Every great artist knows that the highest aspiration of art is beauty and that the best means to this end is the imitation of beautiful things. Modern art is, of course, plagued with the idea that the goal of art is novelty or "self-expression" or social change or shock value, but even the best of modern artists recognize, at least implicitly, the value of imitation in the approximation of the beautiful. Every artistic rendering of something is an artistic rendering of something. Even an artist as iconoclastic as Picasso, famous for breaking a lot of the rules of traditional painting in his coinvention of Cubism, learned how to paint in the first place by going to the Louvre, setting up his easel, and copying the masters.
Innovation, if it is to be done well, first requires an immersion in and imitation of tradition.
Several years ago The American Enterprise magazine conducted an interview with Allan Greenberg, a classical architect. It was an interesting discussion on how he approached his craft. One of the things he noted was the uninspired nature of much modern architecture, and he contrasted it with the greatness of buildings designed and constructed in former times.
Greenberg explained his experience attending the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa and how he was taught the principles of architecture:
We studied the history of architecture by the comparative method, where you do measured drawings, to scale, of great buildings. So at the end of five and a half years of schooling, you had a vocabulary of 100 buildings which you knew by heart, by dimension. The great buildings of architectural history were mixed into one's architectural brain cells.
Note the central assumption behind this approach: You learn how to build great buildings yourself by first learning and imitating great buildings. This is a principle we need to remember when considering how we approach education.
People new to classical education will often ask why we read so much classic literature, or why we study great paintings or have students listen to great music. The first reason we do this is so that our children will know what good writing is, what good thought is possible, what good art consists of, and what a good song sounds like. The second reason is so that they can learn how to do these things themselves, having built for themselves a vocabulary of great examples.
Too often, we think we can teach children how to do something—read, write, paint, sing—by simply teaching them certain set techniques that they can practice without any concept of what the real purpose is. Sometimes this is necessary, particularly with younger children, but as we go along in the educational process, the great reading, the great writing, and the great art that they have studied all along will have developed within them a picture of what is possible, and then the techniques will be seen as mere means to Good and Beautiful ends.

Asyou well know, there are many arguments today against learning cursive. And while I think the world might be regaining its senses (my home state of Kentucky, for instance, just passed legislation to restore cursive instruction in public schools), training in cursive has been so widely abandoned that many students are coming into adulthood unable to sign their names. Ironically, here, at the height of "progress," we have landed in a place where we can no longer even sign a document! Contrast this with the ubiquity of gorgeous cursive that we routinely see from decades and centuries past. We need look no further than our nation's founding documents or our great-grandparents' Bibles.
For everyday purposes—texting our friends, scribbling out a grocery list, leaving quick messages for a spouse or a child— we really have no need for the elegant hand so common just a generation or two ago. It is true that most communication these days is accomplished by email or text—we do type many of the words we share. It's easy to understand how the short-sighted argument against taking the time to learn cursive gains ground. In this era of technology, we know well that "I'll never use it!" were probably the words that started the rebellion against cursive.
But what if we reframe the argument? Instead of thinking of cursive as a skill, what if we think of it as a fine art? Why is its practicality exalted over its prettiness anyway? Cursive should be categorized with paintbrushes and crayons, not computers and phones. Viewed this way, the case for cursive is clearer. Cursive is an art and, frankly, a very practical one.
Pause for a second and think about how sad it is in the meaningful moment when we cannot convey beautiful thoughts with correspondingly beautiful cursive. It is in that significant moment—when we want to share our hearts with a spouse on an anniversary or a friend who is grieving or a stranger who has done us an unexpected kindness—that our deficiency disappoints. This is when cursive serves us.
This exact situation has recently prompted my husband to commit to improving his cursive. Every year, when we write handwritten notes to our graduates at Highlands Latin School, he becomes frustrated that he "trained away" his cursive in favor of the precise print encouraged during his math and
science education. He sacrificed beauty on the altar of practicality—and he regrets it every May. It might not be every day that we care about cursive, but on the day that it matters, it really matters. That's the day all that frustrating cursive practice serves us well. That's the day when cursive counts.
But let's think for a moment about why the beauty of cursive counts.
The answer is because we have a natural affinity for beauty. Thomas Aquinas teaches us that all beauty is in imitation of the divine goodness of God. Just like we are drawn to glorious natural landscapes, or masterworks of art or music, or shining architectural achievements, elegant script appeals to our souls. Beauty for beauty's sake is good. No other explanation is necessary.
Isn't this why the arts have such a prominent place in a classical curriculum? We hope to develop in our students the natural responses to beauty, which are wonder, gratitude, and affection. We want students to learn to appreciate the musical and artistic gifts of others, but we also want them to exercise their own creativity, to emulate beauty in however small or large a capacity they are able. Isn't it true that from the time children are old enough to pick up a crayon or paintbrush we encourage them to draw, color, and paint? We don't question the "usefulness" of this. We celebrate creativity and we exalt the pursuit of beauty—even when the results aren't yet objectively beautiful. We tape our students' pictures to the refrigerator, no consideration of practicality or "usefulness" whatsoever. The activity makes our children smile. The results make us smile. Pleasure is granted to both the gifter and the gifted.
I have framed most of my children's artwork since they were young, and gradually the walls of our upstairs hall have become filled. When I walk upstairs to deliver a load of laundry or repatriate a lost shoe, my daughter's self-portrait with a giant head, tiny eyes, and wild blonde hair (though she is brunette) makes me smile. I'm struck by the verses my kids selected for their illuminated manuscripts. And I wonder if selecting the features for their medieval shields in third grade has influenced them to strive toward certain ends as they age. The art on my walls doesn't serve a function —but it certainly serves a purpose . And pleasure is an unapologetic part of it.
So, if time spent making pretty pictures is exalted in the classroom, why, then, shouldn't time spent making beautiful words be exalted too?
Classical Christian education is about formation. It's about building good habits. Pursuing good ends habitually is basically what many of the great thinkers from Aristotle to Augustine to Cardinal Newman identified as the purpose of education— orienting our affections and ourselves toward what is True, Good, and Beautiful, and marching steadily toward those ends. We should encourage this pursuit in all things, from what we read to the way we write. Grand efforts and daily disciplines should serve the same values and ends.

I read the first eight of The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion series last year and quickly became utterly obsessed. here is an old story of some ancient traveler from the East visiting the Greek city of Athens. He remarked on the Greeks' penchant for verbal combat. "These people are always arguing with each other." It was true of ancient Greece, but it is also true of modern Western culture: We are always arguing with each other.
If you read and discuss the news, or follow politics, or argue with your friends about theology, you hear a lot of arguments, and all of them sound substantially different. But in reality there are only two basic ways to argue. We could call these two formal ways to argue arguing forward and arguing backward.
Arguing forward is principled in nature. It involves beginning with a broad principle and then inferring a conclusion that is its consequence. You could view this graphically as an upside-down triangle: wide at the top and pointed at the bottom. The broad principle is at the top, in the first premise of the argument, and the smaller, specific statement that is an instance of the broad, general statement is at the bottom.
Abraham Lincoln is a good example of someone who liked to argue forward.
Put in categorical form, on the issue of slavery Lincoln began with the assumption that no human being should be enslaved. That was his broad, general principle. He then employed the specific assertion that black people are human beings, from which it followed that no black person should be enslaved:
No human being should be enslaved
Black people are human beings
Therefore, black people should not be enslaved
This argument begins with a broad, general principle: No human being—not a single solitary one—should be enslaved. (Even though this statement doesn't use the term "all," it applies to all human beings, since to say "no human should be enslaved" is the same thing as saying "all human beings should NOT be enslaved.") This is a general principle, one which Lincoln does not argue for but simply takes for granted, like a postulate in geometry.
In fact, there is a reason Lincoln's argument is similar to the kind used in geometrical proofs. There are three books that Lincoln knew intimately: the King James Bible, the Complete Works of Shakespeare, and Euclid's Elements, the ancient treatise on geometry. In fact, Lincoln carried Euclid's book around in his pocket.
It may sound strange to say that Lincoln's argument against slavery was based on Euclid's geometry, but in a sense that is exactly the case. Not only were his arguments structured like Euclid's, with a major premise, minor premise, and conclusion, but Euclid also talked a lot about the principle of equality, though in a mathematical sense instead of a moral one.
In fact, Lincoln appealed directly to Euclid's principle of geometrical equality in his case against slavery. "Things which equal the same thing also equal one another," says Euclid, a statement that is used throughout Book I of Elements as the major, controlling premise.
To Lincoln, the fact that "all men are created equal" is the basis of the major premise, the first and general assumption, in the case against enslavement. Once that general principle is admitted the rest is, as in Euclid, a simple matter of logical inference. To be in favor of slavery not only violates common sense (all men are equal), it is to be illogical—something no one wants to be.
This kind of argument is called "categorical."
Arguing backward, on the other hand, involves beginning with a particular case and arguing backward from this to some general principle or policy. Advocates of slavery like John C. Calhoun, for example, argued that freeing the enslaved population of the South would cause widespread social instability, "abandoning our country … to become the permanent abode of disorder, anarchy, poverty, misery, and wretchedness"—which would be bad for everyone, white and black, master and slave.
There are obvious flaws in this argument, but what we want to notice here is how different this argument (arguing backward) is from Lincoln's argument (arguing forward). For one thing, Lincoln argues from what he considers a self-evident principle ("no human being should be enslaved"), moving from assumption to conclusion. The pro-slavery argument of men like Calhoun does something different. It argues backward, from conclusion to assumption:
If we free the slaves, it will cause social disruption
We don't want social disruption
Therefore, we should not free the slaves
It points out what Calhoun thinks the practical consequence of freeing the slaves would be, and then argues backward to saying we should not free the slaves. This is called a modus tollens argument (the "mode of denial," since it denies the second part of the first statement), and it is logically valid (although its critics reasonably would point out that it ignores other negative effects, such as the anguish and dehumanization of the enslaved people themselves).
The minor premise attacks the asserted consequence in the major premise about social disruption of antislavery policies and then argues backward to deny
the legitimacy of the thing (the freedom of slaves) that would bring these consequences about. It is consequentialist in its nature.
In considering Lincoln's and Calhoun's arguments, we can pretty easily identify which side is morally right and which side is wrong (regardless of the validity of the arguments), but we must be careful not to associate one "kind" of argument with the Good Guys and the other with the Bad Guys. Just because the pro-slavery side used consequentialist reasoning does not mean that all consequentialist reasoning is bad. And just because the anti-slavery side used categorical reasoning, that does not mean all categorical arguments are necessarily good. There are categorical arguments for conclusions we all believe are bad and consequentialist arguments for conclusions we all believe are good.
We could use a categorical argument for a bad cause:
All people who live in poverty are prone to crime
John lives in poverty
Therefore, John is prone to crime
Here the first premise (the broad principle) is false (and the conclusion therefore questionable), but it is a valid form of reasoning, meaning that the conclusion logically follows from the premises.
Or, we can make a consequentialist argument for a good cause:
If we pass laws against dangerous drugs, then there will be no drug abuse
We have passed laws against dangerous drugs
Therefore, there is no drug abuse
This one is perfectly valid; it's just that the first premise (the consequent) is questionable. Both kinds of argumentation can be used for good or for bad.
Logical reasoning all by itself does not determine whether an argument is a good one or a bad one. All arguments—whether they lead to good conclusions or bad—must not only involve good reasoning; they must also have true premises. An argument is just a process. You have to have a good process, but if you put bad things into that process you will end up with something bad at the end.
It is sort of like a recipe. There are two parts to a recipe: the ingredients (the premises) and the instructions for how you put the ingredients together (the reasoning). If I use the right ingredients (true premises) and put them together the right way (a valid argument), I am assured a true conclusion that logically proceeds from the premises.
All reasoning involves truths and how those truths are put together logically. Arguing forward and arguing backward are the two formal ways we can do this.

The Education Illusion
Entering St. Peter ' s Basilica, the Pietà appears almost immediately on the right, quietly set within a side chapel opposite the Basilica ' s baptismal font. It does not announce itself with theatrical force. Rather, it gathers the surrounding space into silence. The placement itself serves as a catechesis: Before a word is spoken, before a theology is explained, the pilgrim is drawn into a sacramental logic embodied by the Mother of God. Michelangelo's Pietà does not want to be merely art; it is part of the liturgical and theological unfolding of the whole of salvation history in the magnificent execution by the master Michelangelo.
Carved between 1498 and 1499 when the artist was not yet twenty-five years old, the Pietà marked the decisive emergence of a genius fully formed. The sculpture was commissioned by the French Cardinal Jean de Bilhères for his funerary monument, and was chosen from a multitude of sculptures presented in a competition in which de Bilhères picked his favorite. Its refinement astonished contemporaries. So complete was its mastery that many refused to believe that such a work could have been produced by so young a man. The statue was carved from a single block of Carrara marble, which was almost certainly chosen by the artist himself and which signaled his confidence not merely in his technical skill but also in his vision. In an act of youthful vanity, Michelangelo carved his name across the sash on Mary' s chest ("MICHELANGELUS BONAROTUS FLORENTINUS FACIEBAT")—an act he would later regret and never repeat.
It remains the only sculpture he ever signed.
Michelangelo's vision had been shaped early. He was steeped in classical sculpture, formed in the Medici circle, and obsessed from youth with the human body—not merely by its anatomy but by the body as the visible bearer of meaning. As man is the crown of God's Creation, his body is the prime image of divine beauty. For Michelangelo, the body was never neutral matter. It was the locus of incarnation, the place where God becomes man. The Pietà, even in this early stage of Michelangelo's career, demonstrates virtuosity and a mature theology, expressed in masterful form.
One of the most arresting features of the Pietà is the youthfulness of Mary. She appears scarcely older than a girl. This is not a concession to idealized beauty, nor a denial of historical realism, but a deliberate theological statement. Michelangelo lost his mother when he was very young, and it is plausible that his image of motherhood was forever marked by the memory of a young woman, but there is likely a deeper reason that is theological. Michelangelo was profoundly influenced by Franciscan spirituality—being a Third Order Franciscan himself—which long upheld belief in the Immaculate Conception before its formal definition in 1854. In this tradition, sinlessness implies moral purity and freedom from corruption and decay. Aging then, is tied to death and fallenness and, indeed, bodily diminishment. Michelangelo's Mary is thus unmarked by the erosion that sin produces in the flesh, so she remains forever young. Even her body expresses the ideal Creation. In a way, she embodies humanity unexhausted by history and thus eschatologically perfected. She represents humanity already drawn toward its perfected end. Her beauty is not cosmetic but metaphysical. Against modern obsessions with youth as denial of death, Michelangelo presents youth as a sign of restored nature—nature held in obedience to God.
Michelangelo's reinterpretation of the pietà motif deepens this theology. Earlier Romanesque and Gothic pietàs often externalized grief by way of dramatic gestures: tears streaming, mouths open in lament, bodies contorted in anguish. Such images sought to move the viewer through pathos . Michelangelo chooses another way. His Mary does not deny sorrow, but neither does she dramatize it. Her grief is interior, gathered, obedient. She accepts the will of God, not with resignation but with clarity. The Pietà thus becomes the continuation of the Annunciation. The Fiat spoken in Nazareth finds its completion at Golgotha.
conceived as an altarpiece. Christ appears to be about to fall from Mary ' s lap onto the altar itself, to become the sacrificial offering. Birth, death, and Eucharistic presence converge in a single visual theology. Mary gives her Son to the world once more. Mary offers the Child who will become the sacrificial Lamb. Baptism, sacrifice, and Eucharist are silently united in stone, forming a complete catechesis without words.
From a technical standpoint, the Pietà is astonishing. Flesh and fabric are distinguished with uncanny skill. The weight of Christ ' s body is palpable; gravity itself seems carved into marble. Yet the sculpture is not anatomically perfect. Mary ' s body is disproportionately large. Were she to stand, she would appear almost monumental. This distortion is deliberate. Michelangelo has enlarged her body so that it can bear the weight of a grown man. Classical thought distinguishes between mathematical accuracy and formal perfection, and Michelangelo chooses the latter. Technical imperfection serves higher truth here. He sacrifices literal proportion to achieve intelligibility of meaning, but his deliberation remains invisible to the untrained eye. The result is a perfection that persuades without announcing itself, a triumph of form over measurement.
This is most powerfully expressed in Mary ' s hands. They support the body of Christ, yet they are open. She is not clinging; she is releasing. The gesture is unmistakable. Her left hand opens outward, offering rather than possessing. She holds him as a child—and in the same motion gives him back to God. Motherhood here is revealed as repeated consent to loss, a love that fulfills itself precisely by letting go.
Michelangelo ' s characteristic genius for the "moment before " intensifies this meaning. Like his David , frozen just before the stone is cast, his Pietà captures a threshold: Christ ' s body is already beginning to slide from Mary ' s lap, and the next moment is implied but not shown. That next moment, however, is sacramental. The Pietà was
The Pietà thus resists both sentimentality and spectacle. It instructs. It invites the viewer into stillness, into patience, into contemplation. For families, for educators, for those formed by the Great Books tradition, it offers a lesson not only in art but in how to see. It teaches that beauty is not distraction but discipline, not entertainment but formation. To stand before the Pietà is to learn that true greatness lies not in possession but in surrender, not in control but in obedience.
Mary holds—and releases. For those restless for mastery and fearful of loss, Michelangelo' s Pietà remains a quiet, uncompromising school of trust, carved for all time into stone.

Q: Why is it important that I read aloud to my students?
A: One really important reason for reading aloud to students is to give them the opportunity to hear beautiful, fluidly spoken words as a model to imitate in their own reading. We work hard on turning our students into good, fluent readers by focusing on volume, enunciation, expression, etc. We begin reading aloud to students before they can read themselves, and we continue throughout their education as they are learning to read Shakespeare and Dante and the epic stories of the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Aeneid. Reading aloud from works at this level with confidence and skill takes diligence and practice—and years of listening to beautiful examples to imitate.
Think about the typical experience of reading a story with a child. Importantly, it is human and interpersonal. Distractions are removed, a cozy spot is selected, and content is deliberately chosen. There's delight in sharing—not just a story, but a space, a hug, a snack. Reading together means being passengers together on a journey that offers adventures, challenges, laughter. Together, the same characters are encountered, the same scenes are revealed, and the same resolutions land on our hearts.
Audiobooks can also serve some purpose in the homeschooling day, but we need to be careful with how much technology we allow into our classrooms. Physically, technology does not just discourage interaction, it refuses it. The medium dictates everything—the pace, the senses, the story. Even if the parent fully approves of the content, commentary cannot be added that supports or rejects what is happening, sentence by sentence or scene by scene. There is no chance to analyze characters or decisions. Audiobooks can be a great resource for parents, but don't use them to the exclusion of the beautiful readaloud experiences you can have as a family.
So, keep reading aloud to your children! Everyone will benefit.

In1924, German artist Marianne Brandt radically redesigned the lines of the domestic teapot. Forged from nickel-silver, her teapot did not appear in a vacuum but as an element of one of Western culture ' s most thorough re-imaginings of architecture and design: Bauhaus. A term that literally means " building house, " Bauhaus arose in 1919 amidst the ashes of post-war Weimar, Dessau, and Berlin. Within a decade, innovators involved in this movement would recast the form of dozens of daily objects, from the baby cradle to the doorknob, and upend principles that had dictated the construction of buildings for centuries.
Bauhaus aesthetics formed around three goals: one, a striving for holistic designs to integrate craftsmanship, engineering, and the arts; two, a desire to eliminate ornamentation in favor of streamlined, geometrically simple designs (circle, square, triangle); and three, an emphasis on functionality through the motto " Form Follows Function. " These goals were aided by the availability of new building materials such as steel, glass, and concrete, each of which allowed for notable innovations in construction and design.
Though centered in Germany, Bauhaus was an international movement guided by Belgian Henry van de Velde, Germans Walter Gropius and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Swiss Hannes Meyer, and Hungarian László Moholy-Nagy, as well as a multitude of other architects, artists, artisans, and craftsmen working in concert and independently. All of these figures had been born in the Victorian Era (1837-1901)—a period that witnessed large-scale building projects like the palatial structures defining Vienna's new
Ringstrasse and the magnificent buildings lining Budapest's Andrássy Avenue. Such buildings expressed the glories of the past through their massive symmetrical façades in Neoclassical style, their rounded shapes proclaiming the Neo-Romanesque, or their structural filigree expressing the Neo-Gothic.
But the past held few answers for the generation surveying the wreckage of the Great War. And so, Bauhaus creators cast aside the aesthetic of power and luxury that had historically characterized aristocratic life. After all, the ill-conceived actions of this very class had sparked the war that had just devastated Europe. Everything reminiscent of upper-class luxury was scrutinized and challenged. The practices of carpentry were recast to show frames and internal supports as part of the visible design. Cantilevered staircases, described already by Antonio Palladio in the sixteenth century, were accorded dramatic placement in new Bauhaus buildings. Clerestory windows (also not new historically) were re-embraced and became strong identifiers of the Bauhaus style. Primary colors prevailed, often in block-geometric patterns.
Designs overall were minimalist, although employing this term is anachronistic, as it originated in the mid-1960s. Insofar as interiors go, the plush oriental carpets and ornate wallpaper of the Victorians disappeared. Windows lost their heavy drapery and sparkled with the extra illumination from rows of clerestory windows. Artificial lighting, while already moving from gas to electricity, had thus far kept its alabaster globes, crystal chandeliers, and cut-glass sconces, but Bauhaus designers cast these fixtures aside too, inventing
pendant lighting suspended from the ceilings, sometimes configured in patterns reminiscent of canvases by contemporary Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. The modern desk lamp has its origin in Bauhaus, too, including one with an adjustable neck pioneered by Marianne Brandt.
Upholstered, gilded sofas and chairs yielded to streamlined, portable furniture, such as the Wassily Chair (1925), made of canvas and metal and able to fit harmoniously with most office décor today. Many other items familiar today came from Bauhaus designers, including small nesting "accent" tables, created by Josef Albers in 1927, as well as the commonly found lever door handle, invented by Walter Gropius in 1925.
The persecutions of National Socialism forced many Bauhaus innovators to flee Europe in the 1930s. Some figures filled positions at prestigious universities in England. Others came to schools like Harvard or moved to Chicago, where they developed the New Bauhaus School. Despite the scattering of adherents, Bauhaus ideas continued to grow, widely influencing building and design after World War II. In fact, a stroll through any Target, Home Depot, or IKEA store today proves just how deeply Bauhaus ideas are ingrained into modern Western aesthetics.
The story of the Bauhaus movement is likely to fascinate students, particularly those ready to grasp how art forms intertwine with history, geography, politics and war, science and engineering, and changes in societal behavior. Still, even with its significance and richness, does a study of Bauhaus belong in a classical curriculum? If so, can it be a discrete unit, encountered at a variety of ages? Or is it best approached at a middle or high school level after following the textbook pattern through Greek and Roman columns, Medieval Romanesque and Gothic, the tenacious Baroque, Rococo and Classicism, and, finally, movements that flourished in the decades before World War I?
I would argue that a study of Bauhaus is valuable at any age. Arising during a major turning point in Western history, it corresponds with and illuminates parallel upheavals in the sciences, politics, literature, music, and art. Yet, because architecture is grounded in functional utility and presents itself in clear images, students may find the Bauhaus movement to be a useful guide in deciphering those perplexing decades of the first half of the twentieth century. Beyond that, recognizing how Bauhaus still shapes their own contemporary world will bring a sense of delight as well as a reminder that architecture has never been a " dusty art, " but a transformative force throughout the history of mankind.

Architecture is the singular art that affects virtually every person. Even a baby is affected by the dimensions, colors, and designs of every structure entered into. Watch how a toddler's eyes doggedly study spaces like a church with stained-glass windows or a grand hotel lobby. Unable to voice conclusions, a child nonetheless is absorbing architectural style.
Thus, forging an engagement with architecture need not wait until elementary school. It can begin early with the seeding of basic questions whose answers, mundane for adults, sparkle with discovery for a little child:
How many rooms, doors, and windows are in our home?
What is the function of each room?
What are the floors made of? What colors are the walls?
Encourage the use of descriptive terms like hallway, staircase, picture window, carpet, tile—any words that allow the child to describe with detail. Then, help the child draw the floor plan, tidying up the placement of rooms, marking doors and windows, even locating furniture like a refrigerator or sofa. Ask the child simple, fun questions: "Why is the kitchen not the first room we step into in the house?" "Why do we need a hallway?"
Then, move the observational exercises outside. Prompt the child to classify features like the number of stories in the building, the shape of the roofline (flat, pointed), and the presence of shutters, porches, columns, railings, and stairs. Finally, extend the investigation to the neighborhood. Young (and older!) children may be astonished to discover that dwellings in neighborhoods frequently use the same floor plan for each house, simply flipped, reconfigured, and redecorated.
Children trained on such "field observations" will gain real tools for making the subsequent leap into the academic study of historic architecture. In essence, they will have been classically trained, supported by actual personal discoveries, armed with useful questions, and able to increase their mastery over time.

Material Logic is a course in how to think. It covers the branch of logic called "informal logic" that deals with the content of argumentation. It can be used as a follow-up to Traditional Logic or simply as an introduction to the rudiments of classical philosophy for high school students. The program covers the ten ways something can exist, the five ways of saying something about something else, definition, and division.
Traditional Logic I and II cover the branch of logic called "formal logic," which is concerned with the form and structure of reasoning. It focuses on the procedural aspect of reasoning, its mechanics, how we properly get from two premises or assumptions to a conclusion. The program is designed to teach students a practical mastery of the art of argument.
Traditional Logic I presents the four kinds of logical statements, the four ways propositions can be opposed, the three ways in which they can be equivalent, and the seven rules for the validity of syllogisms. In Traditional Logic II students will master the use of the nineteen valid categorical argument forms through the memorization of a medieval mnemonic device, and learn the three kinds of hypothetical arguments. Students will study examples of arguments from history and literature.
