WHAT IS THE DEGREE PROGRAM? DOCTOR OF PHARMACY (Pharm.D.): This five-year undergraduate program is designed for highly motivated students who seek a career as a pharmacist. The program will deliver medication therapy experts who are prepared to embrace the full and expanding scope of pharmacy practice.

HOW DO I BECOME A PHARMACY STUDENT? Entry into the School of Pharmacy directly from high school is not possible. Students are required to successfully complete 10 specific prerequisite courses at the university level prior to being eligible for admission to the program: • Biology 1001 and 1002 • Chemistry 1050 and 1051 (St. John’s Campus) or Chemistry 1200 and 1001 (Grenfell Campus) • Six credit hours in English; an English Critical Reading and Writing course is recommended • Mathematics 1000 and 1001 • Physics 1020 or 1050 • Physics 1021 or 1051 To be considered for admission, students must have a minimum academic score of 70%. The academic score calculation is based on the prerequisite course average and the cumulative average.

Academic scores are ranked from highest to lowest and select applicants are invited to a behavioural style interview. After the interview, admissions scores are calculated based on both interview performance and academic score.

The Admissions Committee selects applicants who exhibit strong academic capabilities, demonstrate the qualities and attributes necessary to be an effective pharmacist, and display a commitment to a career in pharmacy.

The School of Pharmacy admits 40 students each September.

The program is competitive for a limited number of seats and priority is given to applicants who are residents of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) as defined by the School of Pharmacy for the purposes of admission. One seat is reserved for an eligible applicant of Aboriginal descent from Newfoundland and Labrador.

Students must submit a School of Pharmacy application by Feb. 1.

HOW WILL STUDENTS BECOME PREPARED TO PRACTICE? The program provides a number of pharmacy practice experiences both simulated and real. Students will gain knowledge and skills by learning from practicing pharmacists and other healthcare professionals. The final year of the program consists of 30 weeks of advanced pharmacy practice experiences.

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE AFTER GRADUATION? Pharmacy graduates are everywhere, including: • Community pharmacies • Hospitals • Pharmaceutical companies • Pharmacy and health-related organizations • Government • Educational environments

WHAT ATTRIBUTES ARE EXPECTED FROM PHARMACY STUDENTS?

As a pharmacist, you can: • Act as a mentor to pharmacy students • Administer injections • Apply professional knowledge and experience to practice • Collaborate with other health professionals • Compound specialty pharmaceuticals • Counsel patients on proper use of medications • Prescribe for minor ailments • Expand/renew prescriptions and make substitutions • Manage pharmacy practice • Monitor patients for proper use of medication • Offer emergency refills • Provide community in-service and clinic days

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT MEMORIAL’S PHARMACY PROGRAM? The School is located in the Health Sciences Centre together with a medical school, nursing school, general hospital, cancer treatment centre, and child health and rehabilitation centre. This setting is unique among pharmacy programs in Canada.

The School of Pharmacy prides itself on small class sizes, stateof-the-art classroom instruction, and a network of practicing pharmacists who offer invaluable experiential learning opportunities. Many of the connections students make during their years in pharmacy school are maintained and enhanced throughout their careers.
