THE RESTORATION OF REAL EDUCATION

I

was listening to the radio the other day when I heard a story about scientists who were trying to revive the American Chestnut tree. You may never have heard the sad story of the Chestnut, but it is an interesting one.

From Maine to Minnesota, the Chestnut once thrived in America. Not only did it grow into a beautiful, stately tree, growing as tall as 80 feet, but it produced nuts that were both nutritious and delicious.

The tree also had a number of practical uses. In addition to being a great shade tree, its wood was used in cabinetry, furniture, flooring, boat building, and barrel making. In Pennsylvania, the Chestnut comprised 25 to 30 percent of all hardwoods. The Chestnut was also an excellent source of tannin used in the tanning industry, and provided much of the fall sustenance for deer, turkey, and bear.

But something happened to the Chestnut. In the early 1900s, an imported blight struck the tree. Today there are only a few old Chestnuts left, and those grown from new seeds are small and stunted, growing only a few shoots but incapable of bearing nuts. "'Going for Chestnuts' of an October morning on a hillside bright with Autumn foliage," said the great twentieth-century nature writer John Kieran, "is no longer a radiant reality but a fond memory of days that are no more."

You might even find saplings with golden flower plumes or possibly a few burs. If so, gaze upon them fondly. These saplings are the Peter Pans of the tree world. Our joy in them is mixed with sadness. They can never grow up.

But there are still nuts from the few mature trees left, and scientists are using them to try to restore the Chestnut. By cross-breeding and selecting a few of the

most disease-resistant saplings to breed again, these scientists are confident that they can bring back the "spreading Chestnut" Henry Wadsworth Longfellow refers to in his poem "The Village Blacksmith."

But this process takes time. The Chestnut is a slowgrowing tree, and it will take generations to complete the process of restoration.

Education in America has suffered a fate similar to that of the Chestnut. The once mighty system of classical education which used to dominate our educational landscape—which not only produced the fruit of functional, cultural, and moral literacy, but which also yielded practical benefits—is now hard to find.

Thanks to the blight that was brought upon our schools by the progressive education of the twentieth century, you might still find a few places with golden flower plumes of classic history and literature, or a few burs of authentic language arts, but for the most part our schools today grow education in a stunted form or produce only a few shoots off of the old stump of classical education.

But like the scientists now trying to restore the Chestnut, there are those of us working to bring the old system of education back through the continued cultivation of disease-resistant strains of education. More and more families and schools—and even a few public ones—are joining the project to restore the liberal arts and humanities tradition of classical education.

It is a process that will take time, perhaps several generations. But like the scientists trying to restore the Chestnut, we are confident that we will succeed. www.MemoriaPress.com

The Classical Core Curriculum teaches the traditional language and math skills of the liberal arts and familiarizes your student with the culture of the Christian West through the reading of classic history and literature. This Latincentered program is the same classical Christian education that American schools used until about the 1920s.

How to Teach Latin to YOUNG CHILDREN

I

t might be easy as a grammar school teacher to assume that the repetition of "amo, amas, amat ..." is not as important as teaching Caesar or Virgil, but such self-deprecation would be wrong.

Imagine a construction worker thinking that his role in laying the foundation is insignificant simply because no one will really see the foundation, only the rest of the building! In reality, a faulty foundation jeopardizes the entire security of a structure.

Although it is true that the ultimate end of a Latin program involves mastering the language so that translating the classics is possible, this will never be achieved without laying the foundation first. The mastery of vocabulary and grammar forms constitutes the proper foundation.

Since it is imperative that you lay a strong and solid foundation to safeguard your young students’ subsequent success, how can this be effectively carried out in your classroom on a daily basis?

First, be prepared. Perhaps teaching Latin intimidates you. I understand. Six years ago when I first began teaching third grade at Highlands Latin School, I had no background in Latin. I have learned, however, that Latin is not an elite, esoteric subject. Anyone who can learn, can learn a modicum of Latin. Anyone who can teach, can teach Latin. Being thoroughly prepared each day provides the perfect remedy for any hesitation you might have. Mastering each lesson yourself ensures that you remain confident and comfortable in front of your young students. Initially, this requires more work on your part, but it is well worth it.

Second, be organized. Have all of your materials ready for use before class begins, as nothing breaks the classroom momentum among younger students more than when a teacher rummages about for something. Charts on the wall, copies made in advance, flashcards in order—all of these seemingly trivial details actually maintain the smooth flow of your lesson. Organization also allows you to keep your lesson well-paced, distributing your time wisely among the various components of the lesson.

Third, be intentional. Establish a consistent routine. Begin with a Latin greeting and prayer, a recitation of grammar forms, and a review of previously learned sayings and vocabulary. Never fear, your students will not grow bored with this regimen. Young children delight in familiarity; it is adults who grow weary and impatient with it. The veteran tempter Screwtape, in C. S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters, says "The horror of the Same Old Thing is one of the most valuable passions we have produced in the human heart …" He goes on to write to his MemoriaPress.com

apprentice, Wormwood, that children will be entirely content with repetition until "we have taught them better," to demand constant novelty and change.

Along with an established routine, designate time for discussion of derivatives and grammar concepts. Have your students keep a notebook for writing down any new information they learn. Insist on neatness and accuracy in their notebooks. Remember, however, that the main focus is always on vocabulary and grammar form retention. Teach them the value of flashcard practice as a study tool for attaining mastery.

Finally, be passionate. For a classical Christian teacher, passionate teaching is more than mere enthusiasm. It includes an element of reverence. Although passion is the crown of all teaching no matter the subject, Latin deserves an especial esteem. For language sits somewhere at the center of what it means to be human and made in the image of God. So delight in the teaching of this ancient and noble tongue. Let the words take on flesh and meaning as you teach them. If you love Latin, your young students certainly will. Like sponges, they will soak up not only your knowledge and wisdom, but also your wonder and joy.

What a unique privilege it is to introduce young children to their first experience of Latin! Lay the foundation properly—it holds the key to their continued success.

The How and the What of Education

he term "language arts" is a familiar term for anyone involved in education. But although many people have heard it, few can say exactly what it means. Most of the time we settle for a random listing of the things we have been taught are included under the label: reading, writing, spelling, literature, grammar, and composition. But the ancient and medieval thinkers had a better way of thinking about the language arts.

The best way to define anything is to use a skill taught in material logic called "division." Division is an analytic skill that involves identifying the specific parts of some more general thing or concept. The process of "classification" is covered under the study of division, but is the inverse of division: It is a synthetic skill that involves identifying what larger whole a specific part belongs under.

If we divided the concept "cat" (in the sense of domestic cat) we would list all the different breeds of cat that come under that idea (Persian, Siamese, tabby, etc.). But if we instead classified "domestic cat," we would put it under the biological genus felis and it would be listed with all the other kinds of cats under the same category (lion, tiger, bobcat, etc.).

If we apply these procedures to the term "language arts," what do we find?

"Language arts" is a translation of artes sermocinales, which referred to the first three of the liberal arts (the "trivium"), as opposed to the last four of the liberal arts (the "quadrivium"), which were mathematical or quantitative in nature. These were the artes reales or physicae.

The word "art" had a different meaning for the ancients and medievals than it does for us today.

When we hear the word "art" today, we think of a painting or a sculpture. But its older meaning had the sense of a skill or method. An art was an ability to do something which, through cultivation, could be improved to allow us to do it better.

The Liberal Arts The arts of the trivium consisted of grammar, logic, and rhetoric, and were the skills of language that were the first arts to be mastered and the ones preliminary to the rest of the arts and to all other branches of knowledge (called "sciences"). The other four liberal arts (the "quadrivium") were the mathematical arts of arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music. The trivium was the classical language arts program.

The liberal arts, the artes liberales, were related to two other kinds of arts, the first of which were the artes illiberales, the arts learned for merely practical or economic purposes. They would include the manual arts of cooking, sewing, typing, woodworking, machine repair, etc. The second of these were the fine arts, the main traditional ones being painting, sculpture, and architecture, in addition to the performing arts of theater and dance. To these could be added more modern fine arts such as film, photography, and conceptual art.

The Arts vs. the Sciences The arts are distinguished from the sciences in that the arts are the tools of learning and the sciences are the bodies of knowledge that are gained by applying these tools.

The arts are the how. The sciences are the what.

In the Middle Ages, the sciences consisted of medicine, law, and theology.

To these sciences we have added others in the last several hundred years, such as the social and natural sciences. History and literature are also now considered separate sciences in a way they were not in earlier times.

Although the arts, too, constitute a body of knowledge, we still primarily consider them arts because their primary role is to serve as skills. They are the means to the sciences. The sciences on the other hand, even though they employ certain unique skills or methods, are primarily considered sciences rather than arts because their primary final cause or purpose is the discovery and collection of knowledge itself.

The sciences are the ends toward which the arts are the means.

We should add here that in addition to the how and the what, there is the why. In addition to the tools of learning (arts) and bodies of knowledge (sciences), there was the ultimate or "divine" science. For the Greeks, this was metaphysics. Interestingly, Aristotle also called metaphysics "theology." This was how the Christian scholars of the Middle Ages considered theology: as the Queen of the Sciences. It was the Science of Wisdom. It ordered all the other arts and sciences, putting them in their proper places and determining their relations to each other.

The Place of the Language Arts The division into seven distinctive arts (the trivium and the quadrivium) was first formulated by Martianus Capella in the early fifth century in his book On the Marriage of Philology and Mercury. Capella's rendering became widely accepted during the Middle Ages and is still considered a legitimate accounting of the arts by classical educators today, even though many modern educators are either ignorant of them or are under the misapprehension that they are irrelevant.

The listing of subjects we think of as language arts today is not incorrect. The study of literature was often conducted under the label of grammar, and reading, writing, spelling and composition under rhetoric. One of the first things the great Roman teacher of rhetoric discusses in his Institutes was how to teach phonics. But if we want a better way to think about where these skills fit in the structure of learning, the classical view is the way to go.

Conquering Our Fear of Singing

t church they don’t bother to pick up a hymnbook. They don’t even mumble or pretend to sing. Of the people who come to my booth at conferences to talk about music, many claim they can’t sing. Nonsense.

I’m giving it a name: cantiphobia. And I’m here to cure it.

The ability to sing is a gift given to man by God. Humans alone are endowed with the ability to sing, both for the glory of God and our own pleasure.

The Bible is replete with references to singing. The

epics of Western culture were mastered and passed down through song, as were folk tales, poetry, and cultural wisdom. But we here in the U.S. have become disturbingly cantiphobic.

Yes, animals communicate using expressive, intricate sounds. We listen to the meadowlark and the song of the whales. I had a huge Anatolian Shepherd whose morning routine included a long progression of wonderfully resonant "pitches" worthy of an opera singer. But she was not singing. Animals do not contemplate the beauty of their sounds. They do not make music intentionally the way we humans do.

Everyone can sing on some level.

Everybody can sing. I hear you protesting: "Not me!" Your choir director (or sibling) told you that back in the fourth grade, and you apparently still believe it.

Here is a fact: If physiologically you can speak, then you can sing. That does not say how well you sing, or whether you like to sing. But you can inhale and expel air, controlling your lungs, throat, and tongue to produce pitches and, if desired, enunciate words.

Furthermore, that’s precisely what you did profusely in toddlerhood, bursting into fragmentary melodic phrases while you explored a range of possible vocal sounds. You did it joyfully, too, until someone in the adult world told you to stop making that racket.

Singing belongs on your daily agenda.

I want to encourage you to sing—especially to your children. Singing is one of the best ways to help form your children’s nature and enhance their education.

Untold pedagogical riches lie in the vocal legacy we’ve inherited. From folk songs to hymns, patriotic melodies to children’s songs, Broadway to operatic tunes, thousands of stirring melodies with marvelous lyrics are waiting to be heard in your home. Those lyrics are rich in vocabulary, filled with valuable cultural and historical references, and powerfully able to deliver moral principles and inspirational content to children of all ages.

Beyond that, singing motivates people to do things.

There’s a reason why teachers in preschool chant Clean-up, clean-up, it’s now time to clean-up. The effective power of a melody draws children from the corners and engages them in the activity. You know the phrase "The pen is mightier than the sword"? Well, the note is mightier than the word!

Listening to recorded music is not enough. Passive listening cannot equal the emotional power of singing.

Have you experienced the magic that happens when you sing "Camptown Races" or "Climb Every Mountain" with your kids while driving to pick up a pizza? "My kids wouldn’t be caught dead doing that," you say? Well, if they are high schoolers, maybe not, at least until you employ new strategies to bring them into the fold. But children below that age usually are ready to jump into song with just a little encouragement.

Make up your own songs too. It’s easier than you might think. Remember cooing nonsensical songs to your babies? (Come on, dads . . . you did it too.) Maybe the song sounded terrible, or the words made no sense, but it didn’t matter. Baby was glued to your voice because, to children, a parent’s voice is beautiful. as a lifeline to interpret the big world. You might not get past Round One in an audition, but you’ve already won the Golden Prize of your child’s heart.

Here’s a three-step plan.

First, go where no one can hear you. Make pitches come out. Sing "Happy Birthday" if nothing else occurs to you. You might not like what you hear, but this is not a concert. It’s a battle-strategy.

Second, try singing some ordinary words on a single, repeated pitch: la la la la laaah. "Did Aunt Becky call?" Be as expressive as you can. Try adding a melodic flourish at the end. "Will you walk the daaaaawgh?" Think up other possibilities to the same five-syllable pattern. "We must clean the fridge." (Try to decorate the word "fridge" the way you find the words alleluia or gloria in hymns.)

Third, practice putting mundane words to familiar tunes. Take the ubiquitous children’s song "Bingo" or a high-school fight song or "Blessed Assurance"—whatever works for you. If you used "Amazing Grace," for example, you might sing something like: I’ve looked … everywhere … for your green socks, I on … ly can find … the blue.

This is not sacrilegious. Countless hymn tunes derive from historically secular tunes, so we’re just reversing the process as a tool to help you feel more comfortable with vocal improvisation.

THE CONDEM N E Socrates dealt with children differently than with adults

ocrates lived in Athens 2,500 years ago and he died being faithful to what he taught.

Perhaps that is why educators through the ages have looked to him for inspiration and as a model. But his attitude toward teaching has been transformed into a “method” and the ideal technique in the neo-classical movement. But what truly is “Socratic teaching”?

Today, words such as “discussion,” “questioning,” and even “facilitating” are used for what people used to call “Socratic teaching.” But all of these terms suggest a technique. When reading Plato’s Dialogues (practically everything known about Socrates comes through Plato), what shines through isn’t a technique, but rather an attitude: Socrates is seeking the truth. When Socrates has been condemned to death by drinking hemlock because he bothered the citizens of Athens with his questioning and taught his students to do the same, his student Crito tries to convince Socrates to escape jail and the death penalty by fleeing Athens. Socrates responds to him, What we need to think about is whether we’re to do as you say or not; because I am the same person I have always been, one who refuses to listen to anyone or anything, however close to me, except the one argument, whichever it is, that appears best by my reckoning. (Crito, 46b)

Again, in the Euthyphro when he suggests a different word than Euthyphro used to define piety, Euthyphro acquiesces, saying, “Yes—if it gives you more enjoyment to call it that.” Socrates responds quite curtly, “It gives me not the least bit of enjoyment if it isn’t true [emphasis added].” (Euthyphro, 14e) Socrates, though living before Christ, knew that the truth shall set one free. It was the truth he sought, above all else, even above the preservation of his own life. This is the attitude that should govern the actions of every classical educator. Truth was his muse and his guide. Without this fundamental orientation, everything else he does in the Dialogues just becomes a meaningless rhetorical device.

Given the attitude of unwavering search for the truth, examining how Socrates does so can be instructive.

The Dialogues are conversations. The Euthyphro starts with Socrates and Euthyphro running into each other near the portico of the King Archon, as they are both involved in court cases. Their conversation then quickly turns to what piety is and what it means to be pious. Euthyphro promises him the answers to those questions, so Socrates happily says, “Teach me!”

The Crito begins with Socrates waking in his jail cell and finding his friend Crito waiting there to urge Socrates to escape from jail.

These are not classroom situations. Socrates never “taught” in the way teachers do today. He often spoke with only one person and he bragged that he knew nothing and thus was the wisest of all.

It was the truth he sought, above all else, even above the preservation of his own life.

His topics are about how one should live, not factual knowledge. He asks, “What is justice?” He does not ask, “What color is a giraffe?” He also lets the conversation go wherever it will. No lesson plans, no learning objectives, no standards to be reached.

Because of this, he very rarely comes to a conclusion.

The truth that he constantly seeks is elusive. It is much easier to say what something is not than what it is, especially if the mode of discovery is through questioning. It can be said (and should be committed to memory) that the chief end of Socratic discourse is seeking truth through the correction of error.

The way he corrects error is through reductio ad absurdum (reduction to absurdity). This is a logical tool to show the conclusions of an assumption. When those conclusions are shown to be absurd, it is clear that the initial assumption was faulty. When Socrates 1-877-862-1097

reaches the absurdity, he asks the initial question again, seeking a new assumption to reduce to an absurdity. That is why a short conversation (with no conclusion) lasts 27 pages.

A difficulty in imitating Socrates in the classroom is that the example of him dealing with a child is singular: the slave boy in the Meno. In this work, Socrates leads a youth to an understanding of the Pythagorean Theorem purely through questioning. It is of vital importance to examine this interaction since it is the only one in which Socrates’ conversation partner is not an adult.

Socrates and Meno are arguing about virtue: about what it is, whether it can be acquired, and if so, whether it is acquired by teaching or by practice. The discussion eventually turns to how one knows anything. Socrates posits an immortal soul, and that “learning” is purely “recollection” on the part of the student. calls up one of Meno’s young attendants. The type of question Socrates asks shifts drastically. To Meno he had asked questions like, “What, according to you and your friend Gorgias, is the definition of virtue?” and “You affirm virtue to be the power of attaining goods?” With the boy, the conversation begins: Soc: Tell me, boy, do you know that a figure like this is a square?

Boy: I do.

Soc: And you know that a square figure has these four lines equal?

Boy: Certainly.

Soc: And these lines which I have drawn through the middle of the square are also equal?

Boy: Yes. Soc: A square may be of any size?

Boy: Certainly.

Soc: And if one side of the figure be of two feet, and the other side be of two feet, how much will the whole be? Let me explain: if in one direction the space was of two feet, and in the other direction of one foot, the whole would be of two feet taken once?

Boy: Yes.

With adults, the questions are open-ended. With the child, the questions are very specific.

Soc: But since this side is also of two feet, there are twice two feet?

Boy: There are.

Soc: Then the square is of twice two feet?

Boy: Yes. Soc: And how many are twice two feet? Count and tell me.

Boy: Four, Socrates.

With adults, the questions are open-ended. With the child, the questions are very specific. Socrates knows that to lead a child down the path of truth, there has to be a pre-planned route. He had a very specific path he wanted that boy to follow and the boy does not give long answers. In fact, he doesn’t say more than two words at a time.

Socrates also has no time constraints. He has not a care in the world other than the question at hand. This stands in stark contrast to the homeschooler trying to teach her several children while keeping them bathed, 42

fed, and otherwise out of trouble. Or to the classroom teacher who has specific content that must be covered in just a couple hours a week.

Socrates did what was appropriate for the Agora of Athens (or the back porch with friends today), but many things he did are just downright impractical for today’s classrooms. Given that, what should the “Socratic Method” look like in a classroom?

A primary classroom should be conducted differently than a grammar-stage classroom (and logic-stage classes, and rhetoric-stage classes). Younger children need to be led like the boy in the Meno, step by step. Older students will still need that at times, but when more lengthy discussions are possible the teacher can lead the students down the same paths of reductio ad absurdum. The teacher, however, should have a final goal to which he is leading the child.

Questioning is the pre-eminent style of Socratic teaching. Questions can be narrower or more open-ended depending on the subject, the age of the student, and the intent of the teacher. Sometimes an open-ended question is asked and the student does not know the fi rst step in responding. In that case, the parent or teacher should discard that question, take a step back to a more specific question, and once that is answered, ask questions until the student has the tools necessary to answer the original question. Different subjects and different exercises within subjects call for different styles of questions.

Questions in math when reviewing a problem will be more direct: “What is the next step?” “Where did you get that 3?” Whereas in literature, the very question of “What is justice?” may actually come up. Or the more specific question of “Where in the text does Melville compare Captain Ahab to Jonah?” may be more appropriate. All of these questions make students active and force them to make the information their own.

Sometimes lecture is necessary. In the Crito, Socrates gives long discourses to explain his point.

He does the same in the Republic.

All attempts to do “Socratic discussion” in a K-12 setting should be led by the teacher. The goal of a discussion (whether in literature, history, math, science, or another discipline) is to lead the students to a truth.

The students are unlikely to arrive at it on their own.

Imitating Socrates is difficult. And he is the last person to say he should be followed blindly. Ask these questions of yourself before attempting another class discussion: • What is the goal?

• Is this to seek truth through the correction of error?

• What is the age of the audience?

And after the discussion is all planned out, as you walk into that room, examine whether you are willing to drink hemlock like Socrates for the sake of the truth.

Lifelong Burden ‌ or Blessing

This morning my son and I discussed literature. Specifically, we noted a good author's ability to challenge and strengthen the mind and character in ways mere escapist entertainment never can.

Michael wants to protect his mind, because he fears the long-term prognosis of some of his conditions. He does not want to lose the ability to think or to read, as sometimes happens with degenerative disabilities.

I promised him he will be well served to continue reading good books.

Reading good literature will help protect his mind.

I pray for stronger minds for both of my children. As parents of special-needs children understand too well, my children's prognosis is on my mind too. This helps keep me steadfast in teaching them, caring for them, and loving them.

I recently spent several days in the Memoria Press office working on the new special-needs curriculum packages. My children were back home in Missouri. I thought of them often; however, I did not want to call so soon and make them miss me. Even as young adults, my children's special needs often leave them vulnerable.

So I had some quiet time on my hands in the evenings. Unaccustomed to quiet time in the evenings, suddenly I needed a book to read. (I learned that when you find yourself in Kentucky with no book to read, Martin Cothran will reach into the trunk of his car and give you a book or two by Kentucky's own novelist and essayist Wendell Berry.)

That first evening back in my suite, instead of calling home, I entered Wendell Berry's stories. The forced slowing of thought, where reading yields to contemplation, led me to welcome those hours. The characters spoke with such a casual wisdom, they reminded me of gentle insights my 100-year-old grandma shared with me without ever intending to be wise.

In "Pray Without Ceasing," a conversation unfolds in a farm kitchen.

The grandmother describes a horrible day long ago, when she had learned of a tragedy. "Oh," she said, "I felt it go all over me, before I knew it in my mind. I just wanted to crawl away. But I had your mother to think about.

You always have somebody to think about, and it's a blessing."1 As long as our children live, especially our children with special needs, we will always have somebody to think about. And it's a blessing.

FSR is a balanced, age-appropriate approach to phonics and reading, with a serious focus on correct pencil grip and letter formation. he art of teaching and studying literature is in one sense very simple, and yet, in another sense, complex. We might ask, is “God in the detail” or is the “Devil in the detail”? To answer such a question, it helps to remember that the idiom “God is in the detail” appeared first and holds precedence. And so it is with the study of literature: Much can be said for the importance of detail and nuance. After all, the best poems, short stories, novels, and plays achieve such status because they are filled with crafted diction (word choice), artful syntax (the arrangement of words to form sentences), detailed and memorable characters, settings, themes, and a meaningful Central One Idea (the salient idea at the heart of the work). Therefore, it is best to conduct a close reading of a text that includes an attentive study of the myriad elements and details that coalesce to convey meaning.

In order to do this, however, it is useful to have a resource to help you do it in an organized way.

This is the idea, for example, behind Memoria Press' literature guides: to give the teacher the tools to do this more easily.

Here are four reasons why this kind of resource is valuable:

1. STRUCTURE & DISCIPLINE

A Literature Guide gives structure to the ostensibly unstructured content of literature. All good classes—perhaps especially literature—need a basic or foundational curriculum that presents the facts, details, and ideas of the subject—and which calls for student interaction with this content. A classic work of literature is usually a multi-layered work of complexity, nuance, literary and rhetorical elements, a myriad of characters and themes, and a highly advanced or creative vocabulary, syntax, and style.

A Guide can help order and shape the class, helping the teacher proceed through the text in proper stages, providing what to teach, when to teach it, and even how to teach it.

Save the “reading and discussion only” approach for the Oxford seminar room or the Great Books college. Let us remember that upper school precedes college. We should give our students the mental and practical tools they will need so that when they land in the college seminar, they can draw upon these tools at will to enrich their discussion and bolster their success.

If a teacher wishes to use class time for lecture and discussion only, then the Literature Guide can be used for challenging, substantive work to be completed at home. And a great benefit for the teacher is that all homework assignments are prepared and ready for student use.

Guided note-taking should happen through interaction with and in response to three key components: the classic work (e.g., To Kill a Mockingbird), high-quality curriculum (e.g., the Literature Guide), and excellent teaching (lecture and discussion). Students should take notes on all three components.

2. PURPOSE

The Literature Guide is written in a manner that serves the classic work, and serves the lecture and class discussion. There is no competition between the Guide and the text or the Guide and the teacher.

A good resource insists on preserving an important hierarchy: The classic work resides at the top, a level below is the lecture and class discussion, and below that, the Literature Guide. The Guide’s purpose is to 1-877-862-1097

illuminate the art, beauty, and essence of the classic work, to enhance the lecture and class discussion, and to develop student thinking and writing.

The best classes feature the dual combination of excellent teaching and excellent curriculum. The best classes almost always incorporate the use of physical curriculum such as textbooks, outlines, handouts, etc., used in conjunction with engaging, dynamic teaching.

3. DETAILS

A Literature Guide helps the teacher by including a profusion of important facts and concepts about the classic work, its context, and the author (Basic Features & Background, Reading Notes, Vocabulary, etc.) that ease the burden of research for the instructor. Attractive Penmanship Starts with a Solid Cursive Foundation Where did your love for penmanship come from?

My love for penmanship began at an early age. My mother always had beautiful handwriting, and I remember getting notes in my lunchbox in her cursive hand. I loved it.

Once I began identifying myself as an artist (still at a young age) I was convicted that if I was going to create beautiful things, my handwriting must be a thing of beauty as well. I’ve worked on it ever since.

What does it require to become a "Master Penman"?

It took me five years to become a Master Penman, which was unheard of until that time. It usually requires significantly more years of dedicated practice and perfecting. But I count the several years through my childhood and even into my college years as part of my foundation. I’m almost entirely self-taught. As part of the final stages of my training and practice, I was mentored by the calligrapher of the White House at the time. I worked remotely from my studio in Denver and sent in my work to him to be reviewed, and later, I would send it to the ten pre-existing Masters to be critiqued. It was intimidating, to say the least.

What do you feel when you are creating with a pen?

Are you always trying to improve your handwriting?

You are obviously an exceptional artist and extend your penmanship to the level of art. How can people without your level of skill or natural talent become good penmen?

Each time I have a pen in hand, I approach it with the utmost care and intentionality. It’s important to stay humble and focus on the task at hand. I practice often and stay diligent to do so. I still have a lot to learn.

The major components of attractive cursive are the "Three 'S's of Penmanship": consistent size, spacing, and slant. Taken as a whole, regular writing is pleasing to the eye.

Then, as with any skill, practice, practice, practice. Practice the alphabet until you master each letter; practice drawing basic shapes and lines with consistency. Enjoy the pleasure of writing and take every opportunity to write things by hand—it will improve the beauty of your writing.

As a student did you always have lovely writing?

Did your teachers insist on beautiful penmanship?

Because I had worked on my handwriting from a young age, by the time I was a college student, my handwriting had become partially how I was identified among peers and professors. I had one professor who kept a handwritten essay I had done and hung it on the wall of his office. I was usually the last one to fi nish these kinds of essays because I was so meticulous about my penmanship. I had peers compliment me and even had a classmate ask me to write her wedding invitation. That was the first time I was commissioned for my penmanship. I knew I wanted to make the invitations look even more beautiful than I could do in my regular hand, so I researched handwriting as an art form and came upon calligraphy and the organization IAMPETH, from which I would later receive my Master Penman certification. The first time I saw a video of Master Penman John DeCollibus (who is now a very close and respected friend) writing in calligraphy, it was like ballet on paper. I was in love. I knew then that I wanted to pursue the art of calligraphy.

Why is the pen an important part of human history?

The pen acts as a baton mankind has passed from one generation to the next, recording history and building upon it. It acts as the Richter scale of our hearts, capturing our emotions and thoughts. The pen is critical to keeping us in touch not only with ourselves, but also with others in an intimate and tangible way.

Cursive Penmanship

Why is penmanship important to a modern student?

What has happened to it in our time? What benefits come from teaching children to write in cursive?

In a world that prioritizes typing skills, it is important that modern students do not lose their penmanship skills.

Penmanship has certainly taken a backseat in today’s educational system (at least 41 states do not require public schools to teach cursive handwriting), and unless parents take the time to teach their children, they won’t learn it. It’s a scary thought that our young people would not be able to read our country’s historical documents.

It’s important for everyone to be diligent in practicing his or her handwriting, not just as students. If you’ve listened to my TEDx Talk on "The Importance of Penmanship in the 21st Century," I discuss the psychological research that proves how integral handwriting is to memory retention and cognitive function, especially for young students just learning to read.

With that being said, young or old, it’s never too late to practice.

Most people think that because I’m an advocate for penmanship that I’m "old school" and that I believe technology is evil. I laugh at the idea. Handwriting and technology shouldn’t be put in opposing corners. In fact, much of the research that shows us the benefits of handwriting is supported by great feats of technology. Because we live in a techsavvy world, I believe that children should learn typing skills, but not at the expense of handwriting.

History of the Early Church

Continue on from a historical study of the Hebrew people to an investigation of the history of the church. This was so evidently necessary to Christians of the 4th century, that one of their own, Eusebius, the bishop of Caesarea, wrote the first book to recount the struggles and victories of the first followers of Christ.
