The Sheppie Pride PRESIDENT=S MESSAGE

The month of September has been fairly quiet for the Lions. A luncheon was held for 18 elderly folk on Saturday 8 September. This was once again organised by Hilton and catered for by the Lion ladies. We hope to arrange a few more luncheons before December. This is an outing for some of the elderly who find great difficulty in getting out and I know, is greatly appreciated.

Blind Bingo was held at the Uvongo Town Hall on Saturday 15 September & our sincere thanks go to Joey & Pieter, Otto & Inge & Alistair who always find time to arrange Bingo which, I==m sure the old people look forward to.

The Lion Ladies have undertaken a great and very needy project with the Flower Foundation. Each month they have undertaken to make 2 x meals for the approximately 39 people living at the Flower Foundation. For those of you who don==t know, the residents at the Flower Foundation live on approximately R500 per month, of which R100 goes to rent! The first >> cook in== was held at Joey==s house and was great fun as well as a great success. The meals were gratefully received by the residents.

An E Mail was sent to the Lions International President Frank Moore offering our Club==s condolences after the World Trade Centre tragedy.

The month of October will be very busy for all of us with the following events taking place 1.

The Mid Year convention at Harrismith is on 13 October.It would be great to have a big delegation from Port Shepstone Lions. Please think about joining us. The deadline for registration is the end of September - only 4 days away! Act quickly and phone Garth or myself to register!! The rates are very reasonable.

The Leadership retreat at the Anerley Camp Site on 19/20 October. I am hoping that once again all Lions will join in and make a success of the weekend for the incoming prefects.

Summary Of Lions== Actions And Information Relative To The World Trade Centre Tragedy Prepared By Past International Director Bob Klein

September 12, 2001 The following is a summary of what has been done and planned in our response to the critical needs which are arising from the World Trade Centre disaster. On Tuesday, September 11, as soon as it became apparent that the attack would be catastrophic, LCI and LCIF was contacted to seek counsel and assistance. I spoke directly with Peter Lynch requesting both funding and operational assistance. Mr. Lynch indicated that LCIF was already preparing to help.

Subsequent to that call, it was announced that LCIF had set up a designated fund to receive contributions for a AArelief@@ effort. That fund is called the AAWorld Trade Centre Disaster Victims== Fund. This designation has been posted on the Lions Website under the current caption of, AAA special Message from International President Frank Moore.@@ I have been informed that LCIF will make a substantial initial donation to the Fund as an indication of its concern and support.These funds will be utilized through a special coordinating committee to be established in the next few days. It will be based on the models used in Oklahoma City and in the Red River Floods. In the next few days, I will be setting a date and time for the first meeting of the committee, possibly at the USA/Canada Forum. It will include representatives of the Lions of New York and Bermuda, Connecticut, and New Jersey. This tragedy affects people and their families from each of those States. The donations we expect to receive are being given for all victims, and will be distributed based on criteria which will be set by the coordinating committee. I have spoken to the International family members in both Connecticut and NJ and they are in tune with the overall strategy. Because of the critical need for blood donations, all District Governors in MD 20 have been notified by the State office that they should request clubs to arrange for blood donations with the American Red Cross or other agencies collecting for the New York City area. This will be a major, immediate help to the victims being treated in NYC hospitals. I have been told that the other states are starting drives of their own.Mr. Dane LaJoye, manager of the LCI Public Relations Division, indicated that his department will be updating the webpage with new information and more detail. There will be several special mailings sent to some 20,000 Lions worldwide requesting donations. That will be going out in the next week. In addition, a respectful and concerned public relations effort will be made to inform people about the Lions effort as well as to garner additional donations.PIP Bob Uplinger has initiated some press contact in the Syracuse area describing the efforts currently being made by Lions in NY.I have been working to coordinate the activities and share information of what is happening and planned so that we are all on ! the same page. If you have any questions, please call me and I==ll be happy to respond to any issue. If you have information about your district that needs to be known, let me know and it will be put in the communication net. Any councilmatic matters should be directed, as usual, to CC John Wargo. While the desire to help immediately is paramount in our minds, it is not prudent to overreach at this time. It is essential to do now what we can manage and do more when we have better information and available resources. The blood donations will provide an important service for the next several weeks, and promoting donations will give us the wherewithal to help on a broad scale. Let us concentrate on these two for now. The direct help through the Foundation will continue for many months and possibly years. But as usual, we Lions will serve and affect the lives of many through what we do in the next, difficult weeks.

Half Way Laugh After a few years of married life, a man finds that he is unable to perform. He goes to his doctor, and his doctor tries a few things but nothing works. Finally the doctor says to him, "This is all in your mind," and refers him to a psychiatrist.

After a few visits to the shrink, the shrink confesses, "I am at a loss as to how you could possibly be cured." So, finally, the psychiatrist, at his wits end, refers him to a witch doctor. The witch doctor says, "I can cure this." He throws some powder on a flame, and there is a flash with billowing blue smoke. The witch doctor says, "This is powerful healing, but you can only use it once a year! All you have to do is say '123' and it shall rise for as long as you wish!" The guy then asks the witch doctor, "What happens when it's over?" The witch doctor says, "All you or your partner has to say is '1234' and it will go down. But be warned; It will not work again for a year!" The guy goes home and that night he is ready to surprise his wife with the good news. Soon he is lying in bed with her and says "123", and just like that, he gets an erection! His wife turns over and says, "What did you say '123' for?"

The Port Shepstone High School Leo=s Club recently donated clothing and sweets to the Place of Restoration in Margate. Pictured here are some of the Leo=s together with a few of the children who reside at the Place of Restoration. CONDOLENCES September has certainly been a sad month for three of our Club Members. Lion Paul Brauteseth =s father, the Rev Ron Brauteseth, passed away after suffering from a heart attack. Rev Brauteseth was one of the most popular members of our local community and served the people of the South Coast with utter dedication for many years. He will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Our deepest sympathy to Lion Paul and his family for their tragic loss.

Lion Theo Mail=s mother also passed away during the month of September after suffering from a long illness.

We also extend our deepest sympathy to Lion Theo and his family for their loss.

Lion Denis Meyer=s step-brother, Clive, was also killed in a car accident in Mid-Illovo. The accident occurred as a result of a minibus overtaking on a blind corner. Ironically, Clive=s 13 year old daughter was killed at virtually the same spot under the very same circumstances seven years ago.

Our thoughts and support are with these members during their bereavement.
