am coming to the end of the most amazing two years of my short Lionistic “Career”. What an amazing journey it has been as President of the best Club in the District.

year with our Show on the horizon.

The line up looks awesome and thanks has to go to the work that Lion Jean and the entire team have put in to make this a successful event.

The recent Cape Town Convention was an experience to top all conventions. Council Chairman Denis did us proud and it was a privilege to be associated with him and also Port Shepstone Club. It was great to have so many of us in support of Denis throughout the Convention. For some of us it was a Convention of many highlights. The most notable being that of our newest self awarded Melvin Jones Fellowship Award –Mike “Merv told me to stand” Heathcote. Well done Mike on your Mervin Bones Award.

We also have to thank the fund raising team for making the Cape Town trip more affordable for us.

Just before that is our Golf Day, well done again to Lion Gary Vogt for all your efforts, and to Illovo for their ongoing sponsorship during these difficult times.

Dear Gaby and Lions, Thank you so much for your generous donation and organising the walk. The amount of R5, 000.00 is very much appreciated by the South African Guide Dogs Association for the Blind. We will send you regular updates about the puppy that you have sponsored who will bring many hours of independence to a blind person. The tax certificate will follow shortly from the JHB office.

If you can do a walk this year we would really appreciate it, and I would definitely be able to attend and possibly even have a stall at the show?

We are still striving to increase our output of trained Guide, Service and Autism dogs and it is only through support like yours that we can manage this. The main objective of the Association is to improve the mobility, independence of action and overall well-being of visually-impaired people and other persons with disabilities and we receive no government funding and without support like yours we simply wouldn’t be able to continue. That’s why we’re so incredibly grateful for every contribution you make, however big or small it may be.

There are millions people living with sight loss and sadly this number increases yearly. Sight loss is something that sighted people cannot begin to imagine and at Guide Dogs, we are here to make sure that these people do not lose their independence and freedom too.

Whatever area of our work you are interested in supporting you can trust that your gift will be used to change the lives of people of all ages living with sight loss, and to make a significant difference to the lives of these people.

Another superb example of “Teamwork makes the Dream work!”

he Lions Club of Port Shepstone in conjunction with South Coast Tourism, will be hosting their 32nd Annual South Coast Lions Show from 14th - 16th July at the Port Shepstone Country Club.

This popular annual event promises to provide great family entertainment with something for everyone. Some of this year’s Show highlights include : Lions “Laugh Out Loud” Comedy Show, Thursday 13th July from 6pm until late. Tickets are R200-00 pp / R1600-00 for a table of 8 (includes dinner) and can be purchased through Chrissie on 076 221 6008 / cwchristinewil@gmail.com.

“Friday Night Party Night”, Friday 14th July from 6pm until late, featuring top bands.

“Saturday Night Live”, Saturday 15th July from 3pm until late, featuring Joburg’s most popular party band, Dixie Hillbillies, as well as various other bands.

An exciting array of arena events are also being organised for this year’s Show.

The weekend event will also showcase a huge trade expo which involves hundreds of local businesses and entrepreneurs as well as delicious food, a funfair with plenty of adrenaline rides and Mix93.8FM, Gauteng’s fastest growing community radio station, who will broadcast live from the showgrounds!

Gate prices are Adults - R50, Pensioners and Children U18 – R25, Children U12 – Free (if accompanied by their parents).

These prices have remained unchanged for the past decade!

3 delegates from the Port Shepstone Lions Club attended the 53rd Lions Multiple District 410 (Southern Africa) "Celebration" Convention which was held at Century City Convention Centre in Cape Town from 26-30 April. The 4 day Convention gathering was attended by approximately 410 delegates from Lions Clubs across South Africa, Namibia and Swaziland as well as a delegation from Germany and Zimbabwe.

The main theme of the Convention was to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Lionism worldwide and the 60th anniversary of Lionism in Southern Africa.

During the first day, Port Shepstone Lion and Council Chairman Denis Meyer presided over the 4th and final meeting of the Council of Governors for this fiscal year. This was followed by a special dinner attended by all Past District Governors from around Southern Africa who were in attendance at Convention. 3 of the 4 districts held their Cabinet Meetings on the second day followed by a membership/leadership training session for all delegates. The day ended off in fine style with a very special welcoming ceremony which included a troupe of Cape Minstrels who entertained delegates with their upbeat music unique to the Cape Town area.

All 4 districts held their respective District Conventions the following day and it was during these conventions that the incoming Second Vice Governors, First Vice Governors and District Governors were elected by all delegates present. It was a proud moment for Port Shepstone Lions when their very own Club President, Lion Jeff Smith was elected as Second Vice District Governor for District 410-C. This was followed by the formal Convention Banquet where Council Chairman Denis delivered a welcoming address highlighting major service initiatives undertaken by Lions Clubs throughout the region. International Leadership Medals were presented to all 4 District Governors followed by a number of International President's Certificates of Appreciation being presented to 17 dedicated Lions from clubs throughout the Multiple District. Pick 'n Pay's Raymond Ackerman was acknowledged as “Citizen of the Year� in recognition of Pick 'n Pay's ongoing support of the Lions Feeding Scheme in Cape Town. During his address, Lions Clubs International official representative, Lebanese Lion and Past International Director Salim Moussan, paid tribute to the dedication and services provided by Lions members throughout Southern Africa. He then presented Council Chairman Denis Meyer with a 2017 Lions Clubs International Proof Silver Dollar in recognition of his leadership of the Council of Governors during the past year.

The main Convention of Lions Clubs was held on the final day and chaired by Council Chairman Denis Meyer. During the Convention, several Multiple District projects were highlighted and discussed, a number of awards were presented to Multiple District Officers and the incoming Council Chairman, King Williams Town Lion Russell Volker was inducted. A special award was also presented to the Port Shepstone Lions in recognition of the club's support of Council Chairman Denis during his term of office. It was a very proud moment for Council Chairman Denis when all 4 Governors presented him with an engraved silver flask in recognition of his leadership during the past fiscal year. This was followed by a very enjoyable fancy dress carnival themed farewell party which was attended by all delegates.

The festive atmosphere, live band and the colourful display of clubs present made for a very enjoyable evening.

Port Shepstone Lions were, once again, one of the largest delegations at the Convention which was an incredible achievement considering the distance they had to travel and the costs involved.

017 marks the 100th Anniversary of Lions Clubs International and their services to communities around the globe. To commemorate the centenary year, the Lions Club of Port Shepstone allocated R100 000-00 to South Coast Hospice. This funding was raised through the Club's annual Lions/Illovo Sugar Golf Day and Annual South Coast Lions' Show.

Approximately R30 000-000 of the funds have been used to purchase of a Hi Lo Flex Electric Function bed with specialised mattress which prevents the formation of pressure (bed) sores. This luxury bed has all the features of a hospital bed without the hospital look and boasts an adjustable back rest, adjustable knee section, side protection bars and overhead chain support.

An ultrasound scanner to the value of R52 000-00 was also purchased and donated. Bedside ultrasound scanning in a hospice setting is a relatively new initiative. Historically, Hospice has referred patients to a hospital for ultrasound scans. Now all patients with possible ascites can be scanned prior to drainage. Bedside ultrasounds are non-invasive and well tolerated, aiding diagnosis for patients with suspected ascites, lung blockages or bladder problems.

The remainder of the funding will go towards the refurbishment of the Hospice Training Centre.

In recognition of the ongoing support provided by the Port Shepstone Lions Club, South Coast Hospice have decided to name one of their in-patient wards, the Lions Room. Members of the Port Shepstone Lions recently visited the Lions Room to admire the newly acquired equipment and facilities.

During April. Lion Pieter Van Niekerk presented Christopher Langazaan with a magnified book reader which he is finding very useful. Christopher, a teacher at Zamokusle Special School, is 85% blind.

During May, Port Shepstone Lion Ladies Estelle O’Neill and Audrey Leggett delivered gift parcels for new born babies to Port Shenstone hospital.

ason Price, a Pastor at YouthworX in Shelly Beach addressed the club’s April meeting and spoke about the current programs and needs at this popular youth centre. Amongst their needs are accommodation units that require tiling. The Club has decided to sponsor the costs of the labour and adhesive to tile approximately 50 square metres of floor space.

t is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of our fellow Lion and friend in service, Lion Terry Jones who was Called to Higher Service on Sunday 23rd April 2017.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Barbara and the family.

Lion Terry was a member of the Port Shepstone Lions Club for over 2 decades before emigrating to the UK and joining the Enfield Lions Club. Terry was a very dedicated Lion who lived and breathed Lionism. He was involved in almost every aspect of the club and in recognition of his commitment, the club awarded him with a Melvin Jones Fellowship and a Life Membership Award.

Lion Terry achieved success, lived well, laughed often and loved much; he gained the respect of intelligent people and the love of little children.

He filled a niche and accomplished his task, He has left the world better than he found it, whether by a brighter flower, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul.

He always saw the best in others and gave the best he had; his life was an inspiration, and his memory will be a benediction.

Terry was a true LION. Rest in Peace dear friend until we meet again..........

n 12th May, a very jovial group of Sheppie Lions and Ladies attended a farewell bash for Lion Mike Heathcote who will be away in France for the next 3 months. The event was held at the home of Lion Jean Masson and Lion Lady Cathy Volker. Lion Alastair Warman attended to the braai, the Lion Ladies provided delicious side dishes and Lion Denis Meyer provided music which kept the dancing going until the early hours of the following morning. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of a “Mervin Bones Award” to Harry - in recognition of trying to impersonate a Melvin Jones Fellow! Harry (who is not yet a MJF) stood up with the Melvin Jones Fellows during the Convention Banquet in Cape Town and has paid the price ever since!!
