1. Installation of your Streaming device

• For a full, immersive experience for the viewer, the larger the screen the better.

• We recommend a 55inch TV or larger for best results (helps to achieve the immersion effect).

• Another good way to show and view Memory-Lane content is to use an HD or 4K projector. We recommend projector use in a semi-dark environment when possible.

• You can access your account and the streaming content using any web browser, or using our app on any of the following devices connected to your TV: o Apple TV o Roku o Amazon FireStick • You can also use our app on iOS, and cast with Chromecast as well

Note that the cinematic ambiance that is created with a retro projector induces a much stronger relaxation response in the viewer, with therefore greater opportunities for reminiscence and reviviscence.

4. Pre-programmed, or custom programming – your choice Our sessions can be displayed in the living space and can serve as a temporal reference for viewers throughout the day and night. Activities can be either structured or spontaneous, depending on your specific needs throughout day or evening, or even at night if the viewer is active during those hours.

You have several options with Memory Lane TV 1. Preprogrammed 24/7, broadcast-style channel and automatic circadian rhythm restoration Resetting the circadian rhythm of viewers by temporal referencing is one of Memory Lane TV’s advantages. It is not uncommon for people living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia to become ”disconnected” from the natural rhythm of the day, and our solution helps to restore this connection to the greatest degree possible, albeit within the limitations of each stage of the pathology.

And our pre-programmed broadcast-style channel makes this reconnection even easier, since you won’t have to manually select the time-cue programming throughout the day. It’s a nice option to have when you need a little respite.

From the main library, select the 24/7 channel that’s best for your time zone and let it play. These channels are programmed to take several factors into account: Times for meal breaks throughout the day with content to incentivize appetite; occupational therapy to engage the viewers through quizzes and reminiscence therapy; entertainment with music and sound stimulation or old films; afternoon and evening care with our medleys designed to quiet the atmosphere and redirect the attention to a mindfulness state, a quiet place for the mind, and of course, the daily rhythm time cues.

A la cart, on demand programming 2. Navigate using seasonal and time of day playlists Memory Lane TV offers a clear distinction between morning, afternoon and evenings. Our source of entertainment and soothing images follows the rhythm of the day and offers temporal references to the viewers. Sunrises and sounds of birds in the morning will give a sense of morning time, sunsets at night gives clues it’s the end of the day, while night films may feature stars and rising moons that are designed to accompany and limit erranding around. These small clues, accompanied with our sound designs, help relieve stress and anxiety as they offer new temporal references throughout the day that caregivers can refer to.

3. Navigate our collection by category, depending on your particular needs in the moment Our first category is called Medleys. Medleys are a collection of 25 to 45 minute “sessions” that take the viewer on a plot free, positive, reminiscence experience. We produce our medley films based on our study of attention spans and following a specific methodology taking several therapeutic factors into account.

Engage and interact with the viewer Unless you are using the session to quiet the atmosphere and put the veiewer in a meditative mood, we encourage and recommend the caregiver, after and also during each session, to engage and interact with the viewer or viewers, asking questions about the images you are sharing, pausing the films if necessary.

You can refer to our online session guide for ideas and suggestions to achieve optimal engagement.

Some of the sessions offer visuals to print and ideas of simple ways to engage the viewer through sensory stimulation, using objects to enhance the session, keywords and techniques to use for each particular session.

5. Using the content General Set Up • Exhibit Memory-Lane TV sessions is in a slightly darkened, quiet room.

• We recommend using Memory-Lane 10 to 15 times per week for multisensory stimulation.

• You may allow Memory-Lane TV to keep running between planned sessions, playing our “Dream Sessions” content. This series of films is composed of Nature, photographs, and other relaxing or meditative content designed to induce a relaxation response in the viewer. You can use these segments as you need throughout the day, from minutes to hours.

• The larger the display, the better the impact. Either by projection or large screen television, bigger displays are more immersive, and thereby, more effective.

• Sound is also a crucial element of the stimulation, so try to keep distractions to a minimum.

Note: In a facility setting, it is important that one person on the staff be responsible for running the Memory-Lane TV programing and should be familiar with running the technical aspects: TV, streaming device, remote control, and olfactory diffuser.

Different sessions may require different set ups for best results, so here is what we recommend: 1. Schedule a session. Choose a film from the catalogue, taking into account your audience and the type of focus or subject matter you want the session to have. Some films are better for calling forth reminiscences, such as those on music and dance, others focus on natural beauty and are better at helping to reground the viewer in the circadian rhythm, sundowning syndrome can be addressed with our medleys, and so on. Refer to our online guide and catalog to customize the experience for the viewers.

2. Install and test the (optional) olfactory stimulation system, if you are using it. If you have opted to use our olfactory stimulation tools during the session, make sure to either (a) get the personal diffuser dots ready, or (b) test the diffuser prior to starting the content playback. If using the diffuser, ensure it is close enough to the viewer to be impactful, but not so close it is overpowering. Choose the aroma recommended for use with the specific programming to be shown and/or paired with circadian rhythm content.

3. Prepare the viewer(s) (for example, a loved one cared for at home or a group of residents in a care facility). While the viewer(s) is(are) coming into the viewing room, Memory-Lane TV should be on, playing a Nature Session from the catalogue while setting up. Set a positive tone and greet each person as they come in.

4. Introduce the program with a smile.

Before starting playback, emphasize the fact that there is no plot to follow, nothing to “understand” (sometimes no narration), and that the films will help each viewer to dream and relax. It may also help to explain that the films are not very long.

5. Play the film. Keep the remote-control close by to adjust the volume or stop the film to interact with the viewers.

If selecting content a la cart (i.e. on-demand), be mindful about selecting appropriate material for the current time of day: • • • •

Morning films should be shown before noon.

Afternoon films can be shown before 4 pm.

Evening films can be shown by 4 pm and later.

Night sessions can be display on a loop from 7 pm until 6 am.

That guidance notwithstanding, you are free to repeat content as you wish - it won’t detract from the efficacy.

4. After viewing, be sure to bring up the lights slowly and proceed with interaction with the viewers, following the guidelines and protocol for the module. With some content, we provide key questions to engage viewers (for individual or group use) about the experience.

For afternoon sessions, here are some additional recommendations: • Interact during the session with viewers. Do not hesitate to pause the film to ask questions if you want a viewer or viewers to engage with the film.

Tip for use in group settings …

You might try saying something like: “Hello. This morning (or afternoon, etc.), we are going to watch a film about (summarize the description from the session catalogue). I hope you enjoy it.

This is not like regular TV; these programs are for us to enjoy in amore dream-like way. There is no narration, no voice over, no plot, nothing to follow. It’s just imagery and sound. You can talk during the film if you like. The film is short and will last approximately 20 minutes. Are we ready to start?

Yes? OK, Let’s go!”

• After the session, continue with another film from the catalogue. Do not turn the programming off while leaving the viewing area or while moving on to other activities in the same space.

Additional Ways to Engage You can also use our program as an occupational therapy tool. We offer imagery downloads, games, series of questions, guidelines for olfactory stimulation, and suggestions for objects that can be brought in for viewers to touch, all with the aim of engaging viewers before, during, and after the sessions.

You can engage the viewer with different sensory tools during each session: • The sense of sight and hearing, through the auditory and visual sensory stimulation generated by our purpose-built content • The sense of smell, through the olfactory stimulation “toolbox” option.

• The sense of touch, through objects you may bring in that relate to the films being watched.

• The sense of taste, through a possible tasting of relevant foods and beverages that a facility staff person (or at home, a home caregiver) can arrange.

6. Additional information on Set up (Internet, Audio, Projectors…)

Internet Connection The Internet connection from your host company should be fast enough to support at least HD television-quality transmission for your playback to be smooth and uninterrupted.

Audio Quality For optimum immersive experience, it is recommended to have a sound system that can deliver surround sound in order to optimize the impact of audio content. External speakers known as “5.1” (five point one) is the common name for six channel surround sound audio systems. 5.1 is now the most commonly used layout in commercial cinemas, home theaters, and computer systems.

While a surround sound system is recommended to increase audio perception in the films, it is certainly not a requirement. And some of our content, the nature films for example, are not encoded for surround sound.
