I

cannot believe how the time is racing on.

My Induction Dinner on the 4th July was one of the Highlights of my Life and I want to thank the members for entrusting me with the Presidency for the next year. Thank you Council Chairman Elect Denis Meyer for inducting me and a big thank you to Lion Lady President Anita and her team and also the Port Shepstone Country Club for the great venue. With the support and guidance of the Directors and the Members’ participation, I hope that this Lionistic year will be one to be remembered. My focus for the year is to two-fold. Firstly for us to focus on the youth and secondly, to improve our partnership with other service organisations within our community. A week later we were straight into the 2015 Lions Show and again I witnessed the way this amazing Club pulls together. Under the leadership of Show Convenor Lion Jean Masson, the Show was one of the most successful ever. Thanks has to firstly go to Lion Jean for his tremendous dedication and passion towards the event, his way of getting sponsors to “cough up”, and secondly his team that made the sale of tickets for the Comedy evening, a huge success. The food tent under Lion Alistair Warman and his team, the Bar/Entertainment tent under Lion Brian and Lion Norman, The Gate Office controlled by Gary Baker, were all huge profit makers for the Show. Two new events at the Show namely The Miss South Coast Pageant, organised by Lion Lady President Anita and her team and the MTB Race organised by Lion Andre, were very successful. The p a g e a n t w a s complimented by a few of

the judges who have International exposure. The MTB Race was given the accolade of being on the annual calendar for the South Coast. Both these will become regulars at our Show in the future. The arrival of the children from Reitz, organised by the Reitz Lions Club, was a major eye opener for me and I know of a few men who shed a tear after getting into discussions with some of the Children. This was again a major success and I thank all those involved that helped with the goodie bags, the Stay at The Pont, the various venues they travelled too. This project was made possible by the Reitz Club, our Sheppie Club and the Shelly Beach Lions and it was great to interact with all. We were privileged to receive a visit from our District Governor, Willie van der Schyf for a few days during the Children’s stay. To Etienne and Jaco from the two Local Round Table Clubs, you guys made light work of the bar duty and it was great getting to know you better. Etienne, we will be collecting our Lion Mascot from you in the next few weeks. Life will not be the same at the top table without our mascot. In closing, Lion Merve, it was great to see you at the meeting and being on the mend and I wish Lion Mike Rhoda a speedy recovery after his fall. Jeff Smith Club President

I was very impressed with the Lions Show; if anyone thinks the South Coast is behind the times they could take a leaf out of the Port Shepstone / Umtentweni community's book and a very, very professionally organised event. - Rob Crankshaw CEO of KZN Conservancy Association

This monthly Newsletter edition is unbelievable -takes so much time and effort to do. I would not know where to start. The colour, outlay, info...is Denis Meyer a pensioner? This must be best in 410 ,surely if not the world??? Derek Ballman - New Zealand

Butthead’s Beat (Editorial - South Coast Herald) : The ‘pride’ can be proud Thankfully, the few drops didn’t put a damper on what must surely be the show-of-all-shows over the past 30 or so years. SOMEBODY up there was certainly smiling down on the Port Shepstone Lions this past weekend… for a change. But that ‘somebody’ obviously has a mischievous streak in HER as she teased the show organisers with a few gentle showers that did get hearts aflutter. After all, in the past, Lions incurred her full wrath by smiting them with full blown floods! They have such a complex about it that Club PRO Denis Meyer openly states: “If you want rain, ask us to put on a show.” Thankfully, the few drops didn’t put a damper on what must surely be the show-of-all-shows over the past 30 or so years. (It could be 31 as memories are a little hazy. Blame the beer tent.) There will always be the odd hiccup, of course. For example, the master of ceremonies for Thursday night’s comedy show mistakenly introduced comedian Aaron McIlroy as a ‘past pupil of Port Shepstone… Country Club’? Take heart, young Dwayne, and don’t be too hard on yourself. It takes guts to stand up and do that sort of job in front of 1 000 boozed up people. Ask your counterpart at the Miss South Coast Beauty Pageant two evenings later who had to be told by choreographer Kirsty Orsmond to avert his eyes while the young beauties were in the middle of a costume change backstage. (Kirsty, girls… I promise I didn’t see a thing, but I’m still blushing.) To be too critical of such an event is really harsh as it’s all put together by enthusiastic amateurs for no reward at all, except the knowledge that they have provided a huge amount of fun for South Coasters and visitors alike. Plus, all the profits are ploughed back into worthy causes. The Lions and all their helpers are absolutely pooped after a magnificent effort… and skint from buying their own liquids and solids for four days. If you meet one in passing, give him or her a pat on the back. That’s all the payment they want in return… and they will really appreciate it. Show co-ordinator Jean Masson and President Jeff Smith, you and your teams really roar.

J

ust a very big thank you to the Sheppie Lions, for allowing the NG church the sell their biscuits, rusks and koeksisters at the show. The profit made was a surprising R 5550.00 !!! They also ran out of stock early Sunday morning. Hopefully the Lions will be so kind again next year, then we will be better prepared, and have more than enough cakes, milktarts etc. This money will go a long way in assisting our church, to provide for the homeless/needy people that come to our church on a weekly basis for help. It's very much appreciated!!!! PS: Also a big thanks for running the “Bazaar advert on the big screen at no charge.

T

hanks from the bottom of our hearts from the whole team of Shore Electrical and Projects cc for all your assistance, helpfulness, your advice and feedback reporting before the show, from sending out of application forms to the allocation of stands. The communication channels open and able to talk to you when we had a problem with our stand. The spot was perfect for what we exhibited. Well done. Our findings: The security company who protected the exhibitors stands were tops. We employed someone to check our stand through the first night, and the feedback we got is that the guards were on top of things, every time he came to patrol and check out our stand, a security guard was there on the lookout, between the cars and patrolling the perimeters of the show grounds. Our goods and products could be left at the stands overnight and everything still in place and safe on our return the next day. The Lions Food tent provided really good quality and delicious tasting food, with minimum waiting period in queues. Offered a great service, with value for money for the food we got to eat. The cakes they served was fresh and well displayed as in any coffee shop, there to choose what you wanted. The pancakes were made while waiting. The toilets were always kept clean, and helpers on duty all the time, greeted me as I walked in. Found them filling up the toilet tanks in order to flush, if no water available in the flushing units. I thought The Lions had a great team, with 'hands on' on any situation they found themselves. The gate staff closed the entrance to vehicles due to rains and mud, yet the next day there were no evidence of these heavy rains or mud, and sawdust covered up any problem areas. We found the outcome of the show a great success and managed to get a lot of enquiries regarding Solar and backup systems, as well as the exposure of our company. Lots of people wanted to know if we were local and enquired where we were based. Now comes the hard work to follow up on all the requests and competition results. Out of interest would like to know the results of the judging of stands in the different categories. No one noticed any judging taking place, how or when the judging took place. I noticed that exhibitor's made great effort with banners, flags and pot plants. I really picked up a lot of tips for our next exhibition. Shore Electrical and Projects cc together with Ellies sponsored a prize, an Ellies 600watt backup system, in a Light reading competition, where the public had to write out a jingle, catchy phrase, joke or a slogan regarding power/load shedding. We would like to know if we can announce the winner of the competition on the Lions Facebook page, once chosen. We hope that the Lions Show have made a lot of money in their fund raising campaign and hope to see you at '2016' Lions Show. Kind regards, Margaret Administration SHORE ELECTRICAL & PROJECTS cc

T

he 2015 South Coast Lions' Show was, by all accounts, a resounding success and far exceeded the expectations of the event organisers, the Lions Club of Port Shepstone. The event was visited by 6000 more supporters than the previous year, with almost 40% being holiday makers from other parts of the country. This year, as promised, the Show Committee took into account the many suggestions offered by our supporting public. The layout was re-designed to provide improved access and maximum exposure for all exhibitors, both indoor and outdoor. There was ample parking right next to the Expo grounds and the toilet facilities that were very kindly sponsored by M-Projects, were constantly maintained by a dedicated cleaning staff. The electricity generators for the entertainment and catering tents were sponsored by Mascor and Multicrop Construction and diesel was sponsored by Wozani Berg Gasoline. The Lions also entered into a partnership with South Coast Tourism and the event became an official part of the 2015 Sardine Festival program. The Show started off with the traditional Lions' "Laugh Out Loud" Comedy Evening on Thursday. Over 900 tickets were sold and the entertainment tent was packed despite the rainy weather. Guests were served with a 3 course meal by members of the club and several volunteers who worked extremely hard to ensure that all guests were provided with meals in record time. The evening entertainment began with a superb performance by musician Dave Stark who was followed by well known local comedian Aaron Mcilroy. Aaron's hilarious antics generated much laughter with the very festive audience. Well renowned Johannesburg based band Rubber Duc then took to the stage and provided superb music which was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. This whole event was a huge success and the organisers are most grateful for the overwhelming support received from the many local companies who attended en masse. Friday, which is traditionally an exhibitor's day saw double the number of visitors attending compared to the previous year. This year's Show provided a full fun fair with plenty of spectacular adrenaline rides. The fun fair was a huge hit with Show goers both young and not so young. Show stand judges, led by Mr John Graham took time to visit all the stands and begin with the adjudication process. Friday night's entertainment started off with a performance by popular local band "The Kickstands" followed by a superb performance by Durban based band "Marzirlou and the Rockabilly Rebels" who took the audience down memory lane with their foot tapping music from the 50's and 60's. Local rock outfit "Chewing The Hornet" then took to the stage and played a superb line up of music which was very well received by their hundreds of adoring fans. The Saturday edition of the Show was very well supported. Thousands of visitors started to stream through the gates shortly after opening time at 9am and the parking area was soon full to capacity which resulted in additional space being provided by the Country Club. Despite the heavy traffic entering the Country Club, there were no incidents reported. A walk through the parking area revealed that almost half of the vehicles parked had "GP and "FS" number plates which was a clear indication that hundreds of holiday makers chose to support this year's Show. During the course of the day the Toyota Yaris Extreme Ride provided thrilling experiences for those brave enough to tackle the specially erected course with their qualified drivers. The arena entertainment schedule started off with the South Coast Strongman Competition which was well supported by several contestants who kept the crowds in awe with their exceptional strength and abilities. This was followed by a delightful musical display by our local Mtwalume Brass Band. The Le Riche Brothers the took to the arena and captivated the large crowds with their daring and internationally renowned motorcycle stunts. Elvira Venter Dance Studio's Dance Extravaganza then took to the arena exposing several talented dancers who performed superbly. The official opening ceremony also took place in the main arena. UGU Deputy Mayor Johnny De Wet addressed the audience, thanked the Lions for their fine efforts in community service and officially opened the Show. Port Shepstone Lions Club President Jeff Smith and South Coast Tourism CEO Justin Macrory also addressed the audience and expressed their appreciation to all involved with this year's Show. This was followed by the official exhibitor prize giving ceremony. A total of 110 indoor and outdoor exhibits were on display at this year's Show. A highly entertaining remote control Rally Cross race the continued through the afternoon until the closure of the arena at 4pm. Local musicians Devin Osborne, Jade, Dave Marks and Anton Roos provided superb performances in the Beer Tent throughout the course of the afternoon. Judging by the positive feedback received from exhibitors and visitors alike, the Show was a huge success. There are so many people who deserve recognition for making the event possible. Our exhibitors who worked very long hours with smiles on their faces, our superb entertainers who really put on great shows for the audiences, our Miss South Coast finalists and everyone behind the resounding success of this pageant, the hundreds of cyclists who eagerly participated in our very first MTB Classic, our very generous sponsors, our local Press and also press from around the country, all the wonderful helpers who always come forward and work very long hours, The Round Tablers from Sheppie 83 and Margate 46 and Hibberdene Lions who assisted in the bar, Port Shepstone Country Club for the venue and of course the Port Shepstone Lions and Lion Ladies - the unsung heroes who gave of their time and means to make this project possible. The true heroes of this project are the public who supported the Show en masse. 10 000 visitors streamed through the gates and half a million rand was raised for charity through sponsorships and monies raised by Lions during the event making this the most profitable show in the 30 year history of this event. The South Coast and our visitors from all over South Africa can take a bow. Together we have resurrected one of the greatest events in the history of our beautiful region - well done to you all!!

unday saw the birth of a new local sporting event as cyclists converged on Port Shepstone Country Club for the South Coast Lions Show Mountain Bike Classic.

The historic race, which started and finished in the main arena, was well supported with hundreds or cyclists participating in the 45km, 20km and children’s rides. ROAG officials were on hand to register and administer the event, which was widely praised by the participants. The winners of the 45km race were Matthew Wilkinson and Uvongo star Hayley Smith, while Eric Nisovela and Belinda Thompson ruled the roost in the 20km men’s and women’s races respectively. Reigning KwaZulu-Natal Under-23 women’s cross-country champion Hayley Smith, who also won the recent Sardine Classic in Port Edward, stated: “It’s always nice to take the win, especially at a home race. “I really enjoyed the race and have to say well done to the organisers. It was a wellorganised event and a nice course. I’ll definitely be back next year.”

t was shortly after a Cabinet meeting hosted by the Reitz Lions Club during February this year, when members of the Port Shepstone Lions approached their Reitz counterparts and discussed the possibility of bringing a group of underprivileged children down to the seaside for a holiday. Everyone involved was keen on the idea and the Reitz members almost immediately started to identify underprivileged children who could go on the holiday. They also organised a Golf Day as a fundraiser to cover the fuel costs for the trip down to the coast as well as other expenses. A local school was approached and mini buses were organised to transport the kids and the Reitz Lions. On the Port Shepstone side, Lion Jean Masson organised free camping for everyone at the Pont Holiday Resort in Port Edward and the club set aside R20 000-00 which would go towards meals for this kids and other expenses related to their activities during their stay. Lion Kevin Ross organised army tents and Suid Natal Primary School kindly loaned a sufficient number of beds and mattresses which were transported to the Pont by one of Lion Jean’s trucks. A group of 32 children set off on their journey to the coast on Friday 10th July chaperoned by a number of Reitz Lions and their wives. After a long journey they arrived at The Pont late in the afternoon and were met by Pont Manager, Lion Mike Davison, River Activities Coordinator Brendan Kohler and Restaurant Chef Leon Bisschoff who showed them to their accommodations and then arranged supper at the Pont Restaurant. Saturday was a day of fun activities at the Pont which included a boat trip to the beach on “Argy Bargy”, the Pont’s barge. On Sunday the kids and Reitz Lions travelled to Port Shepstone where they were hosted at the South Coast Lions’ Show for the day. The kids were treated to several rides in the funfair, Lunch courtesy of Sagie and Kasturie, a local family who came forward and offered to feed the kids. Port Shepstone Lion Ladies then presented all the kids with sponsored gift bags filled with goodies and beanies knitted by Lion Ladies and senior folk from the Flower Foundation home for the aged. They were also given clothing and other items that were donated through sponsorships organised by the Lion Ladies. Whilst at the Lions’ Show, members of the public came forward and wanted to donate and help to make their stay even better. One person donated their fuel for all the travelling during their stay and even filled up the tanks for their trip back to Reitz. On Monday the kids enjoyed more fun activities at the Pont during the day and in the evening they were transported to Shelly Beach to watch a movie at the Ster Kinekor cinema in Shelly Centre. Tuesday was filled with excitement as the kids were taken by bus to uShaka Marine World in Durban courtesy of the Shelly Beach Lions Club. Rietz, Port Shepstone and Shelly Beach Lions and their families joined them for the day. Wednesday was another day at the beach in Port Edward followed by a braai with a group of visiting Port Shepstone Lions. Sheppie’s Melvin The Lion also visited and was very well received by the kids. There was much fellowship around a huge bonfire organised by the Pont. On Thursday the excitement continued as the kids visited Pure Venom Snake Park and the NSRI Base at the Shelly Beach Skiboat Club. They ended the day off with a spit braai at the Pont. They returned to Reitz on Friday after having enjoyed a holiday of a lifetime by the seaside. This was truly a heartwarming project for all Lions involved. Many members became quite emotional when they experienced the love, joy and appreciation expressed by these wonderful children. The overwhelming support of sponsors and our local community was also nothing short of extraordinary. Well done to all involved!
