2023 Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon Event Guide

To understand the essence of our community, start at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. It tells of the attack on April 19, 1995, that killed 168 people and injured hundreds more. It also tells of what came next: a response so overwhelming in its generosity it was soon called the Oklahoma Standard.

WHY WE RUN

As we gear up for the 23rd Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon – we thank you for running to remember. On behalf of the families of those killed, those who survived and those changed forever, thank you for joining us for the 2023 Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon.

As you probably know, we believe the Memorial Marathon is indicative of the journey our City has been on since 1995. Rebuilding, putting lives back together, working on getting healthier and focused on celebrating life all while remembering what our community lost and what we have to do together to keep moving forward.

We hope you will take time to visit the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum during race weekend. As a thank you, if you are participating in any of the races, your race bib gets you free entry. We hope you will come and bring your friends and family and get to know this story or share it with others.

We welcome runners from all 50 states and a dozen different countries. We hope you see the Oklahoma Standard first hand like the visiting rescue teams did in 1995. The acts of Service, Honor and Kindness are the tenets of that Standard the rest of the world watched in awe of in 1995 and now 28 years later it is more important than ever to keep showing the world we can each make a difference.

2

Thanks to the people and staff of the cities of Oklahoma City, Nichols Hills and The Village for allowing us to run the Memorial Marathon on your city streets. The Memorial Marathon is the Memorial’s largest fundraiser as we do not receive any annual appropriations from the federal, state or city governments. This is critical to carrying on our mission.

As you prepare to run this weekend and you see the faces and names of those killed along the course, you will remember Why We Run and thank you for joining us on our journey!

WHY WE RUN WEEKEND SERIES

Double the fun (and the swag)! The Why We Run Weekend Series, presented by Inasmuch Foundation, gives runners the opportunity to run the 5K on Saturday, April 29, and then the Half Marathon or Marathon on Sunday, April 30.

Runners participating in the Why We Run Weekend Series will get a special commemorative Weekend Series medal and shirt in addition to the swag they receive for their individual races. The opportunity to run on both Saturday and Sunday is what keeps our race a celebration of life and a Run to Remember.

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon and the Williams Route 66 Marathon in Tulsa have teamed up again to show the unity between the people in our great state. Run the Marathon or Half Marathon in both races this year on April 30 and November 19, and you’ll receive a special commemorative Oklahoma Standard medal at the Williams Route 66 Marathon Finish Line!

Each year, the medal highlights one of the three tenets of the Oklahoma Standard – Service, Honor, and Kindness. In 2023, our focus is Kindness. The Run to Remember brings together runners and spectators from around the world to honor those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. Classen Blvd – (Mile 21-22) This long stretch on Classen Boulevard from 50th to 18th is a tough straightaway and is an important point mentally for the runners to have support. This is where the Marathon course reunites with the Half Marathon and where you can find a mix between live music and DJs.

Start Line Corrals For Relay Leg 1 Runner Only

Don’t forget your race bib! It is the only way you can enter the Start Line Corral. Your race bib tracks your time and includes a map of the Start Line on the back. What time you need to be in the Start Line Corral will depend on which wave you are in. The Marathon and Relay corral information is:

Opens @ 5:30 a.m.

Relay Start Time

Closes @ 6:20 a.m.

The Start Line is located between 5th and 6th on Harvey in front of the Memorial Museum.

Start 6:30 a.m.

Relay Fuel

Water will be provided at all Water Stops and beginning at Water Stop 3, Mountain Berry Blast POWERADE will be available at each Water Stop along the course to the Finish Line.

GU, in assorted flavors, will be available at Water Stop 12, 17 and 22. Salt in the form of pretzels and/or pickle juice will also be available along the course. If you trained to a particular flavor, we encourage you to bring your own as flavors on the course cannot be guaranteed.

Crossing the Finish Line as a Team

If you would all like to cross the Finish Line together as a team, you may meet back up at SW 3rd and Lee. Each team member must have their bib on and worn visibly on the front as they enter back on the course. When your Leg 5 Relay Runner approaches SW 3rd and Lee, please avoid darting in front of other runners, and then your team may safely enter onto the course and run the rest of the way as a team celebrating your victory at the Finish Line!

Relay Medals

To celebrate your team’s work, you will be awarded a medal at the Finish Line! If only the last Relay Leg Runner crosses the Finish Line, they can accept their teammates’ medals. If the whole team crosses, each individual can grab their medal. Continue walking down the Finish Line into Scissortail Park to enjoy the Finish Line Festival and meet up with family and friends running in other races. The overall winning Relay Team will be given their award at the Finish Line. All other 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place category awards in addition to the Governor’s Relay Challenge shirts, will be shipped within two weeks.

With a push for a healthier Oklahoma, Governor Kevin Stitt teamed up with the Memorial Marathon – challenging relay runners to compete against his own team. All registered relay teams will automatically compete in the Governor’s Relay Challenge. If your team has a better time than the Governor’s relay team, you will receive an “I Beat the Governor” T-shirt that will be mailed to you after the race.

JUMP ON YOUR RELAY SHUTTLES TO GET TO YOUR EXCHANGE

Shuttle buses ARE BACK and will be transporting Relay runners from the Start Line to their respective Exchange Zone and from that Exchange Zone to the Finish Line entrance! First priority for shuttles are to runners with relay bibs. If you are cheering on relay runners, the bus can try to accommodate you, but priority is given to runners. Shuttles will transport continually beginning at the scheduled time below until the streets reopen at that Exchange Zone. NO shuttles will be running between the race and partner hotels.

• Shuttles DO NOT transport between relays. They will only transport from the Start Line to their designated Exchange Zone and from that Exchange Zone to the Finish Line Festival or Relay team meetup.

• Shuttles TO the Exchange Zones from the Start Line will board at NW 5th & Robinson, across from the 9:01 Gate and near the First Church, where they are serving up pancakes on race morning!

• Shuttles returning FROM the Exchange Zones to the Finish Line will drop runners at one of two stops:

1. FINISH LINE ENTRANCE TO MEET UP WITH YOUR TEAM at SW 3rd & Lee (available by bus only) to enter the course to cross the Finish Line to receive medals, and get post-race hydration and their Spark burger! This is THE ONLY way to enter the Finish Line chute.

2. Scissortail Park for the Finish Line Festival. Any runners not getting off to enter the course must exit the bus at Scissortail Park.

• All safety rules applying to the course apply to the shuttles. Check the Marathon app for a list of prohibited items.

• Shuttles begin transporting at the following times and will continue the loops at each Exchange Zone until the streets reopen at that Zone.

Relay Exchange Zone 1: beginning at 5:45 a.m.

Relay Exchange Zone 2: beginning at 6:00 a.m.

Relay Exchange Zone 3: beginning at 6:15 a.m.

Relay Exchange Zone 4: beginning at 6:30 a.m.

ARE YOU TIED TO OUR MISSION?

Whether or not you are participating in one of our races, you can go the extra mile and become Tied To Our Mission by making a donation benefiting the important work of the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum.

When you donate or raise $10 or more, you become Tied to Our Mission and will receive a pair of 2023 commemorative Marathon shoelaces in your race packet. This is our way of saying thank you for your help in sustaining our mission.

We receive no annual funding from the local, state, or federal government. Your gift matters and our future depends on your generosity. Thank you!

HAVE YOU EVER RUNG A PR BELL?

We are excited to partner with the OKC Firefighters once again to give runners the opportunity to ring the personal record or PR Bell. This bell is on the Great Lawn as part of the Memorial Marathon Continental Resources Finish Line Festival. Runners who set a new PR can ring the ceremonial bell – one that was used on a firetruck that responded to the April 19, 1995 bombing, complete with a piece of granite from the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building on its stand. Ring it to celebrate your PR!

SATURDAY, APRIL 29

Start 9:00 a.m.

Start Line Corral

The Kids Marathon Start Line is located between 5th and 6th on Harvey.

• Corrals open at 8:30 a.m. and the Kids Marathon starts at 9 a.m.

• Be lined up no later than 8:45 a.m. to warm up with Rumble, the Kids Marathon Chair Bison, Mayor David Holt and family, announcements and fun!

• To enter the corral, you must have a bib. Load into the corrals from Robinson or Hudson on 6th, 7th, or 8th street.

• Parents with strollers must start in the back of the corrals for the safety of the runners.

Color Group Wave Start

Each runner will be assigned a wave start color group noted on their bib. When you arrive at the Start Line, look for Safety Net Runners holding large signs matching the color of that wave and line up behind them.

Safety Net Runners

A team of Safety Net Runners will run the entire 1.2-mile course with the athletes. They will encourage runners and enforce safety all the way to the Finish Line.

Finish Line

The Kids Marathon will finish at Scissortail Park near SW 7th and Robinson. Kids will be cheered across the Finish Line by popular mascots and be handed a Kids Marathon medal, Chick-fil-A sandwich, jump rope and water. The runners will then be directed to designated locations in the Finishers’ Corral to connect with their parents/guardians/teachers with matching tear tags.

Only runners with bibs will be allowed in the Finish Line Corral. All others will need to stay in the designated location until we can safely connect kids with school groups and parents.

Tear Tag Procedures

Only registered race participants will be allowed on the race course and in the corral. Adults with a tear tag to claim a child are permitted into the Finishers’ Corral. Volunteers in brightly colored shirts and a very visible OKC Police presence will be in place the entire time.

• Each child is issued a bib to wear on race day with a “tear tag” at the bottom with the same number. A parent, guardian, or teacher will be required to provide the matching tag for the child to leave the Kids Finisher Corral area.

ON THE COURSE RUNNER SAFETY

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon’s goal is to provide a fun and safe event for everyone. We encourage you to download the Memorial Marathon App to your Android or Apple device before Race Weekend and follow our social media and media partners to stay up to date, and login and allow notifications.

Medical Issues

There are 15 medical aid stations on Sunday and one on Saturday staffed with some of the best medical professionals in the state along the race course. Each station will be flying a flag of the color corresponding to the heat stress at the time (see chart). Flag colors will change within 3 minutes of a modification in the heat stress level.

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon asserts that upon entering the event, each runner assumes the responsibility with the potential risks that any marathon presents. It is the runner’s responsibility to list preexisting medical conditions and an emergency contact on their individual bibs. All runners should be discerning of their own fitness level in their decision to enter the Marathon and associated events. It is strongly advised that all participants cooperate with

directives given by Marathon officials should an emergency arise and assist in ensuring the safety of their fellow participants, particularly when the conditions are not ideal.

The OKC Memorial Marathon has adopted the WBGT (Wet Bulb Globe Temperature) index as its standard. High heat and humidity, as measured in accordance with the American College of Sports Medicine recommendations for endurance events, could result in the cancellation of the event. WBGT was developed because the ordinary temperature alone does not provide a realistic guide to the effects of heat and does not take humidity and heat radiation into consideration.

As the WBGT rises, so do sweating and fluid losses. With fluid losses come the risk of various heat injuries: heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. It is strongly recommended that all runners slow their pace and reduce their risk of heat stress if conditions warrant. Hydration stations do not prevent heat stress if your pace is not adjusted.

While runners should increase their fluid intake as the WBGT rises, be careful to avoid excessive water intake and the possibility of overhydrating or hyponatremia. Hyponatremia can cause serious health consequences, including confusion, coma and death. Additionally, salt in the form of pretzels and/or pickle juice will be available along the last half of the course. Supplemental salt will help prevent cramps.

From your training, you should have a general idea of the amount of fluid you need when running under various conditions of temperature and humidity. The Marathon reserves the right for medical professionals to pull runners from the course if exhibiting signs of physical stress.

Water Stops

The OKC Memorial Marathon, in partnership with SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital, offers 22 Water Stops on Sunday and two on Saturday along the course. There are more than adequate amounts of water to ensure hydration under favorable conditions. If those conditions worsen, additional amounts will be pre-staged and deployed but it should be reasonable to assume that supplies may not be limitless due to logistical constraints entailed in such a distribution effort. Thanks to our partners at Heartland, sanitization stations will be available at Water Stops.

Race Alteration and Weather Policy

Perry Weather will provide tailored forecasts for the course that highlight any weather concern. These forecasts help race officials plan accordingly and set up the proper contingency plans. Weather updates are available on the Marathon App.

If severe weather arises, Perry Weather provides an on-site meteorologist during Race Weekend to determine its impact on the race. We understand the commitment participants have made in entering the race. However, the decision regarding the cancellation and/or alterations will be based on safety. If at any time community resources are threatened, we will act to protect them from unnecessary stress.

If weather conditions or other physical conditions present a danger to the participants, the Memorial Marathon officials maintain the right to cancel the race. Less threatening conditions could cause alterations to the course or length of the race to further ensure participant, volunteer and community safety. The conditions will fall under an “Act of God” and will not result in any refunding of any race entry fee or future credits. The staging of an event of this magnitude places a large financial burden on the OKC Memorial Marathon organization prior to the event date. In the event of a forced race cancellation or alteration, it is probable the financial impact of the race would not be any different than if the race were held without compromise.

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon officials, along with city officials, will make decisions regarding the cancellation or alteration of the race. Prior to the race, participants will be informed of weather conditions and how the on-course flag system works. Race officials will describe any changes that may be decided as a result of weather or other unsafe conditions. In the case of a course evacuation, Marathon officials, police, emergency management and course marshals will communicate throughout the course, and will direct participants to stay-in-place at shelters along the course to await transportation back to downtown Oklahoma City or away from the dangerous area along the course.

All last-minute and up-to-date information will be pushed out on the Marathon App, and posted on the Marathon’s site, okcMarathon.com, Twitter @okcmarathon, Facebook.com/okcmarathon, oklahoman.com and broadcast on The Franchise 107.7, KWTV Channel 9 and from all public service areas along the course.

SEE SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING

Participant safety is of the upmost concern for the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. Thanks to the hard work of Marathon Staff, Chairmen, Volunteers, and Law Enforcement, there is a detailed security plan for all race courses.

Security is everyone’s responsibility, whether you’re a runner, spectator, or volunteer. If you See Something, Say Something. Follow the steps below to report any suspicious behavior:

1. Do not hesitate. Call 9-1-1 first, making sure you speak calmly while describing the details in full.

2. Notify a law enforcement officer or race official –they are stationed all along the course – after calling 9-1-1. Following Department of Homeland Security standards for outdoor events, items prohibited at the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon are backpacks, hydration vests, ruck packs, or anything over-theshoulder are not allowed on buses, courses, or at the Start or Finish Line. Running belts, handheld water bottles, or clip-on water bottles less than one liter are allowed for you to use in these areas. Scooters, drones, dogs and oversized costumes are also not allowed on the course. Firefighters are allowed air tanks pre-approved by the OKC bomb squad team.

• No bags are allowed on the Race Course.

• Only the clear Gear Check bags provided to participants at race packet will be accepted at the Marathon Gear Check trailers. Bags will be checked at Gear Check Trailers located at 6th & Hudson or 6th & Robinson at the Start Line and able to be picked up at the Finish Line on Oklahoma City Boulevard.

• Be sure to never leave a bag unattended as it could result in the closing of the race or a certain portion of the course.

• Please do your part and help us ensure the safety of runners, spectators and volunteers by taking responsibility for your belongings.

• Report any unattended bags or suspicious activity or item to a law enforcement officer or race official.

We are grateful to law enforcement and first responders from the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, OKC Police Department, OKC Fire Department, OKC Emergency Management, OKC Public Works Department, Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, FBI, Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security, Federal Protective Services, OU Health Sciences Center, city of OKC, Nichols Hills and the city of The Village for securing our course race weekend. A special thanks to EMSA, and all other EMS personnel who help provide medical treatment to the runners, spectators, and volunteers.

Thank you for running the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon and have a fun, safe run. As always, if you See Something, Say Something.

Report suspicious activity to local law enforcement or call 9-1-1 in case of emergency.
