Great People Make Favorite Places

BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place. ◆

Staff Member of the Month APRIL

Grechel Crum, Pantry Supervisor We congratulate our Pantry Supervisor Grechel for being named April Staff Member of the Month! She returned to BCC last year after being an intern five years ago and was quickly promoted to Lead Pantry. Grechel’s great attitude, work ethic, and time management are key traits for her success in this role! We thank Grechel for everything she does!

MAY

Phillip Groh, HVAC&R Technician Congratulations Phillip on receiving the May Staff member of the Month award! Phillip is a talented staff member with a dynamic skill set and friendly demeanor. He has worked tirelessly to correct numerous maintenance issues while BCC operates two campuses during Phase 1 construction. From running a new four-inch condenser water pipe the length of the Five Farms basement to hanging TVs and installing new kitchen equipment to get the Pool Complex ready, Phillip has an abundance of energy and is eager to tackle any task even if it's outside his realm of responsibilities. Phillip is always willing to help, puts BCC first in everything he does, and always brings positive energy when greeting members and staff.

Exceptional Leadership Award Chris Jeffers, Assistant Controller We congratulate Chris for receiving the Exceptional Leadership Award! Since he started in this role in November 2021, Chris has made great strides for the Accounting Team. He is constantly looking to improve communication amongst departments to ensure a great member experience. Chris’ professionalism and kindness have made him a valuable part of our BCC team! Thank you Chris, for all that you do!

Michael Wilkinson, Assistant Banquet Chef Congratulations Chef Michael on receiving the Exceptional Leadership Award! For the past four seasons Michael has led the charge at the pool. These last two seasons have been particularly challenging with the COVID-19 Pandemic and then Lifestyle Facilities Master Plan Phase 1 construction. His leadership with constant changing of staff has been noticed! He cares about his staff and is always willing to go the extra mile!

FITNESS & WELLNESS

My focus shifted with the diagnosis. I still wanted to play golf, but I also wanted to see my granddaughter grow up while I’m able to function at the highest level possible. I was a healthy 66-year-old with no plans to slow down. Janine has been with me every step of the way. She’s given me a productive path forward. “Workout angel” and “master of movement” are two of my favorite nicknames for Janine. Janine has become a great positive influence and coach-she makes me want to work harder. I added boxing to my exercise program this year. Boxing is really good for mitigating Parkinson’s. Janine demonstrated and worked with me on the ideal technique for punching and kickboxing. My boxing instructor was impressed at my first session. Janine’s skills and knowledge are extensive, and she’s good at sharing practical advice. I’ve leaned on Janine heavily over the last three years. My fight against Parkinson’s is for the rest of my life, so having a coach like Janine is great. I started seeing BCC Thai Yoga Massage Practitioner Marissa Loforte in March 2021, and have become a regular. Thai Yoga Massage is great for anything slowing you down, including Parkinson’s. Marissa has demonstrated and coached me on how to get more out of other yoga practices I’ve been doing for years. She is a naturally good coach, and Thai Yoga Massage helps the mind and body work better. The talented professionals from the Fitness & Wellness Team have taken great care of me. I wanted to share my experience with the membership. I highly recommend you give their services a try. I feel fortunate to have this BCC resource. Many with Parkinson’s don’t have access to this type of talent. I’m now 68 and feel better than I did four years ago. Patrick Tracy BCC Member

ULE UP

C EXERCISE S

Prior to COVID, I was working out four to five times per week at the Roland Park gym so one can imagine how devastating it was to, all of a sudden, have no gym to frequent when everything shut down! As a 60+ diabetic, it is important to me to keep up my strength and continue with cardio. During the lockdown, I started with BCC Personal Coach Jessica Taylorson and her Zoom HIIT classes twice a week at home and I was hooked! I knew that she was the perfect trainer for me and now I work out with her and my “younger than me” workout buddy two to three times per week for in-person training. While still having fun, she packs a mean workout into just 30 minutes, watching your every move and correcting your form, if needed. Her Tuesday and Thursday 7:00am HIIT classes via Zoom are a great way to sneak in 30 minutes of cardio to start your day! After a workout with Jess, you will always finish with a smile on your face! Jess is passionate and dedicated to her work as a Personal Coach and she thrives on helping her clients become healthier and stronger. I believe that anyone at any age can start a workout program. As we age, it’s important to remember that a strong core keeps you balanced, and weight training and cardio keep your metabolism working properly. Jess can help you reach your personal fitness goals as she did mine. The lid on my yogurt this morning reminded me that stronger makes everything better. Thanks Jessica, for helping me come out of that COVID slump and become the stronger me! Francie Apollony BCC Member

BCC Personal Coaches are with you every step of the way— demonstrating movements, inspiring you, answering your questions, monitoring your progress, and adjusting your workout as your needs change and your abilities grow. ◆

I’ve been dealing with Parkinson’s disease for about four years. The BCC Fitness & Wellness Team has been amazing as I work to mitigate the progression. The Team can help any member get more out of their golf and racquet sports game or just about anything else. In 2019, I started working with Director of Fitness & Wellness Janine Rich on my golf fitness. My undiagnosed Parkinson’s was affecting my golf. Janine’s drills and exercises were very helpful, but more importantly, they helped me better understand where normal movement was getting more difficult as Janine noticed the changes. In November 2020, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, and Janine was the first person I told.

GROUNDS

GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE The cool temperatures this spring have come to an end with the return of high heat and humidity to the Mid-Atlantic area. Traditionally, high heat arrives around the July 4th holiday, and we move into the “dog days” of summer. The root systems on the cool season playing surfaces (bentgrass, ryegrass, and tall fescue) naturally reduce with increased soil temperatures. The turf goes under stress rather rapidly under certain weather conditions. When this happens, to ensure our courses are in top condition, our staff will apply light applications of water during the hottest parts of the day (10:00am to 6:00pm) to ensure the survival of the turf under stress. If you encounter staff on the courses while playing, please do not hit from the tee or to the green until they are completely out of the way. If a staff member is unaware of your presence, please alert them before playing your shot, as the safety of our staff is of utmost importance. We thank you for your patience, courtesy, and consideration of our Team. In mid-July, our Team and golf course contractor McDonald & Sons, will be repairing 28 tees on the West Course by stripping the existing grass, laser grade so the surface is smooth, level, and then resod with bermudagrass. No holes will be closed while this work is being completed.

However, the tees being repaired will be closed for two weeks once they are sodded. This will allow the surface to root and establish before opening for play. We chose bermudagrass and the timing of the work since the bermudagrass performs best in the hottest and most humid environments, which correlates with our busiest time of the year for play. Tees scheduled for repair: 1 red, 3 all, 4 all, 5 all, 6 all, 9 blue, 10 all, 12 all, 13 red, 15 red, 17 blue and white, 18 blue and white

Also this month, we will be implementing work to convert the back Range tee mats to the style and material similar to the mats near the Golf House last summer. The work will begin in mid-July and take approximately seven to ten days. Since the work is being completed from the back of the tee and on the existing mat, practice from the tee will be unaffected. Finally, in last month’s Lifestyle, I briefly mentioned the increase in poa annua or annual bluegrass on the playing areas.

Programs are in place to apply plant growth regulators to weaken the annual bluegrass while encouraging bentgrass to fill in the voids. This has worked to some degree, but we are seeing more of the poa annua on the East fairways, greens, and belt cut surrounding the greens that require a different plan of attack. While some of what we see is the annual biotype that should die off in the warmer weather, many of the biotypes remain and are becoming a perennial problem. In 2019, a product called Methiozolin, or Poa Cure, was approved for use by the EPA following more than ten years of testing at numerous universities and golf facilities. We have identified and will treat nearly 11 acres of fairway turf (areas on East and West courses) that will receive three to five applications per year. The best outcome when using this product is to have all the treated areas “melt” away while the desirable bentgrass fill in the voids left behind. Indeed, patience will be required as this is a slow transition (two to three years). Early reports suggest this material will be a good tool in the ongoing battle against poa annua. Have a great summer, and we appreciate your support and consideration for the safety and well-being of our Team. ◆

MEET Sedrick Bailey Dear Members,

It has been quite the journey to arrive back to Baltimore, and I am more than thrilled to join the best team in the section. A short story of how I arrived here: My journey started here as a caddy, while also working with the Outside Services Team under Scott Nicholls, Tim Bolton, and Greg Jones. From there I rose to First Assistant Professional in five years at the Country Club of Maryland under Head Professional Mike Healy. Through this strong background of experience and knowledge, I was given a unique opportunity to join the professional staff at Augusta National Golf Club. Baltimore Country Club is the perfect place for me to continue to grow as a professional, and provide members with the best golf experience on a daily basis! ◆

Red Ball All-Stars Junior Progression Structure

Set your junior up for success! Our Junior Program follows a progressive ball system that allows success at all levels. The five areas of development for our Red Ball All-Stars are warmup, athletic development, tennis development, games, and character. • WARMUP: consists of simple activities to help players

become engaged

• ATHLETIC DEVELOPMENT: working on the ABCs

(Agility, Balance, and Coordination) and sending/ receiving skills using catching, throwing, and rolling

• TENNIS DEVELOPMENT: fundamentals of strokes,

technique, and movement

Overspecification at an early age is known to leave players with underdeveloped movement and coordination patterns that may negatively impact their game at a later stage. Developing the fundamentals of the ABCs serves as the building blocks for the groundstroke, serve, volley, and everything in between. ◆

• GAMES: dividing players into teams working on skills

covered during practice

• CHARACTER: helping players understand the importance

of teamwork builds character on and off the court
