Mywife and I were visiting our native California recently, and one night, after returning to the home I grew up in from a nice dinner with some relatives, we found that the hot water heater had given out. The unit was only three years old, and it gave me the occasion, once again, to (happily) complain about the low quality of the modern appliances and products that we use to presumably make our lives easier.
The products our manufacturing industries once made were of far higher quality than the ones available at stores today. My mother always used to say that her old Maytag washing machine lasted forty years and seldom needed to be repaired, and that when it did need to be repaired the appliance repairman came and repaired it, and the bill was always small. She would contrast this with the modern practice, which consists of calling the repairman only to have him tell you that the cost of fixing your inferior, modern machine is higher than simply replacing it. I cannot count the times I have heard a recommendation to replace something come out of the mouth of the person whose job it is to repair it.
The defenders of the new will say that modern products have more capabilities and features. And this is true. They can do ever so many things. My wife's newer model SUV, for example, beeps at you if you even think of switching lanes. Beeping, flashing lights, and strange vibrations now assault us from every direction. I'm thinking of my refrigerator here. And all these new features make the unable-to-repair problem even worse, since there are so many things that can now go wrong. Things don't last as long, and there is always some new thing with a lot of flashy features to replace it anyway, so that's what we do.
Modern education is just like this: It has replaced the old, solid, and well-built education that did its basic job of teaching reading, writing, and figgerin' (as my dad used to put it), with new and flashy programs that beep and blink and don't work well.
The new fancy education program at your new modern school, like your new refrigerator, can do so many more things than could be done before. Trouble is, the program can't do the one thing you really need it to do. The innovative new reading program fails to teach students to read and the new math program with the manipulatives doesn't help students master math facts and arithmetic. And it can't be repaired. The new program must be replaced with another newer, flashier program that itself will shortly be replaced by the next new thing, all equally as deficient— always with the promise that the next new thing will be the one to fix everything.
Our physical landfills grow at a faster and faster rate, with piles of rusting machinery and components, warranties still attached, that we were told would reliably replace our mothers' trusty old machines. Our education landfills, too, grow constantly with the detritus of "new" programs that prematurely failed. They are filled with growing mounds of acronyms that stand for some formerly new method of teaching something that we used to be able to teach simply and easily, smoldering heaps of programs with colorful covers that we were told would teach our children how to read or write or calculate that only ended up producing ignorance, and deteriorating piles of computerized games that were going to improve our students' thinking skills or teach them how to code but were discarded when schools realized they not only didn't work but were no longer needed.
Our modern schools beep and shake and flash, but they no longer wash the clothes very well, or produce clean dishes, or reliably keep food cold. And they're always having to be replaced. We should be talking about education the way my mother would talk about her new washing machine: "I want the old one back."

Edmund Burke once said, " Order is the foundation of all good things. " The Latin language reflects the inherent beauty of order and structure, which is why the best way of teaching Latin is also to reflect that order and structure in a meaningful and memorable way.
Start each class consistently with a greeting and prayer—in Latin, of course! This ritual becomes an instant signal to students to turn their minds and attention toward Latin as class begins. Rotating daily through several Latin prayers further reminds students of the beautiful connection between Latin and a Christian heritage. Next, have students recite several grammar forms, focusing on those they will need to know for upcoming assessments, but also spending time thoroughly reviewing all previously learned content. A formal ritual and recitation, no matter your setting, orients your students to the subject at hand, as well as instills confidence before they embark on a new lesson. After this important beginning routine, make sure to spend time reviewing vocabulary and grammar questions. Students will be learning new grammar questions and vocabulary in each lesson, but you need to have a plan in place to help them retain the material they have already worked so hard to learn. Using flashcards as well as the grammar question and vocabulary lists (found in the Appendix of the Form Series workbooks) will enable you to develop students' memory muscle in these two foundational areas.

Following this script frees you to teach the real, live students sitting before you with clarity and joy, as the pressure to "come up" with the material has been lifted. There is no need to be innovative in teaching Latin; you simply get to step into the stream of this great tradition along with your students.
It is best for students to have their books closed during the lesson so that their focus remains on your presentation as it is communicated on the board. (For students who are old enough, teacher-directed note taking could be a great option too.)
First, introduce the Latin saying. Write it on the board in both Latin and English and recite it for and then with your students. Discuss the cultural and historical significance, if any. Use the saying to teach any syntax as it relates to what students will be learning in the current lesson or have learned in the past.
Second, take the time to write down each new vocabulary word in full dictionary form with all meanings and any English derivatives on the board. Show students how the roots of both the Latin and English words connect. Ask word study questions so that students think through their vocabulary in depth: what part of speech these words are, what conjugation or declension, etc.
Third, explain the new grammar form by writing it out on the board and having students compare it to what they already know and then analyze it by discovering new patterns. Take the time to help students thoroughly memorize the new grammar form. The disappearing line technique (by which you write the form on the board, have students recite it, and then erase one word each time they recite it anew until the board is blank and students are reciting from memory) provides an excellent way to engage the new content and gives students the satisfaction of achievement even in a one-hour lesson.
Last, make it your goal to complete as many of the workbook exercises as you can with your students Working through these exercises ensures that students have an adequate grasp of the lesson. Model through part of each exercise for students, have volunteers complete another portion, and allow the rest to be done independently—but never let students flounder through workbooks without your guidance and support.
The well-ordered language of Latin deserves a wellordered lesson, and a well-ordered lesson equips students for the success they deserve in Latin too.

People who pay attention to education know that the question of how to teach children to read is a controversial one. But what they may not know is that it only became controversial relatively late, historically speaking.
There was a time when there was no phonetic alphabet as we know it. Written language, in fact, began with pictures that represented ideas. The most familiar example is Egyptian hieroglyphics. But the invention of the alphabet―a set of symbols that represent not ideas, but sounds―was a revolution of huge cultural proportions. Most historians attribute this innovation to the Phoenicians, a race of commercial traders who needed an easier way to communicate and conduct their business.
Rather than having to learn thousands of different symbols representing all the different spoken words in a language, the invention of the phonetic alphabet allowed for the quick learning of a few symbols that could be parlayed into a multitude of words.
Later, Greek and Roman students were taught their language's alphabet and how it was used to form words. Quintilian, the great Roman teacher of rhetoric, begins his Institutes of Oratory, written in the first century A.D., with an account of how children should be taught the letters and sounds of the Roman language. In our own country, we can trace the phonetic approach to reading and spelling back to the very first school text: The New England Primer, published in 1690.
It was not until the middle of the 1800s that any serious challenge was mounted against the dominant phonetic method of reading. Horace Mann, the father of American public schools, came back to America after a visit to Europe determined to change the way reading was taught—from a bottom-up approach in which letters and sounds are learned before words, to a top-down approach in which whole words are learned first. Mann's method came to dominate the teaching of reading in many parts of the country and inaugurated the "reading wars" as we have come to know them: the seemingly ceaseless contest between phonics and whole word approaches to teaching reading.
Mann had visited Europe during its historically brief flirtation with the "childcentered" romanticism advocated by figures such as Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi and his student Friedrich Wilhelm Froebel. This education romanticism most affected Germany and England (Mann was particularly impressed with the Prussian schools), although these two countries had largely righted themselves by the mid-twentieth century.
The whole word method reasserted itself with a vengeance in America around the turn of the twentieth century, with prominent educators such as Colonel Francis Wayland Parker, an influential Massachusetts superintendent, John Dewey, and Dewey's teacher at Johns Hopkins University, G. Stanley
The “Science of Reading” Has a History

Hall, all appealing to developments in child psychology to press their case. But it was William S. Gray, Dean of the University of Chicago's College of Education, and Arthur I. Gates, the director of the Institute of Educational Research at Columbia University, who were instrumental in the decadeslong dominance of whole word reading. From the 1920s, when Dewey's progressivism came to dominate the nation's schools, whole word approaches reigned supreme.
It was the whole word or "look-say" approach that produced the popular Dick and Jane readers, developed by Gray for Scott Foresman publishing, that became familiar to several generations of American students. And it was this approach that was savaged by one of the most popular books on education ever written: Why Johnny Can't Read by Rudolf Flesch, a book that landed like a bombshell in 1955 and has remained in continuous print ever since. The book launched a full-scale assault on the "look-say" reading method and reignited the "reading wars" that have continued, in intermittent waves, into the present day.
Flesch, an editor at the Saturday Evening Post , one of the most popular magazines of the time, used his prodigious skills as a popular writer (as well as a practical logician) to undermine the credibility of the whole language approach, calling it the "Chinese approach" to teaching English, pointing out that it tried to teach English, a phonetic language, as if it were a picture language like Chinese. To do this, he argued, was to abandon the numerous advantages phonetic languages have over non-phonetic languages.
Then, in 2000, the National Reading Panel released its report, which seemed to many at the time to put the last nail in the coffin of the view that the whole word approach to reading instruction best served the interests of children. One of the largest research projects ever conducted, it reviewed all of the existing research on reading and found conclusively that early, systematic instruction in phonics is the best way to teach children how to read. For a time, the panel's report seemed at least to have quieted much of the opposition to phonics.
Research continues to find the same thing: Phonics is the best way to teach reading.
Flesch's widely read book discredited the whole word method among a good portion of the reading public, but had limited effect on the education establishment, which for the most part refused to change its emphasis on "look-say," a fact that Flesch himself complained about in the sequel to his original book, Why Johnny Still Can't Read , published in 1981.
But despite the intransigence of the education establishment, the sixty years following the publication of Flesch's first book saw the slow deterioration of the credibility of the whole word approach. The next blow came with the publication in 1967 of Jeanne Chall's Learning to Read: The Great Debate . Chall's credentials included the fact that she headed the Harvard Reading Laboratory. The book catalogued the mounting research in favor of early instruction in phonics. Chall took a much less polemic approach to the issue than Flesch and cited a wealth of research evidence in favor of phonics.
The growing evidence put increasing pressure on those in charge of the nation's schools to rethink their loyalty to an approach that was beginning to lose its credibility even in the research community.
In the wake of the panel's report, major education publishers aligned their programs to its basic recommendations (partly because states such as California and Texas, the largest purchasers of school textbooks, now require phonics instruction). But because progressive educators continue to maintain a death grip on teacher training programs in the U.S., phonics is still limited in being deployed to its full effectiveness by so-called "balanced" or "mixed" reading approaches, which, although they reflect an acknowledgment that early training in lettersound correspondences and the basic patterns of English spelling are essential to good reading instruction, still limit the benefits of phonics by mixing it with whole word approaches. The latest development in the reading wars has been the rise of what is now being called the "Science of Reading." If the movement seems to exude an air of novelty it is only because of the new terminology. There is very little the Science of Reading adds to the argument for traditional phonics instruction that some of us have been making for the last sixty years, other than an appeal to more recent research that continues to find the same thing: Phonics is the best way to teach reading.
The only real innovation involved in the Science of Reading has been the effort to pair the evidence for the necessity of teaching decoding skills to that showing the importance of background knowledge in the reading process. But on this issue, too, there is little new. E. D. Hirsch was arguing this point as early as 1987 in his book Cultural Literacy, and, later, in his 2016 book Why Knowledge Matters. Students are better able to understand what they read if they can both decode words and understand the references in what they read. Hirsch's basic arguments have not changed, and his contentions have only been confirmed by newer research.
The advocates of the Science of Reading movement have climbed the mountain of scientific research, only to find a band of parents and teachers who have been sitting there for decades. They're a little late to the party, but when it comes to fighting bad education ideas, we need all the help we can get.

Forget matching, multiple choice, or fill-in-the-blanks.
If you want a child to really know—to truly own—a body of information, recitation is the surest way to go. Historically the sole method of testing, recitation requires mastery of a subject like no other testing mechanism can. With nowhere to hide and no opportunity for charms or tricks, it requires of the student focus, poise, and absolute certainty of the information offered. The child cannot make educated guesses or selectively opt out of questions. With recitation, each student is fully responsible for each fact. Recitation is a test that is pass or fail only.
But beyond providing an objective demonstration of knowledge acquired, recitation also fosters the kind of confidence we want our children to have—the kind earned by accomplishing a challenging feat, the kind that enables them to humbly believe they can learn anything. This is another reason why we hold recitations in such high regard.
Though we are offering a grammar school Latin recitation model here, don't hesitate to apply this example to other content areas. For American studies, recite the presidents, the states and capitals, the dates of the key wars; for math, recite multiplication tables or formulas; for Christian studies, recite Scripture, books of the Bible, the Ten Commandments. The possibilities are truly endless. Take advantage of this invaluable tool for learning. Here are some guidelines for recitation:
This is not an opportunity for students to show off but rather a time for them to demonstrate mastery, the fruits of their labors. Students should view recitation as a test and public speaking engagement in one. No slouching, slurring, or fidgeting. Stand up tall, hands to the side, eyes forward, shoulders back. Recitations can be a group activity or an individual one. Here we focus on an individual or family home recitation, but the exercise is easily adapted to classroom settings.
In best cases, the teacher also has the recitation content memorized. The teacher should be able to participate confidently as needed. Nothing proves to students that they can, in fact, complete a recitation like knowing someone else can do it. Peeking down at notes is fine, but not ideal. Pick a nice pace and cadence for your recitation and proceed with confidence.
This is not the time to seek out trivial or obscure pieces of information. Recitation should cover the essential information that will potentially be remembered for a lifetime. Keep the content consistent and cumulative. Try to keep the order of facts the same and the amount of information manageable. New content is best added at the end after old content is reviewed. Students who participate in regular recitations should eventually have the ability to recite without supervision (not that we recommend this), because they will be so confident with the content.
We've seen countless kindergartners recite thirty Bible verses in a row and older students deliver seventy stanzas of Horatius at the Bridge and recite Latin grammar forms for well over twenty minutes without pause. There is no greater gift we can give students than to expect excellence from them.
We are frequently asked exactly how we conduct recitations, and so we offer here a model for a Latin recitation that would be appropriate for Latina Christiana students.
1. Prayers & Songs: Start by saying, "Salvete, amici latinae! Surgite. Oremus." (Hello, friends of Latin! Stand up. Let us pray.) Students then stand and say all of the prayers and songs they know from Prima Latina, or otherwise begin with the prayers in the Appendix of Latina Christiana. The teacher prompts with the first few words of the prayer. Students are usually able to memorize the full prayers quickly.
2. Grammar Forms: Start with nouns and say, "Declension endings, a, ae." Students should then complete the declension endings they know. Do not pause to announce each new declension. Then say, "Model nouns, mensa, mensae." Students recite the model noun declensions: mensa, mensae, mensae…, along with servus and bellum. No translating here, just the Latin. After nouns, begin with verbs. Say, "Conjugations, voco." Students conjugate the 1st conjugation model verb voco to their ability level. Use the cue words in the Teacher Manual to provide the perfect sequence and structure.
3. Grammar/Syntax: Use the grammar sections of previous lessons to review grammar rules. For example: "What is the possessive case? The to/for case? The direct object case? The subject case?" And so on.
4. Form Drills: This is the opportunity for students to practice translating quickly and mentally. Use the exercises from previous lessons to come up with drills. For example, say, "of girls" and the student responds, "puellarum." Or say, "to or for the girls" and the student responds, "puellis." You can also reverse it and give the Latin and ask the English of your students. Form drills are difficult for young students, but you can start working on them slowly. Accuracy and speed are the goals. Ideally students do not have to decline the noun in their heads to get to the form they need.
As students advance, the amount of knowledge they are able to recite grows. You will want to gradually retire (though revisit occasionally) the oldest information and include newer content until the whole body of Latin knowledge is mastered.
Make sure to end each recitation with " Finite ! Optime ! Sedete ." (The end! Excellent! Sit down.)—and revel in a job well done.

Introduction to Classical Philosophy presents the great philosophical questions of Western civilization to students. Memorization, repetition, and recitation are key components of the classical education we offer at Memoria Press. Education is the careful, organized, and systematic presentation of knowledge and skills to students—the direct transfer of knowledge from one generation to the next. And then, hopefully, each generation will add to that fund of knowledge. Direct communication of knowledge from the teacher to the student is genuine learning, because we maintain that knowledge is real and objective and that man can know truth.
But the intellect must be developed. One of the tools we use to accomplish this transfer of knowledge in classical education is memorization. The child must be taught to love what is good and true, otherwise he will gravitate toward that which is less good or even harmful. When we ask students to memorize, we are filling their minds with that which is good and, through poetic language especially, that which is also beautiful.
Memorization provides a groundwork that is vital, but memorization isn't the end goal. It's a tool we use, but it is just one facet of a classical education. Memorization is the foundation that frees students' minds to tackle the intricacies of higher-level thought. Anything a child stores in his or her brain is available for use when the child begins to evaluate beliefs and concepts and later to express his or her own beliefs. But most importantly, memorization forms students' minds as beautiful, meaningful passages of Scripture and poetry are absorbed into them, living in their hearts and minds as gifts that they can call upon in the same way that Churchill called upon Horatius at the Bridge—the epic poem he memorized as a child—as he led his nation to win against the odds in what he called "our finest hour."
At Highlands Latin School, our students have been memorizing Horatius at the Bridge for twenty years. The students who have accepted this challenge now know that they can accomplish difficult tasks. And by internalizing this poem, they know what it means to be a good leader and a loyal citizen to their country. So we decided to offer additional challenges for motivated students who are eager to expand their intellects and increase their intrinsic knowledge. We decided to call these challenges Herculean Labors. Each Labor does connect indirectly to our curriculum, but we also chose Labors that will help students become the humans they are meant to be: Labors that will form them into good citizens (Washington and Jefferson awards), teach them to be good leaders (Churchill Award), train them to recognize beauty in the order of God's Creation (Pythagorean and Mendeleev Awards) as well as beauty in art and poetry (SPQR, Homer, Vergil, Shakespeare, and Vasari Awards), and, ultimately, to recognize truth (Gospel Award).
The accomplishment of each Labor will earn for the student a lapel pin representing that Labor. We are hopeful that many of our students will graduate with their blazer
lapels filled with pins they have earned, but our biggest hope is that we will have filled the minds of our students with knowledge that helps them along in their journey toward becoming fully human.
Goal : Recite all states, capitals, abbreviations, and the year the states were admitted to the Union (in chronological order).
Purpose: Students' knowledge of the order in which each state joined the Union will give them a greater understanding of the formation of their nation. This will provide a timeline and foundation for advanced study of American history in future grades and throughout students' lives.
Goal: Recite 70 selected lines from Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar. These lines are from three soliloquies: two by Brutus that set up the context of the play and the famous funeral oration by Mark Antony.
Purpose: This Labor reinforces the study of Roman history and shows students how history can be enmeshed in art. This initiation into Shakespeare introduces students to the elevated language and unusual linguistics that make Shakespeare one of the greatest writers in the English tradition.
Goal: Skip count multiplication facts 13-20.
Purpose: Fluency in basic arithmetic sets students up for success when they get to higher-level abstract math concepts. The Pythagorean Labor exalts the importance of arithmetic mastery.
Goal : Memorize and recite all 70 stanzas of Horatius at the Bridge .
Purpose: This poem is about courage, love of country, and perseverance against great odds. Students who memorize this epic poem will know they are capable of completing difficult tasks and accomplishing great feats.
Goal : Memorize the periodic table with name, symbol, atomic number, and atomic mass of all elements. (This is a written test.)
Purpose: A deep knowledge of the periodic table, developed through memorization, will help students understand the connections and meaning behind chemistry and the world around us.
Goal : Memorize and recite the first 52 lines of the Iliad in Greek.
Purpose : Homer is the first primary author students read in classical literature. Also, students take at least two years of Greek, so being able to read and recite the
beginning of the Iliad in the language of its author is a culmination of this study.
Goal: Memorize and recite the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew, Chapters 5-7.
Purpose: Learning the Sermon on the Mount will help students to internalize these words of Jesus and encourage them to take ownership of their Christian faith.
Goal: Learn the essential content of the U.S. citizenship test and memorize and recite the Bill of Rights. (The U.S. citizenship test will be a written test, followed by an oral recitation of the Bill of Rights.)
Purpose: American students should have a good understanding of our history and government so they will be good citizens. Memorization of the Bill of Rights will solidify students' knowledge of the rights available to all U.S. citizens.
Goal : Memorize and recite the first 49 lines of the Aeneid in Latin.
Purpose : Students take ten years of Latin in the course of their studies. Memorizing the opening of Vergil's Aeneid in Latin after reading it in English and translating it from Latin solidifies the importance of Latin and the classics in a classical education.
Goal: Read the entire canon of Shakespeare's plays in two years. (Students will turn in their completed schedule of plays to earn this award.)
Purpose: Shakespeare has influenced literature since the sixteenth century and continues to have great influence today. This Labor will appeal to students who have developed a love of Shakespeare, giving them an opportunity to explore this prolific author thoroughly.
Goal: Identify 200 pieces of classical art (paintings, architecture, and sculptures). Students will give the name of the artwork, the artist, the year it was created, and the art period to which it belongs.
Purpose: The capstone classical studies class for students is A Classical History of Art. In that class, they have to learn 80 pieces of art. This Labor requires them to learn another 120 pieces, futhering their exposure to beauty.

Q: In what subjects and grades can I combine my students if I must?
Every family situation is unique, but here are some broad guidelines for how and when to combine subjects, keeping in mind that mastery is still the priority. We are always happy to advise you on your particular situation. Email sales@memoriapress.com or call us at 502-966-9115.
• Math, Phonics, Writing, and Spelling are all subjects that need to stay on grade level.
• The K-2 Enrichment program, which ties a readaloud book each week to a science, history, music, art, and poetry lesson, is an easy place to combine in the primary years.
• Geography can easily be combined.
• Christian Studies can be done as a family together. This is the easiest subject to combine until older students need to read primary sources (Augustine, Eusebius, etc.), which are too difficult for younger students.
• Literature can be combined if students are within a year or so of each other, but students really need to be reading on their grade level.
• Classical Studies can be combined. Ideally, all students will have the opportunity to read Homer, Vergil, and Dante, even if they don't get to anything else. Homer and Vergil can be combined across grade levels, but Dante should be reserved for the last couple of years of high school as a capstone class.
• Latin can be combined, but only if combining doesn't slow down an older Latin student.
• Science can be combined for younger students, since it consists of nature study, but by middle school it is important that students stay on grade level to receive the foundation they need to prepare for upper-level biology, chemistry, and physics.

probably sounds like a silly question— or a disingenuous one—one you would never be allowed to answer with a "no," even if you wanted to.
But I'm not asking whether a book with a heroine can be well-written, multi-faceted and rich, or deeply insightful. The answer to those questions is, obviously, yes. Rather, I'm wondering if a book with a heroine can be "great" in the sense of "universal"—that is, speaking to every single man and woman, illuminating of the human experience as a whole.
Let me explain. Aren't we generally more hesitant to ask boys to read books with female protagonists (Anne of Green Gables, Little Women) than we are to ask girls to read books with male protagonists (Treasure Island, Huckleberry Finn)? If so, isn't this hesitancy based on the assumption that girls will relate to male protagonists more easily than boys will relate to female ones? Isn't the deeper assumption that there is something more universal, less particular about the male experience of the world, or perhaps that the female mind is better able to perceive universality?
Or take this example: Ask a woman why she is reading the Iliad and I can almost guarantee that she will not reply, "In order to better understand men." Such insight might be a byproduct, but it is rarely the intention. Female readers read the Iliad, just like everyone reads the Iliad, in order to better understand humanity. Achilles' experience is not a gender-exclusive one. The longing for honor and immortality through great deeds, the terror of death and being forgotten, is manifested in his story in masculine ways (on the battlefield)—but it is a human terror and longing, not a male one. So with Dante lost and wandering in his dark wood. So with Ishmael and his damp, drizzly, November of a soul.
But can we say the same about books with heroines? Ask a man why he is reading an Austen novel and he probably will not say it is in order to better understand himself
Can a heroine be an Everyman the way a man can?
In Persuasion, the novel in which Austen most explicitly pits the male and female experiences against each other, she may offer some insight into why the female experience at least appears less universal. The novel's heroine, Anne Elliot, broke off her engagement with naval captain Frederick Wentworth eight years before the novel's opening out of an excess of prudence. As the novel draws to a close, their friendship has been partially restored, but Anne is uncertain whether Wentworth will be able to overcome the pride, resentment, and jealousy he feels in order to acknowledge and declare his love for her. In the novel's climactic scene, she and Wentworth's friend,
Captain Harville, embark on a debate as they wait for Wentworth to finish writing a letter nearby. They debate the strength of male and female faithfulness—whether men's or women's love is more lasting. Anne's argument is that because men live more active lives, because they have "exertion … profession, pursuits, business" that "take [them] back into the world" it is only natural—and, in fact, only fair—that men should have the weaker feelings: "You have difficulties, and privations, and dangers enough to struggle with," she tells him. "It would be hard indeed … if a woman's feelings were added to all this." On the other hand, she says, women "live at home, quiet, confined, and [their] feelings prey upon [them]."
Whether or not Anne is fairly characterizing male and female experience, especially in the modern era, it strikes me that she is quite aptly characterizing male and female stories. Where male-driven stories tend to involve journey and adventure, risk and physical danger, female stories— stories with heroines—tend to be somehow confined, enclosing characters and readers inside something. To speak in broad terms, stories with female protagonists tend to have a different sphere of operations: internal, relational, domestic; much more goes on in the house, in conversation, in her head. More often than not, we watch a woman's feelings prey upon her.
Perhaps, then, the problem of a female story's universality has to do not so much with the central female figure as with the sort of world, the sort of narrative, she tends to inhabit. A fight to the death, a descent into hell, a sea voyage in pursuit of a mysterious phantom creature—all have something resonant, rich, pregnant about them that other and different experiences can plug into. Men and women alike can map their own experiences onto the grandeur and enormity of these visions—they have "room" enough inside them. We can each have our "Hector," our "Vergil," our "Great White Whale." But are the narratives in which heroines tend to reside too particular, too interior to invite such association, to embrace such a range of experience? As they open inward, do they simultaneously shut out? If one doesn't happen to have social acuity or emotional sensitivity or an interest in people and relationships, is one necessarily excluded?
The Odyssey is another book about sailors, homecoming, and faithfulness, another book in which a man and woman reunite after a long time apart. Odysseus has spent nine years wandering in the strange places of the earth, facing off against monsters, witches, antagonistic divinities, struggling to get home, while his wife Penelope awaits his return. When in the end Odysseus finally reveals himself to her, they embrace, weeping, and Homer uses a
curious epic simile. It describes a man washing to shore "after Poseidon has smashed [his] strong-built ship on the open water" and he has "escape[d] the gray water landward by swimming." It describes, in other words, the very experience Odysseus has just had. As the simile winds down, we expect it to refer, then, to him—as the shipwrecked man "gladly . . . set[s] foot on the shore," so Odysseus is coming back to "land," finding rest from his suffering in his wife's embrace. But that is not what the simile describes. Rather, we find, it refers to Penelope:
… as the land appears welcome to men who are swimming … so welcome was her husband to her as she looked upon him, and she could not let him go.
Like most of Homer's similes, this one demands that we re-see and re-understand the thing being described in light of this comparison. Penelope, he is declaring, has also been on a terrible journey—despite the fact that she never left home. This journey is one the poem alluded to repeatedly but never dramatized—a journey that happened inside the four walls of her room as she paced the floors, suitors carousing below, son struggling for his manhood, a political situation fraying at the seams and only her fingers holding the threads
together. It was a mental journey through painful memory, fearful anticipation of the future, the crawling anxiety and emptiness of the present, a constant vacillation between hope and despair. Her feelings preyed upon her.
But with this simile Homer declares that Penelope's situation was no mere stagnation. As much as Odysseus' return rescues her from it, she was not passive inside it. That experience was a drama in its own right, worthy of its own narrative, even if Homer is not the one to tell it. Down in the Underworld, Agamemnon declares that there should be a song about Penelope. Her faithfulness, he says, is what deserves the story.
Homer suggests that the journey that occurred in the confined space of a woman's house and mind is every bit as much a hero's journey as her husband's wanderings and battles. But he suggests, further, that it is not merely the female version. If Odysseus' experience can illuminate Penelope's, then hers can illuminate his; her mental and emotional torment, testing, and triumph open up another layer to his experience, one that we might not be aware of otherwise: his fear and doubt, his agonized choices, his pining for home. That night, they both tell each other their stories. Circumspect Penelope wraps her mind around her husband's adventures, thus incorporating them into her own experience; Odysseus, the man of many ways, learns the way of his wife.
Persuasion, too, suggests that the vision of the world the heroine's story opens to us is not in fact gendered—though women may in general find it easier to identify or articulate. Even though Anne and Captain Harville playfully pit male and female experiences against each other in their debate, the conclusion they come to really suggests their profound similarity. During the conversation, Captain Harville is driven to describe the internal turmoil the sailor undergoes as he pines for his wife and children and wonders if he will ever see them again. And Captain Wentworth, eavesdropping, of course, on their conversation, is provoked by Anne's words not just into a declaration of his love but into a defense of his own emotional suffering and faithfulness—as if her words give him the words he has needed: "Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death," he tells her. If her experience has been like his, then his, he insists, has also been like hers—and it is her description of her suffering that enables him to articulate his. He was out in the world and on the ocean; she was trapped in dining rooms and drawing rooms and the four walls of her own mind. But in the end it was their mutual need for each other that drove them, the same faithful love propelling them forward. The experience of the man on the ocean is illuminated and enriched by that of the woman at home—and vice versa. The heroine's story provides a window into another aspect of what it means to be human, enabling us as readers to inhabit more fully our own humanity.

Material Logic is a course in how to think. It covers the branch of logic called "informal logic" that deals with the content of argumentation. It can be used as a follow-up to Traditional Logic or simply as an introduction to the rudiments of classical philosophy for high school students. The program covers the ten ways something can exist, the five ways of saying something about something else, definition, and division.

Traditional Logic I and II cover the branch of logic called "formal logic," which is concerned with the form and structure of reasoning. It focuses on the procedural aspect of reasoning, its mechanics, how we properly get from two premises or assumptions to a conclusion.
