Staff Member of the Month SEPTEMBER
Bob Cordell, Welcome House Attendant
Bob has been a great asset to the BCC team ever since joining. Bob greets everyone with a smile, positive attitude, along with a welcoming personality. He does not shy away from engaging with members and guests, even if it’s only for a short period of time. Bob is very knowledgeable and continuously excels when opportunities arise.
OCTOBER
Dennis Kircher, Facilities Technician
Dennis has made a big impact on the aesthetics and ergonomics in several areas while only being at BCC for just over a year. His craftsmanship and attention to detail is revealed in every project he undertakes. Dennis can solve almost any maintenance issue and he is always willing to take on new projects. He spearheaded the Squash Pro Shop renovation at Roland Park this summer and his carpentry work is remarkable. Dennis is always willing to modify his schedule to meet the demands of the Club. He is an absolute pleasure to work with, willing to teach others, and puts BCC first in everything he does.
Summer All-Star Award Tim Yalinklincer, Bag Room Attendant
Tim started working at BCC in the summer of 2019. Over the past five seasons, Tim has shown major growth, both personally and professionally. He is a full-time student at Towson University and is finishing his final year attaining a BA in International Relations. Tim is a leader amongst his peers and someone we can all count on. He helps the golf operation in many ways, from cleaning clubs, keeping the cart fleet in tip-top shape, and taking care of all member requests. Tim’s approach to hospitality is sincere, and it shows when he engages with our members and their guests. You can count on a friendly “hello” or a warm “farewell” each time you pass by the bag room while Tim is on duty.

For some, the holiday joys and pleasures can feel more like a time of stress and over-commitment. This year, consider changing your mindset—RSVP selectively. You aren’t required to attend every party you are invited to. Between work, friends, and family, your social calendar can quickly become overloaded. When deciding on an invite, ask yourself if you genuinely want to be at the event or are going out of obligation. Remember, it’s okay to have boundaries; it’s okay to say no. Even during the holidays. Rebecca Printen, Yoga Therapist

Are you feeling the winter blues? Here are some tips to keep your spirits high all season long:
• Work out/do cardio indoors now that it’s frightful outside • Stretch and move as often as you can since temperatures are dropping • Try taking a flight of stairs this winter to burn off the holiday buffets, goodies, and drinks Mike Horn, Personal Coach 8

If your goal is to have a healthy, happy holiday season this year, acupuncture might just be your secret weapon. We all know that although the holidays can be joyful and bright, they can also increase our stress levels. Unfortunately, as per the American Psychological Association, stress can reduce the number of natural killer cells or lymphocytes in the body, which are needed to fight viruses.
11
Luckily, there are plenty of tools here at BCC to help keep your stress levels low: exercise, yoga, massage, relaxing with friends, and acupuncture. If you're skeptical, you don't have to take my word for it. Scan the QR codes to read articles authored by the NIH and researchers at Johns Hopkins that discuss the positive impact of acupuncture on stress levels.

When the season gets busy, and you run out of time, shorten your workout length but increase the intensity!
Schedule an acupuncture session and give yourself the gift of a stress-free holiday season this year! Heather Johnstone, Acupuncturist

If you ever wanted to try personal training but have been too nervous or unmotivated to start, grab a friend (or group of friends) and try out small group training! Working out with friends can boost motivation, build confidence, help with accountability, and make exercising fun!

Before or after a day of holiday shopping, take care of your body with a simple Pilates-inspired stretch! Lie on your back and bring your knees into your chest, hugging them gently. Rock side to side to massage your lower back. Then, extend your legs towards the ceiling, flexing and pointing your feet. This gentle stretch can help wake up your body and improve circulation. Meredith Lull, Reformer Pilates & Group Exercise Instructor 'Tis the season for giving. Give yourself the gift of self-care to help you enjoy the holidays to the fullest.

GROUNDS
GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE As a reminder, the following cultural practices began in late November and will continue through early December, weather permitting. Originally, the plan was to verticut the fairways, but due to weather conditions, specifically saturated soil from prior rain, there has been a change. Instead of verticutting, we will be solid tine aerating the fairways. If weather and soil conditions improve, the initial plan for verticutting may be carried out on a future date when we can successfully complete the process and ensure a clean result throughout the winter months. Once this is done, the East Course fairways will close for the season to undergo core aeration. As we prepare for the 2024 season, one of the final practices we completed on portions of the West Course greens (during the week of November 27) was Drill and Fill Aeration. This process drills holes up to 12 inches deep into the putting green on sixinch centers, removing soil and backfilling each hole with sand to create deep sand columns in the root zone. This is a proven method for modifying the root zone without total rebuilding to improve turf quality and greatly improve internal drainage on the portions of greens that remain soft and wet following rain events.
As the grass is no longer growing and divot recovery is non-existent, all play from the Driving Range will now be from the mats until the next growing season. Additionally, the Range tees and select tees on the West will be covered, allowing air, water, and sunlight to penetrate. This covering acts similarly to a greenhouse, enhancing surface and soil temperatures. While damage to bermudagrass on the range has been well documented, we have taken the following steps to ensure this will be minimized in the future: 1. There will be no mechanical ball picking on the range during the winter months while the grass is dormant. All picking will be done by hand 2. The height of cut has been raised on the field leading up to dormancy, and the addition of drainage will be extremely beneficial, although work remains in the middle of the field. While there isn't a foolproof way to prevent winter injury in bermudagrass, we feel the steps we have taken, along with installing the covers, provide the best level of protection for bermudagrass grown during periods of extremely low temperatures and growing on a sand base. The leaves have been falling over the last six weeks, and we use a combination of leaf blowers and mulching to make the leaves disappear from the property. A practice that we feel benefits our turf here at BCC is the mulching of leaves throughout the hundreds of acres of property we maintain. Leaf work will continue until the property is clean and leaf-free! If winter is anything like last year, with no snow and near record rounds of golf, temperatures are still at a point where there is no recovery of playing surfaces during the late fall and winter months. Continue to repair your ball marks, replace your divots, and use the seed provided on the carts and divot stations on the courses when possible. We look forward to a great winter, both at Five Farms and Roland Park, as we prepare for the 2024 season.
Tim Kennelly, CGCS Head Greenkeeper 15
RACQUETS
THE MULTI-BALL
ADVANTAGE The Benefits of Playing Multiple Racquet Sports
Racquet sports have always been popular for their combination of physical fitness, mental agility, and social interaction. While many enthusiasts stick to one sport, there is an emerging trend among athletes and fitness aficionados: playing multiple racquet sports. In this article, we will explore the many benefits of engaging in more than one racquet sport, including enhanced skills, improved fitness, and mental stimulation SKILL DIVERSIFICATION One of the most significant advantages of playing multiple racquet sports is the diversification of skills. Each racquet sport offers unique challenges and requires different techniques, strategies, and styles of play. By participating in various sports, individuals can develop a wide range of skills that can be transferred between the sports. For example, tennis and pickleball require excellent hand-eye coordination and agility. Whereas, squash and paddle tennis demand fast reflexes and strategic thinking in tight, enclosed spaces. By participating in multiple racquet sports, players can sharpen their reflexes, improve their coordination, and adapt their strategies for various playing environments. This diversified skill set not only makes athletes more adaptable but also enhances their overall racquet skills. IMPROVED PHYSICAL FITNESS By incorporating different racquet sports into your fitness routine, players can achieve a wellrounded approach to physical fitness, targeting various muscle groups and energy systems. This diversity can help prevent overuse injuries and keep workouts fresh and engaging. MENTAL STIMULATION Playing multiple racquet sports isn't just about physical fitness; it also provides a mental workout. Each sport comes with its own set of challenges and strategic elements, requiring players to think quickly and adapt to different game situations. This constant mental stimulation is a valuable aspect of playing multiple racquet sports, as it keeps the brain sharp and alert. Whether you're a competitive athlete or simply looking to have fun and stay fit, playing multiple racquet sports offers a holistic approach to sports and recreation that can enhance your overall quality of life. So, pick up that squash racquet, step onto the tennis court, or grab a pickleball paddle—the multi-ball advantage awaits!

SQUASH CLUB ROAD CLASSIC RECAP
The squash season opener, the Club Road Classic, showcased an intense competition between the Orange and Purple teams. After the allocated time of continuous play (30 minutes for singles and 45 minutes for doubles), the teams were tied. The spotlight fell on a lightning squash battle between Patrick Bollinger and Brendan Hartman, where the first player to secure three points would claim victory. The match reached a gripping 2-2 tie, pushing it to a sudden-death point. Brendan Hartman, seeking redemption from the previous year's loss, emerged triumphant with a 3-2 win, securing the Purple Team's overall victory. Following the Club Road Classic, participants gathered in the Grille for a delightful buffet and the drawing of the Miller Matches Handicap tournament, adding a sociable and celebratory element to the event. Thank you to all who participated.
