Winter Edition 2019 Our valued holidaymakers still continue to book their holidays on our coastline which in turn continues to drive our economy and keep us all in business. Despite the crime, the infrastructure negatives and fuel hikes, exciting opportunities still await the innovative mind on our coastline and the investment potential is endless.

W

elcome to all our winter holiday makers and locals alike. This is truly a wonderful time of year for all of us to enjoy our beautiful slice of paradise and I wish you an exciting and fun filled winter exploring our tourist attractions and enjoying our beautiful beaches. For all the fishermen out there hopefully the cooler weather will be bringing with it tightlines. With an almost perfect climate throughout the year and glorious golden sandy beaches flanked by a sparkling Indian Ocean, it’s a small wonder the area enjoys such popularity as a top holiday destination.

Thank you to those loyal advertisers who have supported this publication once again making it the handy and helpful holiday book that it is. I am truly proud as your Editor to be representing each and every one of you as each establishment plays a vital role in the success of our coastline. Thanks also to Denis Meyer of DM Designs for once again his tedious long hours of design and layout.

Nature lovers, whale, dolphin and bird watchers delight in the proliferation of wild life and walking trails abound in our numerous nature reserves. Once again, it’s the Sardine season (hopefully) so no matter where you go or who you are, you will undoubtedly come across a sardine related event in some way or another.

Keep your finger on the Pulse … the Heart Beat of the South Coast.

Have a flick through the pages to find out all you need to know about the South Coast this season. Be vigilant on your stay. A safe guest is always a happy guest.

Whatever you'd like to contribute. WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU. MOMMY SHARK LETTER Dear Editor, I refer to your parking issue letter that was written in your last edition and have to comment further by saying that parking is not only an issue in and around the beach area's on the South Coast but also in and around some shopping centre area's too. In peak season the “grid locked” traffic situation in the Shelly Beach area in trying to get in and out of both the main shopping centres in that area is just too terrible. Perhaps a town planning error somewhere? Town Planning – Gauteng

APPEALING TREND Dear Editor, I am an avid reader of your publication for the past 5 years and I have seen the new trend of advertising that seems to be making its progress with the many businesses that support your magazine of late. I am a retired business owner from Durban and I now live in Pennington on the KZN South Coast. I have had the pleasure of following this publication for a number of years and found it to be extremely helpful and useful on my many holiday trips down to the coast. Recently I see you seem to be assisting the business owner on many platforms to create more business awareness for them by advertising digitally for them as well. Well done to you. You are going the extra mile for your clients. Not many publications do this. I always look forward to each issue published. Thank you. Retired – Pennington

CONFUSED TIPPER Dear Editor, I would like to respond to the question that was published in your last edition regarding what is the correct gratuity for waiters and waitresses these days. As I have worked in the hospitality industry for about 10 years now the minimum and acceptable percentage is 10 – 15 % of your bill. This percentage includes whether you order coffee or drinks or a plain bottle of water. I hope this information helps your confused tipper? Hospitality Worker – South Africa Thanks for the letters and keep up the correspondence. You are welcome to respond to any of the above using their “anon” name. Remember that we reserve the right to edit any letters due to space consideration. Send your letters to: sandy@thepulsekzn.co.za with your full name and “anon” one as well. Hate speech, politics or religion debates will not be accepted or tolerated.

Business Feature John Sheekey Packaging ntrepreneur John Sheekey started John Sheekey Packaging in 1984 from a small office at Marina Beach and then the business expanded so in the early 90’s he moved to much larger premises at 8 Link Road, Marburg. This has always been a family business and after John retired, his son Stephen assumed management and continues the tradition of top notch customer service and excellence in packaging. The company regularly delivers throughout Southern KZN and further afield.

E

They specialise in a wide range of packaging and cleaning chemical solutions with a warehouse full of choices including containers and bags for the retail and food industry, films and wraps, industrial strapping, nailing and stapling or a host of other items and have recently also included a biodegradable range of packaging and supply alternatives to plastic and endeavour to “save the planet one meal at a time. After 35 years, this is truly a company you can rely on and friendly sales staff are always on hand to assist you in choosing the perfect packaging solutions for your needs. The benefits of using their packaging is that it protects, preserves, facilitates distribution, promotes choice, sells your product, informs and instructs, provides convenience, contains prices, promotes hygiene and safety, eliminates risk, minimises waste, and is innovative. Most used packaging can be recycled and we need to work on getting more plastics etc into our recycling systems and making sure our used packaging are directed towards their next productive use. For consumers, that means placing used glass & plastic bottles, caps & lids, aluminium & metal, cardboard & paper or plastic containers, into the colour coded recycling bins in the designated areas. For more information on this business call them direct on 039-6854126 or view their webpage: www.johnsheekey.co.za

Gag-A-While by Denis The Menace TAXES A little boy wanted to know what it was like to have R1,000. His mother told him to pray to God for it. He prayed for two weeks but nothing turned up. Then he decided perhaps he should write God a letter requesting the R1,000. When the post office received the letter addressed to God, they opened it and decided to send it to President. The President was so impressed, touched and amused that he instructed his secretary to send the little boy R20. He thought this would appear to be a lot of money to a little boy. The little boy was delighted with the R20 and sat down to write a thank-you letter, which read as follows; "Dear God: Thank you very much for sending me the money. I noticed that you had to send it through the government. As usual, those thieves deducted R980 for tax."

SurďŹ ng Report Heather Clark Winter is creeping up on us slowly which us surfers just love as we get our early morning offshore winds that sometimes lasts till after lunchtime and longer. That means smooth and glassy waves, cooking surf and often we are lucky enough to score some bigger winter waves which always gets the adrenalin pumping. During our Autumn season we had many days of strong easterly winds and lots of rain. During the last week of April we saw three days of non-stop rain which caused heavy flooding. The rivers came down with lots of debris and dirty water which in our case was a blessing as it pushed a lot of sand around which made for some really good banks at St Mikes where I do most of my surf lessons. With winter approaching keep your eyes on the ocean as we will start seeing more and more whale and dolphin activity which is always amazing. I just love it when the dolphins are around surfing the waves with us. I often hold back on some epic waves when the dolphins are around as there is just something so magical about being in the water a few feet away from them, there is literally no better feeling. Also keep your eyes on the aloes around June/July, when they turn orange it is usually a good indication that the sardines are close by!! Keep safe in the ocean, bathe at life guarded beaches and please keep our ocean and beaches clean at all times. If you walk past plastics or any rubbish on the beach, pick it and put it in the bin please -'leave only your footprints’ HAPPY WINTER SURFING EVERYONE!! Yours in Surfing Heather Clark

Fishing Report Darrell Hattingh he heavy rains and floods experienced at the end of April really threw us a ‘skew ball’, however the fish are still around. During May we usually experience calm seas and some pristine conditions and the winter fish should be back on the bite again once conditions settle. June and July coincide with the annual sardine run which everyone is holding thumbs for this year.

T

Its time to get rods, reels and tackle in order and fishermen can look forward to some shad, rockfish and other species such as Garrick and Kob from the beaches, deep water points and piers up and down the South Coast. Hopefully the “weather gods” will play their part. Charter fishing should pick up with a variety of bottom fish from places like Shelly Beach. Some tuna and couta should be around as well as a marlin or two which really gets pulses racing! Hopefully the spearos and crayfishermen have some clean water to make the best of the winter season. Make sure you have the relevant permits, keep to the bag and size limits and keep our beautiful beaches clean. Tight Lines everyone !! Darrel Hattingh

SUDOKU

To advertise in this publication sandy@thepulsekzn.co.za

Here’s How Sudoku Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! (Correct answers on Page 83)

Drakensberg Feature

The Drakensberg Ampitheatre The Drakensberg is the name given to the eastern portion of the Great Escarpment, which encloses the central Southern Africa plateau. The massive Drakensberg mountain range forms the border between KwaZulu Natal and the Kingdom of Lesotho. It’s towering basalt peaks and buttresses offer dramatic vistas with its highest peak reaching a spectacular 3,482 metres. The Amphitheatre in the northern Drakensberg, dominated by the Mont-Aux-Sources, is particulary magnificent and it is here that the powerful Tugela River tumbles 900 metres down the escarpment. It is in this mountainous terrain that numerous raptors including black eagles, cape and bearded vultures have found their homes. The mighty Drakensberg mountain range, One of South Africa’s 8 World Heritage Sites not only boasts some of the most incredible scenic beauty, but it also has over 600 examples of San rock paintings in caves. The San hunter-gatherers lived there from the Stone Age until the late 19th Century – a 4000 year occupation. The rock art of the Drakensberg is the largest and most concentrated group of rock paintings in Africa south of the Sahara, and is outstanding both in quality and diversity of subject. The northern, central and southern regions each have their own appeal and attract hikers, birders and nature lovers from around the world. The Drakensberg’s natural and cultural wealth has made it one of South Africa’s top tourist destinations. Staying in the shadow of these beautiful mountains brings immediate breathing space and a chance to unwind. Aside from hiking and horse trails there are also canopy tours, white water rafting, trout fishing, mountain climbing, abseiling activities, local arts and crafts.
