Great People Make Favorite Places BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place. ◆

June Staff Member of the Month Kermith Hinson, Line Cook We congratulate our Line Cook Kermith on being named June Staff Member of the Month! Since he began working at the Club two years ago, Kermith has continuously impressed our Culinary Team with his commitment to BCC as he drives every day to work from Delaware and taking the lead on the line! Our Executive Chef Jallet said that Kermith is just a good person with the heart of a lion and his sense of humor is very infectious! Additionally, he is always positive and has a great attitude which is terrific for team morale. Way to go, Kermith, on this well-deserved award!

Exceptional Leadership Award Matthew Moore, Pool Café Supervisor Michael Wilkinson, Assistant Banquet Chef We congratulate Matthew and Chef Michael for receiving the Exceptional Leadership Award! Matthew was promoted from within to run the Food and Beverage operations at the Pool this season. He worked at the Pool Café in past summers and in À la Carte and Banquets during the off-season months. Matthew is humble, trustworthy, and guides by example. He delegates responsibilities well and helps those around him to succeed! Along with helping in Banquets, Michael has taken the lead at the Pool Café for three seasons. Despite the staff shortage due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Michael has continued to thrive as a natural-born leader. Executive Chef Jallet predicts a bright future for him in the culinary world! Thank you, Matthew and Michael, for all your hard work!

Simple Truth Award Cathy Wagner, Director of Horticulture We congratulate Cathy for receiving the Simple Truth Award! While Cathy was working, she spotted a wounded and disoriented Juvenile Red-Tailed Hawk hanging out on the ledge behind the tennis courts. She immediately called around to find out how best to relocate it or bring it in for rehab. With the help of our East Course Assistant Superintendent Matt and our West Course Assistant Superintendent Mark, Cathy was able to capture the bird humanely. The rescue was necessary for the bird’s safety and the ladies’ safety who were nearby playing tennis. Cathy dropped it off at a local wildlife center where they accepted the bird into their care for monitoring until it is well enough to release. Thank you, Cathy, for ensuring a safe place for the bird and our members! 1

Welcome Back to Roland Park! As we embark on a new chapter with the expansion of our Five Farms clubhouse as Phase 1 of the Club's Lifestyle Facilities Master Plan, we are happy to finally welcome the membership back to our Roland Park campus beginning Friday, September 10. After nearly 17 months at Five Farms, our Roland Park clubhouse will once again come alive with À la Carte dining, Club events, and more! Roland Park will also be getting a few cosmetic updates of its own. The Maryland, Founders, and Baltimore Rooms will be revitalized with new lighting, carpeting, and paint. Traditional fall events such as Cars, Coffee, & Crepes, Boo Fest (Fall Fest), and the Fall Planters Workshop will have a new backdrop of our beautiful Roland Park campus. We have also brought a little piece of the quintessential Five Farms experience to Roland Park by bringing the Adirondack Experience to our North Lawn!

Although the Five Farms clubhouse will be under construction, our Golf, Fitness & Wellness, and Racquets facilities will be fully operational with minor disturbances due to construction. Our Culinary and Food & Beverage teams have also created a new casual À la Carte dining experience called Petite Farms Bistro at the Pool Complex, Tuesdays through Sundays. See page 4 for more information on Petite Farms Bistro. We look forward to seeing you at Roland Park! ◆

MASK MANDATE REMINDER On Monday, August 9, the mask mandate was reinstated for Baltimore City. At our Roland Park campus, members, guests, and staff will be required to wear a mask at all times while indoors when not seated and consuming food or beverages, regardless of your vaccination status. This includes while using our Fitness and Squash facilities. Please continue to follow guidance given by the CDC: • If you are fully vaccinated, you can participate in many of the activities that you did before the pandemic • To maximize protection from the Delta variant and prevent possibly spreading it to others, wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of substantial or high transmission • Wearing a mask is most important if you have a weakened immune system or, because of your age or an underlying medical condition, you are at increased risk for severe disease, or if someone in your household has a weakened immune system, is at increased risk for severe 2

disease, or is unvaccinated. If this applies to you or your household, you might choose to wear a mask regardless of the level of transmission in your area • You should continue to wear a mask where required by laws, rules, regulations, or local guidance If you have tested positive for COVID-19, or have been directly exposed to someone who has tested positive, please contact General Manager/COO Kent Johnson at 410.554.8002 (this information will be kept confidential).

ARCHIVES

DONATE TO THE BCC ARCHIVES As members of Baltimore Country Club, we have the privilege of being a part of a organization with rich history. One of the many initiatives of the Archive Committee is to digitally scan archival items around both clubhouses including the Roland Park vault. These items include early Board minutes, golf course architecture, photos, and other BCC memorabilia. The Archive Committee would like to express their appreciation to Mr. Colnitis who donated this photo of the Roland Park Golf Course dating back to 1920. If you would like to donate originals photos, or allow the Archive Committee to scan your photos, please contact Archive Committee Chairman Don Hoelting at dhoelting@mac.com or Assistant General Manager Michael Nyerges at mnyerges@bcc1898.com. The Committee is specifically looking for photos taken between the 1950s and 1990s.

FITNESS & WELLNESS

GOLFFIT TRAINING TIPS

with Janine Rich, Director of Fitness & Wellness, TPI Certified Level 1 & Level 2 Have you ever wondered why you aren’t getting more distance or speed on your club? Strength training exercises improve the swing, but without flexibility you will not have the range of motion to properly implement any power gains you get from that added strength. Additionally, if you don’t have good balance (which is basically control through your ankles, hips and torso) it prevents you from using 100% of your swing power and destroys your accuracy. Here’s an exercise to help increase club head speed:

HALF KNEELING CHOP

This exercise combines lower body stability and core strength, while improving rotation and creates resistance through the thorac (ribcage).

Guidelines: • Use a weight that lets you perform 8-12 reps without sacrificing form • Get into a 90/90 half kneeling position with the outside leg forward and the inside knee down • Grab the cable handle with the inside hand holding and outside hand over top • Staying tall in your posture and stable in lower body, pull the cable across the body in a chop motion (2 seconds rep), hold, then return under tension (4 seconds rep) to initial position. Repeat on the opposite side

FIT & WELL WITH MARISSA You are invited to try an Intro to Fitness & Wellness package with Personal Coach Marissa to help you strengthen, stretch, and relax your body and mind. This package gives you a teaser of all the programs Marissa offers at BCC. Introductory Fee: $115 (One-time only) The package includes: • One 30-minute Personal Training session • One 30-minute dynamic stretch or Vinyasa Yoga session • One 30-minute Thai Yoga Massage session To register for this intro package, email Personal Coach and Thai Yoga Massage Practitioner Marissa Loforte at mloforte@bcc1898.com 9

GOLF

TIPS FROM THE PRO Preparing for Competition Sure, you have a good range game, and you may even play well in your Saturday game against your friends. But does your game perform under the pressure of competition? Whether you signed up to compete in the Member-Guest Tournament, Club Championship, corporate scramble, or an LPGA event, it’s imperative you prepare your mental game for tournament golf. Tournament play poses a different kind of pressure than practice play. You are now expected to hit good shots and you only get one swing to do it—no breakfast balls, no gimmes. This is a learned skill, managing what’s happening in your head and allowing you to play your best game when the pressure is on.

Ashley's List of Competition Do's Notice, how I didn’t include a list of Don'ts? To toughen up your mental fitness on the course, you have to remove the negative thoughts that creep into your mind. They're still there lingering, but the trick is to replace them with positive thoughts.

PREPARE Make a game plan, visualize your game plan, commit to your game plan, and then execute your game plan. Your game plan may be as simple as, “swing easy on the tee, fairways are more important than distance,” or you might have a plan from tee to green—whatever will help you play your best game is the right plan for you.

TAKE NOTES Take notes about how far to hit it off the tee and what your target should be – a lot of people will take notes about what clubs to use; try to avoid that, because conditions change (as do tee and hole locations). This small change will make your game and mentality more resilient.

IDENTIFY THE BEST PLACE TO MISS

DROP YOUR BALL WHERE IT WILL LAND

Give yourself room for error – the best pros in the world will tell you their game improved when they got better at “missing” well. For example, if short left is the easiest place to get up and down and you’re between clubs – take the shorter club and aim left of the pin.

Let’s say you have an errant tee shot in your practice round. If the swing was uncharacteristic, hit another. Visualize the ball going in the fairway and remember it. If you can’t find the fairway in the practice round, drop in the fairway. Don’t make the course hard during the practice round–make it easy and have confidence going into the first round knowing you can score.

PRACTICE THE RIGHT THINGS Work on the shots you are likely to have (bump and runs, short side chips, bunker shots, lag putts from areas of the green you are likely to be from your approach to certain pins). As fun as it is to work on hitting a flop shot 30 feet in the air and landing it ten feet from you, focus on the things that will help you most often.

STICK TO YOUR GAME PLAN 1. Have confidence in your ability and golf swing 2. Play calm and relaxed marathon golf 3. When in trouble, get out of trouble– bogeys are okay 4. Ignore distractions (slow play, noisy players). You have control over how those things impact your game

And finally, remember to have fun! Celebrate the great shots and learn from the not-so-great ones. Set realistic expectations and do your best to meet or exceed them. The most important thing is to get out there. Competition at all levels can be fun and rewarding. ◆

GROUNDS

GREENKEEPER'S UPDATE One of the Driving Range renovation goals was to increase the Golf House range tee by over 40%. Not only were we successful, but we managed to increase the amount of tee surface by nearly 70% and increase the size of the all-weather mat by almost 40%. On the Back Range, an enhanced approach shot experience has been created with target greens. Please be mindful that the target greens are not constructed to any green construction specifications, as this was not included in this project’s scope. The greens will be sodded with a grass called Innovation Zoysiagrass which will offer a distinctly different look and contrast with the surrounding bermudagrass. The target greens will be accompanied by bunkers to enhance the approach shot experience. However, these are constructed from stone screenings to allow our Golf Services Team to pick up balls from the Range with the picker. Please don’t be alarmed when you see the machine driving through bunkers, as they were specifically designed with this intention. Although we were satisfied with the performance of the Tahoma 31 bermudagrass (a leading bermudagrass variety), on the Back Range tees for the last two years, we are always open to trying new varieties as they enter the market. On our continual search to find a bermudagrass variety that meets our short and long term goals, we have sodded the range tees and field with Iron Cutter bermudagrass. Developed from the wind-swept turfgrass plots of Enid, Oklahoma, Iron Cutter results from a 10-year research and breeding partnership from the legendary turf and forage breeder Dr. Charles Taliaferro and Mountain View Seeds. Iron Cutter emerged as an ideal choice for turf managers seeking better all-around consistency and the highest turfgrass quality across the entire reach of bermudagrass’s growing zones. This bermudagrass variety exhibits excellent cold tolerance, extraordinarily dense and refined texture, traffic tolerance (ball picker), and the highest ratings for spring green-up.

Driving Range renovation project construction completed in August 2021

With work on the Driving Range wrapped up, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank our Team, led by West Course Superintendent Justin Gladhill and Assistant Superintendent Mark Jones, for the work accomplished on the Driving Range and West Course over the summer months. Their dedication to improving the facilities and conditioning has been remarkable‒considering we still had to manage and maintain the West Course during the most stressful time of the season while also being short-staffed.

Justin Gladhill West Course Superintendent

Mark Jones Assistant Superintendent

Finally, we sincerely thank you for your patience while we completed the Driving Range renovation and the work on selected tees throughout the West Course. ◆

Tim Kennelly, CGCS Head Greenkeeper

DID YOU NOTICE? As you play holes #1 and #2 East, you may have noticed what looks like burn spots on the playing areas. These are the result of the annual fireworks show from the Club in early July. There is a small sulfur pellet that is part of the explosive device (firework) that breaks down over time in the ground. Because it’s composed of sulfur, it has a very low pH and this reaction causes injury to the turf. Areas on the green are generally plugged out while the area recover over time.

RACQUETS

TENNIS DOUBLES TIPS

Elevate your doubles game with these tips from Seasonal Tennis Professional Chris Harradine! Take Over the Net If you can take over the net consistently in a doubles match, you will put pressure on your opponent. Hit the Ball to the Net Player’s Feet It is much more difficult to hit a good volley from down low by your feet or ankles than a volley up high at your chest or shoulders. They will usually miss the shot or pop the ball up. Attack the Middle of the Court

“Down the middle solves the riddle” This is a great doubles strategy, especially if both opponents are at the net. There are several advantages you get from attacking the middle of the court in doubles. Contact Director of Racquets Gavin Leon at gleon@bcc1898.com if you are interested in taking lessons or would like more information on upcoming clinics and events.
