KEEPING GOOD COMPANY

“Every year, I try to eat better,” says one of my yoga students, “but by the end of February, my new year's resolutions are already broken.”

This is true for a lot of us. February can be the month that our good habits start to break down. We mistakenly believe our habits are purely individual behaviors and choices. Many habits are highly influenced by our social circle. Our decision to make a change often cascades through our family, friends, and coworkers. All these people influence who we are and the choices we make.

Satsanga is a Sanskrit term that means “keeping good company.” Surrounding yourself with good, supportive people can be the most powerful thing you do to change old habits and hold on to new ones.

4 WEEKS TO BETTER BALANCE & A STRONGER CORE Small Group Program

with Dolores Aaronson, Group Exercise Instructor

A strong core is critical to everything we do. In this beginner to intermediate level program, we will work together to strengthen the small muscles that play an important role in keeping you grounded, then progress onto recruiting the larger muscles that support them. Basic moves will be put together and built upon to challenge both your core strength and balance!

VINYASA YOGA

HEART OPENER WORKSHOP

with Marissa Loforte, Group Exercise Instructor

Have you ever wondered how to do wheel pose, camel, lying pigeon, or restorative fish pose? Join Marissa to learn how to properly warm up the spine, shoulders, and hip flexors to enter a supportive backbend. All these poses will gently open the chest to offset that sitting desk forward lean. You will leave with a positive mindset, feeling more open and relaxed. All levels welcome, variations will be given to support your practice. Yoga mats will be provided.

GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE

On October 31, 2022, we implemented and recently completed an additional phase of the long-term drainage master plan on the East Course by finishing the entire hole of #1 and lowest portion of the #2 fairway. Details of the work include 855 tons of drainage sand, 226 tons of growing mix (top 6" of trench), 1.79 miles of pipe, and 32 surface drainage basins installed. Our long-term drainage master plan was developed in 2018 by Turf Drainage Company of America and implemented in 2019 because of record-breaking rainfall in 2018, with over 75" of precipitation (33" above the 147-year annual average), followed by 55" in 2019 (14" above the annual average). The plan has been implemented with local golf course contractor McDonald & Sons. To date, 4.04 miles of pipe, out of the over 15 miles in the plan,

have been installed. The plan involves numerous phases throughout the next few years until it’s fully complete. Ultimately the goal is to consistently provide a welldrained soil profile, healthy playing surfaces that can withstand the summer stress periods, and firmer playing surfaces that our members and guests come to expect. In addition, the work is designed to reduce or eliminate the number of days that carts are restricted from the East Course following rain events.

In addition to the drainage work this past fall, cart path repairs were completed on holes #6 and #12 West along with work in front of #1 East tee.

WINTER MAINTENANCE

As you know, much of what we do is dependent on the weather. During the winter months, when conditions are favorable for continuous improvement, our teams are outside since much of the work by both the Golf and Grounds teams are made in the off-season when play is not at its peak. While our staff size is reduced, a great deal of work is accomplished when work can be performed without interference from daily play.

Examples of work performed in the winter months include:

Have a great winter and we look forward to seeing you at Five Farms! ◆

HOW TO KEEP YOUR

Junior Golfer ENGAGED THIS WINTER

In Maryland, the weather is not necessarily our friend for golf in the winter. But… there are still plenty of ways for your junior to stay active this off-season so that they are ready to swing away when the weather warms back up.

Here are a couple of tips I recommend for not only juniors, but adults as well!

PLAY PUTTING GAMES AT HOME

Putting is the safest way to practice golf indoors on a carpet or even on an indoor putting mat. Implementing proper form and technique (using one's shoulders to lead their stroke instead of their hands) can slowly develop muscle memory over time and greatly improve anyone's putting stroke. Get creative and use household items such as stuffed animals, action figures, empty cardboard boxes, etc.—the possibilities are endless! For the younger juniors, this gives them a way to use their imagination to turn a cardboard box into a castle or sports stadium that they must putt through. Creating an environment at home utilizing fun toys and other items can really make a junior start to love golf in their own way. When they come to the Club at the start of the new season, they will feel more comfortable and get to enjoy everything this game has to offer. For my older juniors and adults, have fun with it and play a match between yourself and a buddy where the hole could be as simple as a toilet paper roll on the ground.

My only ask is that you have fun with it and put random obstacles in the way such as pillows and other clubs in your bag! No one likes a boring putt-putt course, so get creative and have fun putting indoors.

UTILIZE THE LOFT AT FIVE FARMS

We have two simulators that can be booked for personal use or private parties. Both simulators have many courses to choose from offering a variety of formats to play from whether you and a friend want to challenge Pebble Beach together in a team scramble or one-on-one in match play. Personally, I am a massive fan of how many fun games we can play to get away from the typical golf format. If you have never tried playing the games, I recommend you give it a shot. You might find it surprising how fun it can be to smash windows of a massive virtual mansion and Bugatti, or maybe your junior likes to play the popular Angry Birds game and you can now play the golf version we have called Angry Golf! What about darts? Long drive competition between friends? Virtual TopGolf? We have it all! The Loft is the perfect way for your whole family to take advantage of improving your golf game this winter, but more importantly, have fun together! For those of you who would also like some private instruction, our teaching bay is also available.

AFTER SCHOOL CLINICS & PROGRAMS

Yes, we have them, and I can promise this program is not one you want to miss out on if your junior is aspiring to improve and create friendships that will last a lifetime! For juniors ages 8-17, we have clinics available on Monday evenings in The Loft. Class sizes are limited, so please check Golf Genius for registration. Be on the lookout for more fun and exciting junior programs and events coming this year.

For more information regarding the Junior Academy, private lessons with myself, or anything else at all please reach out to me at dmurphy@bcc1898.com and I will be sure to get back to you.

I hope to see you around this winter working on those swings! ◆
