WHY WE RUN On behalf of the families of those killed, survivors, first responders, our Board of Trustees, our staff and more than 3,000 volunteers, we are honored and excited to welcome you to Oklahoma City for the 22nd Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon.

We at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum take great pride in organizing this important weekend and we are so excited to return to our usual last weekend in April.

The Run to Remember is more than just a race. It’s an opportunity to reflect. It’s a chance to remember those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever. April 19, 1995, devastated this city – but it did not defeat us. We rose up together in defiance against the senseless act of violence.

Not just as a city or state, but as a nation. You will see the fruits of that labor all across our great city this weekend.

We hope you will take the time to visit the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum during Race Weekend – runners receive free entry with their race bib. As you walk along the Outdoor Symbolic Memorial, you will notice the many trees surrounding the Survivor Tree. These trees represent the first responders on that dreadful day. Those closest to the Survivor Tree represent our own community – local firefighters, law enforcement, nurses and doctors, and many civilians who rushed in to help. The others represent the many who traveled to Oklahoma City to lend a helping hand.

Much like the Memorial’s Rescuers’ Orchard, the Memorial Marathon features both local runners and thousands who have traveled to be here. Our Marathon attracts runners from nearly every state and several countries. We are so thankful for our national and international support.

As we continue to come out of this international pandemic, we are most excited that YOU came and chose to run! We have learned so much over the past two years and so much of it is about perseverance, inclusion and bringing people together to work out issues that we face.

Thank you to the cities of Oklahoma City, The Village and Nichols Hills that make up our 26.2-mile course, the many businesses and community members who help us make Race Weekend a reality.

The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum is the sole beneficiary of Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon event proceeds. The Memorial and Museum receive no annual funding from any local, state or federal government, so this event — the Memorial’s largest fundraiser — is critical for the mission to continue.

It is our hope that when you put on your race shirt that reads Run to Remember,, you will reflect on the world and our struggles and realize they are similar to training for and running a Marathon. It is not just about running, but the journey and putting in the hard work. We hope you will join us in our quest at the Memorial Museum to find Common Ground on this Sacred Ground.

A Bigger, Better, Three-Day Finish Line Festival!

The Memorial Marathon Finish Line Festival, presented by Continental Resources, consists of three days of live music, activities and celebration.

FRIDAY, APRIL 22 To kick off Race Weekend and the Finish Line Festival, we’re saying thank you to our race participants, supporters and the community with a FREE concert in Scissortail Park. The Josh Abbott Band takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. following an opening performance by Jason Scott and The High Heat at 6:00 p.m. This special concert is produced by Graham Colton and Brian Bogert. Be sure and stick around after the show for a spectacular fireworks show in the park!

The fun’s just getting started! Throughout the day on Saturday, there will be activities throughout Scissortail Park including disc golf, yoga, the Sky Rink and more. After the 5K and Kids Marathon, be sure and stop by for live entertainment from SquadLive.

Why We Run Weekend Series

We are excited to offer the Weekend Series Challenge to our runners for a second year! The Why We Run Weekend Series, presented

by Inasmuch Foundation, gives runners the opportunity to run the 5K on Saturday, April 23, and then the Half Marathon or Full Marathon on Sunday, April 24.

The Oklahoma Standard Challenge returns for another year!

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon and the Williams Route 66 Marathon in Tulsa have teamed up to show the unity between the people in our great state. Run the Marathon or Half Marathon in both races during the same calendar year and you’ll receive a special commemorative Oklahoma Standard medal at the Williams Route 66 Marathon Finish Line!

Each year, the medal highlights one of the three tenets of the Oklahoma Standard – Service, Honor, and Kindness.

I Run To Honor The tragedy of April 19, 1995, wasn’t limited to the residents of Oklahoma City.

Rainey Sewell grew up in Norman, Oklahoma, just down the road from Oklahoma City and remembers the bombing and lasting impact. Now living in Washington D.C., Rainey travels home every year to participate in the Memorial Marathon. Her inspiration for running is personal. Rainey runs in honor of Ted L. Allen, who was killed in the bombing.

“I’ve been blessed to know the entire Allen family my whole life because Austin Allen, Ted’s son, and I grew up together. I love being able to run to remember my friend’s dad,” says Rainey.

“The Allens are always very appreciative to anyone running in honor of Ted and it makes those last few miles worth it to be able to bring a little bit of joy out of a tragic situation.”

“To watch Rainey running in my dad’s name means the world to my family. It’s an annual reminder of how selfless and caring Oklahomans are,” says Austin.

“But most importantly, it’s a reminder that good will always triumph over evil. Thank you, Rainey.”

For every race, all 22 years, Oklahoma’s News 4 has been the exclusive television broadcast home of the Marathon. The employees at KFOR-TV have a deeply personal commitment to this project. Many of the journalists who work at KFOR today were working at Channel 4 in April of 1995. From that time forward, KFOR has documented the resilience that has come to define Oklahoma City and the people of our state.

Each year, anchors Kevin Ogle and Linda Cavanaugh head up the Marathon broadcast along with race analyst Mark Bravo. They lead a massive team from News 4, which has crews providing live coverage along the 26.2-mile course. KFOR’s pilot-reporter, Mason Dunn, gives viewers real-time analysis from Chopper 4 with a view from the sky that’s unmatched on race day. “The months of preparation and massive team effort on the day of the marathon is a challenge, but we are honored to be a part of this event,” said Ogle. “This is one of the most important stories we cover each year, because of what it means to our community.”

Whether you’re a runner, spectator, or volunteer – trust yourself.

If you See Something, Say Something. Follow the steps below to report any suspicious behavior: 1. Do not hesitate. Call 9-1-1 first, making sure you speak calmly while describing the details in full.

2. Notify a law enforcement officer or race official – they are stationed all along the course – after calling 9-1-1.

No bags are allowed on the Race Course. All items must be checked via the clear Gear Check bags provided to participants at race packet pick up at the Health & Fitness Expo. Gear Check will be located on the northwest corner of the Oklahoma City Convention Center and can be accessed via Robinson Avenue and Mick Cornett Drive.

Be sure to never leave a bag unattended as it could result in the closing of the race or a certain portion of the course. Please do your part and help us ensure the safety of runners, spectators and volunteers by taking responsibility for your belongings.

Please report any unattended bags to a law enforcement officer or race official.

There will also be several fun and engaging photo opportunities to commemorate this special event. The 2-day Health & Fitness Expo is FREE and open to the public.

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon is honored to have the privilege of partnering with Cleats for Kids (C4K), whose mission is to equip and empower kids through sports by providing sports shoes, gear, and apparel in all sizes, for kids in need. Before you make your way to the OKC Convention Center or Scissortail Park, grab your new or gently used running shoes and bring them with you. NEW IN OKC Seed Reef at Factory Obscura

Never Forget at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum This is what the Run to Remember is all about. If you’ve never made it inside the Oklahoma City National Memorial Museum, or it’s been a while since your last visit, it’s a must-see. Walk “underwater” among the immersive, sculpted paper installation of a coral reef, created by artists Emma Difani and Malcolm Zachariah, at Factory Obscura. Participants are welcome to restore Seed Reef by constructing and adding their own corals and other reef animals to the installation.

First Americans Museum The newly opened First Americans Museum shares cultural diversity, history, art and contributions of the First Americans. Visitors can experience the collective histories of Oklahoma’s 39 distinctive First American Nations through immersive family-friendly activities, a full-service restaurant featuring unique Native inspired cuisine, a museum store highlighting authentic handmade items by premier First American artists and an outdoor cultural park where the plains, prairies and wetland converge.

Oklahoma City Zoo View animals from every corner of the world at the Oklahoma City Zoo. Located in the Adventure District, the zoo is home to over 1,900 animals. Along with the typical exhibits you’d expect at the zoo, there is also a special area called the Oklahoma Trails Adventure, dedicated to the state’s natural beauty. This area is home to 100 different species of animals native to Oklahoma and features 11 distinct habitats unique to the state.

RIVERSPORT Adventure Set on the Oklahoma River near downtown and Bricktown is the Boathouse District.

It’s home to RIVERSPORT Adventure, where you can canoe, kayak, stand-up paddleboard or whitewater raft. They even have an outdoor surfing simulator! Indoor activities include an alpine ski simulator and rock climbing. The Boathouse District is also a U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Site for rowing and kayaking, so you can often spot athletes on the water.

Scissortail Park The Finish Line Festival will be held at Scissortail Park beginning with a concert Friday, April 22 until Sunday, April 24.

There will be an abundance of food and drink options for refueling after the big run.

The official Memorial Marathon backdrop will be available to take photos in front of with your hard-earned medal. Scissortail Park has a huge garden to sprawl out on and woodlands, a lake and boathouse, children’s playground, grand promenade, water features, dog park and interactive fountains to explore.

Off the Wall at Oklahoma Contemporary Featuring three Oklahoma-based artists — Sarah Ahmad, romy owens and Marium Rana — Off the Wall features largescale works that come in stunning and unexpected forms. These artists work in fiber, textiles and mixed media, using techniques that range from sewing and quilting to the intricate application of paint and the exploration of cutting-edge technology.

Spark in the Park Western Wares at National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum Designs from the region are used in every area of life, from home goods to clothing and accessories, and Western style is more than cowboy boots and jeans. This is one of several new exhibits at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum exploring Western culture and its influence on the past and present.

The Perfect Shot at Oklahoma City Museum of Art The Perfect Shot will feature more than 80 sports photographs by Walter Iooss Jr. – ranging from a girl striking out at a high school softball game to NFL players winning the Super Bowl – that highlight the universal emotions that athletes all over the world know well.

EAT LOCAL Packard’s New American Kitchen On 10th and Robinson, you’ll find Packard’s, an American restaurant serving up seasonal dishes, craft cocktails and weekend brunch.

Their building was originally the 1920’s Packard Automobile showroom, so with the good food comes historic touches and charm.

The Hall’s Pizza Kitchen Family owned and operated, Hall’s is in Midtown and offers wood-fired pizza, beverages and sweet treats. On Saturday mornings, they serve brunch pizzas and bakery items. Hall’s is really a restaurant that can do it all!

OSO on Paseo If you love traditional Mexican street tacos, look no further than Oso. Vegan and vegetarian-friendly options abound, plus specialty cocktails as modern and fun as the restaurant’s décor. While tacos dominate the menu, there are a lot of other options to choose from for even the pickiest of eaters.

Nostalgia and good vibes converge at Spark. Conveniently located in Scissortail Park, Spark is a small restaurant that specializes in burgers, bites, and cold delights. Their environment is colorful and welcoming, and the food is simply delicious.

The Jones Assembly You can’t go wrong with anything on their menu, but The Jones also doubles as a music venue, so dinner isn’t always available (check online for their current line-up). Go for lunch and enjoy the beautiful space and pair it with Gnocco Fritto accompanied by their Dips + Spreads, ceviche or some of the best fried okra in the metro.

The Old Spaghetti Factory Dining at The Old Spaghetti Factory is an experience. Their new location in Bricktown is adorned with antique lighting, intricate stained glass and an old-fashioned trolley car for guests to dine in. Enjoy their family friendly dining atmosphere for lunch or dinner. While it’s easy to fill up on their famous three-course meals and delectable pastas, don’t forget to leave room for spumoni.

RACE SHUTTLES On Sunday, shuttles from partner hotels will make continual loops from 4:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. (last trip along the Meridian and NW Expressway corridors).

Starting at 10:00 a.m., buses will begin transporting back to the partner hotels or as soon as possible.

We highly encourage the use of shuttles during Race Weekend as there is limited parking in the Downtown area.

Shuttle information will be posted in the lobby, and all runners must report to the designated Runner Pickup site marked by an Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon shuttle flag to be picked up by a shuttle. Shuttles stop for runners only at the partner hotels, not spectators or volunteers.

Please keep in mind that depending on hotel location, it could be anywhere from a 15- to 45-minute ride. It is the runner’s responsibility to arrive on time to the Start Line and plan for potential traffic and possible railroad crossing delays.

Shuttling in from partner hotels: You will be dropped off at NW 5th Street and Robinson, one block from the Start Line.

Returning to partner hotels: Pickup will be on Mick Cornett Drive (between the Omni Hotel and OKC Convention Center). Shuttles will make continual loops back to partner hotels from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Staying downtown: The Streetcar will be running from 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. on Saturday and 4:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, and

OPENING DAY OF

2022 FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS IMPORTANT DAY IN CITY’S HISTORY

April 19 is an important day in Oklahoma City. Looking back 27 years ago, artists were arriving in Oklahoma to set up their booths and staff were putting the finishing touches on the 1995 Festival of the Arts. This is a highly anticipated week in the city and one of the largest outdoor arts festivals in the country. There was excitement because this signaled spring was here!

Just a few blocks away in downtown Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995, at 9:02 a.m., the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building was bombed in a senseless act of violence. 168 lives were lost that day. The city would begin to deal with the shock and horror and the tough decision was made to cancel the Festival of the Arts for that year. The organization reeled with uncertainty while arts organizations around the country pitched in to help and save the Oklahoma City Arts Council. Even artists that were already in town were put to work creating pieces of art around the city in hospitals and at the convention center where hundreds of first responders and rescue workers were housed.

Today, the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum stands on the now sacred ground to honor those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever.

The Festival of the Arts has been an OKC tradition since 1967 and has a close connection to the Memorial and Museum through the acts of kindness shown by the Arts Council Oklahoma City, artists and volunteers immediately after the bombing. Marathon Qualifiers WHERE CHAMPIONS ARE MADE The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon is honored to be a qualifying marathon for both the Boston Marathon and the 2022 Series of the Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda Age Group World Rankings.

The Boston Marathon automatically receives a list of all official finishers of the Memorial Marathon and their tag (chip) and gun times. The time entered on your Boston Marathon registration will be checked against the official time that is on file. Qualifying times for the Boston Marathon vary by age group.

Abbott rankings occur during the qualifying period, which began January 1, 2022. Runners compete in eligible marathons across the world to earn world ranking points. At the end of the qualifying period, the top-ranked runners in each age category will be invited to the 2023 AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Championships. The first Championships were held within the 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon on October 3, 2021.

Race Day Essentials Calm those race day jitters by making sure that you have everything packed the night before!

RACE BIB All race participants must wear their race bib to enter the Memorial Marathon corrals, so be sure you put it on first thing in the morning by using the 4 safety pins provided in your registration packet. It must be worn visibly on your front the entire duration of the race and must include all emergency and medical information on the back of the bib.

COVID-19 HEALTH & SAFETY POLICIES All runners are required to either provide proof of vaccination or produce a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of their race to participate in the Memorial Marathon, Half Marathon, Relay and 5K. Anyone over 12 years of age participating in the Kids Marathon must also provide the same proof. There will be separate start times for the Full and Half Marathons to allow for better social distancing. Dick Beardsley Dick won the 1981 London Marathon and almost pulled off a stunning upset in the 1982 Boston Marathon, finishing second by two seconds to Alberto Salazar in a race that still stands today as one of the most memorable in Marathon history.

The “Duel in the Sun,” as it was dubbed, was the closest finish ever at the world’s premier marathon and both runners broke the course and the American records. You can catch Dick running the Half Marathon at the Memorial Marathon this weekend.

Bill Rodgers Bill won the 1975 Boston Marathon and broke the Boston record, the American record and it was the first sub two hour and ten minute time 2:09:55 run at Boston. He became famous for how he ran this race as he stopped for water and to tie his shoes, which were Nike racing shoes that he got in the mail a week before the race from Steve Prefontaine. The shoes were a bit large and he would have to stop and tie them up for better support.

Whit Raymond Whit has announced every Memorial Marathon for the last decade. His passion for the running industry, combined with an infectious energy, and in-depth knowledge of the events he works, culminate to create incredible excitement at numerous finish lines around the world!

Runners can hear Whit announce them personally as they cross the Finish Line.

Joan Benoit Samuelson Joan won the 1979 Boston Marathon with a time of 2:35:15, knocking eight minutes off the competition record.

Despite having surgery on her Achilles tendons two years earlier, she repeated her marathon success with a victory in 1983, setting a course record of 2:22:43.

That took more than two minutes off the world’s best time, set by Norway’s Grete Waitz in the London Marathon only a day earlier. Her Boston record was not broken for another 11 years.

Bart Yasso Bart served as the Chief Running Officer for Runner’s World magazine and he’s one of only a few people to have completed races on all seven continents.

Bart has completed the Ironman five times and participated in the Badwater 146 Ultramarathon, racing 146 miles through Death Valley. He’s a member of the Running USA Hall of Champions and creator of the Yasso 800s, a marathontraining schedule used by thousands around the world.

Marko Cheseto In 2011, Cheseto went missing for 56 hours in an Alaskan snow storm and suffered from hypothermia and severe frostbite on his hands and feet. Doctors eventually had to amputate both of Cheseto’s feet above the ankles. However, this did not slow him down. In 2018, Cheseto competed in a marathon for the first time at the New York City Marathon, becoming the second double amputee in history to finish in under three hours.

At the 2019 Chicago Marathon, Cheseto set a world record for a marathon by a double amputee with a time of 2:37:23.

Dan Little Dan Little, a Madill, Oklahoma native, set a record of his own in 2019 when he became the oldest person, by nine years, to finish the World Marathon Challenge.

This challenge consists of seven marathons, completed in seven days, in seven continents. Dan is no stranger to running, having run the Memorial Marathon several times as well as many others. Dan plans to tackle the World Marathon Challenge again in 2022!

With a push for a healthier Oklahoma, Governor Kevin Stitt teamed up with the Memorial Marathon, challenging relay runners to compete against his own team.

All registered relay teams will automatically compete in the Governor’s Relay Challenge.

Load into the corrals from Robinson or Hudson on 6th, 7th, or 8th street.

• Parents with strollers must start in the back of the corrals for the safety of the runners.

3. COLOR GROUP WAVE START Each runner will be assigned a wave start color group noted by their bib color.

• Team members of a school group will have the same color group assigned to them.

A school team will not be separated.

• Individuals and school teams will find out their color group and the order of the waves at school packet pick-up (for schools) or the race Expo (for individuals).

• When you arrive at the Start Line, look for Safety Net Runners holding large signs matching the color of that wave and line up behind them.

• Each wave will run together, go through the Finish Line, receive a finisher’s medal, connect with a parent or school team, exit the corral, receive a jump rope and enjoy the beautiful Scissortail Park.

6. TEAR TAG PROCEDURES 4. SAFETY NET RUNNERS A team of Safety Net Runners will run the entire 1.2-mile course with the athletes. They will encourage runners and enforce safety all the way to the Finish Line. Safety Net Runners will be in Bright Yellow shirts this year!

5. FINISH LINE The Kids Marathon will finish near Scissortail Park, Oklahoma City Boulevard between Walker and Harvey! Kids will be cheered across the Finish Line by popular mascots and be handed a Kids Marathon medal, Chick-Fil-A sandwich, Dole fruit cup, jump rope and water. The runners will then be directed to designated locations along the Boulevard in the Finishers Corral to connect with their parents/guardians/teachers with matching tear tags.

Only runners with bibs will be allowed in the Finish Line shoot. All others will need to stay in the designated location until we can safely connect kids with school groups and parents.

Only registered race participants will be allowed on the race course and in the corral.

Adults with a tear tag to claim a child are permitted into the Kids Finisher Corral.

Volunteers in brightly colored shirts and a very visible OKC Police presence will be in place the entire time.

Each child is issued a bib to wear on race day with a “tear tag” at the bottom with the same number. A parent, guardian, or teacher will be required to provide the matching tag for the child to leave the Kids Finisher Corral area.

7. COURSE RULES Following Department of Homeland Security standards for outdoor events, items prohibited at the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon are backpacks, hydration vests, ruck packs, or anything over-the-shoulder are not allowed on buses, courses, or at the Start or Finish Line. Running belts, handheld water bottles, or clip-on water bottles less than one liter are allowed for you to use in these areas. Scooters, drones, dogs and over-sized costumes are also not allowed on the course. Firefighters are allowed air tanks pre-approved by the OKC bomb squad team.

KIDS Marathon 8. WHERE TO WATCH Parents can watch from the Start Line between 5th and 6th on Harvey, anywhere along the race course, or line the south fencing on Oklahoma City Boulevard and Walker to watch the finish. Please keep in mind if you want to watch the Start and Finish, the children are only running 1.2 miles and will have a quick race, so be sure to head to the Finish Line quickly!

9. KIDS MARATHON SCHOOL GROUP AWARDS Students from schools all across the OKC Metro are participating in the Kids Marathon.

Two schools will be awarded the INTEGRIS Kids Marathon Fitness Challenge, promoting healthy choices and lifestyles! The first award is for the highest percentage of participation based on enrollment, while the second award is for the highest number of participants based on enrollment. Both awards include a $500 cash price for the school’s PE department, a traveling trophy, a video featured on the Memorial and Marathon websites, KFOR-TV and many social media channels.

10. KIDS MARATHON GRADUATES The OKC Memorial Kids Marathon is for students 12 years and under. Once students reach the age of 13, they can graduate and run the Memorial 5K or other Memorial Marathon races. Keep up that healthy lifestyle, and thank you for being part of the Run to Remember!

NEW YEAR, MORE SCHOOLS The Kids Marathon is excited to be back in April and over double the amount of school groups participating in the event from last year! With four full months to prepare, team captains have been gearing up their students and registering for school rallies. Rallies are a great way to get kids engaged and thinking about the Kids Marathon. This year, we brought Rumble with us to visit schools and we are thankful for our Chair Bison.

A new generation must learn the senselessness of violence and it is our mission to ensure they know what happened 27 years ago. The Kids Marathon is more than a run, it is a way to teach the younger generation Why We Run. WHY WE RUN A RUN TO REMEMBER

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon is unlike any other marathon out there.

While the logistics may look the same — there are winners, Water Stops, mile markers, Finish Line tape, and medals — the mission of the race is what makes it stand apart.

What you don’t see at other races are the 168 banners that line the final stretch.

168 banners with 168 different names and faces. 168 names and faces that are no longer with us. 168 names and faces that left empty chairs, grieving friends and families, and a community forever impacted.

That’s why the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon was created — a Run to Remember. The Run to Remember brings together runners and spectators from around the world to honor those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. Each race begins with 168 seconds of silence in honor of 168 lives lost. This race is about more than running — it’s about celebrating life. That’s the spirit in which the Memorial Marathon was conceptualized by three avid runners who, while on a morning run, created the outline for this inspiring event.

Survivor Tree at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum that stands strong today, the community stands equally strong in its support of this memorable event. Every neighborhood comes out to celebrate — each with its own unique tradition — and spectators enthusiastically cheer on each runner to the end. It’s a celebration not to be missed!

The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum is the sole beneficiary of Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon event proceeds. The Memorial and Museum receive no annual funding from local, state or federal government, so this event — the Memorial’s largest fundraiser — is critical for the mission to continue.

Our mission is to celebrate life, reach for the future, honor the memories of those who were killed and unite the world in hope. This is not just another marathon. It is a Run to Remember, and a race to show that we can each make a difference and change the world.

The Run to Remember is and has been an important event in helping the Oklahoma City community to heal. What happened on April 19 and the impact of violence is a lesson that has more relevance than ever and is an essential story for younger generations to learn.

Each runner has a different story, a different “why?” These are just a few of those stories.

Ran Them All The Ran Them Alls are an exclusive group of runners who have run every Memorial Marathon since the very beginning.

It requires dedication, passion and a bit of logistical planning for each of these runners to attend annually.

Deanna Duplanti is one of these elite Ran Them Alls.

Deanna grew up loving the outdoors – biking, skateboarding and running everywhere. But her first race wasn’t until 1997. And she would argue it was divine intervention for running the first Memorial Marathon in 2001, a marathon driving distance from her home in Arkansas.

“I don’t have a connection to anybody here in Oklahoma,” Deanna said. “I just felt driven to come here and run there first.” After that first marathon, Deanna was hooked.

“I didn’t have a connection before, but now I feel like there is a kindred spirit. Each year. Very humbling. There’s such an excitement here for the Marathon, but there’s so much love on the course. People come out of their homes and cheer us on. The Ran Them All-ers are like my brothers and sisters, and I keep coming back because of the community here.”

But it was more than the community that kept Deanna coming back year after year. Deanna runs each year in honor of Mickey B. Maroney, one of the 168 individuals killed on April 19, 1995.

“Running on behalf or in honor of the 168 is just so inspiring to make that next step. I flipped a page the first year as they gave us names to look at and I just chose Mickey. There wasn’t any reason at that time, but I could not see running for anybody else each year like I have for him.”

Deanna will run her 22nd OKC Memorial Marathon this year and plans to come back every year until she isn’t able to participate.

Running Together Running isn’t always an individual sport. In fact, an Oklahoma City school, Oklahoma Christian University (OC), has put together one of the largest teams the Memorial Marathon has ever had – 600 runners. Getting people together to build community means so much – especially for a cause that’s near and dear to your heart. And Team OC’s passion for gathering this large team comes from a special place. They run in memorial of a former teammate, Darci Thompson, who passed away a year and a half ago and is the founder of Team OC. “There were people out there that would not be running if it weren’t for Darci’s kind of spark. And she just inspired people to be fit,” said Mark Thompson, husband of Darci Thompson. “The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon weekend is the best that Oklahoma has to offer. Putting yourself out there and plugging into the community and giving back to the community, and that spirit just becomes contagious.”

Associate Dean of Students Amy Roberts reflects on the bigger purpose of the Memorial Marathon and why it’s so important for Team OC to be involved. “It honors something that happened here, and we stop and we do something that betters our community, betters each other, betters our health.”

OCU student, Tresdon Janes agrees that the running club goes beyond exercise and community. “We need to remember them and the loss of them, but also the impact that they had on this world. And remember just how much the human life means to all of us.”

The OKC Memorial Marathon is all about community and supporting one another. Dubbed the Run to Remember, it’s a weekend of celebrating life together. Arianne Gillham, OC Fitness Center Director, explains how to make Race Weekend stretch beyond yourself.

“Encourage your family. You know, it always starts at home.

Reach out to your friends and your coworkers, just anybody who can enjoy that day with you.”

Age Is Just A Number Completing any one of the OKC Memorial Marathon races is a huge accomplishment. However, one particular runner stood out amongst the rest in the 2021 registration with an extra special accomplishment. Local Chickasha, Oklahoma resident, Burrel Gambel was the oldest participant at 100 years old.

“I’m retired Air Force and really believe in exercise and physical examinations annually,” said Burrel. “At age 90, my doctor recommended I attempt the marathon. The Full Marathon was out of question but I decided on the Half.”

Celebrating his 101st birthday in February, Burrel has decided to hang up his running shoes after 10 years of participating in the OKC Memorial Marathon. After completing the 5K in October 2021, Burrel explains why his running days were over.

“I was pretty tired,” said Burrel. “After I finished, I gave an interview and I was out of breath.”

Imagine that! Burrel says while he originally started with the Half Marathon, he eventually switched to the 5K. “I did four Half Marathons before I decided I need to switch to the 5K. One year, I did the Half Marathon in a hail storm and it was cold! But as soon as I got home and took a hot shower, I decided to go ahead and do it again.”

But Burrel’s reason for participating goes beyond exercise and healthy living. He walks in honor of Susan Winchester’s sister, Dr. Margaret (Peggy) Clark, who was killed during the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, “I consider Susan, who is also from Chickasha, a close friend.”

Burrel’s friends and family have joined in on the Run to Remember too.

“The last Half I did, my neighbor, daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter all walked with me. It took a long time of course, but we did it.”

A Marathon Love Story For Jill and Dick Beardsley, the OKC Memorial Marathon brings back more than running. For the Beardsleys, the last weekend in April symbolizes the first time they met.

Having won the London Marathon, Grandma’s Marathon, and famously coming in second in the Boston Marathon, Dick Beardsley’s reputation preceded him. He was invited to lend support and speak for several years as a featured legendary marathoner at the Memorial Marathon. He spent his weekend signing autographs, reliving old stories with fond racing friends, and working the Health & Fitness Expo, mingling with other runners and vendors.

“I was at the Expo doing talks and a meet and greet thing, signing posters. I was just walking around the expo and came across the Austin Marathon Booth.”

It’s there that Dick met Jill.

Jill had worked for The Austin Marathon for several years under the owner and her close friend, Stacey Conley. Dick stopped to speak to the pair and later they all grabbed dinner with other racers and running legends.

However, a spark was growing.

Fast forward to the Austin Marathon, Dick was invited to come speak and Jill took the initiative. Dick recalls Jill asking Stacey if she could be in charge of getting “the guy from Minnesota” to and from his different commitments over race weekend.

The spark grew from there as the pair began to email and meet up at various marathons. Now Dick and Jill are married and enjoy running their bed & breakfast in Minnesota. They both still run. Although Jill maintains she is the faster of the two.

“I can run faster than him. Just not on the race course. He shifts over to race mode there. But in training, I run faster.”

However, the Memorial Marathon maintains a special place in both their hearts.

“I fell in love with the whole idea of it. It’s a marathon and yes, people get together to run. But what it’s really about is looking back at what happened and remembering the adults and the kids that passed,” said Dick. “Every year that I come the first thing I would do is go to the Memorial. If that doesn’t give you goosebumps seeing those chairs and especially those little ones. This race gives you hope.”

These stories are what make the Run to Remember. It’s a weekend that is dedicated to more than just running.

It’s running for a purpose. It’s running to remember the 168 lives killed on April 19, 1995. As heartbreaking as that day was, these stories give us hope. Hope that we can continue to teach the brutality of the event and the tenderness of the response. That senseless violence does not destroy a community, but brings it closer together.

Top Five Tips For Your OKC Marathon Finish Line Photos 1. Make sure your bib number is attached to your chest and visible so your photo proofs can be sent to the right person.

2. When approaching a photographer on the course, look at the photographer and smile.

3. When crossing the Finish Line, look up and SMILE! Don’t look down to check your watch as you cross the Finish Line or you will be looking down when we snap your Finish Line Photo. Remember you have an official timing chip to record your time.

4. Finishing with a running partner? No problem! Grab their hand as you cross the Finish Line and Candid Color Photography will take a picture of everyone!

5. Continue past the Finish Line area to avoid congestion.

with new marathon medical director Dr. Brian Coleman, MD University of Oklahoma Health, Family and Sports Medicine

Running, at any length, requires proper training both before AND after a race.

Running, while an incredible sport to be enjoyed both individually and in groups, can be draining and hard on the body. As a marathoner himself, Memorial Marathon Medical Director Dr. Brian Coleman speaks to how runners can properly prepare before, during and after their race.

“The months leading up to race day are the time to dial in and enjoy the process. Work on pace, distance, fueling strategies and running with people,” said Dr. Coleman.

Dr. Coleman has run the Memorial Marathon Full Marathon six times, bringing his marathon total to 76 Full Marathons in 48 states. Along with his impressive running history, Dr. Coleman has assisted in the Memorial Marathon Medical Tent under Dr. Tom Coniglione since 2003, minus the years he was deployed overseas.

BEFORE • Prepare Properly. Focus on the process of preparing and readying your body for the run.

• Consider the 10% Rule. Ramp up your training gradually and don’t increase too many miles or too much speed too soon.

• Plan your attire. Work on both your pace AND dress during training. Make sure you have the shoes and socks you like prior to Race Weekend. Be sure to monitor weather and have your outfit ready to go for race day.

• Fuel. Test new fluids or energy snacks and fueling strategies before race day.

DAY OF RACE • Pace Yourself. Try not to get too excited and go out too fast.

• Set Goals. Set reasonable goals that give you something to run towards.

• Run Friendly. Stay aware of your surroundings and people running near you.

Enjoy and interact with the crowds cheering you on. Remember to thank the many volunteers that make this weekend happen!

If you have a history of injury or are otherwise concerned about your orthopedic health in any way, talk with your doctor about what warm-up and recovery activities may be best for you. As a general rule, Dr. Coleman recommends incorporating some of the following habits into your running routine to contribute to better post-run recovery.

• Have Fun! This is the time to enjoy and soak in the fun and the environment of the race and the event.

IMMEDIATE POST-RACE • Change of Clothes. Try to have a change of clothes to get out of wet or sweaty race clothes.

• Meds. Avoid NSAID anti-inflammatory meds (ibuprofen, naproxen) for day of race due to an increased risk of kidney problems with dehydration. Acetaminophen may be ok.

• Enjoy! Continue your active recovery by walking around the Finish Line Festival.

• Stay Hydrated & Refuel. Hydrate and refuel with a well-balanced meal within a few hours. People tend to not eat a lot post-run and then are very hungry on day 2-3 after marathon. Try to maintain your diet routine.

Avoid excessive alcohol.

• Massage. Consider foam rolling or massage prior to having soreness set in.

FOLLOWING DAYS • Active Recovery. Continue walking or slow jogging.

• Compression. Consider compression socks, especially if traveling by car or plane after a race. It can help with soreness and risk of blood clots.

• Review. Have fun reviewing your race and the things you learned and the exciting parts of the run.

• Active Stretching. Continue to work stretching into your everyday routine for long-term care.

Runner Safety on the Course The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon’s goal is to provide a fun and safe event for everyone.

We encourage you to download the Memorial Marathon App to your Android or Apple device before Race Weekend and follow our social media and media partners to stay up to date.

Medical Issues There are 15 medical aid stations on Sunday and one on Saturday staffed with some of the best medical professionals in the state along the race course. Each station will be flying a flag of the color corresponding to the heat stress at the time (see chart). Flag colors will change within 3 minutes of a modification in the heat stress level.

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon asserts that upon entering the event, each runner assumes the responsibility with the potential risks that any marathon presents.

It is the runner’s responsibility to list pre-existing medical conditions and an emergency contact on their individual bibs. All runners should be discerning of their own fitness level in their decision to enter the Marathon and associated events. It is strongly advised that all participants cooperate with directives given by Marathon officials should an emergency arise and assist in ensuring the safety of their fellow participants, particularly when the conditions are not ideal.

The OKC Memorial Marathon has adopted the WBGT (Wet Bulb Globe Temperature) index as its standard. High heat and humidity, as measured in accordance with the American College of Sports Medicine recommendations for endurance events, could result in the cancellation of the event.

WBGT was developed because the ordinary temperature alone does not provide a realistic guide to the effects of heat and does not take humidity and heat radiation into consideration.

As the WBGT rises, so do sweating and fluid losses. With fluid losses come the risk of various heat injuries: heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. It is strongly recommended that all runners slow their pace and reduce their risk of heat stress if conditions warrant. Hydration stations do not

prevent heat stress if your pace is not adjusted.

While runners should increase their fluid intake as the WBGT rises, be careful to avoid excessive water intake and the possibility of overhydrating or hyponatremia.

Hyponatremia can cause serious health consequences, including confusion, coma and death.

Additionally, salt in the form of pretzels and/or pickle juice will be available along the last half of the course. Supplemental salt will help prevent cramps.

From your training, you should have a general idea of the amount of fluid you need when running under various conditions of temperature and humidity. The Marathon reserves the right for medical professionals to pull runners from the course if exhibiting signs of physical stress.

Water Stops The OKC Memorial Marathon, in partnership with SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital, offers 22 Water Stops on Sunday and two on Saturday along the course. There are more than adequate amounts of water to ensure hydration under favorable conditions. If those conditions worsen, additional amounts will be pre-staged and deployed but it should be reasonable to assume that supplies may not be limitless due to logistical constraints entailed in such a distribution effort. Thanks to our partners at Heartland, sanitization stations will be available at Water Stops.

Race Alteration and Weather Policy Perry Weather will provide tailored forecasts for the course that highlight any weather concern.

These forecasts help race officials plan accordingly and set up the

proper contingency plans. Weather updates are available on the Marathon App. If severe weather arises, Perry Weather provides an on-site meteorologist during Race Weekend to determine its impact on the race. We understand the commitment participants have made in entering the race.

However, the decision regarding the cancellation and/or alterations will be based on safety. If at any time community resources are threatened, we will act to protect them from unnecessary stress.

If weather conditions or other physical conditions present a danger to the participants, the Memorial Marathon officials maintain the right to cancel the race. Less threatening conditions could cause alterations to the course or length of the race to further ensure participant, volunteer and community safety. The conditions will fall under an “Act of God” and will not result in any refunding of any race entry fee or future credits. The staging of an event of this magnitude places a large financial burden on the OKC Memorial Marathon organization prior to the event date. In the event of a forced race cancellation or alteration, it is probable the financial impact of the race would not be any different than if the race were held without compromise.

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon officials, along with city officials, will make decisions regarding the cancellation or alteration of the race. Prior to the race, participants will be informed of weather conditions and how the on-course flag system works.

Race officials will describe any changes that may be decided as a result of weather or other unsafe conditions. In the case of a course evacuation, Marathon officials, police, emergency management and course marshals

will communicate throughout the course, and will direct participants to stay-in-place at shelters along the course to await transportation back to downtown Oklahoma City or away from the dangerous area along the course.

All last minute and up-to-date information will be pushed out on the Marathon App, and posted on the Marathon’s webpage, okcMarathon.com, Twitter @ okcmarathon, Facebook.com/ okcmarathon, oklahoman.com and broadcast on The Franchise 107.7, KFOR News 4 and from all public service areas along the course.

On The Course If runners are not to Mile 21 by noon in the Marathon, mile 9 by 11:00 in the Half Marathon, or mile 2 by 8:30 in the 5K, they will be shuttled back to the Finish Line Festival. This rule was recommended by the Oklahoma City Police Department due to not being able to adequately support the runners along the course.

Following Department of Homeland Security standards for outdoor events, items prohibited at the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon are backpacks, hydration vests, ruck packs, or anything over-the-shoulder are not allowed on buses, courses, or at the Start or Finish Line. Running belts, handheld water bottles, or clip-on water bottles less than one liter are allowed for you to use in these areas. Scooters, drones, dogs and over-sized costumes are also not allowed on the course.

Firefighters are allowed air tanks pre-approved by the OKC bomb squad team.
