WHAT IS THE DEGREE PROGRAM? The bachelor of nursing (BN) (collaborative) program is designed to prepare entry-level nurses who will function within a variety of health care settings. The graduate is prepared to assume the roles of direct caregiver, educator, counselor, advocate, facilitator, coordinator of care, researcher, leader and member of the nursing profession.

BN PROGRAM OPTIONS FOUR-YEAR OPTION For applicants who have a high school diploma and/or have attended a post-secondary institution.

Western Regional School of Nursing (Corner Brook) Application Deadline: March 1 Intake: Fall semester Admission Requirements: Students applying directly from high school are required to have completed the following courses or their equivalents: Biology 2201, Biology 3201, and Chemistry 3202.

Students who have attended a post-secondary institution without taking the high school courses noted above must complete the following courses or their equivalents: Biology 1001, Biology 1002, and either Chemistry 1010 (St. John’s Campus) or Chemistry 1810 (Grenfell Campus).

Both biology courses must be taken at the same level (either high school or post-secondary), not a combination of the two.

FAST-TRACK OPTION For applicants who have an undergraduate degree or advanced standing.

Western Regional School of Nursing (Corner Brook) Application Deadline: March 1 Intake: Fall semester Admission Requirements: Students who have completed a fouryear bachelor’s degree must have a minimum degree GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, as well as the following courses completed: • Statistics 2500, or equivalent • Biochemistry 1430, or equivalent • Biology 3053, or equivalent

LPN BRIDGING OPTION For applicants with a Newfoundland and Labrador Licensed Practical Nurse diploma completed in 2002 or later who hold a practicing license.

Location: Centre for Nursing Studies (St. John’s) Application Deadline: February 1 Intake: Spring semester Admission Requirements: In addition to the qualifications noted above, applicants must have completed the following high school courses (or their equivalents): Biology 2201, Biology 3201, and Chemistry 3202.

Students who are conditionally accepted to the LPN Bridging Option must successfully complete a bridging semester during the Spring semester. Successful students will then bridge into Year 2 of the BN program at the Centre for Nursing Studies.

HOW DO I BECOME A NURSING STUDENT? Admission into the program is competitive due to a limited number of placements. Priority for admission is given to residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. Admission is subject to the applicant meeting the general admission requirements for Memorial University. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee a student’s acceptance into the program.

Up to three positions per year are available in the BN fouryear option for applicants of Aboriginal ancestry who have met the admission requirements. Applicants must provide current documentation of Aboriginal ancestry at the time of application.

Current undergraduate students can be considered for admission with advanced standing. To be considered, students should have completed the courses listed above and all of the non-nursing courses required for the BN degree, with a GPA of 3.0. FAST FACTS • Three nursing schools in Newfoundland and Labrador work together to offer the BN program. Two schools are located in St. John’s: the Memorial University School of Nursing and Centre for Nursing Studies. The Western Regional School of Nursing is located in Corner Brook.

• Over 290 nursing students are admitted to the BN program every year.

• The BN program offers a number of nursing practice experiences, including both simulated and real experiences.

• By the time they graduate, students will have obtained over 1,600 hours of clinical experience.
