DINING GUIDELINES &

We understand and appreciate that the most popular time to dine is between the hours of 6:00pm and 7:30pm; however, like “pace of play” on the golf course and in free-standing restaurants, we have to pace the number of reservations over the evening, including Grab & Go orders, to ensure an exceptional À la Carte dining experience for all members and guests.

Reservations are always highly recommended as they allow our management team to better plan for busy days and periods of high volumes. While “walk-ins” are welcome, you may be required to wait for a table. Also, due to the increased demand from all members, we ask you to be aware of your dining time so the staff may “turn” your table to allow other members to dine. Our team thrives on fulfilling the requests of our members and seeks to deliver an exceptional experience for you and your guests. Please take a moment to review our guidelines.

RESERVATIONS & DINING LOCATIONS

▶ Dining reservations are available in the following areas:

• Indoor: 1924 Grille & Elm Room

• Outdoor: Adirondack Porch, Grille Porch, Elm Porch, Tilly Porch

▶ Walk-In Only Areas: Adirondack Bar & Trophy Bar

• Tables will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. These dining areas are not reservable

▶ Reservations are recommended (reservations open ten days in advance)

▶ Reservation times are the party’s expected seating time. The reserving party must be present for seating. A reservation may be held for no more than 15 minutes. A party who loses their reservation may opt-in to the waitlist. Service for parties not adhering to the reservation timeline may also result in delayed service

▶ Members who “walk in” must be ready to be seated when their name is called. If the member is not present, the table is forfeited to the next party in line. During periods of high volume, walk-in diners may experience extended wait times

▶ On our busiest nights, when dining times must be enforced to accommodate the membership, bar and soft seating areas for cocktailing before and after dinner will be available in the Adirondack Bar, Trophy Bar, Oak Room, and Rooftop Terrace

▶ The Club reserves the right to enforce a two-hour dining limit during busy periods to accommodate as many members as possible. The Club will make every effort to advise you if there is a “turn” at your table following your reservation

▶ To expedite service and ensure consistency and quality:

• Parties of 13 or more must: Be approved by a Food & Beverage Manager and will be split into two or more tables OR reserve a private space through our Events Department

Grab & Go is available on the BCC mobile app, the Club website, or at one of the kiosks conveniently located at the Trophy Bar and Adirondack Bar.

FAMILY DINING

▶ All ages are permitted to dine in the 1924 Grille, Elm Room, and outdoor porches

▶ Ages 13 and up are permitted to dine in the Adirondack Bar and Trophy Bar. Children ages 12 and under are permitted in these dining areas on Sundays only

▶ Only adults ages 21 and up are permitted to sit at any bar or access the Rooftop Terrace

▶ Parents and Guardians are responsible for the supervision and proper behavior of their children at all times. Members cannot be responsible for the unsupervised children of other members. In the event that a child (or children) is misbehaving, you may be approached by a member of the Club’s staff and asked to address the behavior

SHOE SERVICE

In the Men’s Golf Locker Room at Five Farms, you'll find the Attendant Room, which is open every day from 7:00am to 9:00pm and is complimentary for all members and in-house guests. We offer cleaning and polishing services for dress shoes, casual shoes, and golf footwear. Additionally, we have white, black, and brown shoelaces available for purchase. If you need spike replacement, it's available for a fee of $15. You can drop off your shoes for same-day service as long as it's before 7:00pm.

GUEST LOCKERS

The Men’s Golf Locker Room offers Guest Lockers for any members hosting a guest. Due to low availability and high demand, please reach out to Clubhouse Services Manager Aidan Dougherty at adougherty@bcc1898.com to reserve.

TOWELS

As a reminder, bath towels can be found in the shower room and in each locker wing. Used towels should be placed in the brown woven baskets located throughout the Locker Room. Please do not throw away or take home any towels.

CIGARS & BEVERAGES

If you would like to purchase a cigar or beverage, please ask a Locker Room Attendant to assist you in the process. Please have your selection and member number ready.

HATS

We kindly remind everyone that hats are not to be worn inside the clubhouse, which includes the Locker Room.

While cellphones are permitted within the locker room, photography is strictly prohibited. If you need to use your cellphone for calls, texting, or other non-photographic/ videographic purposes, please feel free to do so discreetly and respectfully.

MEET AIDAN DOUGHERTY

Aidan is our Clubhouse Services Manager who oversees Housekeeping, Valet, Locker Rooms, Laundry, the Welcome House, and internal transportation. He began at BCC in 2017 as a Bag Room Attendant. In 2020, after graduating from college, he was promoted to Clubhouse Services Manager, and has been helping the Club run smoothly ever since!

SPRING CLEANING FOR YOUR NUTRITION

Transitioning from winter into spring can seem quite dramatic, outside in nature as well as inside our bodies. Spring is all about new beginnings, yet our bodies are tired and sluggish due to winter’s cold days and long nights. Luckily, we can turn to Ayurveda, which is the sister science to yoga, for guidance. One of the core principles of Ayurveda is our energy mirrors the energy of the earth. Springtime creates an abundance of water—the earth is heavy with melting snow and spring showers. Kapha, which flourishes in water, is the Ayurvedic dosha (bio-elemental energy) that is dominant in the spring. When Kapha becomes excessive in nature, your body may feel heavy, sluggish, swollen, cold, sleepy, dull, or depressed. We can balance the strong spring Kapha influence by following simple, intuitive Ayurvedic dietary advice.

LIGHTEN UP. Slowly transition from winter’s thick, heavy foods to a lighter fare. Eat more veggies, less meat, and get protein from beans and legumes.

PURIFY & RENEW. In Ayurveda, juice cleanses are not encouraged. Instead, slowly add more cleansing veggies, focusing on dark leafy greens such as kale, spinach, collards, etc. Eating your vegetables lightly steamed will help cleanse and purify. Adding lemon juice to your water will also aid in detoxification.

SEEK WARMTH. Avoid cold and hot extremes. Just as we transition from cold to hot in the spring, transition to a warm to neutral temperature diet.

These are all general guidelines and should be considered as a starting point for changing your diet in the spring. Remember, what we eat has a huge influence on how we feel. Take some time to read more about Ayurvedic cooking with the seasons.

YOUR SUCCESS IS OUR SUCCESS

About six years ago, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. BCC's Fitness & Wellness Team has been amazing as I work to mitigate progression. Janine and her team can help any member get more out of golf, racquets, or any activity they desire, but I have learned over the last four years, they can also help with Parkinson's.

Over the last five months, I have been doing Thai Yoga Bodywork with Lainey Baer. The increased flexibility and better mind-body connections have been extremely helpful and relaxing. Lainey has worked with me to improve movement where I need it most. Parkinson's has affected the left side of my body. She took the extra time to create yoga videos that focus on movement in the

abductors, feet, and hips. These are all areas that I can no longer take for granted. I have been using these videos for several months and have gained more mobility and flexibility. My weekly sessions with Lainey give me the opportunity to check for correct posture and get the full benefits of Thai Yoga Bodywork.

I am now 70 years old and plan to stay active for a long time. Lainey, with her expertise in yoga, is a major part of my mitigation plan. I feel fortunate to have access to talented people at BCC like Lainey!

MEMORIAL DAY MURPH CHALLENGE '24

Join us at BCC this Memorial Day for a workout like no other! Honor our fallen heroes while pushing your limits in the Murph challenge. Designed to pay tribute to Lt. Michael P. Murphy—who this workout is named after—and all who made the ultimate sacrifice. This event promises both physical challenge and heartfelt remembrance. Let's come together as a community to honor our heroes and celebrate their legacy. Don't miss this opportunity to sweat, honor, and remember. Register now and be part of something truly special. Members will have the option to complete the standard Murph workout or a variation of the workout which will have modifications! All exercise number totals will be broken down into rounds and performed circuit style until the total number or max time allotted is reached. $10 per Person (Includes refueling refreshments following exercise)

Come join Personal Coach & Yoga Instructor Jenna for a special post-Mother's Day treat. This yoga flow is specifically tailored for moms, who consistently give their selfless love and care to others, allowing them to dedicate an hour of self-care just for themselves. Jenna will guide everyone through an all-levels power flow, followed by enjoying a healthy sweet treat together. Please be sure to bring your yoga mat and a water bottle.

HOW THE LETTER " y " CAN IMPROVE YOUR BALL STRIKING

Do you struggle to make consistent contact with your irons? Do you hit more fat and thin shots than solid ones? If so, I have a very simple drill that can improve your contact in a very short time.

Most players have difficulty hitting solid iron shots because they don’t have a clear idea what a good impact position looks and feels like. I often ask my students to show me how their body, arms, and club should look at impact, and I have seen some puzzled looks and interesting positions over the years. The main components of a solid impact position I try to get my players to understand and feel are the following: pressure/weight on a solidly posted lead leg, hips slightly open to the target, shoulders relatively square (parallel to the toe-line and target-line) and last, but not least, forward shaft lean. These elements come together to produce a downward angle of attack on the golf ball with our low point of the swing arc in front of the ball. All great ball strikers do this, and you can too.

One of my favorite drills is to hit balls while starting in my impact position. To do this, first start with a shorter iron like a pitching wedge or a 9 iron. You can use up to a 7 iron but I wouldn’t recommend going with less loft than that to start. Start in your normal address position, and then move into your impact position by shifting your weight/lead hip onto your lead foot (closest to your target), open your hips slightly, and move the handle of the club in front of the ball.

At this point, if you were to look into a mirror, your arms and club shaft will have formed a lower case “y” where the lead arm and club shaft will be in a straight line and the right arm will complete the upper portion of the “y.” Now, you are now ready to make some small swings while making sure you stay posted on

your lead leg. Feel the shoulders rotate to put the arms and club in motion and start by just swinging the club from waist high on the backswing to waist high on the follow through. Start slow and gradually build your speed and length of swing as long as the contact remains solid. Before you know it, you will be hitting more and more solid shots at your target as a result of your improved impact position.

THE CADDIE CORNER

In last month's Caddie Corner, I mentioned one of the initiatives for this year's Caddie Committee: mentoring our youth caddies, who are in grades 8th through 12th. This involves helping them either obtain the Evans Scholarship or develop the valuable core values that caddying instills. However, considering we have over 40 youth caddies and only eight Committee members, it's clear we need more support to offer these young men and women a meaningful mentorship experience. To ensure each youth caddie has a mentor, we'll need an additional 14 mentors to join our Committee members in this initiative.

We're looking for mentors who are enthusiastic about the Caddie Program, fully supportive of their mentees' goals, and willing to embrace their responsibilities. These responsibilities include ensuring that each youth caddie secures two assignments (loops) per month, accompanying them whenever possible throughout the season, and providing monthly progress reports to the Caddie Committee and myself. If you're passionate about the idea that taking a caddie can change lives and you have the time to commit, please get in touch with me at gjones@bcc1898.com, and I'll forward your name to the Caddie Committee. If you're unable to mentor at this time, we completely understand, and we appreciate any time you can dedicate to taking a youth caddie this season.

To maintain a strong caddie program, we rely on experienced college-age and adult caddies to support us during months like April/May and September/October when our youth caddies

are in school during the week. We value the expertise they contribute to the program, whether it's by assisting during our start-of-season orientations for new youth caddies or providing guidance on the course throughout the season. We also ask for your support for our returning Evans Scholars, who will be participating as much as their schedules allow.

FEEDBACK IS KEY

When you take a caddie this season, we kindly request that you fill out one of the Caddie Evaluation cards, which will be available at a designated area after you finish your round. You can complete the perforated card by placing the feedback portion in the designated box and giving the payment portion to your caddie. Here is a sample of the card, outlining the rating areas for each level of caddie. This process allows us to offer constructive feedback to our caddies and support their progression from one level to the next.

THE MARYLAND CUP

The Maryland Cup, the Club’s largest and most valuable sterling silver treasure, symbolizes the Golden Age of Golf at Baltimore Country Club. It was commissioned in 1910 by BCC members and golf enthusiasts Evertt E. Jackson and Richard N. Jackson who owned the E.E. Jackson Lumber Company. e company was founded by their father, Elihu Emory Jackson (18391907). Elihu E. Jackson was Maryland’s 41st Governor. e Cup, with a raised BCC logo on one side and a relief of the rst clubhouse on the other, was donated in his remembrance. During the rst third of the 20th Century, except for the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open, high level amateur tournaments were few and far between. Well known clubs with championship 18 hole golf courses stepped in to ll the void. e inaugural Maryland Cup (billed as a warm-up for the U.S. Amateur) was held on the Club’s Roland Park course in the summer of 1911. Invitations were sent to the illustrious amateurs of the era. In 1926, the Cup was moved to Tillinghast’s Five Farms (East).

Many of golf’s all-time great amateurs, including eight U.S. Amateur champions (Bill Fownes, Francis Ouimet, Jesse Sweetser, Chick Evans, Jess Gilford, Max Marsden, Harold Hilton, Jerry Travers and his brother Walter), played in the Maryland Cup. But no American golfer dominated the Maryland Cup quite

like BCC’s own B. Warren Cockran. He won ve times (once defeating Francis Ouimet, the Father of Amateur Golf in America) and was a three time nalist.

Benjamin Warren Cockran learned to play golf, as a youngster, at Baltimore Country Club. He was a four year star on Princeton’s golf team. A er graduating from Harvard Law in 1910, he returned to Baltimore and founded an Investment Company. In 1913, Cockran was listed as the 4th best amateur in the United States. He won three Maryland State Amateur Championships, the 1922 Maryland Open, two Middle Atlantic Golf Championships and two Maryland Senior Amateur Championships. A member of the Maryland Golf Hall of Fame and Maryland Athletic Hall of Fame, Warren Cockran amassed more than 26 regional titles. When he passed away on August 14, 1963, at the age of 76, he was venerated as the King of Golf in Maryland for more than twenty years. On May 26, 1952, he gi ed the trophy to Baltimore Country Club in gratitude for the Club’s contribution to the advancement of Golf in America.

GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE

April began with four straight days of rain and rainfall totals that equaled the monthly average of 3.39" since 1871. This follows an interesting winter , and early spring as we have received 20.25" of rain since December, which is more than 9" more than our annual average, again since records started being kept in 1871. This abnormality can be attributed to the strong El Niño weather pattern, which brought above-average temperatures and moisture throughout the season.

Furthermore, the anticipated excess snowfall failed to materialize, with only nearly 10" received compared to the annual average of 22". Many storms during this past winter and early spring were accompanied by high winds, resulting in significant amounts of sticks and debris scattered across the property after each weather event. Cleanup of this debris will persist throughout the early spring. Although weather delays hindered us from reaching our 100% installation goal, we completed the drainage work on #4 East work this spring with an additional 3,946' of drainage piping being installed. This brings our total of 4.79 miles of drainage pipe being installed, out of the over 15 miles in the plan. Based on the recent rain events proceeding with the drainage work, we are pleased with the progress made and confident that the area will substantially improve during high-volume rain events.

Also, as you play #4 East, you’ll notice we have expanded the use of a material called Traqmatz at the end of the cart path. Last year, this material demonstrated favorable outcomes by mitigating wear damage caused by carts and maintenance traffic along pathways. We plan to extend its application to other areas this season.

As the rain subsides this month, our goal as we dry out is to tackle several tasks in preparation for the upcoming season.

These tasks include:

1. Inspect all sand bunkers on each course to ensure a uniform minimum depth of 4" of sand in each bunker. So far, we have already installed 257 tons of sand between both courses, with more to come.

2. Continue to sod areas along cart paths where thinning has occurred due to traffic.

3. Fill divots on tees and fairways (excluding West tees) with a soil mixture comprising 60% sand, 20% soil, and 20% peat moss. We also incorporate seed into this mix, which consists of a blend of creeping red fescue and chewings fine fescue instead of bentgrass. This approach offers several advantages: fine fescue germinates more rapidly than creeping bentgrass and provides better playability when placed in the rough. Creeping bentgrass tends to become a difficult-to-control weed in the rough, forming tangled, matted turf at rough height that is challenging to manage and play with.

As a reminder, East Course aeration is scheduled for April 30 through May 2. We will be pulling small 1/8" cores followed by a light application of sand topdressing on the greens. Tees will be deep tined aerated with core aeration to follow. In addition, we will be verticutting fairways while we are closed.

SQUASH TOURNAMENT

BCC welcomed the University Club of DC (UCDC) on Saturday, March 23 for the second year of matches, fostering a spirit of friendly competition and camaraderie. Despite last year's loss to UCDC at their club, BCC embraced the challenge with enthusiasm. Following a series of closely contested matches, BCC finished with a 4-5 match scoreline. The final match, featuring Clark Dowling versus Zachary Hollander, was particularly thrilling, with the outcome uncertain until the end. Although BCC was not victorious, it was certainly an event to remember!

We extend heartfelt thank you to our members for their dedication and to all those who came to show their support.
