A HARD SELTZER

Summer

We’re looking forward to kicking off the summer at our favorite spots at BCC. Whether it’s the pool, the golf course, or the Adirondacks, you’ll see plenty of members enjoying hard seltzers around you. In 2018 when the hard seltzer trend truly got started, sales were only at $400,000. In 2019, sales were at $1.6 billion. It is projected that this year sales will have a 270% increase from last year to reach $4.3 billion! White Claw and Truly are the top leading brands, which accounts for 90% of the market. Popular beer brands like Bud Light and Corona both have recently rolled out hard seltzers to compete in the market.

Personal Reflections from the Archives

between the evergreens beside us, it hit me…

“Could I ask your advice?’ I said, breaking the silence that had theretofore enveloped us.

“Eh? Advice?” he replied, turning around slowly to face me, then pausing with a sigh. “Yeah. Fine.”

“For as long as I can remember, I have struggled to maintain my focus on the ball when my shadow is cast over it. When my body moves, and the shadow moves, it creates a distortion over the ball and my depth perception shifts. To me, it strikes an imbalance that triggers insecurity in the moment, and while my swing is in motion, I struggle to compensate. What do you do in that same situation in order to push past the distortion and maintain your focus?”

Twenty-two years ago, on the back of the BCC Practice Range, I received an incredible lesson in golf and life-and along with it, a sizable serving of humility and perspective.

It was sunset and the practice tee was bare, save for myself and Walter Romans. I was a young assistant pro with everything on the horizon-fresh off attainment of membership in the PGA of America. He was the Club’s Emeritus Professionalwhich is to say long-retired and highly-regarded. In fact, he was quite legendary within circles of deepened golf fandom. He’d played the PGA Tour for decades, with considerable success.

He’d competed in numerous major championships, while also balancing his head golf professional duties at BCC for 40 years.

He was, quite simply, a remarkably well-decorated pro.

Now, Walter didn’t talk much; and when he did, he was often cutting and unapologetic. He called it like he saw it; and well, he often saw it through a lens of discontent. Yet somehow, for some reason, he had taken a relative liking to yours truly. Took me under his wing, to a degree. He’d practice with me. Share stories.

Tell me about the old days. That kind of thing. Never too close.

But close enough to show his approval. And to me, that was everything.

So, there we were that summer evening. Practice tee. Setting sun. No words. Just the sounds of swings and divots. Two pros, generations apart, from entirely different backgrounds, brought together through shared connection in the greatest of games. It was an incredible moment. A blessed moment. But that wasn’t enough for me. No way. Not at 22 years old. I had to squeeze more out of it. In my youthful naiveté, I decided the situation required me to usurp additional fruit from this vine of perfection…

So, I decided to ask him for some advice. To pick his brain for insight into something that helped differentiate his incredible play from those of his fellow competitors. But I couldn’t just ask for any old tip. No, this had to be a specific query-and it would help if it applied to the surroundings of the moment we were in at that very instant. And then, as the sun began to descend 12

I was so proud of myself. How good of me to articulate such a remarkably keen and perceptive inquiry, I thought, as I began to gently smile. I raised my chin, leaned on my club, and awaited his response.

Walter furrowed his brow, cocked his head, and looked at the ground-before lifting his gaze and re-engaging eye contact.

“Your shadow bothers you?” he said.

“Yes, sir.” I replied.

“When you’re swinging the golf club?” he continued.

“Yes, sir.” I confirmed.

Then, after a long pause…

And with that, he turned around and went back to his practice.

Moment shattered…

I learned two things that evening-both equally important: First, I learned the importance of receiving the gift of a blessed moment. In imposing my own will onto an otherwise ideal situation, I drove a gut-wrenching wedge down its center through selfish desire for more. Sometimes, we’re given circumstances that require our acceptance as they are; and when tempted to affect otherwise, we should pause in consideration before action.

Secondly, through contemplation of Walter’s response to my question, I came to understand that sometimes over-thinking certain considerations can lead to devastating outcomes. To wit, whenever I saw my shadow over the ball, I’d respond with deepened concern and heightened analysis-when, in fact, I should have recognized the shadow as relative noise, looked past it to the substance of the shot, and quite simply, just hit the ball.

I soon learned that the same bears true in life. Sometimes we can analyze and paralyze very easily-when perhaps we should just simply pull back and recognize circumstance in the most fundamental of terms.

It was a golf lesson I’ll always remember from a pro I’ll never forget.◆

GET TO KNOW YOUR NEW HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL Nick Cannon was born in Lakeland, FL and at the age of two his family returned to their home state of North Carolina. Nick’s father was an avid golfer who introduced him to the game at an early age and encouraged him to enter competitive golf at the age of eight. Nick continued playing golf along with basketball, soccer, and baseball throughout his childhood. In his high school years Nick turned all his focus to golf. Upon graduating, Nick decided to pursue a career in golf and attended Methodist University for their Professional Golf Management Program. At Methodist University, Nick successfully qualified to play on the golf team and developed lasting relationships with many colleagues and fellow PGA Professionals; these connections continue to be an important part of his golf network.

After graduation, Nick accepted an Assistant Golf Professional position at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley (CCSV) in Sapphire, NC. Over the next five seasons Nick developed his skills as a golf professional and worked his way up to Lead Assistant for the final three seasons at CCSV. Sapphire, NC is a small rural resort area; and yet, Nick was able to successfully situate himself in the community and establish a notable reputation as both a teacher and accomplished player and professional. His time spent in Sapphire included getting to know a beautiful young lady (and elementary school teacher) named Taylor Hilty. Nick fell in love with her and they married on October 4, 2014. Shortly after their wedding in 2014, Nick accepted the Lead Assistant position at Linville Ridge Country Club in Linville, NC working under the Director of Golf, Kurt Thompson. Kurt is one of Nick’s mentors in the industry and was the driving force in Nick’s acceptance of a full-time position at Charlotte Country Club in the fall of 2016.

Nick has been the Lead Assistant at Charlotte Country Club since 2016. During his time at Charlotte Country Club, Nick worked under one of the best golf professionals in the country, Andrew Shuck. Andrew has entrusted 16

Nick with the responsibility of managing the day-to-day operation of all golf-related activities including overseeing the professional staff, successfully operating all tournament, and learning programs in the golf operation.

For the last three years, Nick has had the opportunity to be one of 28 PGA Professionals throughout the country to work and represent the PGA brand at the patron experiences at Berckmans Place during Masters week.

Berckmans Place is a high-end VIP venue at Augusta National and is considered the industry leader when it comes to world class hospitality. Like everyone else, Nick is sorely missing Masters week but is excited at the opportunity of introducing members of the BCC Professional staff to the Masters program in the coming years.

Living and working in Charlotte has been gratifying for Nick and Taylor, but their lives were forever changed and enriched by welcoming their beautiful daughter into the world on August 9, 2018. Charlotte Palmer Cannon is currently a delightful 20-month old who is a major focus of their day to day life; she certainly has her dad wrapped around her fingers.

Nick, Taylor, and Charlotte are very excited about this new adventure in Baltimore and are really looking forward to meeting all the members at Baltimore Country Club. ◆

WHAT DOES IT REALLY MEAN TO PLAY "READY GOLF"?

By Katie Mid Fulton, Assistant Golf Professional You're on the 8th green waiting for your turn to putt. The group behind you has been breathing down your neck for two holes and the ranger is watching from the shade. The group in front of you has just left the 9th hole and Mr. Long Drive behind you gives you a little nudge by launching his drive within 20 yards of the green. It's your turn to putt. Feeling rushed, you don’t read the green and end up three-putting. You grab something at the refreshment stand, gather yourself, and salvage a bogey on 9. As you head down to number 10, the group behind you is staring at you from the tee so you look at your watch. You’re 14 minutes behind but hey, you had to search for two balls in the BCC rough. As you drive up the 10th fairway, you decide to razz your group because they beat you on the front. You razz someone enough that they drop it in the pond and everyone laughs. This is your opportunity to make up some ground. You drive over to your ball only to realize you’re between a strong PW or a laid off 9.

The group in front of you is putting out on 11. Sound familiar? For the person who is trying to make up ground it should, but is probably not recognized as their problem.

Let's talk about the things that could create a more positive outcome for everyone involved: ON THE TEE BOX

1. Get to the 1st tee five minutes before your time to greet your group and be prepared for that first swing. If you’re running late, reach out to your playing partner(s) to let them know they should start without you.

2. As etiquette has taught us, the person with the birdie or low score controls the tee box. Unless we are playing in the final group of the U.S. Open on Sunday or playing in a match that requires a little bit of gamesmanship e.g. the Club Championship, don't wait for them if they're not ready.

It never hurts to have a spare ball handy on the tee box. If you are uncomfortable having it in your pocket, have one accessible so you don't have to search for a playable ball.

3. Putting the driver away can wait a few seconds. If you’re the last to tee off on a par 4 or 5 and riding, simply put the driver in your lap and put it back into your bag when you get to your next shot.

IN THE FAIRWAY

1. Be mindful of your conversations. Sometimes we wait to finish a conversation before deciding between that strong PW or laid off 9. Instead, hold the conversation because it can wait but the group behind you shouldn’t have to.

2. Know your strategy before standing up to the ball. Most of us have played both courses and know what to expect from our games; however, there is always someone who never knows what shot to hit even though they spend a few minutes at that same spot every weekend.

3. Go ahead to your ball if it’s in a spot that keeps you out of danger and won’t cause a distraction to your group. Cart partners often have a difficult time with this as it is common for the driver to stop at someone’s ball and wait for them to hit before tending to their shot. Dropping the player off and driving ahead allows for you to go about your pre-shot routine and have decisions made by the time it’s your turn. If the person furthest away still is not ready, announce that you are going to go ahead and hit.

4. Lost balls are one of the most frustrating things about golf.

First, keep an eye on that ball as it's in the air until you see it bounce or have a reference point. Second, be realistic about how far you hit it, and third, be ready after three minutes to

declare a lost ball. This requires knowing about the Stroke and Distance Local Rule we are using at BCC. You can read about Local Rule E-5 at www.usga.org.

ON THE PUTTING GREEN

1. Cart and bag placement are key. Park the cart or place your bag on the side of the green that is closest to the next tee box.

Having to walk back to get a cart or bag left in front of the green, takes time; plus it’s advantageous because you get a good look at the green’s slope as you’re walking to the ball.

2. You should always be lining up your putt while everyone else is lining up theirs, chipping onto the green and yes, while they are addressing and stroking their putts (as long as you’re not a distraction). If the person furthest away is not ready but you are, announce you will go ahead and putt.

3. A lot of people are not comfortable with leaving the pin in, but it is important and was changed in the Rules of Golf last year for a reason. Those 30-45 seconds spent removing and replacing the flag per hole can add 10 minutes to your round. Even more so, when there are groups with mixed feelings about this.

All in all, when it's "your turn”, be ready and do your best to keep up with the group in front of you. When we learn about golf etiquette, we are taught to stand still and to not walk or ride ahead, which sometimes causes us to do too much of the right thing. In the words of Al Czervik (Caddyshack) "Let's go. While we're young!" ◆

GREENKEEPER'S UPDATE

As of March 31, under Governor Hogan’s order, all BCC sporting facilities (including golf) were closed until further notice. Under the Governor's order we continue to operate our Golf and Grounds Maintenance teams. We appreciate the opportunity to continue to perform basic and minimal functions on our properties or otherwise risk the possibility of severe economic damage to these green spaces or living assets. Spring is a critical time for our Golf and Grounds teams as we strive to preserve our Five Farms and Roland Park properties’ plant health and functionality.

With the ever-changing times, our team continues to evolve and adjust our practices in numerous ways, with the upmost emphasis on the safety and welfare of our team. This has included staggering staff starting times and lunch breaks to reduce employee contact, adhering to Governor Hogan’s order limiting gatherings of 10 people or less inside of the maintenance facility, washing hands upon entry, eliminating the use of our time clock, and propping open frequently used doors to increase ventilation and reduce touch points. In addition, we have created procedures for training staff to execute an increased level of sanitation for all work spaces, facilities, and equipment touch points (maintenance vehicle steering wheels, door knobs, computer keyboards, tables, desks, etc.) as well as regular hand washing reminders using our video boards in our staff lunchroom. Finally, we continue to follow the directives given from WHO, the CDC, and Governor Hogan in addition to educating our educate staff on the signs and symptoms of COVID-19. In order to keep

our staff safe and healthy, staff who are sick or live with someone who becomes sick are required to stay home.

In last month’s Lifestyle, I detailed the drainage work being completed this spring and I am pleased to report that we have completed 80% of the work (not including fairway drainage work). While the most critical drainage work on these holes is complete, additional work will be completed at a future date.

While the courses and Club remain closed, our working hours have been adjusted to meet these challenging times.

Staff are now working between 32 and 36 hours per week (a reduction of between eight and 16 hours per week/ per person) and seasonal staff returning to the Club have been put on hold. Our goal is simple-when the Club reopens, we will provide two well-conditioned golf courses and well-manicured grounds that reflect the pride and professionalism of both our golf courses and grounds teams. ◆

BUNKER MAINTENANCE Daily bunker conditioning and frequent trimming around the perimeters will be limited. It’s time for bunkers to truly be a hazard.

COURSE SECURITY Greg and his team will be providing security from the Welcome House. When our teams are not on property, all gates and access to the courses will be closed.

REDUCED FERTILITY While the course is closed, we are cutting back fertility in roughs to reduce labor hours from mowing. Areas that are thin will be treated as necessary for optimum turf health.

COURSE ACCESSORIES All course accessories have been removed from the courses and will be returned once the courses have been opened for play.

PLANT GROWTH Plant growth regulators have been applied to areas such as greens, tees, fairways, bunker banks, roughs, and walk paths to reduce the frequency of mowing in these critical areas.

SPRING PROJECTS By Cathy Wagner, CPH, Director of Horticulture Despite the uncertainty surrounding the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak in Maryland, and with significant modifications to our work schedule and hours to adhere to CDC and government guidelines as well as mitigate the risk to our staff, the Horticulture team was able to complete several key projects this spring. It is disappointing to know that the abundant spring beauty of our Club’s grounds were largely missed while our members were away from the Club in March and April. We hope with our continued care throughout the Club’s shutdown, within whatever framework is allowed, these new installations will grow-in and be waiting to wow you when you are able to safely return to the Club.

At the warm-up tee, we replaced the failing and oversized Amelanchier and Spirea with dwarf Ann Magnolias and native Gem Box inkberry hollies. With the addition of summer annuals, we know this new combination will be a big improvement!

At our Roland Park campus, we were able to complete the final and much-needed update to the front entrance landscaping.

Overgrown and amorphous yews and azaleas were replaced with a hedge of Steeds holly, masses of Red Sprite winterberry and dwarf Tom Thumb cotoneaster, and a focal Amethyst witchhazel and Shasta double-file Viburnum. The old bollards and chains were removed, and asphalt curbing was added in front of the planting to protect it and prevent washout along the slope. Additionally, to the right of the entrance to the member lot, the flower bed was reduced, and curbing was added to improve the functionality of an existing drain and reduce the damage caused by errant vehicle tires.

To whatever extent allowed, we have and will continue to care for the gardens and grounds throughout the Club’s shutdown, in the interest of preserving and protecting this dynamic living asset. ◆

MOWING INTERVALS Mowing heights remain increased on playing areas such as greens, tees, fairways, and roughs. Bumping up mowing heights can lessen the need to mow as frequently. This is particularly effective for higher-cut turf like the rough. A 25% increase in height of cut could result in three to five days of additional relief between mowing, thereby extending the mowing interval for rough areas to 10 to 14 days.

FOCUS ON MAINTENANCE UP THE MIDDLE According to a recent USGA-funded survey of U.S. golf facilities, an average 18-hole golf course has approximately 95 acres of maintained turfgrass. The tees, fairways and putting greens account for 36% of the maintained turf areas and the remaining 64% is comprised of the rough, practice areas, nursery, and grounds. We will be focusing our maintenance efforts (both labor hours and other inputs) on the 36% where most golf takes place and scale back efforts in less trafficked areas.

MATERIAL INVENTORY It is important that we have essential materials on hand to combat a pest outbreak and enough fertilizer to maintain minimum turf health. Acquiring a fungicide for an emergency treatment on putting greens in short order could prove difficult given the business disruptions caused by COVID-19.

AERATION PROGRAMMING Aeration is a labor-intensive practice that generally requires the support of the entire maintenance team. Core aeration during tough times is something that most Clubs avoid; however, we are increasing our efforts to complete all core aeration on both the East and West Courses. By completing our East aeration now, we will no longer need to close in May, assuming the Governor has cleared the return of golf and other sporting activities.

GET TO KNOW WADE JOHNSTONE “You're too fat to be a professional athlete,” said my trainer without hesitation. I laughed and then sighed. He was right. As a professional athlete I got plenty of exercise but chocolate called to me like a siren song every evening. “Oh well,” I thought, “just another sacrifice to make for my love of squash.”

I started a strict eating plan immediately that, when my wife tells the story, swears brought tears to my eyes. In addition to my new diet I added several training sessions (reminiscent of boot camp) to my weekly schedule. This Herculean effort led to my crowning achievement, becoming world number two on the Professional Squash Tour.

I started playing squash in my native Australia when I was five years old. In the last 33 years the sport has left me frustrated and exhausted but ultimately, extremely happy.

I played professionally for 13 years and have coached for more than 21 years.

Squash is sometimes called human chess at 176 miles per hour.

This nickname refers to the fact that it's very tactical, you've always got to be thinking quickly and be a couple of shots ahead of your opponent.

The sport has never come easily for me. In my first junior tournament at age 12, I won my first match and thought I was amazing. I proceded to get slaughtered in my next two matches

and ended up crying after each loss. I didn't compete again for more than two years. When I was nearly 15 (and my ego had healed) I rededicated myself to squash and began training for the Australian World Junior Team. For three years, I woke up at 4:30am six days a week, drove an hour to training, trained for an hour, and then made the hour and a half trip back to school. After school, I attended more training sessions and matches and despite all my efforts, I still didn't make the team.

Making the Australian Junior Team was my goal. I was devastated when I failed to do so and wandered around for six months with my head in the clouds and no idea what I was going to do with my life. Then came my break. I was offered and accepted a scholarship to the Victoria Institute of Sport (VIS), located on the other side of the country in Melbourne. I trained with the VIS from 2000 to 2004 and again in 2006 and 2007.

When I’m preparing for a match, I get my heart rate up to 150 beats per minute for eight minutes before performing some dynamic stretching. This is to prepare for the rigors of squash and the cardiovascular endurance the sport demands. When on court, you’re gasping oxygen and attempting to make good tactical decisions while fighting exhaustion. This is the challenge that keeps bringing me back to the game. Here I am, it is 33 years later, and I still get to live my dream. I have the privilege of sharing my love of squash, and the labors of years of hard work and sacrifice with all of our members here at Baltimore Country Club. ◆
