forty-fourth year, QWRR has grown and shows no signs of slowing down. It is truly a tradition for locals and visitors alike. They all look forward to every August, when over 200 hot rods, street rods, lowriders, rat rods, and trucks descend on the small, quaint town of Mena. One of the very unique elements of this event is its multiple locations. Friday night’s show-and-shine is a throwback to a simpler time when cars cruised up and down the main drag revving their engines for hours and hours. People fill Mena Street, alongside gleaming fenders and perfect upholstery, kicking off the two day event. Put it in high gear and fast forward to Saturday when we pack the top of Rich Mountain at Queen Wilhelmina State Park for a full day of looking at cars, talking about cars, comparing cars and of course, food, kids fun, and plenty of opportunities for retail therapy. The chances to take home some hardware are many as we have added classes to the voting ballot. The Mark Campbell Award is not only picked by someone who was close to Campbell himself, but the winner receives the honor of having their prized set of wheels as the inspiration for next year’s t-shirts. You’ll have plenty of chances to put your hot rod through its paces on the Talimena Scenic Byway. This local treasure is full of twists and turns and is the route to and from Saturday’s event locations. That evening finds us back on Mena Street, down at the south end, listening to live rock & roll and the rumble of motors while the sun sets behind the mountain. Stick around for awards and linger a little while longer with friends over a plate of BBQ prepared by some of Mena’s finest gentlemen to ever step behind a smoker.

Unbeknown to some, is a hidden pocket of hot rod culture. Street and Performance is no longer in existence, but people in the know still bring their cars here for specialty treatment. Rod Run is the perfect place to connect with the locals, especially the ones with gasoline running through their veins. And you won’t get far before finding someone who brings up Mark Campbell’s name. Take notes for your next visit to Rod Run, but you’ll probably be back before then. The love of fast, shiny, and loud cars is strong in these hills, and many find it hard to stay away.

Talimena Scenic Drive Sweeping views, stunning overlooks, and historic sites summon you to travel along the 54 picturesque miles of the Talimena Scenic Drive. Travel across the second highest peak in Arkansas, on this magnificent, National Scenic Byway between Mena, Arkansas and Talihina, Oklahoma. A destination favorite of motorcyclists, hikers, and those who love the grandeur of the Ouachita Mountains and the challenging turns, curves, and hills. it is easy to see why so many return. Stop for a visit at Queen Wilhelmina State Park and grab a bite, or stay the night, at Queen Wilhelmina Lodge. A number of historic sites such as Rich Mountain Fire Tower, Horsethief Springs, Old Military Road, and the Choctaw Nation/State Line Historical Monument provide travelers with a glimpse into the regions past. The Talimena Scenic Drive is a must see in the fall. There are few things that compare to the brilliant display of fall colors in the Ouachita Mountains. The mountains unveil a kaleidoscope of colors and enchant visitors with a warm show of red, orange, yellow, and gold. The best time to see this brilliant display is late October and early November. It is the perfect opportunity to visit the shops of Mena and enjoy the festivities of the Ouachita Arts Celebration. make plans to explore all the beauty that is the Talimena Scenic Drive.
Shady, Arkansas Hidden deep in Arkansas’ Ouachita National Forest, east of Mena, is the small mountain community of Shady. This remote and rugged area is home to many trails and enjoyed by hikers, backpackers, and off-road enthusiasts alike. This is a remote mountain setting where stunning vistas give way to lush valleys and lazy streams meander their way through the forest, searching for cascading waterfalls. With miles of natural beauty to explore, it’s easy to see why this is a favorite spot for locals and visitors. While you’re there, be sure to make a trip to Shady Lake Recreation Area. This scenic, 25-acre lake was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, in 1937. The campground offers sites for both tent and RV/trailer campers. The campground offers showers, toilets, and a dump station. Other amenities include a pavilion, playground, fishing pier, swim area and a boat ramp. There are many hiking trails and unique and historical treasures waiting for discovery, in this truly unique area.

Take a Trip DOWNTOWN
If it’s culture you desire during your stay, take a trip downtown. Mena may be considered a small, quiet, and quaint place, but it’s heart is lively. A mix of old and new make up the downtown district, where you can catch a glimpse of the past while enjoing the experiences of the present. North Mena Street is the offical beginning (or end depending on which way your journey takes you) to the Talimena National Scenic Byway. It is also home to the emerging Downtown Arts District, where you will find galleries and shops full of world class treasures. Glass work, pottery, painting, and weaving are all showcased in the area. The performing arts are alive and well at the Ouachita Little Theatre, located in a restored 1923 movie house originally called The Lyric. Here you can catch a local production nearly any weekend of the year. Looking to strengthen your body after satisfying your artistic side? Treat yourself to a yoga class or mixed martial arts, or treat yourself to something sweet at one of the many cafe’s and eateries. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all served in the district. through history
olk County as we know it was organized on November 30, 1844. In the 1830’s, the first white settlers made their way into the area settling in the areas now know as Potter, Rocky, and Hatfield. The original county seat was Dallas, but in 1898 it was moved to Mena, a new settlement built by and for the Kansas City Pittsburgh & Gulf Railroad, later called the Kansas City Southern (KCS). The town of Mena was officially established on August 19, 1896 and was the brainchild of Arthur Stillwell who had a dream to build a railroad, as straight as the crow flies, from Kansas City, Missouri to the Gulf of Mexico. His project was backed by an investor from Amsterdam, Jan DeGoeijen. Mena gets its name from DeGoeijen’s wife, Folmina “Mena” Margaretha Janssen DeGoeijen. Janssen Park was named for her father and many streets througout the county derive their names from either the connection to this foreign partner or the destinations along the railroad itself. One of Mena’s most recognizable landmarks, the cabin in Janssen Park is older than the town itself. The log structure was built in 1853 by William Shelton and has long stood as a symbol of perseverance and strength alongside the many settlers that struggled to survive in the rugged and wild Ouachita Mountains. It has served as a home, hospital, inn, club house, civic center, a museum, a city hall, and it was rumored that Jesse James and his gang used the cabin for shelter on several occaisions. Janssen Park was also created as part of Stilwell’s plan and with help from the KCS Railroad, its swamps were turned into ponds. The spring which feeds the ponds was a source of drinking water for the newly established town and in 1918, Father Gallagher from St. Agnes Catholic Church was appointed “Park Commissioner” and turned the 10 acre parcel into a beautiful place for the citizens to enjoy. Notable individuals from the area include Chet Lauck and Norris Goff of Lum & Abner fame, Dorothy Shaver, the first female president of Lord & Taylor, T. Texas Tyler, renowned country music singer, and Paul Tyrone Lewis, renowned artist. The current depot was constructed in 1920 and replaced the one shown on the opposite page. The Historic KCS Depot is still in use today and serves as a visitor’s center, museum, and houses the Mena Polk County Chamber of Commerce as well as the Mena Advertising & Promotion Commission. Mena’s history is housed here, and it is well worth a visit to delve deeper into the rich and storied past of Mena and Polk County. Stop by the Visitor’s Center & Museum at 524 Sherwood Avenue. It’s time to feel like a kid again! Board Camp Crystal Mine invites you to come for a visit and play in the dirt. Whether you are a rock-hound or a first-timer, bring your family, friends, and pets and dig in. There are crystals to be found everywhere at this easy to access, above ground mine. The mine is open daily but reservations are required. When the digging is done you are invited to stay in their Crystal Cottage. The Cossatot River flows through the Ouachita National Forest offering a beautiful, yet challenging course for kayakers and canoeists. Cossatot is roughly translated from an Indian word meaning “skull crusher” and the river has been called “the most challenging section of whitewater between the Smokies and the Rockies.” The Cossatot is 89 miles long, begins southeast of Mena, and is listed as a National Wild and Scenic River and an Arkansas Natural and Scenic River. When local rainfall increases the watershed, the river forms Cossatot Falls, a rocky canyon with a series of back-to-back class III-IV+ rapids that drop around 40 feet in 1/8 of a mile. With names such as Washing Machine, Whiplash, and Devil’s Hollow Falls, adventure and adrenaline are likely flow as fast as the river. Camping sites are located near the Cossatot Falls area, and at the nearby Brushy Creek Recreation area with four scenic trails, spanning nearly 20 miles, for hikers to enjoy. Holly Springs Homestead There’s always something growing at Holly Springs Homestead. The bountiful offerings from this Century Farm’s Farm Stand are only the beginning. All of their produce is started from seed and is picked fresh every day from the field. During the winter months you will find fresh cut Fraser Fir Christmas Trees, wreaths and garlands. Mountain Glory Station and the Glory Train All aboard! It’s time for a rail trip around Queen Wilhelmina State Park. You’ll discover a miniature train and depot perched high atop Rich Mountain. The Glory Train chugs around two miles of track with stops along the way to capture the views along the southern vista. Queen Wilhelmina State Park For views that go on for miles and miles, a trip to the Queen Wilhelmina State Park is a must. The park is located on Ark. 88 (Talimena National Scenic Byway) 13 miles west of Mena and encompasses 460 acres, featuring a campground with 41 campsites and a bathhouse. There are picnic areas, trails, and a seasonal miniature train and mini-golf course. The park offers daily, weekly, and monthly activities to participate in including park interpretive programs that highlight Rich Mountain’s unique fauna and flora. rkansas summers are hot, and the best way to cool off is a trip to the nearest body of water. Locals know the best places, and are usually agreeable to share the location of their favorite spot or at the very least, their second favorite spot. Bard Springs Located next to a small scenic stream in a remote mountain setting, the Bard Springs Recreation Area offers five adirondake-type shelters for picnicking. A very small dam on the stream creates a pool of water that is popular with swimmers in the summertime. Once a small campground in the past, this area is now open for dayuse only. No electricity or water is available at the site, but a vault toilet is provided. Nearby Shady Lake offers camping opportunities. Mena-Oden Ranger District 479-394-2382.

Lake Wilhelmina Lake Wilhelmina is an Arkansas Game and Fish Commission lake approximately 200 surface acres in size, constructed in 1958. The lake has a reputation for excellent bluegill and redear fishing. The commission maintains a concrete boat ramp on the southeast side of the lake. Primitive camping areas are located along the eastern side of the lake. An accessible wooden fishing pier is located on the southwest side of the lake. Polk Road 125, Mena.
Mountain Fork River The Upper Mountain Fork River offers 31.7 miles of canoeing or kayaking from near Hatfield, Arkansas to Broken Bow Lake in Oklahoma. This part of the river has Class I and II rapids, clear water, fishing for Smallmouth bass and other species, and excellent scenery with pine forests covering the hills and bluffs along the river’s course. Water levels in the river are generally adequate for boating year-round.
Ouachita River The Ouachita is a river of diverse beauty. It begins as a small mountain stream at Eagleton (Polk County) and flows eastward approximately 120 miles. It winds through lush mountain valleys, steadily building as it flows between huge boulders beneath mountain bluffs. The Ouachita is noted for its great fishing, especially bass, bream, and white perch. Wildlife is prolific along the banks of the river. Mena-Oden Ranger District 479-394-2382.
Shady Lake Shady Lake is a small but scenic 25-acre secluded lake in the southern Ouachita National Forest southeast of Mena. This area and the lake were developed by the CCC in the 1930s. The Shady Lake Trail traverses Saline Creek and passes the historic Shady Lake Dam. The campground offers 64 sites for campers, both tent and RV/ trailer. Twenty of the sites offer water and electric hookups, with most of those being able to accomodate Rvs up to 30 feet long. The rest of the campsites, 44 of them, are primitive tent camping sites, offering no hookups. The campground (in-season) offers showers and flush toilets, and a dump station as well. Little Missouri Falls Little Missouri Falls is a stair-step fall situated in a deep gorge that attracts those looking to explore, those looking to relax, and those in search of the perfect photo opportunity. A short hike on a paved trail is required to reach the falls, and is worth every step. As soon as one lays eyes on this gorgeous section of the Little Missouri River, they instantly know that they will return. Hiking and Backpacking If rugged, remote, and beautiful is your definition of a good time, the mountains of the Mena/Polk County area are the destination for you. Whether a novice or experienced hiker, the trails of the Ouachita Mountains introduce those who enter to an incredible adventure. If a day hike is on your agenda, Earthquake Ridge, Orchard Trail, and Shady Lake Trail offer easy to moderate trails with wonderful views. If you are traveling along the Talimena Scenic Drive and want to stretch your legs for a bit, Queen Wilhelmina State Park invites you to stop and explore. Lovers Leap, Reservoir, and Spring Trails can all be accessed from the park and provide easy to strenuous treks. For those interested in a longer, more challenging journey, venture out to the Wolf Pen Gap Trail System. While some trails are easy, those wishing for a more difficult challenge can find it here. Or set your sights on the Ouachita National Recreation Trail. This is the longest trail in the Ouachita National Forest and spans 192 miles across its entire length. With panoramic views and elevations reaching 2,600 feet, beauty and adventure await you along this impressive trail. Queen Wilhelmina State Park
Let’s create an adventure where the winding roads leave us with anticipation of what’s around the corner. A place where the breathtaking, panoramic views seem to go on forever and cotton candy sunsets sweeten the skies. You have an audience with the majestic Queen atop her beautiful, mountaintop setting at Queen Wilhelmina State Park. So, put the convertible top down or the kickstand up and let the adventure begin. Queen Wilhelmina State Park is located on the Talimena Scenic Drive, northwest of Mena, Arkansas, on Rich Mountain. Rich Mountain is the second highest peak in Arkansas, at 2,681 feet. The jewel in the crown, of the park, is the Queen Wilhelmina Lodge. The only open lodge on the 235 mile Ouachita Trail, the original “Castle in the Sky” was built in 1898 and has graced this same location since. The original lodge was built by the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad to house its passengers. As many of the railroad’s investors were Dutch, the lodge was named to honor Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, who was to be crowned in September 1898. continued... The KCPG railroad, ˆƒ…‹Â?‰ ƤÂ?ƒÂ?…‹ƒŽ †‹Ƽ…—Ž–‹‡•ǥ •‘Ž† –Š‡ Ž‘†‰‡ –‘ ™Šƒ– later became the Kansas City Southern Railroad. The original inn fell into disrepair, and permanently closed in 1910. The State Act 76 of 1957 created Queen Wilhelmina State Park and it was dedicated at the Louise Durham School in Mena with Governor Orval Faubus and Winthrop Rockefeller as the key-note speakers. Hatfield City Park
Take a step back in time, at Mena’s beautiful Janssen Park. Located within Janssen Park walking distance of Mena Street, this jewel invites you in like a familiar friend. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this 10 acre park hosts an 1851 log cabin which has served many purposes in its lifetime. It is rumored to have been used as a hideout by outlaw Jesse James, has been used as a hospital, post office, and city hall over the years. The park contains two spring fed ponds, two Mountain Howitzer Cannons, and a bronze boy and girl fountain purchased in 1914. Take a leisurely walk across the beautifully manicured grounds, gather for a picnic under the trees, plop down on a blanket and watch the ducks, or have a family gathering in the gazebo. Playground, picnic pavilon, basketball court, and restroom facilities are available.
This large, wooded park is conveniently located a few blocks from downtown yet feels like it is miles away. A community treasure, McMillan Park offers something for everyone. If it’s a quiet picnic under the sprawling shade trees or a summer afternoon spent splashing in the neighborhood pool, make plans to enjoy all the park has to offer. McMillan Park features an Olympic-sized swimming pool, tennis courts, playgrounds, picnic pavilon, baseball fields and a skate park for the kids.
A beautiful park located in the heart of the community offering a paved walking trail, seven outdoor exercise stations, handicapped accessible picnic tables, playground, restroom facilities, and a small stage for performances.
Aubrey D. Tapley Sports Complex This 74 acre park located on Highway 71 North in Mena. There are currently 5 baseball/softball fields, soccer fields, concession facilities including a pavilion, restrooms and two playgrounds. The future is bright for the complex as many more projects are being planned. The complex also serves as the venue for community events including the Annual 4th of July Celebration and multiple tournaments each year.
Cove Park Small in size but big on fun, this quaint park has plenty of structures for kids and those of us who are kids at heart. A basketball court and covered picnic pavilon round out the offerings.
Camp Pioneer Caddo Area Council’s Camp Pioneer is the most utilized Boy Scout Camp in Arkansas. Located in Hatfield, it sets at the confluence of the Mountain Fork River and Two Mile Creek. Every summer, the camp welcomes hundreds of scouts who flock to enjoy the activities of this establishment that has been in operation since 1916. Baseball, softball, and soccer fields are all available at Tapley Sports Complex.
