I

trust all you romantic Members spoilt your ladies over the Valentines

weekend. I sure did. Thanks Lion Martin for the Day at the Clubhouse where I believe a good time was had by all. I was originally concerned when I heard that a certain Construction Company Owner had a asked a certain Chemist owner to attend the event with him!! Building chemistry not doubt!! And we are a Men's Club? A big thank you and well done to the persons who have registered for the Multiple District Convention in Ballito. From the last correspondence that we received regarding registrations, Sheppie Lions was leading the pack nationally, with ten members having registered. A fantastic effort by the members to support our very own Council Chair Elect Denis, we will be there in true Sheppie style to cheer you on! After our first official Show meeting we heard that Hibiscus Coast Tourism was to back us again this year. An amount of R80 000 has been agreed on as a sponsorship, and this gives us an indication as to their commitment to our investment into serving the community. The Entertainment is starting to look great thanks to "DJ Stoppies" and his team and with the portfolio holders all taking control of their areas of expertise, I feel that we are in for another great show under the guidance of Construction Company Owner mentioned above. We also recently donated an amount of R30 000 to YouthworX to further their development.

Lion Alistair Warman had a very successful diabetes testing morning at Harbour View Spar. Thanks to Lion Lady Debbie from the medical side and those who assisted on the morning. A special thanks has to go to Graham Milligan from Harbour View Spar for the support you have given to Lions over the years. A very successful Bingo afternoon was held last Saturday, with 41 persons attending the event. Thanks to Lion Kenny and the team and the Lion Ladiesthat assisted with the food. Last but not least, you may be forgiven for not understanding a conversation around the bar due to our foreign Legion having returned. Welcome back Lion Alister Love and Lion Lady Irene and for the time being, Lion Mike Heathcote and Lion Lady Sandy. " Jeff Smith Club President

Dear Sheppie Lions, We were thrilled to be able to come to the Lions Club last night, we felt very welcomed by your group who were amazingly friendly and hospitable to our team. We will be publishing a photo in the paper to celebrate and acknowledge the incredible support that the Lions Club has given to Youthworx to build our sports centre. Again, we are so thankful to the Lions Club for their support to our Youthworx community centre and we know your donation to us will be appreciated by many young people on the South Coast. Kind regards, Jessica Price Youthworx Operations Manager

uring their January club meeting, Port Shepstone Lions donated R30 000 to YouthworX.

Members of YouthworX were present at the meeting and gratefully accepted this generous donation which will go a long way towards improving the facilities at the centre. YouthworX is a Community Centre in Port Shepstone where children and youth can ‘Play, Learn and Connect’ with others. YouthworX is a youth-based Christian community centre and is a thriving hub that encourages socialising and creativity in a safe environment. YouthworX guides and mentors the youth from a Christian perspective through youth groups and cell groups, but is non-denominational and welcomes young people from all walks of life. The YouthworX building was donated by a local family, and being an NPO, still rely greatly on support from local businesses and donations from the community of Port Shepstone.

uring our February Club meeting, Club President Jeff Smith presented Harbourview Superspar manager, Graeme Milligan with an appreciation plaque on behalf of the club. This award was presented in recognition of their ongoing support and sponsorship our club projects. This includes allowing the club to conduct food collections, Diabetes testing and Christmas Cakes sales at the supermarket. They also sponsor foodstuffs etc. for various Lions projects on an ongoing basis. Graeme, whose father was once a Lion member at the Standerton Lions Club, is a true friend of the Port Shepstone Lions Club.

P

ort Shepstone Lions ran a successful diabetes testing clinic at Harbour View Superspar on Saturday 20th February. A total of 87 people were tested during the course of the morning, 26 of which were out of their sugar level range. The Club extends their sincere appreciation to the Management of Harbour View Superspar for providing the venue and Lion Lady (Sister) Debbie Marshall.

A

whopping 41 people played in the Port Shepstone Lions’ February monthly Bingo event. That’s quite an increase from the usual 25 to 30 people. The clubhouse boardroom was packed, so much so that even caller, Lion Kenny Rolfe had to give up his table and chair.

E

very year at the end of the club's massive South Coast Lions Show project, Port Shepstone Lions gather for a group photo at the entertainment marquee. The 2015 Lions Show photo was very kindly sponsored by Sean Van Tonder Photography. Printing of the photo was kindly sponsored by Adventure Branding and the framing of the photo was sponsored by Lion Johann Du Plessis, seen here presenting the photo to Club President Jeff Smith. This photo will take pride of place next to all the others in the club's bar area. Out grateful appreciation to all involved.

P

ort Shepstone Lions and Lion Ladies celebrated the Club's 46th Charter Anniversary on Saturday 5th March at a glittering dinner held at the Port Shepstone Country Club. 40 Lions and their ladies braved the extremely humid conditions to don their tuxes and evening ware and celebrate in style. Hats off to IPDG Martin Rundle and his team for their fine efforts in organising and setting up the hall as well as Lion Ladies Anita Hulley and Myrna Masson for their beautiful table decorations. Emcee Lion Kelvin Hulley officiated the evening with his usual humorous antics and quotes. During his reply to the toast to the Lions Club of Port Shepstone, Club President Jeff Smith spoke about the very first Charter Dinner which was held on 2nd March 1970 at the Milton Hotel in Port Shepstone. He paid tribute to the 21 service minded individuals who had the foresight to charter the first Lions Club on the Lower South Coast and, with the sponsorship of the Amanzimtoti Lions Club, make it happen. The event was attended by leading businessmen from Port Shepstone and Uvongo, the then Port Shepstone Mayor, Clr S Robinson, District 410-C’s 1st District Governor Louis Halse and the then Zone Chairman Doug Hudson from Durban the Ridge Lions Club. A large contingent of Lions from mainly Durban based clubs also attended the event to support the establishment of our new club. The Charter certificate from Lions Clubs International was officially handed to Charter President Roy Schwegman by District Governor Louis Halse. During his reply to the toast to Lions Clubs International, Council Chairman Elect Denis Meyer praised the club for, not only retaining it’s membership but also for growing into the largest Lions Club in the District. In May, Port Shepstone Lions will be sending a large contingent of delegates to the forthcoming Lions Multiple District Convention in Ballito to witness the official induction of Lion Denis as Chairman of the Council of Governors for the ensuing year. Lion Denis will be the first member of the club in it’s 46 year history to be appointed to this position which he will hold for the 2016/2017 fiscal year.
