DISTRICT CONTACT NEWSLETTER OF LIONS DISTRICT 410C ISSUE 4 OF 2013/2014

MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR Dear Lions, Lionesses, Leo's and Lions Ladies, I cannot believe that Mid Year is upon us and I have had nearly six months serving District 410C. It has been a hard, bumpy ride trying to build membership, and trying to stop the negativity that some Lions have. Negativity will never build this District to will tear it down. Think Positive. Become Positive. I have visited 9 clubs this month. I would like to thank all those clubs for making me feel welcome, inducting new members, and your amazing service projects and for the wonderful fellowship afterwards. Zone 7 you are inspirational to me and proud to be a Lion. The way all the clubs work together on certain projects is absolutely astounding. May you all carry on working together as one. Durban North Lions Club thank you for all your hard work and the long hours you have put into the Mid Year Conference and I am sure it will be a great success. To all those Lions travelling to Mid Year please drive safe and looking forward to meeting you at Happy Hour on Saturday Night. I have another 18 clubs to visit but will do that in the New Year as on Sunday the 17th November I will flying to New Zealand to visit my children. I will still be checking on my emails and to see what is happening in the District. "Attitudes are Mirrors of the mind: They reflect Thinking" Have a wonderful month of service. Yours in Lionism DG Heather

UPDATED INFORMATION: ON THE NHLANHLA ‘SENGE’ MQADI WHO LOST BOTH HIS LEGS IN A HIT AND RUN ACCIDENT EARLY THIS YEAR.

Pictured with him on Umzumbe beach are the lifesavers that pushed his wheelchair from his home to the beach and back again

Nhlanhla Mqadi, the lifesaver who lost both legs in a hit-and-run, visited the beach for the first time since the accident. Hibberdene Lions have been given a paddle ski and are having it repaired for him so he can be with his friends, in the element he loves.

HAVE A LAUGH Two Irishmen were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking up. A blonde walks by and asked them what they were doing Paddy replied, 'We're supposed to be finding the height of this Flagpole, but we don't have a ladder..' The blonde took out an adjustable spanner from her bag, loosened a few Bolts and laid the flagpole down. She got a tape measure out of her pocket, took a few measurements, and announced that it was 18 feet 6 inches. Then, she walked off. Mick said to Paddy, 'Isn't that just like a blonde! We need the bloody height, and she gives us the length!

CLUB PROJECTS AND FUNDRAISERS SHELLY BEACH

SHELLY LIONS AND SPAR FOOD HAMPERS What a great gesture from Ramsgate Spar who joined the Shelly Beach Lions in commemorating the Heritage Day spirit by donating a huge fruit and vegetable hamper for distribution to our main feeding schemes in the local community. The food will be a great help towards the "Hunger Drive" program that helps more than 150 orphaned children with a monthly food hamper. Some of the remaining supplies were also distributed to the Betania Mission and Genesis Hospital.

SHELLY LIONS JOIN CAMP SUNSHINE FOR THE REACH FOR A DREAM KIDS As one of the Shelly Lions' ongoing key projects we once again got involved with the "Reach For A Dream Foundation" to help with their annual Camp Sunshine at Hibberdene Childrens’ Home. This wonderful Camp gives terminally ill children a great weekend away at the seaside, a chance to run and play and be free despite their health concerns. The Shelly Lions donated gift packs with toiletries, towels, craft sets and sweets to each of the 50 kids, and also catered for the kids with a steak braai on Saturday afternoon which was a great success. This is a worthy cause and certainly deserving of our support.

LOCAL LIONS DONATE POOL FENCE TO HIBBERDENE / MERCURY CHILDRENS' HOME It was a great pleasure for the local Lions Clubs of Zone 6 to officially hand over the fully completed pool fence at the Hibberdene Mercury Childrens' Home on Saturday. The home, which does fantastic work hosting children from all over KZN has had serious budget cuts and obstacles to overcome, and their need for a safe perimeter fence around the large pool and super-tube was an absolute necessity. Our local Lions Clubs including Shelly Beach, Port Shepstone, Ramsgate and Hibberdene all came to the rescue donating valuable funds to erect a 6ft wire fence around the pool area to ensure the safety of all kids.

THE 3 TOTI CLUBS

On Sunday the 20th October, all three of the local Toti clubs joined forces and supplied lunch and entertainment to the retirement village; Not sure who had the most fun – seniors or Lions – Its always a great feeling when the three club get together – much fun and laughter is share between the members. Amazing what happens in the kitchen when a pack of Lions are set free- mmmmmmmmmmm what happens in the kitchen stays in the kitchen; On the Menu – Roast Pork, baby Potatoes, Butternut and pea and the pudding was delicious Malva Pudding and custard. The hit of the day was the free flowing LIONS PUNCH – the included some Wine of course. We had awesome music which was much enjoyed by the guests. They then all went off to enjoy an afternoon nap - (Maybe too much punch?) The Lions stayed on and were entertained by the music. A Great thank you to Billy and Don for the music - You will be back soon for sure!

VRYHEID

Lions go ape WATCH - the Wild Animal Trauma Centre & Haven - cares for and rehabilitates vervet monkeys to return them to the wild, and it was to help WATCH that the Lions Club of Vryheid recently visited the centre. There, the Lions handed over a donation of food, medicine and cleaning products to Bruce and Sandy. The food included lentils, sugar beans, rice and sunflower seeds. And it was all made possible by the community of Vryheid supporting the Lions Mayfair earlier this year. So thank you, Vryheid!

RAMSGATE

Mzimba Ncoyin, Lion Rob Henry and Leo Samantha Marlow

The Ramsgate Lions Club held a very successful sugar testing morning at the Hibiscus Mall on Saturday the 19th October. It was very well supported by the public with a total of 217 people were tested, 71 males and 146 ladies and a total of only 23 were out of range, and were referred to seek medical help and advice.

Lions Club of Eshowe recently worked hard at the Eshowe SPCA walk, selling Hot Dogs etc. for their funds. We believe they made approximately R10,000 on the day. By the way a past Lion Hazel Johnson works there full time, looking after the animals and also grooming the public's dogs for a fee. She does a damn good job too!! SCOTTBURGH

LIONS PICNIC for the AGED The annual Picnic for the Aged at TC Robertson Nature Reserve, organized by the Scottburgh Lions, is always a highlight in the year. However, because of the rain this year, it was held in St.Paul’s Anglican Church but the weather never dampened the spirits of the one hundred invited guests. The event, planned for 28 September, could not be cancelled because a large delicious finger lunch had already been prepared by the Lions to feed the multitudes who attended. A great time was had by all and after lunch everyone joined in with the community singing down memory lane led by Lion Eddie Donaldson and Lion Theresa Strachan with Val Stofberg on the piano.

NEVER TOO OLD TO HELP THE LIONS At 105 years young, Mrs. Alice Bothamley, affectionately known as “Mrs. B”, is more than willing to lend a hand with painting benches and planting flowers at the Lions Peace Garden behind the Scottburgh Library. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a delicious cold meats and salads lunch, including Mrs. B who finished it with a glass of white wine. Her favourite song is “Alice Blue Gown” which she can sang without forgetting the words – a truly gracious and remarkable lady.

PEACE POSTER COMPETITION. The Scottburgh Library was full of artworks on Friday night 18 th October as the Scottburgh Lions Club held their annual Peace Poster Competition and cocktail party. For the past 25 years, more than eight million children across the globe have participated in the Lions International Peace poster contest. This year’s theme was “Our World, Our Future” and children between the ages of 11 and 13 were encouraged to express their feelings through art. The Scottburgh Lions Club had eleven schools participating this year and the best three posters will be sent through to the District and subsequently to the National final. The judges, Carol ten Have and Louisa Watt, commented that the theme had been interpreted very well with great imagination this year. Congratulations to the winners: 1 st - Meghan Fraser from Umkomaas Primary school: 2nd - Tyreke Arulappen from Scottburgh Primary: 3rd - Alessia Taverna, also from Umkomaas Primary. We wish them well in the District competition.

HIBBERDENE

The Hibberdene Spring Fair is an annual event involving various charities and the local churches, plus anyone who wants a stall. It's convened by the Lions but all the stalls are independent and their profits go to the stallholders or the charities they represent. It's more of a social event than a real fund-raiser, though the Lions sold books, hot dogs, chips and soft drinks and raffled an orchid for the charity account.

PORT SHEPSTONE

2013 EYE CARE AWARENESS DAY AT HIBISCUS PRIVATE HOSPITAL - PORT SHEPSTONE SOUTH AFRICA October is Eye Care Awareness month and this year, for the 5 th year in a row, the Port Shepstone Lions Club once again teamed up with Hibiscus Private Hospital in Port Shepstone and Dr Trevor Steyn to give back to the community by assisting 12 people from the surrounding area with much needed cataract operations on 11th October. Main sponsors included; Port Shepstone's Lions Club who provided R25000-00 worth of funding, Ophthalmologist, Dr Trevor Steyn and Anaesthesiologist, Dr Alex Basson who graciously donated their time and skills. The Phaco lenses and surgical packets were kindly donated by Alcon South Africa and Genop Healthcare and the theatre facility, wards and nursing staff were provided by Hibiscus Private Hospital in Port Shepstone. It is an honour to be part of this worthy cause as none of the patients were in the position to afford the operation and would have battled with deteriorating eye sight for the rest of their lives. Many were almost completely blind. These patients were recommended to the one-day programme from a public sector waiting list controlled mainly by the Lions Club of Port Shepstone. The sheer gratitude displayed by all the patients was testimony of the wonderful gesture provided by the Lions and their partners. Everyone involved agreed, that to be part of enabling these deserving people from our local community to get to see and appreciate with us the beauty of the South Coast that we often take for granted, was worth all the hard work, sacrifice and most gratifying.

GILLITTS/CAMPERDOWN

The Lions of Gillitts and 2 members from Kloof hosted 14 residents of Sunfield home for a weekend in the Berg. WE did game walks, game drives, played cricket, watched the Sharks become champions and were entertained around a log fire. We also planted 40 trees for Arbour day. Of course we had the traditional Bok Droll Spitting competition and the Marshmallow tree. Thanks you to Kloof for donating trees to the project.

ZONE 3 MEETING "The Zone Meeting of Zone 3 District 410C was held on 12th October 2013 at the clubhouse of the Howick/Umngeni Lions Club, which is situated in a delightful environment of the Umngeni Valley, with Zebras in the immediate area, indigenous trees all about, and a super number of rooms allocated to the Lions, which has been thus for a long time - as long as I can remember. The Clubhouse is festooned with a large number of Lions banners from all over the world, a reminder of many Lions and many special occasions. The Lions were pleased to have the company of the Lionesses from Azalea, who are a special project of the Lions Club of Howick/Umngeni. The Zone Meeting proceeded well under the Chairmanship of Zone Chairman Lion Peter Hyde. Club Reports were presented and lively discussions took place, in particular regarding Membership, which is such a concern at times of weakening exchange rate, Rand/Dollar. The Clubhouse is suitable for all types of refreshment and those attending were glad to join in. Appreciation to Howick/Umngeni Lions for once again making their Clubhouse available for the Zone Meeting".
