e have had a busy August Month after the Show and it seems that it hasn't slowed down after then.

Madeleine Gouws is commended at the way she organises this and thanks also to our very own Lion Ladies for the great meals provided.

District Governor Willie has been in hospital and we have good news today that he is back home - we wish him a speedy recovery. We look forward to seeing him at the Mid Year Conference in Ladysmith in November.

Lion Kevin and I attended a Lunch at Raj Mahabeer's house. His efforts were being recognised by Radio Lotus with a Show called “Full House”. The broadcast was from his kitchen and also in a small marquee. Not sure if I was fortunate or not, but was interviewed on Radio Lotus. Three of the longest and hardest questions I have ever faced. Great experience for me and I will never forget it.

The Appreciation Dinner for the Show sponsors and VIP's went off well and thanks to Michael Frey and the ladies for the amazing meal provided. Paid a visit to Margate Round table and handed over a cheque for R5000. Incoming Council Chairman Denis and I attended their meeting and I personally learnt a lot from them. A week later raided the Sheppie Round Table and also handed over a cheque for R5000. We also recovered Melvin the Lion who now has his rightful place at the top Table. Immediate Past President Alistair and a team of Lions and Lion Ladies, did an amazing job at the EAA Fly in at Margate Airport, providing meals for the conference. The exposure for Lions was great and all leftover food went to Reinhardt's Place. When I feel that the world has dealt me a cruel blow, I think of the men and women who participate in our annual Blind Bowlers Competition. This was again held recently for the 34th time and each time after my recent involvement, I am amazed at the positive and competitive spirit that these persons constantly have.

We now look forward to the ECL Camp and thanks to all who have already done so much for this. Have a great Spring. Jeff Smith Club President

Hi Jeff, On Behalf of the Rotary Club of Port Shepstone may I congratulate the Lions for putting on, in our opinion, the best ever Lions Show. It was so professionally presented that it not only reflected well on your organisation but it also put Port Shepstone and the Country Club on the map of good places to be. We appreciate, as a fellow Service Club, that what we saw was only the tip of the iceberg and that the planning and organising of such an event must have been colossal and it all came together so well. We are proud of you and wish you continued success going forward. Kind Regards, Jim Docherty President, Rotary Club of Port Shepstone

ort Shepstone Lions once again hosted the National Association of Blind Bowlers Tournament. The event was held at the Riverside Sports Club in Uvongo during the weekend of 15 and 16 August. A number of blind bowlers travelled down to the South Coast to participate in this annual tournament which that play against a Uvongo Bowling Club team.

Blind bowlers in action

Port Shepstone Lions have been involved with the NABB National Association of Blind Bowlers (KZN Region) since 1981. The annual weekend tournament means a great deal to the blind bowlers and for the past 34 years the Port Shepstone Lions have organised the competition and secured sponsorship for travel, meals and accommodation. Apart from the games, the weekend includes accommodation and meals. The Port Shepstone Lion Ladies also provided and served dinner on the Saturday evening. The Uvongo bowlers ended up winning the tournament however they were challenged by their counterparts to a game of bowls at midnight during load-shedding!

The Club most grateful to event organiser Madeleine Gouws who, on behalf of the Lions, organised the event as well as several sponsorships. Madeleine has very kindly decided to continue where her father, the late Lion Hans Wagenaar left off. The Club is also indebted to their main sponsor, National Braiding Industries as well as all other sponsors who made generous donations towards this very successful annual project.

uring the weekend of 8/9 August, Port Shepstone Lions catered for the Experimental Aircraft Association Convention held at Margate Airport. Master chefs cooking up a storm (left) are Lions Hilton Horsley, Peter Mc Killen and George Legget. All proceeds were deposited into the club’s charity account and the left over food was donated to the residents of Reinhardt’s Place in Pumula who were very appreciative of this kind gesture.

n appreciation of their assistance behind the pub at the 2015 South Coast Lions Show, Port Shepstone Lions decided to donate an amount of R5000-00 to the Margate 46 Round Table. Lion President Jeff Smith and Lion Denis Meyer visited the Margate Table meeting during August as their guests and thoroughly enjoyed the proceedings, this despite the ongoing interruptions from their raiding Sheppie Table counterparts! After the meeting Lion President Jeff officially handed over the cheque to Margate Round Table Chairman Jaco Venter (photo right).

ort Shepstone Lions raided their Round Table neighbours en masse directly after the club’s directors meeting on Thursday 10th September. The raid coincided with Margate Round Table’s raid to their Sheppie counterparts. Excellent fellowship and fun was enjoyed by all present. Lion President Jeff Smith also used the opportunity to present Port Shepstone Round Table Chairman Etienne Du Plessis with a cheque for R5000-00 in appreciation for all their assistance during the 2015 South Coast Lions Show.

eteran Lion and octogenarian Mike Rodda is finally home after spending over a month in hospital where he underwent hip replacement surgery. Lion Mike is seen left enjoying a luncheon with friends and family at their home, My Den Bed and Breakfast in Oslo Beach. The club’s Board of Directors have decided to change Lion Mike’s membership status to “affiliate” owing to the fact that it is difficult for him to attend meetings. Lion Mike remains a very special member of the club’s family.

T

he August Lions’ Bingo session was very well attended. Members once again fetched most of the participants from their places of residence and together with the Sheppie Lion Ladies, fed and nourished the guests. Lion Hilton Horsley did the honours in calling out the numbers, very ably assisted by club mascot, “King” lion. For the record, no money changes hands during these bingo sessions. Winners get to choose a chocolate or packet of biscuits, all of which are paid for by the club’s charity account.
