Why We Run We are honored and excited to welcome everyone to the 21st Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. Through schedule changes and virtual runs, we are thankful to finally be together to Run to Remember. We know there are endless marathons to choose from, so we are incredibly grateful you chose to run with us!

Twenty-one years ago, three businessmen created this Marathon to represent something greater than itself.

Now, more than ever, our world needs to be reminded of Why We Run. We come

together over five races to pause and honor those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever.

The deeper in history April 19, 1995 becomes, the further disconnected future generations could become from its impactful legacy. We must all shoulder the responsibility to ensure these stories live on. We hope you will visit the Memorial and Museum to learn the sobering account of that dreadful day in history and take your part in preserving the past, while educating the future. WHY WE RUN WEEKEND SERIES This year Race Day becomes Race Weekend. Runners have the unique opportunity to double their involvement and double their impact! The Why We Run Weekend Series, presented by Inasmuch Foundation, gives runners the chance to run the 5K on Saturday, October 2, and then run the Half Marathon or Full Marathon on Sunday, October 3.

Why We Run Weekend Series participants receive an event shirt and medals for the races run, plus a special commemorative Weekend Series medal and shirt. Runners also get to experience 168 seconds of silence prior to each race and increase their support of the Oklahoma City National Memorial mission.

HEALTH & SAFETY POLICY UPDATE 2021 COVID test administration and results tracking. Free, on-site testing will begin on Thursday morning, September 30 at 7:00 a.m. Exact hours, locations, and additional details will be communicated directly to all participants. Tested participants will not receive immediate access to enter the Health & Fitness Expo on October 1-2 for bib number pick-up and will be required to wait for confirmation of test results.

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon will require participants in the 21st Annual Memorial Marathon set for October 2-3, 2021, to either provide proof of vaccination or produce a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of their race in order to participate in the Memorial Marathon, Half Marathon, Relay and 5K. Anyone over 12 years of age participating in the Kids Marathon must also provide the same proof.

In an effort to create the safest environment possible, Marathon race officials have set a race cap at 12,000 which is 50 percent of the runners that participated in 2019 and adopted enhanced health and safety policies. These emulate best practices being used in major marathons and public events across the country and throughout the State of Oklahoma. The changes to the participant policies include: •

If an individual tests positive or has been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 within 14 days of the event, they are asked not to participate in any of the Marathon events.

•

Anyone over the age of 12 running the Memorial Marathon, Half Marathon, Relay, 5K or Kids Marathon must bring to the Health & Fitness Expo personal identification (e.g., driver’s license, passport) along with a completed vaccination card of being fully vaccinated prior to 14 days of race day OR a negative test taken within 72 hours of the race (October 2-3) they are registered to run.

•

Every participant must provide proof of either full vaccination prior to 14 days of race day or a negative test within 72 hours of the race (October 2-3) they are registered to run and pick up bibs personally. Participants must show their personal photo ID with such proof. Upon successful verification of a vaccination record or a negative COVID-19 test, registered runners will receive a bracelet which must be worn at all times in order to access the runner corral, medical aid stations, the medal and food area following completion of the race and to ride an official Marathon hotel shuttle.

•

The quickest way to enter the Memorial’s Health & Fitness Expo and receive race day materials is to be fully vaccinated and have an original, legible copy, photocopy or digital copy of your vaccination card.

•

Masks will be expected to be worn in the Health & Fitness Expo, on bus shuttles, at the Start Line corrals and after crossing the Finish Line. Masks will not be required while running the course.

•

Proof of vaccination can be the original paper copy, legible photocopy or digital copy of official COVID-19 Vaccination Card and must be shown with a personal photo ID.

•

Masks will be required to enter the medical tents and will be available near the entrance of each tent. All medical volunteers along the race course will be vaccinated.

•

Individuals unable to provide proof of full vaccination prior to 14 days of race day or a negative test within 72 hours of the race (October 2-3) they are registered to run will not be allowed to enter the Health & Fitness Expo on October 1-2 and will be unable to pick up their race bib and other necessary materials that allow for participation in the event.

•

Water stops will practice social distancing and have food items individually portioned for runners to pick up. Sanitization stations will be located near all water stops along the course.

•

Marathon volunteers will also be wearing PPE for everyone’s safety and protection.

•

Participants and spectators are expected to follow best practices on personal hygiene, covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing, handwashing and social distancing.

•

The Race start will happen in waves allowing for distance between runners.

•

The OKC Memorial Marathon policy recognizes COVID-19 vaccines authorized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Federal Drug Administration and the World Health Organization. Accepted COVID-19 tests are those that have received FDA emergency use authorization (EUA) and include RT-PCR, RE-LAMP, lateral flow, and rapid antigen tests.

For more than two decades, Oklahoma’s News 4 has been the exclusive television broadcast home of the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. KFOR’s team of reporters, photographers, producers and production members spend months preparing for the live telecast. For Channel 4’s veteran journalists, it’s a deeply-personal commitment that stretches back to their days on-thescene in April 1995. Among those journalists, anchors Kevin Ogle and Linda Cavanaugh. “Every year, the OKC Memorial Marathon reminds us of the strength and resiliency of the people whose lives were changed on that day,” Ogle said. “We are honored to be a part of this event.”

In addition to the television broadcast, News 4 will stream hours of live coverage on multiple social media platforms, so a worldwide audience can enjoy the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon.

This year, with the races taking place on two consecutive days, News 4 is afforded a unique opportunity. KFOR’s crews will be on hand October 2nd to record Saturday’s events, then air edited clips of those races during the live broadcast on October 3rd. That means Saturday’s race participants will have the chance to see themselves on television Sunday morning, from the comfort of their own home!

SAY SOMETHING WHERE TO WATCH You don’t have to be a runner to enjoy the fun and energy of the Marathon. Here are the top spots to cheer on and support the runners.

The Start – There’s nothing quite like it! If you plan on cheering on the Marathon runners, you can’t miss the Start Line and experience the 168 seconds of silence.

Thunder Alley – (Mile 1-2) Located outside of Paycom Center and presented by the OKC Thunder.

Bricktown – (Mile 1-2) As runners get settled in, anticipation is high. Early on runners are still close together and the effect of seeing thousands of runners all at once is stunning.

State Capitol Complex – (Mile 3-4) Check out a new portion of the course on the east side of OKC! The Oklahoma State Capitol is a beautiful setting and the ease of access makes this a perfect place to view the early stages of the race.

Sparrow Park / Edgemere Park – (Mile 5-6) Robinson entrance from 36th. This is a notable stomping ground for runners as the road winds through historic neighborhoods with room to view from the east side of the park.

Participant safety is of the upmost concern for the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. Thanks to the hard work of Marathon Staff, Chairmen, Volunteers, and Law Enforcement, there is a detailed security plan for all race courses.

Whether you’re a runner, spectator, or volunteer – trust yourself. If you See Something, Say Something. Follow the steps below to report any suspicious behavior: 1. Do not hesitate. Call 9-1-1 first, making sure you speak calmly while describing the details in full.

2. Notify a law enforcement officer or race official – they are stationed all along the course – after calling 9-1-1.

Items prohibited at the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon are backpacks, hydration vests, ruck packs, air tanks, or anything that can be carried over the shoulder. Scooters, drones, dogs and over-sized costumes are also not allowed on the course.

The only bags allowed on race day are the clear gear check bags provided to participants at race packet pick up at the Health & Fitness Expo. Gear Check will be located on the northwest corner of the Oklahoma City Convention

Center and can be accessed via Robinson Avenue and Mick Cornett Drive.

Be sure to never leave a bag unattended as it could result in the closing of the race or a certain portion of the course. Please do your part and help us ensure the safety of runners, spectators and volunteers by taking responsibility for your belongings. Please report any unattended bags to a law enforcement officer or race official.

Crown Heights / Gorilla Hill - (Mile 7) 38th- 40th and Shartel Avenue. As the half and full marathoners get settled in, they appreciate seeing friendly faces.

The Village – (Mile 13-14) Cheer on the Marathon runners through the City of The Village as they pass the halfway mark.

Nichols Hills / Grand Blvd – (Mile 18-20) Park at Nichols Hills Plaza or the lot at 63rd and Grand. Spectators can get very near the course and see how the race is unfolding – easily proceed downtown to watch the finish.

Classen Blvd – (Mile 21-23) This long stretch on Classen Boulevard between 50th and 63rd includes the 20-mile mark, which is an important point mentally for the runners to have support.

The Finish – Finish Line is just short of Scissortail Park at Oklahoma City Boulevard and Walker. Watch runners on the straightaway, finishing to the cheers of enthusiastic crowds.

Every emotion imaginable – awe, empathy, surprise and accomplishment can be witnessed and shared. This is the perfect finish to a perfect day.

The Oklahoma Standard Challenge is back and in-person this year! The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon and the Williams Route 66 Marathon in Tulsa have teamed up to show the unity between the people in our great state. Those who participate in both the Marathon or Half Marathon in Oklahoma City and the Marathon or Half Marathon in Tulsa, will receive a special commemorative Oklahoma Standard medal at the Williams Route 66 Marathon Finish Line!

Over the next three years, each medal will highlight one of the three tenets of the Oklahoma Standard – Service, Honor, and Kindness. This year, we focus on Service – on April 19, 1995, Oklahomans united in the face of the devastating Oklahoma City bombing, showing up to serve their community in any way they could. That spirit of generosity still lives in

Oklahomans today, and we call it the Oklahoma Standard.

KINDNESS REPAYS KINDNESS When this retired U.S. Marine Corps had to wait at the Harrah Tag Agency to get his real I.D., he decided to get out his weed eater and trim the grass around the office. The staff thanked him by bringing out snacks, showing that acts of kindness leads to more kindness!

2021 OKLAHOMA CITY MEMORIAL MARATHON HEALTH & FITNESS EXPO The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon Health & Fitness Expo is a two-day event, presented by our longtime partners, OU Health and the Oklahoma City Convention & Visitors Bureau. Each registered race participant must come to the Expo to pick up their race packet.

Admission to the Expo is free and open to the public. Masks are required inside the Expo.

Our last Expo in April 2019 welcomed a record 47,000 attendees, including runners from all 50 states and a dozen countries, along with their friends and families. The Expo showcased nearly 80 exhibitors featuring a wide array of products and services geared towards runners, walkers, health-minded consumers, and the general public.

While it will look different this year, the Expo will still be a fun and festive atmosphere and serve as the official kickoff of Marathon weekend.

TIED TO OUR MISSION

CATCH A RIDE ON OUR HOTEL RACE SHUTTLES On Sunday, hotel shuttles will make continual loops from 4:30am to 8:00am (last trip along the Meridian and NW Expressway corridors). Starting at 10:00am, buses will begin transporting back to the hotels or as soon as possible. We highly encourage the use of shuttles race weekend as there is limited parking in the Downtown area.

Shuttle information will be posted in the lobby, and all runners must report to the designated Runner Pick Up site marked by an Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon shuttle flag to be picked up by a shuttle. Shuttles stop for runners only at the hospitality hotels, not spectators or volunteers.

Please keep in mind that depending on hotel location, it could be anywhere from a 15 to 45-minute ride. It is the runner’s responsibility to arrive on time to the Start Line and plan for potential traffic.

Shuttling in from partner hotels: You will be dropped off at NW 5th Street and Robinson one block from the Start Line.

Returning to partner hotels: Pickup will be at Robinson and OKC Boulevard, just west of Paycom Center.

Staying downtown: The Streetcar will be running from 5:00am to 7:00am on Saturday and 4:00am to 6:00am on Sunday, and is a great way for those staying in Bricktown to get to the Start Line!

Midtown Midtown’s mix of local restaurants, neighborhood pubs, unique shops and historic homes make it a great place to experience the best of OKC’s urban renaissance. This walkable district is buzzing at all times of day. Kitchen No. 324 Located in the heart of downtown, this beautiful banquette-dominated restaurant boasts some of the most creative breakfast and lunch fare in town. A destination for vegetarians and omnivores alike, the menu is seasonal and creative. Fried Green Tomato Benedict is a local favorite, as is the scratch biscuits with chorizo gravy. The coffee is noteworthy, and many locals just opt for a pour-over and a freshbaked pastry from the pastry counter.

Empire Slice Shop Pizza by the slice and local beer. Need we say more? You can get whole pies, too, including a menu of innovative flavor and ingredient combinations.

Empire is a late-night eats pioneer in OKC, being one of the first full restaurants to serve right up until 2 a.m.

OSO on Paseo If you love traditional Mexican street tacos, look no further than Oso. 6. Marathon Time Limit We want your race experience to be as positive and safe as possible. Runners in the Marathon will have 6.5 hours of course support starting from when the last Marathon corral is released from the Start Line. To complete the Marathon without being disqualified, you need to be to mile 20 by noon, or you will be shuttled to Scissortail Park to enjoy the Finish Line Festival.

7. Marathon Water Stops For your hydration needs, Mountain Berry Blast POWERADE and water will be provided at all Water Stops along the course and the Finish Line.

7. No Backpack Rule NO BACKPACKS ARE ALLOWED IN THE CORRAL OR ON THE COURSE. Saturday, October 2nd 1. Parking Parking is limited downtown race weekend. Check out the garages and surface lots near the Start and Finish in the Marathon App. Expect heavy traffic and plan on extra time race morning.

2. Start Line Please wear a mask at all times at the Start and Finish Line. The Kids Marathon Start Line is located between 5th and 6th on Harvey.

Kids Marathon starts at 10 a.m.

Be lined up no later than 9:30 a.m. to warm up with Rumble, the Kids Marathon Chair Bison, announcements and fun!

3. Color Group Wave Start Each runner will be assigned a wave start color group noted by their bib color.

Team members of a school group will have the same color group assigned to them.

A school team will not be separated.

Individuals and school teams will find out their color group and the order of the waves at school packet pick-up (for schools) or the race Expo (for individuals).

When you arrive at the Start Line, look for Safety Net Runners holding large signs matching the color of that wave and line up behind them.

Each wave will run together, go through the Finish Line, receive a finisher’s medal, connect with a parent or school team, exit the corral, receive a jump rope and enjoy the beautiful Scissortail Park.

4. Safety Net Runners A team of Safety Net Runners will run the entire 1.2-mile course with the athletes. They

will encourage runners and enforce safety all the way to the Finish Line. A special thank you to OERB for sponsoring our Safety Net Runners this year!

5. Finish Line NEW KIDS FINISH LINE at Scissortail Park on Oklahoma City Boulevard! Kids will be cheered across the Finish Line by popular mascots and be handed a Kids Marathon medal, Chick-Fil-A sandwich, Dole fruit cup, jump rope and water. The runners will then be directed to designated locations along the Boulevard in the Finishers Corral to connect with their parents/ guardians/teachers with matching tear tags.

6. Tear Tag Procedures Only registered race participants will be allowed on the course and in the corral.

Adults with a tear tag to claim a child are permitted into the Kids Finisher Corral.

Volunteers in brightly colored shirts and a very visible OKC Police presence will be in place the entire time.

Each child is issued a bib to wear on race day with a “tear tag” at the bottom with the same number. A parent, guardian, or teacher will be required to provide the matching tag for the child to

8. Where to Watch Parents can watch from the Start Line between 5th and 6th on Harvey, anywhere along the course, or line the south fencing on Oklahoma City Boulevard and Walker to watch the finish. Please keep in mind if you want to watch the Start and Finish, the children are only running 1.2 miles and will have a quick race, so be sure to head to the Finish Line quickly!

9. Kids Marathon School Group Awards Students from schools all across the OKC Metro are participating in the Memorial Kids Marathon. Two schools will be awarded the INTEGRIS Kids Marathon Fitness Challenge, promoting healthy choices and lifestyles! The first award is for the highest percentage of participation based on enrollment and the second award is for the highest number of participants based on enrollment.

Both awards include a $500 cash price for the school’s PE department, a traveling trophy, a video featured on the Memorial and Marathon websites, KFOR-TV, and social media channels.

10. Kids Marathon Graduates The OKC Memorial Kids Marathon is for students through 6th grade. After their 6th grade year, students can graduate to the 5K or other Memorial Marathon races. All 6th graders who complete the 2021 Memorial Kids Marathon will receive a discount code for the 2022 Memorial Marathon via email when registration opens. Keep up that healthy lifestyle, and thank

Kids Run Clubs This year, the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon held three free Kids Run Clubs over the summer to help kids begin training for the Kids Marathon! With an October race and school not starting until August, the Kids Marathon team set out to be a resource and help kids train, but more importantly learn about Why We Run. The Kids Run Club events took place on June 5, July 31, and August 28, hosting both returning Kids Marathon participants and new participants. We had several special guests stop by and join us - Hall of Fame Runner, Bart Yasso; OKC Thunder mascot Rumble, the Kid Governor of Oklahoma, Charlotte Anderson, and Cleats for Kids.

Kids Marathon Curriculum A vital aspect of the Kids Marathon is teaching the Why We Run curriculum. Kids today must understand that the Oklahoma City Memorial Kids Marathon is more than just a race. It is a way to honor and remember those impacted by the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing on April 19, 1995. The curriculum is free for parents and teachers.

Materials and resources are sent to participating school groups to help teach Why We Run and prepare for the Memorial Kids Marathon.

or the first time in two and half years, we will be running the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon in person! The annual Run to Remember brings thousands from across the nation and more than a dozen countries to pause and remember those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever on April 19, 1995.

This race still marks a painful memory for some, a distant one for others, a sign of courage and a chance to learn and grow for all.

As participants run the course, they pass the names and faces of the 168 individuals killed in the Oklahoma City bombing. During this extraordinary weekend, 26.2 miles becomes a race surrounded by people and a celebration of life that continues to share and exemplify the Oklahoma Standard.

In 2020, the Marathon pivoted to a virtual race to keep everyone safe and looked much different than years past. However, we are excited to

finally be back in person and experience this momentous race weekend together.

“What we’ve learned is that running together, and for something larger than ourselves, is an honor and something that we don’t take lightly anymore,” said Chuck Mikkelson, Memorial Marathon Training Chairman and former Landrunners President. “The Memorial Marathon is just that. We’ve been waiting two and half years to be back together and we finally have our chance!”

We’re incredibly grateful for the continued support from the running community as we navigated the everchanging environment of COVID-19.

Several groups continued to train and encourage each other in preparation for the upcoming race.

John Bivins, Half Marathoner, expressed his enthusiasm at a Memorial Marathon kick off training run. “Being with the running group again, I was crying like a baby

going down the street,” he said. “We’re family. We are a unit and the gathering here proves that.”

The Memorial Marathon is working to provide the best possible experience for our participants while keeping safety at the forefront.

“We’re watching the COVID-19 virus and variants closely. In general, we believe the Memorial Marathon can be done safely. Race Director Kari Watkins and myself are in constant evaluation of the latest news and suggested protocols.

We encourage racers to social distance as much as possible, get vaccinated and mask up. Being an outdoor event, more spacious Start and Finish lines and safely pre-prepared food boxes, we’re confident this race weekend can still safely serve as a reminder for Why We Run,” said Dr. Dale Bratzler, OU Health Chief COVID Officer.

“COVID is real and numbers are climbing. However, there are ways in which we can continue on with the marathon and be safe and the Memorial Marathon staff is doing what they can to

make this event as safe as possible for runners,” said OCCHD Epidemiologist Eddie Withers.

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon is the largest fundraiser for the privately funded Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. The Memorial and Museum were designed to remember, to teach, to offer inspiring stories and share lessons learned. More than 12 million people have visited the Memorial and Museum – they leave forever changed from their experience. Each runner receives a free entry to the Museum to experience the story race weekend.

LOOKING BACK, RUNNING FORWARD Last year proved a memorable year. We commemorated two important dates – the 25th Anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing and the 20th Anniversary of this race – conceived and created by three businessmen who wanted to bring a marathon to their hometown.

The COVID-19 pandemic also provided challenge after challenge and we adapted together through the everchanging environment. The 2020 virtual Marathon looked much different than years past, but nevertheless was an unforgettable experience that many embraced, both near and far!

Over 13,888 runners participated in the virtual race. Runners picked a day and time between October 4 – 18, 2020, mapped out their runs and tracked their miles. Runners were encouraged to find a course meaningful to them and that reminded them why they #RUNtoREMEMBER. The Marathon hosts individuals from around the world and it was incredible to witness it travel globally as people participated

virtually with their own Start and Finish Lines, representing all 50 states and 8 countries.

In order to symbolize the commitment and dedication to the Marathon and Memorial, 168 empty running shoes lined the “Start Line” in Oklahoma City.

These shoes were used to honor those who were killed, those who survived, and those changed forever on April 19, 1995. These shoes were later donated to Cleats for Kids, a nonprofit that equips and empowers kids through sports. The Memorial Kids Marathon has partnered with Cleats for Kids and has outfitted more than 400 runners with new shoes and socks.

Although there was no single official winner, all 13,888 who completed the virtual challenge were deemed winners.

MARATHON PREPARATION WITH BART YASSO While the virtual run was fun, we are excited to run TOGETHER in person in OKLAHOMA CITY MEMORIAL MARATHON | 41

2021 after two and half years apart.

To prepare for our return to the streets, Bart Yasso, known as the Mayor of Running and the retired Runner's World Chief Running Officer, helped kick off training in June. Yasso is the inventor of the Yasso 800s, a marathontraining schedule used by thousands around the world. He is one of the few people to have completed races on all seven continents from the Antarctica Marathon to the Mt. Kilimanjaro Marathon. In 1987, Yasso won the U.S. National Biathlon Long Course Championship and won the Smoky Mountain Marathon in 1998. He has also completed the Ironman five times and the grueling Badwater 146 mile

run through Death Valley.

In addition, he has cycled, unsupported and by himself, across the country twice.

Over a June weekend, Bart led a social and community long run training, both of which introduced portions of the 2021 new race course. The Sunset Social Run began at the Memorial Museum and ended at Social Capitol near the NEW Finish Line in Scissortail Park.

The Community Long Run started and finished at the Memorial and ran portions of the new course during a brisk 5-mile run.

KIDS MARATHON RUN CLUB Bart also helped prepare our younger athletes for the Kids Marathon race.

The Kids Marathon Run Club hosted three different opportunities for kids to log their miles while receiving fun running tips and learning more about Why We Run! Celebrity guests included Kid Governor for Oklahoma Charlotte Anderson and Oklahoma City Thunder mascot Rumble the Bison.

For the first time ever, the race weekend schedule will be split between two days.

The Kids Marathon will take place the Saturday prior to the Marathon, Half Marathon and Relay. We are excited for

this change to allow more participants to run with their kids prior to the rest of the races on Sunday.

WEEKEND SERIES This year we’re making it even easier to participate all weekend long! We are proud to introduce the WHY WE RUN Weekend Series, presented by the INASMUCH Foundation. This event provides an opportunity for runners to double their participation events AND impact! In the Series, runners will start with the 5K on Saturday and the Marathon or Half Marathon on Sunday.

In addition to the event shirt and medal for both races run, participants will also receive a Why We Run Series medal and shirt.

OKLAHOMA STANDARD CHALLENGE The Oklahoma Standard Challenge is back and in-person this year! The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon and the Williams Route 66 Marathon in Tulsa have teamed up to represent the unity between the people in the great state of Oklahoma. Run the Marathon or Half Marathon in Oklahoma City, then run the Marathon or Half Marathon in Tulsa, and participants receive a special commemorative Oklahoma Standard medal at the Williams Route 66

Over the next three years, each medal will highlight one of the three tenets of the #OklahomaStandard – Service, Honor, and Kindness. This year, we focus on Service – on April 19, 1995, Oklahomans united in the face of the devastating Oklahoma City bombing, showing up to serve their community in any way they could. That spirit of generosity still lives in Oklahomans today, and we call it the Oklahoma Standard.

GOVERNOR’S RELAY CHALLENGE For the third year in a row, Governor Kevin Stitt is challenging Oklahomans to beat his Relay team. Any Relay Team that signs up and participates will be automatically entered to compete against the Governor’s relay team. Any team’s overall time to beat Governor Stitt’s relay team will receive an “I Beat the Gov” running shirt that will be mailed to runners after October 3. Thank you to Hobby Lobby for sponsoring!

2. When approaching a photographer on the course, look at the photographer and smile.

3. When crossing the Finish Line, look up and SMILE! Don’t look down to check your watch as you cross the Finish Line or you will be looking down when we snap your Finish Line Photo. Remember you have an official timing chip to record your time.

4. Finishing with a running partner? No problem! Grab their hand as you cross the Finish Line and Candid Color Photography will take a picture of everyone!

5. Continue past the Finish Line area to avoid congestion.

RUNNER SAFETY ON THE COURSE The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon’s goal is to provide a fun and safe event for everyone.

We encourage you to download the Memorial Marathon App to your Android or Apple device before race day and follow our social media and media partners to stay up to date.

Medical Issues There are 15 medical aid stations on Sunday and one on Saturday staffed with some of the best medical professionals in the state along the race course. Each station will be flying a flag of the color corresponding to the heat stress at the time (see chart).

Flag colors will change within 3 minutes of a modification in the heat stress level.

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon asserts that upon entering the event, each runner assumes the responsibility with the potential risks that any marathon presents. It is the runner’s responsibility to list pre-existing medical conditions and an emergency contact on their individual bibs. All runners should be discerning of their own fitness level in their decision to enter the Marathon and associated events. It is strongly advised that all participants cooperate with directives given by Marathon officials should an emergency arise and assist in ensuring the safety of their fellow participants, particularly when the conditions are not ideal.

The OKC Memorial Marathon has adopted the WBGT (Wet Bulb Globe Temperature) index as its standard. High heat and humidity, as measured in accordance with the American College of Sports Medicine recommendations for endurance events, could result in the cancellation of the event.

WBGT was developed because the ordinary temperature alone does not provide a realistic guide to the effects of heat and does not take humidity and heat radiation into consideration.

As the WBGT rises, so do sweating and fluid losses.

With fluid losses come the risk of various heat injuries: heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. It is strongly recommended that all runners slow their pace and reduce their risk of heat stress if conditions

warrant. Hydration and misting stations to cool do not prevent heat stress if your pace is not adjusted.

While runners should increase their fluid intake as the WBGT rises, be careful to avoid excessive water intake and the possibility of overhydrating or hyponatremia. Hyponatremia can cause serious health consequences, including confusion, coma and death.

Additionally, salt in the form of pretzels and/or pickle juice will be available along the last half of the course. Supplemental salt will help prevent cramps.

From your training, you should have a general idea of the amount of fluid you need when running under various conditions of temperature and humidity. The Marathon reserves the right for medical professionals to pull runners from the course if exhibiting signs of physical stress.

Water Stops The OKC Memorial Marathon, in partnership with SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital, offers 22 Water Stops on Sunday and one on Saturday along the course.

There are more than adequate amounts of water to ensure hydration under favorable conditions. If those conditions worsen, additional amounts will be pre-staged and deployed but it should be reasonable to assume that supplies may not be limitless due to logistical constraints entailed in such a distribution effort. Thanks to our partners at Heartland, sanitization stations will be available at water stops.

Race Alteration and Weather Policy Perry Weather will provide tailored forecasts for the course that highlight any weather

concern. These forecasts help race officials plan accordingly and set up the proper contingency plans. Weather updates are available on the Marathon App. If severe weather arises, Perry Weather provides an on-site meteorologist race day to determine its impact on the race. We understand the commitment participants have made in entering the race. However, the decision regarding the cancellation and/ or alterations will be based on safety. If at any time community resources are threatened, we will act to protect them from unnecessary stress.

If weather conditions or other physical conditions present a danger to the participants, the Memorial Marathon officials maintain the right to cancel the race. Less threatening conditions could cause alterations to the course or length of the race to further ensure participant, volunteer and community safety. The conditions will fall under an “Act of God” and will not result in any refunding of any race entry fee or future credits. The staging of an event of this magnitude places a large financial burden on the OKC Memorial Marathon organization prior to the event date. In the event of a forced race cancellation or alteration, it is probable the financial impact of the race would not be any different than if the race were held without compromise.

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon officials, along with city officials, will make decisions regarding the cancellation or alteration of the race. Prior to the race, participants will be informed of weather conditions and how the on-course flag system works.

Race officials will describe

any changes that may be decided as a result of weather or other unsafe conditions. In the case of a course evacuation, Marathon officials, police, emergency management and course marshals will communicate throughout the course, and will direct participants to stay-in-place at shelters along the course to await transportation back to downtown Oklahoma City or away from the dangerous area along the course.

All last minute and up-todate information will be pushed out on the Marathon app, and posted on the Marathon’s webpage, okcMarathon. com, Twitter @okcmarathon, Facebook.com/okcmarathon, oklahoman.com and broadcast on The Franchise 107.7, KFOR News 4 and from all public service areas along the course.

On The Course If runners are not to Mile 20 by noon in the Marathon and mile 10 by noon. in the Half Marathon, they will be bused back to the Finish Line Festival.

This rule was recommended by the Oklahoma City Police Department due to not being able to adequately support the runners along the course.

Following Department of Homeland Security standards for outdoor events, there are no backpacks, vest hydration units, ruck packs, air tanks or anything over the shoulders allowed on runners. Hydration belts or handheld bottles – less than one liter – are allowed.

Drones and scooters of any kind are prohibited.

Runner Recovery Tips We Can All Use

W

hether a seasoned marathoner or someone looking for more casual cardiovascular exercise, when most runners put their mind to a routine, they’re all in. With adrenaline pumping and goals in mind, many runners just want to get started right away and hit the pavement.

However, it can pay to take a breath and make plans first in order to set yourself up not only for the best results but also to preserve your bones and joints.

“When athletes of all types ask me what they can do to avoid injury, I almost always direct them to their activities before they exercise, which can be as much or even more important as what happens during activity or recovery,” said Dr. JT Glomset, orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist with SSM Health Bone & Joint/OSOI. “Some may worry more about injury in obviously high-impact sports, such as football and others, but running can have orthopedic effects either due to acute injury or, unfortunately, long-term wear and tear on bones and joints.”

Dr. Glomset’s practice is focused on all aspects of promoting bone and joint health through surgical and non-surgical solutions. He is also the team physician for professional and scholastic sports teams, helping athletes avoid injury and achieve better outcomes in the event they do become injured.

“In the end, a lot of recovery is about what you do on the front end,” said Kristen Vaughan, who placed first among women in the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon in 2018. “In the beginning, many runners think about setting pace, breaking in their shoes and things like that. When possible, I also like to replicate things l can prior to the marathon,

DURING Pace yourself - Even if adrenaline is pumping at the beginning, hold yourself back in order to access stamina later in the race. Be mindful of your heartrate and increase or decrease speed to accommodate what is comfortable.

Be careful of crowding - Marathons can be very crowded, which can lead to tripping and injuries. Be aware of who is around you so you can swiftly avoid any obstacles.

Check your mindset - The last few miles of a long run can be mentally challenging. Keep your pace steady and comfortable, listen to your body and try to focus on the end goal. such as checking out the course, eating the same breakfast I plan to eat the day of the run and that sort of thing.”

If you have a history of injury or are otherwise concerned about your orthopedic health in any way, talk with your doctor about what warm-up and recovery activities may be best for you. As a general rule, Dr. Glomset recommends incorporating some of the following habits into your running routine to contribute to better post-run recovery.

BEFORE Take it slowly - When training, it may seem easy to add speed or distance, but do it gradually.

Know the course - If possible, review the course before a marathon. Be familiar with where water stops will be, as well as sharp turns, potholes, etc. to prevent falling.

Plan your attire - Don’t only break in your shoes, but also your socks and anything else you might wear for a competitive run – this is not the time to be taken by surprise.

AFTER Refuel - Be sure to consume a meal with healthy proteins, fats and carbohydrates within two hours of a long run.

Deescalate - Even if you plan to take a break from competitive running after finishing a marathon, make plans not to quit “cold turkey.” Be sure to jog for a few days after a major run as a sort of large-scale “cool down” for your bones, joints and muscles.

Stay hydrated - Your body will still be in recovery mode after a significant run, even if the race is mentally behind you, so be sure to keep water intake high.

“In the end, running is a very personal thing, but for many, it’s about fun, health, exercise and meeting goals,” Dr. Glomset said. “There’s no need to be bogged down by all the rules; just make a plan and set yourself up for success so you can get the most out of your run in every way possible.”

I always wait a few days before I do my first post-race run. I only run a few miles at a very easy pace. I don't return to any serious training runs until I'm back to 100%.”

Review a map and check arrival times by platform at realtime.okcstreetcar.com When you arrive on a platform, check the screen for arrival times and/or service notices.
