A Consequential Life by Martin Cothran

If

you were offered a pill that allowed you to live forever, would you take it? I have asked that question several times with groups of students, and I find that many of them say "no." This has always shocked me. You get the chance to live forever, and you say "no"? But young people are sometimes wiser than we think. Maybe if they were actually faced with such a choice they would respond differently. It is hard to know. And one wonders whether there would be a different answer if we asked people who were older, people to whom the prospect of death is more immediate. Still, it is surprising. What I don't find surprising is that, after having discussed the question with the class, even more of them say they would not take the pill than when I first asked the question. The major reason for this frequent change of heart is, I think, that during this discussion we talk about the fact that each of our lives constitutes a story. In a story there is a beginning, a middle, and, just as importantly, an end. There are "characters" and there is a "setting" and a "plot." And, if we are living our lives correctly, there will be some purpose to it, what we would call a "theme." And that theme, or purpose, when pursued, often involves difficulties, which, if we were reading our own story, would look a lot like what we would term a "conflict": a thing that gives a story, and our lives, meaning. When we read a story, one in which all of these things are present, we are satisfied in a way that we are not when we read a story that does not have all of these elements. All of us have read stories in which there isn't much of a plot, or at least, not a very convincing one. Or one in which there is very little conflict, or no compelling characters. We tend to not like these stories very much. These elements are necessary to make the story interesting and worth reading—and worth living. For many people today, it seems, it is harder to lead a life with a purpose. We live in a time and in a country in which we now have most of the things we thought we wanted. We in the Western world are the richest, safest, most comfortable people who ever existed. But one of the costs of that is that our lives are at risk of resembling a story less than they once did. All stories have some problem that needs solving, some difficult quest that needs completing, some tension that needs to be resolved. And when they don't have that they are unsatisfying. Most of us are fortunate that our problems today have little to do with finding something to eat or a place to sleep. Rather, we struggle to find something interesting to do. When we have fewer real burdens to bear or dragons to fight, when survival becomes so easy that our chief trouble is just finding something to make it worth getting through the day, we become prone to despondency and depression. Our worst problem is that our problems are not very bad. This is one of the reasons, I think, that we need the old stories. If it is hard sometimes to see what the purpose of our own life is, it helps to experience the lives of other people who knew what they were living for. If we have accompanied Jason and the Argonauts on their search for the Golden Fleece, or gone on the quest for the Holy Grail with Sir Galahad, or traveled with Frodo on his journey to destroy the Ring of Power, we know better how consequential a life can be in the total scheme of things.

Selections from the Vulgate: A Translation Course in Biblical Latin by Alex Long

Student $22.65 | Teacher $22.65

Grades 9+ | Student $21.95 | Teacher $21.95

Lingua Biblica is a supplementary Latin program that uses exercises based on the Vulgate to complement the study of any Latin grammar course. Each lesson includes three levels of study that will fortify a student's knowledge of Latin vocabulary and grammar. Level I includes the easiest sentence translations, Level II includes more advanced sentence translations, and Level III includes the entire translation with advanced exercises.

St. Jerome translated the Bible into "common Latin" from the original languages, striving not only for accuracy but also simplicity. The resulting Latin Vulgate was a version of the Bible that could be read and understood by people of the time, which also makes it excellent translation practice for Latin students today who have completed a study of the Latin grammar. This course contains ninety passages taken from the original translation by St. Jerome, both prose and poetry, from the creation of the world in Genesis to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Each reading is accompanied by vocabulary and grammar notes, as well as parsing and analysis exercises to practice a close grammatical reading of each passage of Scripture.

Memoria Press

Literature

Sequence by Cheryl Lowe

T

he purpose of classical education is to form better human beings. One essential way we learn how to be better human beings is by reading literature. At Memoria Press, we have chosen the best of literature and poetry for our students, the traditional favorites and the classics that we believe every child needs to read. There is a shared heritage that every person needs to be familiar with, a heritage that connects us to each other and to past generations. The reading levels and content increase in difficulty and complexity each year in our literature program. Determining these parameters is somewhat subjective and depends on a number of factors: vocabulary, sentence structure, maturity of themes and content, and the amount of content. In the primary years, the characters in each book are similar in age to the students.

Third grade students are just stepping out of primary school. Their worlds are still small and so the family farm, the neighborhood, and American cultural life are appropriate for this age, but we can begin moving into more sophisticated themes in grammar school. In Farmer Boy we consider the benefits and trials of choosing an agrarian life over the more lucrative life of the town. With Charlotte's Web we explore friendship, death, and growing up. The Moffats depicts the interwoven community of neighborhood life when it still existed early in the twentieth century. This was a simpler time when children could play freely in their neighborhood and walk to school and the local store. But this book also examines the hardship of children growing up without a father and with a mother who is trying to support her family singlehandedly—and with a spirit of cheerfulness and joy. Fourth and fifth graders are securely situated in the grammar school, having left primary school far behind. They are growing up and are more mentally and physically confident. This is an age of sports, clubs, games, and adventures with friends. The books we have chosen take us further afield, from the fantasy worlds of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and The Blue Fairy Book to the Swiss Alps with Heidi, and from there to the United Kingdom with Winnie-the-Pooh and Lassie. But we also return to our American small town with Homer Price, and we introduce allegory through Dangerous Journey, a retelling of Pilgrim's Progress. Sixth graders are starting to look ahead as they finish up their grammar school years. They are more sophisticated and reflective, so we take them not only to another place, but also to another time—the Middle Ages. We start in the High Middle Ages with Adam of the Road, a coming-of-age adventure. We begin contemplating the value of every life, regardless of physical or mental limitations, in The Door in the Wall. We explore legend and its place in literature through the stories of Robin Hood and King Arthur. As students reach the threshold of leaving childhood behind and entering the upper school, we begin preparing them to read Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. Students are ready to enter the advanced world of Greek, Roman, and English classics. To make this a successful transition, the reading selections are carefully chosen. One of the ways we prepare students for reading Homer is to introduce them to the plot and characters of the Iliad and the Odyssey in The Trojan War in seventh grade. Also, in Anne of Green Gables, students see the charming little girl Anne Shirley become a mature young woman who joyfully sacrifices her dream of college to care for Marilla, in an exchange that recognizes Marilla's care of that little orphan girl and pays it back in full. Students in this year are introduced to the masterful prose of J. R. R. Tolkien through The Hobbit, where we move back into the land of adventure and fantasy, and in The Bronze Bow, students encounter a beautiful expression of the Christian faith that masterfully transports them back to the time of Christ. Students at this age are comfortable with modern American prose and unaccustomed to prose and poetry of (502) 966-9115

earlier centuries, but the ability to read works from over five centuries of English literature is a major goal of our literature program. The educated person is not a prisoner of his own time and place but has the broad ability and background to read works from the whole canon of English literature. We begin the last year before high school with the pirate adventure Treasure Island and, to help broaden students' ability to read more difficult prose, Kenneth Grahame's delightful classic The Wind in the Willows. Grahame wrote in the classic English style that has much more demanding vocabulary and sentence structure than American prose. Often thought of as a children's book, the original is actually quite challenging and is an effective tool for raising the reading comprehension and vocabulary level of students. It is a classic book for all ages, pondering genuine friendship and the foolishness of youth. In this transition year we also introduce Shakespeare to students with Julius Caesar, a play based on a story that students are familiar with, easing their entry into the Elizabethan world of the Bard. Shakespeare will become a regular part of the literature selections throughout high school. Each year throughout primary and grammar school, students are also reading poetry selections that connect to their literature. For example, when reading Farmer Boy, third grade students memorize "The Happy Farmer." But beginning in eighth grade, we transition to poetry that is tied to specific time periods. Since America is such a young country, we don't have the centuries of beautiful literature and poetry that the British have, so we treat our students to one year of American poetry and short stories in eighth grade. In ninth through twelfth grades, students study three years of British poetry chronologically alongside their novels. They read six Shakespeare plays and a variety of works, from the medieval verse of Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight to the American novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. They read Jane Austen, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Charles Dickens, and Leo Tolstoy. The culmination of all the poetry and classic novels students read throughout the school years is Dante's The Divine Comedy, which we read in eleventh grade. We put it in this grade instead of twelfth because we know our students are starting to transition away from us in that last year of school and are distracted by thoughts of their future plans. We spend an entire year on Dante, reading this masterpiece in its entirety to give students the whole vision of The Divine Comedy. The decisions we have made about the literature our students read are not random. We put great thought into what we feel gives students the most meaningful experience, leading them in a connected, cohesive way to becoming whole human beings. Our culture today tends to treat children's literature lightly, sometimes not even reading actual books but instead focusing on anthologies filled with excerpts. But we need to be cautious because when all is said and done, we may realize that literature is the most important weapon we have in saving Western civilization. Cheryl Lowe was the founder of Memoria Press and the author of the Latin Forms Series, First Start Reading, and many other books. She also founded Highlands Latin School in Louisville, Kentucky, where all Memoria Press materials are developed and tested.

How to Teach Literature in the Grammar School by Tanya Charlton

Our literature guides in the grammar school follow a typical format:

Pre-Reading:

Reading Notes: Have students take turns reading through these notes that introduce cultural terms or complex words students may not be familiar with. This should only take a couple of minutes. Vocabulary: The purpose of this exercise is to train students to discern the meaning of words they don't know. This is a tool that will benefit students throughout their reading lives.

•

Put the vocabulary words on the board and talk about them. Ask students to read the context sentence in their guides and see if they can figure out a good synonym to replace the word. If they are randomly guessing, go ahead and give them the definition from the Teacher Guide. This is a good time to point out the part of speech too. Take advantage of this opportunity for a mini grammar lesson.

•

Mark the words that are on the quiz or test coming up so that students will be prepared (unless you want them to master all of them).

•

Prepare students to mark their books when they see a vocabulary word while reading. They can be trained to do this without losing the flow of their reading.

Reading Aloud: Reading aloud fluently is a skill that is learned. Students need to read aloud every day. Focus on expression, punctuation pauses, reading audibly, and reading smoothly. As students get older, they still need to be reading aloud. Learning to read Shakespeare or Dante aloud is a challenge, so we continue to work on this throughout a student's education. It is fine to intersperse student reading with teacher reading to avoid student fatigue, to set the example for fluent reading, and to move the story along. Pre-Reading and Post-Reading: Some teachers prefer students to pre-read a chapter before class, but others want to experience the story with students the first time they engage in it. Either way is fine, but we do encourage a second silent reading of each chapter, whether it is before or after class.

Post-Reading:

Comprehension Questions: The comprehension question answers that are in the teacher guides are complete answers for the teacher's benefit, but students should come 14

How to Teach Literature in the Grammar School

up with their own answers to write in their study guides. They don't need to be as thorough or as long as the teacher guide answers, but they should come directly from the student. This part of the lesson transitions through the grammar school in the following way:

•

In third grade, we do all comprehension questions together, with the teacher asking for a student to give an oral answer to the question, then asking a student to put that oral answer into a good sentence. The teacher writes the student-given answer on the board and the class talks about it. Is it a sentence? Is it concise? Does it thoroughly answer the question? Once we have a good sentence on the board, students copy it into their study guides, using correct punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.

•

We begin fourth grade in the same way we ended third grade, but we will quickly begin letting students try a question independently (finding the answer in the book and putting it into their study guides in a complete sentence). Then we ask one or two students for their answers and put one on the board (or have students come up and put them on the board). When we get to the last novel in fourth grade, we use the same method of talking about each question orally, but the teacher only puts key words on the board and students begin writing their own sentences independently.

•

We continue this transition throughout grammar school so that students are learning to complete the questions independently with good concise but thorough sentences. We are still having a conversation and discussion around each question, but the students have been trained to do their written work independently. The teacher will still be checking this written work.

•

In third and fourth grades, students highlight or circle questions that will appear on tests so that they can use their study guides to prepare for tests.

Expressions, Quotations, Questions for Discussion: These activities vary from study guide to study guide. The purpose of them is to influence discussion of more abstract topics, requiring a higher level of thinking. So the discussion should be teacher-led and can be used at the teacher's discretion as far as time and interest permit. Enrichment: The enrichment activities are optional. They are for interest and honors work for motivated students who like an extra challenge. Choose among them as you have time, but they are supplemental. She homeschooled her two sons, has taught in Highlands Latin School classrooms, and is the author of several study guides.

Aesop vs. Grimm: The Difference Between a Fable and a Fairy Tale by G. K. Chesterton

A

esop embodies an epigram not uncommon in human history; his fame is all the more deserved because he never deserved it. The firm foundations of common sense, the shrewd shots at uncommon sense, that characterise all the Fables, belong not to him but to humanity. In the earliest human history whatever is authentic is universal: and whatever is universal is anonymous. In such cases there is always some central man who had first the trouble of collecting them, and afterwards the fame of creating them. He had the fame; and, on the whole, he earned the fame. There must have been something great and human, something of the human future and the human past, in such a man: even if he only used it to rob the past or deceive the future. The story of Arthur may have been really connected with the most fighting Christianity of falling Rome or with the most heathen traditions hidden in the hills of Wales. But the word "Malory" will always mean King Arthur; even though

20

we find older and better origins than the Mabinogion; or write later and worse versions than the Idylls of the King. The nursery fairy tales may have come out of Asia with the Indo-European race; they may have been invented by some fine French lady or gentleman like Perrault: they may possibly even be what they profess to be. But we shall always call the best selection of such tales Grimm's Tales: simply because it is the best collection. The historical Aesop, insofar as he was historical, would seem to have been a Phrygian slave, or at least one not to be specially and symbolically adorned with the Phrygian cap of liberty. He lived, if he did live, about the sixth century before Christ, in the time of that Croesus whose story we love and suspect like everything else in Herodotus. There are also stories of deformity of feature and a ready ribaldry of tongue: stories which explain, though they do not excuse, his having been hurled over a high precipice at Delphi. It is for those who read the Fables to judge whether he was

really thrown over the cliff for being ugly and offensive, or rather for being highly moral and correct. But whatever be fairly due to Aesop, the human tradition called Fables is not due to him. This had gone on long before any sarcastic freedman from Phrygia had or had not been flung off a precipice; this has remained long after. It is to our advantage, indeed, to realise the distinction; because it makes Aesop more obviously effective than any other fabulist. Grimm's Tales, glorious as they are, were collected by two German students. And if we find it hard to be certain of a German student, at least we know more about him than we know about a Phrygian slave. The truth is, of course, that Aesop's Fables are not Aesop's fables, any more than Grimm's Fairy Tales were ever Grimm's fairy tales. But the fable and the fairy tale are things utterly distinct. There are many elements of difference; but the plainest is plain enough. There can be no good fable with human beings in it. There can be no good fairy tale without them. Aesop, or Babrius (or whatever his name was), understood that, for a fable, all the persons must be impersonal. They must be like abstractions in algebra, or like pieces in chess. The lion must always be stronger than the wolf, just as four is always double of two. The fox in a fable must move crooked, as the knight in chess must move crooked. The sheep in a fable must march on, as the pawn in chess must march on. The fable must not allow for the crooked captures of the pawn; it must not allow for what Balzac called "the revolt of a sheep." The fairy tale, on the other hand, absolutely revolves on the pivot of human personality. If no hero were there to fight the dragons, we should not even know that they were dragons. If no adventurer were cast on the undiscovered island—it would remain undiscovered. If the miller's third son does not find the enchanted garden where the seven princesses stand white and frozen—why, then, they will remain white and frozen and enchanted. If there is no personal prince to find the Sleeping Beauty she will simply sleep. Fables repose upon quite the opposite idea; that everything is itself, and will in any case speak for itself. The wolf will be always wolfish; the fox will be always foxy. So in all the fables that are or are not Aesop's all the animal forces drive like inanimate forces, like great rivers or growing trees. It is the limit and the loss of all such things that they cannot be anything but themselves: it is their tragedy that they could not lose their souls. This is the immortal justification of the Fable: that we could not teach the plainest truths so simply without turning men into chessmen. We cannot talk of such simple things without using animals that do not talk at all. Suppose, for a moment, that you turn the wolf into a wolfish baron, or the fox into a foxy diplomatist. You will at once remember that even barons are human, you will be unable to forget that even diplomatists are men. You will always be looking for that accidental good-humour that should go with the brutality of any brutal man; for that allowance for all delicate things, including virtue, that should exist in any good diplomatist. Once put a thing on two legs instead of four and pluck it of feathers and you (502) 966-9115

cannot help asking for a human being, either heroic, as in the fairy tales, or un-heroic, as in the modern novels. But by using animals in this austere and arbitrary style as they are used on the shields of heraldry or the hieroglyphics of the ancients, men have really succeeded in handing down those tremendous truths that are called truisms. If the chivalric lion be red and rampant, it is rigidly red and rampant; if the sacred ibis stands anywhere on one leg, it stands on one leg forever. In this language, like a large animal alphabet, are written some of the first philosophic certainties of men. As the child learns A for Ass or B for Bull or C for Cow, so man has learnt here to connect the simpler and stronger creatures with the simpler and stronger truths. That a flowing stream cannot befoul its own fountain, and that anyone who says it does is a tyrant and a liar; that a mouse is too weak to fight a lion, but too strong for the cords that can hold a lion; that a fox who gets most out of a flat dish may easily get least out of a deep dish; that the crow whom the gods forbid to sing, the gods nevertheless provide with cheese; that when the goat insults from a mountain-top it is not the goat

In the language of fables, like a large animal alphabet, are written some of the first philosophic certainties of men. that insults, but the mountain: all these are deep truths deeply graven on the rocks wherever men have passed. It matters nothing how old they are, or how new; they are the alphabet of humanity, which like so many forms of primitive picture-writing employs any living symbol in preference to man. These ancient and universal tales are all of animals; as the latest discoveries in the oldest pre-historic caverns are all of animals. Man, in his simpler states, always felt that he himself was something too mysterious to be drawn. But the legend he carved under these cruder symbols was everywhere the same; and whether fables began with Aesop or began with Adam, whether they were German and mediaeval as Reynard the Fox, or as French and Renaissance as La Fontaine, the upshot is everywhere essentially the same: that superiority is always insolent, because it is always accidental; that pride goes before a fall; and that there is such a thing as being too clever by half. You will not find any other legend but this written upon the rocks by any hand of man. There is every type and time of fable: but there is only one moral to the fable; because there is only one moral to everything. G. K. Chesterton was an early twentieth-century British journalist, novelist, essayist, and poet, now regarded by many as one of England's greatest writers. His prodigious writings on Christianity, politics, literature, philosophy, and culture earned him the respect of the greatest minds of his age, as well as a wide audience.

Classical Studies Dorothy Mills' Histories Grades 6+ | $48.88 set ea. (text, student, teacher) Text $20.10 ea. | *eBook $14.00 ea. | Student $20.50 ea. Teacher $20.50 ea. (*not available for Renaissance & Reformation) Combine each text with a Memoria Press Student Guide for a yearlong course. Each guide includes facts to know, vocabulary, comprehension questions, mapwork, and timelines, and the Teacher Guides provide thorough answers as well as unit tests.

The Book of the Ancient World Let Dorothy Mills take your student on an adventure to explore the most prominent peoples of Egypt, Persia, Assyria, Israel, and more. Mills covers not only the valuable history and culture of the ancient peoples, but also gives students an understanding of the people and neighbors out of which Christianity sprung.

The Book of the Ancient Greeks

The Book of the Ancient Romans

Travel from the early civilization of Crete to the far-reaching conquests of Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic world that followed. Your student will encounter the stories, ideas, and achievements of the Greeks—their wars and heroes, their art and architecture, and their enduring contributions to politics, philosophy, and literature. Along the way, students will gain a clearer understanding of the people whose thought and culture have profoundly shaped Western civilization.

Like any good Roman course, this one begins with the she-wolf who nurses in infancy the legendary founders of Rome: Romulus and Remus. The rise and fall of a monarchy, the establishment of a republic, and the eventual emergence of imperial rule reveal enduring lessons about human nature, leadership, and law. Students will also encounter the literature, culture, and civic life that enabled Rome not only to conquer, but to rule and civilize the ancient world. Includes notes on the Roman political system and religion.

The Book of the Middle Ages

Renaissance & Reformation Times

From the foundation of monasteries to the bell towers of universities, from the crowning of Charlemagne to the execution of Joan of Arc, Mills guides students through the spread of Christendom and the founding of a new civilization on the remnants of the Roman Empire.

It would be hard to overstate the reverberating effects of this period on modern history. Politics, philosophy, art, theology—virtually no aspect of Western culture was left unchanged by the Renaissance and Reformation. Mills succeeds marvelously in giving readers a neutral ground on which to base their understanding of this time.

The Adventures of Odysseus & The Tale of Troy has all the essentials of Homer's epic: the son, Telemachus, searching for news of his father and learning about the events of the Trojan War; the faithful wife, Penelope, refusing to marry again despite a throng of suitors; and Odysseus himself, struggling against monsters, storms, and the wrath of gods to be reunited with his family and regain his place as king of Ithaka.

The Aeneid for Boys & Girls by Alfred J. Church | Grades 6-8 $11.90 Alfred Church's retelling of Virgil's Aeneid is a great introduction to the story of Aeneas, who escaped from the burning city of Troy and founded Rome, the New Troy. Reading this first will help prepare students to tackle the more difficult writing of Virgil.

Cicero's work On Obligations played a large role in Western Christendom but is daunting to read alone. Let us accompany your high schooler as he learns the principles of justice, wisdom, beneficence, courage, and propriety.

The Republic became the blueprint of the U.S. government almost 2,000 years after it was written. In The Laws, Cicero defends his understanding of the upright moral life. This new, updated edition has added discussion questions and provides substantive teaching notes!

This epic, allegorical poem illustrates Dante's spiritual journey of redemption that takes him through the pit of Hell (the Inferno) to the Beatific Vision of God (the Paradiso).

The Oresteian Trilogy

The Three Theban Plays

Medea & Other Plays

Aeschylus was the first of the three great tragic playwrights. Join Orestes as he seeks to avenge his father's murder, but discovers that mercy and litigation are the better ends of justice.

Here is Sophocles' story of Oedipus, fated to unknowingly kill his father and marry his mother. This is the great myth, influencing all subsequent literature and drama.

Euripides further developed the tragedy, instituting the deus ex machina, a prologue, and greater realism. His heroes are less resolute and more psychological, fraught with internal conflict and moral ambiguity.

Classical Philosophy Introduction to Classical Philosophy by Paul Schaeffer | Grades 11+

NEW

$179.21 set (student, teacher, videos, philosophy texts) Student $21.50 | Teacher $23.75 | Videos $55.00 | A Shorter Summa $18.95 | The Last Days of Socrates $14.00 The Consolation of Philosophy $16.00 | A History of Philosophy Volume 1 $35.95 | The Nature of the Gods $13.95 Introduction to Classical Philosophy presents the great philosophical questions of Western civilization to students. Rather than treating philosophy as a tool for practical ends, this course treats philosophy as the pursuit of wisdom itself—tackling questions of truth, knowledge, causality, and how one ought to live. Students read primarily from original philosophical texts and trace the development of thought from the ancient Greeks through the High Middle Ages. Each lesson in the Student Guide is carefully structured with guidance for marking the readings, defining key terms, and analyzing arguments, followed by discussion questions and occasional essay assignments. The Teacher Manual includes the complete Student Guide inset with surrounding answers, teaching guidelines, and keys for quizzes and tests. The Instructional Videos are uniquely structured to reflect the Socratic nature of philosophy, combining lecture, guided discussion, and reflective follow-up to model philosophical inquiry in action.

Classical Philosophy

27

hy is literature important? And why do we keep asking this question when we don't ask it about other academic subjects? I can't remember ever hearing a speech about why math is important or why science is important. I'm sure someone has given such a speech, but why is it that we tend to think the value of literature is more questionable? I think the fact that we do ask this question about literature is a measure of our academic disrespect for it. I know that, when I am asked this question about the value of books, I feel the same way I would feel if someone asked me "Why do you eat?" or "Why do you breathe?" All I can do is to point dumbly at the stack of books nearby and utter, somewhat inarticulately, "I cannot live without them." Maybe this is why we need to address the question. An answer like that simply won't do. We mean many things when we use the word "literature." We sometimes use it in its most general sense as referring to science, history, medicine, politics, gardening, and the like, but in an educational context we mean something different by it. We mean primarily imaginative or fictional literature: Dostoevsky and Dickens, Sophocles and Shakespeare, Wordsworth and Whitman. Novels and plays and poetry. And secondarily, we mean nonfictional literature: histories and essays and biographies and cookbooks. But I want first to separate out one kind of book for just a moment, to consider a problem I think we have in our teaching of literature. This kind of book is distinguished by its purpose. It is what I will call a "school book," a kind of book that has a special danger. Many of us will remember when we were in high school and there were certain books that populated the syllabus. In my time it was books like Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, or F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby—and last and most certainly least, J. D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye. These books were assigned. They were the books we were supposed to study. They were to be analyzed and dissected and commented upon and written about in papers that we hated to write. They were didactic. No one read them in the real world (or so it seemed to me when I was in school), or in their spare time, or for enjoyment. Who would do that? These books were mostly of a certain kind. They even, I was to find out later, had their own name. They were called "modernist" books. And one of the features of modernist writing is its almost intentional difficulty. They intentionally tried to break from traditional forms. They were experimental; they were individualistic. Each author had a style unique to him (or her). And we were supposed to appreciate that style and admire its uniqueness and marvel at these authors' ability to "express" themselves in a way that marked each one of them off from all the other ones who were trying to express themselves. The authors constituted a veritable herd of individualists, all virtually identical to each other in their quest to be different. Meanwhile, what we students really wanted (502) 966-9115

(whether we realized it then or not) was a good story. And that's why so many of us at the time turned to comic books and pulp fiction of some kind, so we could enjoy a good story with a plot, characters, an interesting setting, and an exciting conflict. I later grew to love many of these modernist books, but in spite of my schooling (and not because of it), and only after I better understood stories in their more conventional form because I had read books that didn't fragment the narrative and engage in stream of consciousness and didn't confuse my young reader-self with multiple perspectives. Carpenters aren't expected to build a building until they know how to use a hammer, and a saw, and a drill; no one expects an accountant to conduct an audit until he has mastered debits and credits; no one expects a computer programmer to design a program until he knows code. In every other endeavor in life, you start with the basic thing and move to the more complex thing. Everywhere except—apparently—in education. So the first thing to consider is that, if we are serious about teaching literature, we must start with good stories. Prepare students by reading: Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows; Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island; Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles; Shakespeare's Julius Caesar; Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird; Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer; Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice; Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre; Charles Dickens' Hard Times (the most straightforward of his novels). And if we're going to do Hemingway and Steinbeck, we should first have our students read The Old Man and the Sea and The Pearl, which are more straightforward narratives. John Senior, who, along with Dennis Quinn and Frank Nelick led the now legendary Integrated Humanities Program at the University of Kansas in the 1970s, wrote a book called The Death of Christian Culture. The book is most famous for the idea that we should accustom ourselves to the good books before we attempt to read the great books: We should master the simpler thing before we attempt the more complex thing. The good books are not constructed, like modernist literature, as puzzles to be solved. They do not dare you to understand them. They take care to present a story straightforwardly and clearly. The first priority of education, from a classical perspective, is to help fashion our students into better human beings. To the Greeks (and later the Christians) there is such a thing as an ideal human being. We might not find him in this world, but we would find him if we pondered the essence of what a human being is (or, being Christians, see Him in the flesh). Man is the one creature who, in addition to being material and living and sentient, also possesses logos. "Know thyself" was the call of the Greek philosopher, but "Be like unto Christ," a similar but more specific imperative, is the call of Christianity. If this is really the purpose of education, then literature clearly should be among our chief priorities. You are Why Story Matters

29

going to run into far fewer equations in your life than you are people. You are going to have to conduct far more friendships than you are experiments. Literature should be a central study in a classical program. Literature was never an optional or subordinate subject in the old classical education. It was always central. Only people who have forgotten what education is for would question this. And one of the things that made literature central is that it was considered to be a moral science. There is something that literature does, that needs to be done, that it does to a greater extent even than the other moral sciences, history and philosophy. In literature, more than any other academic discipline, you can see how to be moral. Our thoughts and actions have meaning. They can be in conformance with reality; they can be good or bad, right or

wrong; and they can be inspiring to other people (or not, if they are bad actions). Literature helps us develop our understanding of morality and it helps us to be more moral. A story is the only context in which things can be right or wrong, and this is because a story is the only context in which anything has moral meaning. What do we mean by saying this? The morality of an action is entirely dependent upon five things. If we think about it, we realize that an action is judged good or bad based on whether the action is done: • to or with the appropriate person • at the appropriate time • in the appropriate place • for the appropriate reason • in the appropriate way

If any of these criteria are not met—even one—then the action is wrong. Only if these demands are all met is it a right action. And the only way to determine the propriety of each of these considerations is to view it in the context of a story. The exact same action can be right in one story and wrong in another. How do we tell? The story will tell us what is "appropriate" and what is not. 30

Why Story Matters

A man may be with his wife, but not with another woman. A judgment may be made after all the facts have been considered, but not before. Certain actions may be done in private that cannot be done in public. We may do things for a good reason that we should not do for a bad one. And there are ways of doing the very same thing that are either right or wrong. Who, when, where, why, and how? The only way to answer these questions is to know what the larger story is. The only way they may be answered is by knowing the narrative in which they are taking place. This goes for fictional stories (imaginative fiction) and nonfictional stories (like history), and it goes for you and me in the stories of our lives. Our lives have a beginning, a middle, and an end. They have a setting and characters and, when we look back, we will see (or we should see) that they had a plot. And in that plot, if we have lived our lives rightly and for a purpose, we should see that there has been a conflict, one between good and evil, and that the good of our lives has defeated the evil in it. Every good story must have a conflict. If yours does not have a conflict, if you are not fighting for something (or against it), if you are not risking something of yourself to bring about some good, if you're not on any kind of quest—it's probably because you didn't fight back when you should have. It could be that you let the dragon get away with it. It is in the conflict primarily that you will see the meaning of your life. At the end of it, if you ask whether your life was well-lived, your answer will have something to do with how you handled that conflict. Did you play the part of the hero or were you the villain in your own story? The moral courage shown by Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, the choice of compassion over strict justice in Les Miserables, the choice of divine over carnal love in The End of the Affair, the overcoming of pride and prejudice in Jane Austen's great novel of that name—all of these show us what virtue is like, and inspire us to act in the same way. It is this perspective that the simple, but virtuous Sam Gamgee voices near the end of the The Two Towers: All the big important plans are not for my sort. Still, I wonder if we shall ever be put into songs or tales. We're in one, of course; but I mean: put into words, you know, told by the fireside, or read out of a great big book with red and black letters, years and years afterwards. And people will say: "Let's hear about Frodo and the Ring!" And they'll say: "Yes, that's one of my favourite stories."

Sam sees the meaning in his unexpectedly adventurous life by casting it in his mind in the form a story. It's a lesson from which we can all benefit. Martin Cothran is editor of The Classical Teacher, author of Traditional Logic Books I & II, Material Logic, Classical Rhetoric, and the forthcoming Civilization by Candlelight: Essays on Literature and the Romance of Reality, and provost of Memoria College.

The Acts of the Apostles tells the exciting story of the travels, the teachings, and—in many cases—the martyrdoms of the apostles as they take the message of Jesus Christ from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth in the years immediately following Christ's life, death, and resurrection. This unit study will acquaint students with Christianity's infant stage.

"There will not be left a stone upon a stone." Our children may know of Christ's prophecy, but do they learn about its fulfillment? Josephus is regarded as the most trustworthy source on the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70.

WHAT Are We READING? During Lent, I started reading For the Glory: Eric Liddell's Journey from Olympic Champion to Modern Martyr by Duncan Hamilton. The first act of Liddell's life was dramatized in the 1981 movie Chariots of Fire. In the 1928 Olympics he refused to compete in his signature event, the 100-meter race, as the heats were held on a Sunday. While the book does cover his running career, it focuses on his post-Olympic life, where he left fame behind to become a missionary, culminating in his death in an internment camp in occupied China during World War II. While at times the author's passion for his subject hinders his writing, I applaud him for telling the ending of Liddell's story that Hollywood did not. GKINHOU I just finished The End of the Affair by Graham Greene, and I highly recommend it. Through a twisted love story, Greene illustrates the moral disquiet of atheism. If there is no God, why not simply follow one's desires wherever they may lead? It is also a beautiful story of how anyone—no matter how far fallen—can come into faith through redeeming grace. I will be thinking about this story for a very long time. KELSEY I'm almost finished with The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim. It's one of my favorite seasonal rereads and is an enlivening paean to the power of beauty. Along with the blooming daffodils, it does wonders for my mood every spring to shake off any lingering winter doldrums. KATIE These contributions are from members of the Memoria Press Forum. I

A T E L R.

DE N U S

T

was going to write an essay about why everyone should read Jane Austen's novels. I was going to make an impassioned case that her books are not just the smart girl's romance novels or guides for men seeking to understand the female mind but truly great books, as insightful in their way into the nature of reality and the human soul as Homer or Dante's poems. But I realized that, in general, the only people persuaded by those arguments (probably the only people who read those arguments) are the people already convinced. Instead, what to say to the person who wouldn't read that essay— to the person who says of a book (Austen or otherwise), "Look, I tried. I just couldn't get into it. Why waste time reading what I know I won't appreciate? I'll pick something else that will actually do me some good." I understand the logic—I've used it many times. We tend to be somewhat utilitarian in our approach to literature. We're interested in what we can "get out" of books— whether information, a moral vision, a jolt of conviction, or simply entertainment, wish-fulfillment, escape. We generally know which we want at any given time, and before we invest in a book we want to know what the book will deliver. If we find, as we read, that a book is not delivering, we discard it. None of the above are bad reasons to read. Reading, as a leisure activity, should to some degree be dictated by our desires. But if we think of our literary lives merely in terms of brief encounters that are either worthwhile or not, that either succeed or not, we miss the fact that neither people nor books really work that way. To truly know a person takes a real investment of time, attention, and even affection. People reveal themselves over time in response to curiosity and love. Good books are no different. I want to make a case that we should think of our relationships with texts as relationships—that we should be in the business of cultivating friendships with books. Since my own most potent experience of literary friendship thus far has been with one of Austen's novels, I'll use it as a touchstone. But the way her novels work on a reader over time teaches us how all great texts work. If we bring to our reading the virtues that we bring to friendship— charity, attention, patience, long-suffering—books reward us the way that human friendships reward us: with more than we expected to "get out" of them, with more than we thought to ask for from them—with unanticipated challenge, surprising understanding, unexpected delight. Mansfield Park was my gateway book to Austen. I read most of it on a plane home for Christmas break in college—a cheap edition I'd picked up somewhere. I can't remember why I suddenly decided to read it. I hadn't managed to get through any of Austen's other novels. I sympathized—painfully so—with the heroine of Mansfield Park, Fanny Price—with her anxiety and social awkwardness; but I also felt all that was compelling in her rival, Mary Crawford, who is so effortlessly charming. So I was surprised, more than surprised, when Fanny Price got her happy ending. I was deeply

touched that Austen would consider this little nobody of a character and her happiness. It felt like the time when I was six years old playing tag with a bunch of kids and this little girl I barely knew slipped her hand into mine and wanted to be my friend. I remember the sudden glow of heart, the feeling of gratitude. You're with me? Many people find Austen's novels very easy to make friends with. They're cheerful, they're witty, and they make you feel intelligent while you read them—like a good friend should. But Mark Twain also spoke for many people when he said of Austen's novels, "[H]er books madden me so that I can't conceal my frenzy … and therefore I have to stop every time I begin. Every time I read Pride and Prejudice I want to dig her up and beat her over the head with her own shin-bone."

What I'm most intrigued by is "every time"—by the fact that apparently Twain kept right on trying to read Pride and Prejudice. Was he a glutton for selfpunishment? Did someone keep forcing him to make yet another attempt? Or did he find something compelling about it even though he detested it? Was this his grudging attempt to be friends? My second or maybe third reading of Mansfield Park was for an Austen class in grad school; I wrote a long, rambling

paper defending the "villain" of the piece, Henry Crawford, convinced Austen had a soft spot for him because I had a soft spot for him. I wanted the book to say things it didn't quite say. I felt the novel's stubbornness, though I wouldn't acknowledge it. After that paper was finished, I didn't read the novel again for a while—it had left a bad taste in my mouth. It's hard to feel a book or friend set their jaw like a bulldog and resist you. Joseph Conrad addresses the following to readers who "demand specifically to be edified, consoled, amused; who demand to be promptly improved, or encouraged, or frightened, or shocked, or charmed" by his stories: My task which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel—it is, before all, to make you see …. If I succeed, you shall find there according to your deserts: encouragement, consolation, fear, charm—all you demand; and, perhaps, also that glimpse of truth for which you have forgotten to ask.

As convicting as these words are, they also give me hope. Eventually, however bad a reader you might be, a book will give you that for which you "forgot to ask." The greatest texts are written to require re-reading— that is, to reward our friendship. With any thing of real depth, be it art or human, misunderstanding and inadequate understanding are part of the process of coming to know the thing. And the affection that develops from giving that thing attention over a long period of time likewise transforms the way we see. To read something with love is to read it with new eyes. You know what moves me deeply about Mansfield Park, even as I write this? The thought of what happens after the novel is over. It's a novel about mothers, I realize more and more, about a terrible lack of mothers, about a girl who longs for a mother but maybe more deeply than that longs to be a mother and has no one to be a mother to. And when, at the end, Austen with typical Austen reticence just touches on a future, just brushes with her little finger a vision of the future in which this character's person and story at last blossom into full life, I feel burning behind my eyes and in my throat. Oh my friend. My friend. When people talked about good books getting better with time, I used to nod and agree without realizing what they meant. I thought you just noticed more things on subsequent readings, or maybe your own life experience contributed to a better understanding. I didn't realize that a book could become a lifelong companion with all that that entails: that it could astonish, disappoint, delight, speak hard words, frustrate, reassure, refuse to talk to you, suddenly speak too much at once, be unpredictable, be steadfast, be a continual, changing object of wonder. Dr. Leta Sundet received her Ph.D. in literature from the University of Dallas. Her dissertation research explored narrative surprise in the work of Jane Austen, Isak Dinesen, and Flannery O'Connor. She is currently an associate professor of English at Hillsdale College and teaches for Memoria College.

The Classical Core Curriculum is a complete classical Christian curriculum that emphasizes the traditional liberal arts of language and mathematics and the cultural heritage of the Christian West as expressed in the great works of history and literature. The curriculum has an early focus on the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic, and a special emphasis on Latin. Latin is the best way to gain an academic vocabulary and to learn the formal system of grammar, and is, along with math, the best early critical thinking skills training. The study of the cultures of Athens and Rome, as well as biblical and Church history, is designed to provide a basis for a proper understanding of European and American history.

Q : Every moment is a struggle in math. What steps can I take to improve our daily math time? A: One of the first things to consider is whether there are underlying gaps in basic arithmetic skills that are contributing to the frustration. Even older students approaching pre-algebra can exhibit academic frustration and simply not be able to verbalize that their foundational skills need reinforcement. So start here: Has your student mastered math facts in the four operations? Mastery means immediacy and accuracy. Flashcards and drill can go a long way to assess and reinforce basic skills (at any stage), and are fantastic tools to warm up the mathematical muscles. We recommend you start each math lesson (even through seventh grade) with several minutes of flashcards and drill, like Memoria Math Challenge. Your student may also struggle with the process of organizing math work. The task of organizing work on a page can be daunting and cause frustration and mistakes. Model organizing a page for your student. Look through the lesson together to anticipate where exercises will go on the page and help construct a visual path through the lesson's content. Then all your student has to do is fill in the path with the equations and work. You'll likely need to do this repeatedly. Your student might need a larger or more defined grid if you've transitioned to graph paper. With students who exhibit learning differences, you may need to make further accommodations. You may decide to do some of the work standing at a whiteboard. You may need to write out the equations for them on their paper. Don't hesitate to meet students where they are. You're not changing content; you're addressing the peripheral needs of the task at hand. Finally, you may just need to slow down for a time, taking the content in smaller chunks so that your child can focus on quality and mastery. This was a great question—keep them coming! Send your questions to carrie@memoriapress.com.

What's

Inside

Traditional

Spelling

"My children finally understand why words are spelled the way they are, and their spelling has improved so much." — Joy, Kansas

Traditional Spelling teaches students to see order within the English language. Rather than relying on memorization alone, students learn to recognize patterns, analyze phonograms, divide syllables, and understand why words are spelled the way they are. Through steady practice, spelling becomes not a guessing game but a skill grounded in logic and mastery. Across all six levels, students encounter increasingly difficult words while constantly reinforcing earlier concepts. The result is confident spelling built through understanding, attention, and repetition.

Spelling

This comprehensive, phonetic approach to teaching spelling is the culmination of our phonics program. Once students have mastered reading "consonant-vowel-consonant" words with short vowels in kindergarten they are ready to begin a spelling program. Traditional Spelling is the perfect next step toward reading fluency and provides students with an extensive mastery-based study of phonics through sixth grade. Lessons feature a variety of phonetic activities that utilize each week's spelling words, including writing and oral dictation practice, crossword puzzles, color-coded phonogram activities, short stories or riddles on the student's reading level, and Greek and Latin root word exercises.

Kindergarten Morning Work is designed to practice quick recall of concepts already taught in the Kindergarten Curriculum. Purchase of this book also includes links to playlists so you can listen to good recordings of each piece.

The nine stages of Classical Composition will not only teach the art of communication, but are designed to produce what Quintilian once called "the good man, speaking well." The structured lessons in the Student Guides help students become confident writers as they thoroughly master the incremental skills of each stage. The Teacher Guides provide sample answers for every exercise as well as scripted Chalk Talk. Optional Instructional Videos are also available if you'd like the support of a master teacher to help guide you and your students through the lessons.

Logic & Rhetoric Traditional Logic I and II cover the branch of logic called "formal logic," which is concerned with the form and structure of reasoning. It focuses on the procedural aspect of reasoning, its mechanics, how we properly get from two premises or assumptions to a conclusion. The program is designed to teach students a practical mastery of the art of argument. Traditional Logic I presents the four kinds of logical statements, the four ways propositions can be opposed, the three ways in which they can be equivalent, and the seven rules for the validity of syllogisms. In Traditional Logic II students will master the use of the nineteen valid categorical argument forms through the memorization of a medieval mnemonic device, and learn the three kinds of hypothetical arguments. Students will study examples of arguments from history and literature.

It can be used as a follow-up to Traditional Logic or simply as an introduction to the rudiments of classical philosophy for high school students. The program covers the ten ways something can exist, the five ways of saying something about something else, definition, and division.

Learn to Reason Traditional Logic I

"My son started slowing down and actually thinking through things instead of parroting whatever he saw online. Logic really changed that for him." — Mark, Idaho

In a culture full of confusion and careless argument, students need to learn how to reason well. Traditional Logic I equips students to do exactly that, teaching them to think clearly, argue carefully, and recognize truth from error. Rooted in the classical tradition, the course trains students to understand how arguments are formed, how conclusions follow from premises, and how sound reasoning works. The complete set includes a Student Text, Workbook, Quizzes & Tests, Teacher Key, and Instructional Videos, providing everything needed for guided study and mastery. As students work through terms, propositions, and syllogisms, they develop habits of attentiveness, precision, and intellectual discipline that strengthen every subject they study— and prepare them to engage the world with wisdom and confidence.
