What is your most memorable call?

I was working on a Thanksgiving day. I took a Domestic Disturbance call involving two brothers and the last piece of chicken. Both brothers were in their 40's. One stabbed the other with a fork. That must was some good chicken.

What are some stress relievers you recommend to help cope with the demands of the job?

Taking 5 extra minutes from time to time for yourself and walk around.

What advice would you give a newer employee?

Always put your best foot forward and take the job one day at a time.

What is the most challenging part of the job?

Not being able to help people right away.

What are you looking forward to most in the future?

I would love to continue to grow in the bureau, possibly make supervisor and help everyone at any time in the bureau.

Every October, the nation observes National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast cancer is a disease that affects both men and women and is among the most common cancers. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer in her lifetime. Next year, new breast cancer diagnoses are expected to number more than 200,000 for women and more than 2,000 for men.

National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program Early detection is key. The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), helps low-income, uninsured, and under-served women gain access to lifesaving screening services for early detection of breast and cervical cancers. This program provides clinical breast examinations, mammograms, and Pap tests for participants as well as diagnostic testing for women whose screening outcome is abnormal. Women age 40 and above should talk to their doctors about when and how often to get a mammogram. To find free and low-cost screenings near you, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to use their interactive map.

What can I do to improve my chances of staying breast cancer free?

There are many steps you and your loved ones can take to improve your chances of staying healthy: Conduct monthly self-exams. In addition to medical screenings, the National Breast Cancer Foundation and many medical professionals recommend a monthly self-exam. To learn how to do a breast self-exam, check out this selfexam guide offered by NationalBreastCancer.org.

Quit smoking. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), smoking is a significant risk factor for breast and many other types of cancer. Non-smokers are at lower risk than smokers regardless of your age or how long you have been a smoker.

Exercise more. Regular exercise and a healthy diet can also lower your risk factors.

Logging on Two Man Units

by Francisco Lozada Some Officers now have a new mobile CAD integrated into the squad cars computer.

To Log In : This mobile CAD allows you to log on after clicking the Intergraph mobile cad program on the main screen.

To log in officers, enter their car number and P number.

To Add Units: After logging in, officers simply need to click on the tab labeled patrol.

There will be two boxes. The top box is for the main unit.

The bottom box has a drop-down type feature.

The box on the bottom contains the names of the officers in the unit.

To add a name, click on the blank area underneath the names and type the name of the officer This will activate a drop down and once it comes up click on the officer's name to add them.

It seemed extremely simple. There should not be any excuse for any officer to not enter their IBM. Bonus: He also told me that with this new CAD, officers are unable to disable the tracking.

I attended the TENA 2021 Conference in Kingsport, Tennessee.

I found it beneficial for personal and professional development. It helps to renew and refresh when serving others.

from SPRD Katrina Towles We drove to Kingsport in the Communications Durango. Oh my, what a ride. We talked and laughed about a lot of things. The fellowship was enjoyable, but the vehicle seemed to be on its last road trip. The rubber was falling off the windshield wipers, brakes making sounds, and the transmission felt as though it was slipping. We all prayed along with Metrica and Tarrashea patting the steering wheel saying "Come on now".

The mileage is low but the pedal has to be put to the floor. Ooops, Don't forget to ask Antonae about the Ford Fusion...….lol

AWARD WINNING PSAP Memphis brings home the award for Dispatch Incident of the Year, for the handling of the I-40 Bridge Interstate shut down.

TENA CONFERENCE REFLECTON: TARRASHEA SIMPSON I did have a good time with a couple of my supervisors and coworkers outside of the communications walls. I was surprised to find Erica May speaking and her class was good. It really opened my eyes to looking at the concept of following in a more positive light. The classes that I went to were very informative. The classes provided a refresher on how I need to view my role here at ECB. I went axe throwing for the first time and I now feel like a pro . I’m looking forward to going here in Memphis soon. During the trip, Antonae Parker discussed us having different committees to help bring us together more and also work on team building. I know everyone will not be game for it and some may feel as if it won’t work. I for one, am excited about it and looking forward to what it can bring. Paul McCalister from Nashville provided an analogy that really stood out to me. He said “Don’t be the carrot and soften in hot water. Don’t be the egg and harden in hot water. Be the coffee bean and change the hot water.”

TENA CONFERENCE REFLECTON: METRICA SPEARS I was given the opportunity to attend the TENA conference in Kingsport, TN. Early Sunday morning, we filled up the gas tanks, grabbed some breakfast and hit the road for a 7 1/2 hour drive through the beautiful mountains. While the trip seemed long, it also gave us the opportunity to laugh and talk about things we wouldn't normally talk about in the comm center. After checking into the hotel we attended dinner and then met with other conference attendees for a night of live music, Jenga, cornhole and axe throwing fun!

I attended several informative classes including Culturvating: People Before the Process, Be the Leader You Don't Want to Quit, Effective Communications for Leadership Success, Dispatching During Civil Unrest, and Courageous Followers presented by our very own Erica May. While I enjoyed and took something away from all classes, the one I will reflect on is Culturvating: People before the Process. This class spoke on how culture is defined as shared beliefs and values. It is led by management to help shape team members. All involved must understand the long term vision and change attitudes. We can "culturvate" or prepare the soil by making the choice to be positive.

One of the things that stuck with me is the analogy of the carrot, egg, and coffee bean.

When adversity arises, which one are you?

When all 3 of these items are added to hot boiling water they have different outcomes.

The carrot went in strong and came out soft and weak. The egg went in fragile, but the inside hardened. The coffee beans were unique however. After they were in the boiling water, they changed the water.

When things are at their worst, try not to wilt and let it lose your strength like the carrot or become hardened and stiff like the egg. Be the bean! Get better and change the situation around you. Choose positivity! When we are all positive and understand the vision we have no choice but to thrive.

NEW DISPATCHER ALERT BRANDY PICKETT Brandy is originally from Pittsburgh, PA and began her dispatch journey in December 2020.

She completed the training program last month and has been released as a dispatcher. She is a die-hard Steelers fan and is already learning to prioritize her mental health.

How many started in your class?

We started off with 15 and we are down to 6. We are a really close group, and I am thankful for how supportive we all are towards each other.

What do you like most about the job?

What advice would you give to the next class?

I love that every day you will experience something new when you come into the office.

Do not give up. Tears will be shed during this process, but it will only make you stronger. Use your resources and make your mental health a priority.

What has been the most challenging aspect of the job?

Do you have any suggestions for management to make the training program better?

The most challenging aspect of the job is finding that work-life balance. When you spend so much time at work, you sometimes lose track of spending quality time with your family and friends.

I would encourage them to be receptive about new ideas that are presented to them.

TRAINING REFLECTIONS w/ Brandy Pickett What was training like for you?

Whew! Training! Personally, training for me was very demanding. Moving from Pittsburgh, PA to Memphis, TN I experienced a huge culture shock. I knew absolutely nothing about Memphis outside of the Blues, BBQ, and the Memphis Grizzlies. In fact, my classmates would encourage me to drive around the interstate to become familiar with the city. This may have worked for some, but it did not work for me! I remember contemplating whether this job was for me and even began to apply for positions within the sports industry.

Luckily, I had a great support system both in Pittsburgh and in Memphis that continued to motivate me throughout this entire process. Now please refer to me as PRD Brandy Pickett.

Do you have any specific trainers you would like to shout out? Or people here that have helped you?

First and foremost, I would like to give my day one trainer a huge shoutout, Mrs. Jazmin Eley-Moore. Thank you for being that ray of sunshine on my stormy days. I wouldn't have made it this far without your support early on.

Secondly, I would like to thank LaQuange Watkins. You constantly fought for me even when I did not want to fight for myself. Thank you for believing in me and forcing me to step outside of my comfort zone.

Punctuality is a requirement for continued employment with the Memphis Police Department.

Tardiness Definition: An employee will be considered tardy if they are not at their duty assignment ready for duty when the supervisor begins roll call.

I have not been late this year and I think in my entire 24 year career, I have been late less than 5 times. I'm not just on time for work, I'm on time for everything. As a business owner, I am on time for my customers. If they are late, that's them. But I will be there ready to serve when I said I would. I don't like to rush. I arrive at work at least 30 minutes before my shift. I like to prepare myself and fix my attitude before my work night begins. I'll admit, it's not easy with all this overtime we are working, but I just set my alarm clock and get up. Also, I think being at work and being on time for work is the right thing to do to be fair to my co-workers. ~Tondra Taylor-Hailey

I've been late 3 times this year. Once I was delayed by a train and the other two times, I was rushing but just didn't make it. It was my fault because I didn't leave the house on time. It's important for us to be at work on time because our co-workers that are already working are ready to go home. Also we are being paid to be at work at a certain time. I like to get to work at least 20 minutes early when I'm working overtime so I can sign up for a radio instead of the phones. I also try to avoid working Crump Station. I have learned to set my alarm and just go ahead and get up, because I don't like to rush. I'm doing better. - Omari Edwards

Right now most of us are pretty much working 12 hours every day and everybody wants to go home on time. Being late can prevent someone from being relieved on time. Some things that I do to prepare myself for work include laying my clothes out, making sure my car has gas and preparing my lunch. I try to arrive at work at least 20 minutes prior to the beginning of the shift. I don't like to rush. I like to get my water, wipe down my console and be ready to log in when we start. I have not been late this year. I've only had to sign the late book once and that was during my first year. - Gwen Conner

With the staffing shortage we have, everyone is tired now. But being on time for work is a basic sign of respect. Even though we are tired, there are still rules to follow. It would not be fair to my co-workers who have already been here 12 hours for me to be late. Sometimes it seems as if people just don't care. There are times when I will take a call after my shift ends, just because those coming in haven't logged in and the phones are busy. I will even take a second call. Then it's disheartening when I leave and go to the parking lot (after not immediately getting up because we are in queue) and people coming in for overtime are coming up the stairs or even worse, still on the parking lot. I have had one late occurrence this year. Every day I am here at least 15 minutes early. I use that time to get coffee, use the restroom, and wipe down my console. There are those that come to work late all the time. I try to look past it because I don't know if there is a situation I don't know about or if the supervisors are documenting it. But just from appearances, it is downright disrespectful. - Cori Ringwald I struggle with getting to work on time, but I know that it is important. We have a very important job that requires us to be here to serve the citizens. When I am late it is all because I don't prepare and do the things I am supposed to do at home. I am working on it. - Monetta Hampton Punctuality is important but I think with us working all this overtime some leniency should be given- especially when we have seven day work weeks with overtime every day. I haven't been the best in being on time. Most of my struggles come from my overtime details where I have to come in early. It's hard on the body. When I say leniency I think maybe two times a month we could be given a grace period. Coming in late multiple times a week is excessive. - Cassandra Berry

I understand that punctuality is important. First, being on time shows that you respect your job and your co-workers. It also is a measure of integrity. I was raised to value being on time. I used to consistently be at work at least 15 minutes early. That gives me enough time to gauge the staffing, adjust the board if need be and prepare for my shift. Honestly, I have been struggling with punctuality lately. Things do come up. For instance, one time I had to care for my mom and I was late. Those are understandable. Other times I have not been able to find my keys and I have been caught by the train. Those are not acceptable. It's my fault because I didn't prepare well. I'm going to do better. On a brighter note, my daughter works at 201 in the property room. She is very punctual. She arrives at work at least 30 minutes early everyday. I'm proud of her. (Hey Shardonnay) I'm just going to get back to my 15 minutes though. - Katrina Towles

In this job punctuality is a requirement. Even putting Policy & Procedure aside, it is the right thing to do. It is the responsible and the mature thing to do. It's important for me to be on time because I want my co-workers to see me as a dependable team member. I can't ask anything of others that I do not model myself. I try to arrive at work at least 20 minutes before my shift begins. It helps to be able to sit in the car for a few minutes and gather myself before entering the building. I am able to mentally prepare myself to face whatever challenges the work day brings. My punctuality was built from the 5 years I lived in Atlanta. If you know anything about Atlanta traffic, you MUST leave early to be on time. It doesn't matter if the GPS says your destination is 15 minutes away. If you want to be on time, leave (at least) an hour early. I have also found that my habits rub off on my friends, even the ones that are known for being late. When they are meeting me, they arrive on time. Not because I'm going to scold them or anything, but just because they don't want to keep me waiting.

DID YOU KNOW? You can tell the model year for any vehicle built after 1980 by the VIN number. The 10th digit of the VIN number is known as the model year indicator and will tell you the year of the vehicle. This can be very helpful for officers (and dispatchers!) on vehicles that are badly damaged, burned or abandoned when there may otherwise be no way of ascertaining the correct model year.

The corresponding model years are as follows: Note the letters I, O, Q and Z and the number 0 are never used for a model year indicator

No one wants to be the call-taker who takes the call from someone they love or care about. No one wants to hear a family member or friend on the other end of a 9-1-1 call for help. What we do takes strength. What we do requires resilience. What we do gives hope.

A few months back, a call was taken by one of our own. No names were given – only that 2 people had been shot. At the time of the call, it was considered routine. At the time of the call, it was, as many of them are, just another call.

As the situation unfolded and information was gathered, that call became more than just another call. It was a call felt by us all. One of the victims was the son of a coworker and friend, Emergency Response Call Operator (ERCO) Michelle Collins. Her 17yo son Ja’Kobe White, was shot and killed by and the family does not know who is responsible.

Tragedy struck Michelle's family and the ECB on this night. From the phone call I received, I knew emotions were high. I was not present physically; however, when I was told what happened, my heart dropped and my mind began to wander. Knowing I could do nothing, I jumped from my bed anyway with the sole intent of being here and providing some form of comfort, some form of relief, or just something. I felt sadness. Again, I could do nothing – I was home with COVID. When I was told that our Administrator Michael Spencer and Interim MPD Director Ryall were en-route to be with Michelle, I felt somewhat relieved only because I knew MPD and ECB were represented. I hoped Michelle would feel that her entire ECB family was there.

While showing up for work is key, being present and being available to answer the call is paramount to it all. The job we do requires us to be here, not only physically, but mentally. We are here to, at it’s simplest form, provide a service.

What we do at our greatest moment is show compassion for the citizens and men and women of the Memphis Police Department. We give hope. We respond. We help.

Michelle has been interviewed numerous times. She has expressed her pain and emotion for all to see. She has shared her anger and frustration. She's telling her story and sharing her son's life in the hope of preventing tragedy from happening to another mother, another child, another family. Let's support her.
