REEF POINTS APRIL 2026

This is my last Reef Points column! At the end of this month, we’ll have the Change of Command ceremony and the Commodores’ Ball. In my first column, I said that during this year I would think about the Club in terms of the Past, the Present, and the Future, so in this last column, I’d like to talk about how that was done during the year.

Let’s start with the Past. Among the many longstanding traditions that were continued during the year, we added a new special recognition for those who have been Members of Coral Reef for fifty years or more. In this first year of recognition, we honored forty-four Members with membership of fifty up to sixty-nine years. It was a meaningful event, where we had an opportunity to thank them for their years of membership and support. In each of the coming years, Members who complete fifty years of membership will be recognized.

The list of things that happened in the Present is too long to describe here. It seemed that we had non-stop activities all year, from committee events, to regattas – including recently hosting the 99th year of the Bacardi Cup – to Club parties, to all the other family and group get-togethers throughout the year. An important part of the Present that will be of great help in preparing for the Future is that our overall financial results this year have been very good. That will be covered in more detail at the Annual Meeting on April 4.

Moving to the Future, we have been working on a Long Range Plan. The Long Range Planning Committee members themselves represent the Past, the Present, and the Future, with members who are Past Commodores, current Officers, and future Flag Officers. This first year of the Long Range Plan will also be discussed at the Annual Meeting.

As my year draws to a close, I have to recognize and thank many people. First of all, the Members. They have spent countless volunteer hours organizing so many events individually and through their Committees. I’ve often said that these things don’t just happen automatically. And of course, thanks also go to all the Members who have enjoyed the time they spend at the Club. One of the fringe benefits of being Commodore (aside from the parking spot!) is that I had the opportunity to meet so many of the Members during the year.

We also have a great Board of Directors who help guide and manage our activities and planning. They spend time in the formal Board meetings, but they also have the responsibility of informally talking with Members they represent so they can add those perspectives to the discussions. I want to thank Dr Bernard Brijbag, Christian Falk, Lori Harvey, and Kenia Rocha who will be completing their terms. In addition to our Board members, our Flag Officers have their own direct responsibilities as part of the succession process outlined by our Founders. That process from the Past ensures that they are key parts of our Present and will be the drivers of our Future when Chris Block accepts command as your new Commodore, along with the other Flag Officers and Board members elected at the Annual Meeting.

And very importantly, where would all of this be without our Crew? Led by our ever-present General Manager, Jim VanBuren, the Crew includes those people we see every day as well as those who are more behind-the-scenes, but all of whom are essential in creating the Member experience that we all enjoy. A concrete example of that recognition was shown by those Members who expressed their appreciation for our Crew through their contributions to this year’s all-time-high Crew Holiday Fund. Let’s all be sure to thank our Crew every chance we get.

And one last thank-you, to Lorena. She has put up with my sometimes twice-a-day trips to the Club, multiple Board and Committee meetings, weekend reviews of reports, monthly Reef Points columns, various award presentations, innumerable phone calls, less vacation time, and all those other details that go with the job. She has also been a big help in providing another perspective as we went through the year seeing things that I might not have noticed.

It has been an honor to serve you, and I hope we’re leaving the Club in great shape for the Future. It’s a real pleasure to see so many happy people at the Club and we’re looking forward to seeing all of you there in the years to come.

99th Bacardi Cup Thriller

By Julie Hanrahan The 99th Star Class Bacardi Cup kicked off at Coral Reef Yacht Club the first week of March with an air of excitement and a record-breaking 75+ Star class entries from around the globe, promising an event to remember. Bright skies and steady breezes, and a fleet that looked like the Who's-Who of Star class sailing, combined to make the week both competitive and genuinely exciting.

The strong easterly breezes held true for six straight days of phenomenal racing. Each morning, the Star sailors launched from a breathtaking starting line of almost a half mile long, pushing and driving their way through a two-mile beat to the top of the course before sailing downwind to the leeward gate. The course was two laps with an exciting windward finish each day - long tactical legs that rewarded smart decisions, clean boat handling, and relentless speed. At the helm of Coral Reef's race committee team for the Bacardi Cup was Principal Race Officer Carol Ewing (PC), who ran the event with the precision and calm that comes from years of experience.

For six straight days, Biscayne Bay delivered steady pressure which allowed crews to push tuning and tactics hard, producing fast, close racing and dramatic mark roundings. By the end of Day 3, Paul Cayard and Frithjof Kleen logged three consecutive first place finishes.

No small feat, as they were being chased closely by such legendary names as five-time Olympic medalist Robert Scheidt, six-time Bacardi Cup champion Mateusz Kusznierewicz, past Bacardi winners Eric Doyle and Payson Infelise, and prior Star world champions Augie Diaz and John MacCausland. One prominent sailing journalist compared this year's Bacardi Cup to golf's The Masters, or Wimbledon in the tennis world. Conditions were perfect for thrilling duels for those who nailed sail trim, weight placement, and sheer guts. It was a thrilling battle that mixed sailing legends with a new generation of talent.

By the final day, enough lead changes had left the trophy spot still in question, and the battle resumed for who would hoist the silver cup. This was a dream that Paul Cayard, by his own description, had chased for the past forty-five years. The stakes had never been higher.

With the eyes of much of the sailing world following, the sixth day of perfect Biscayne Bay conditions awarded the 99th Bacardi Cup trophy to Paul Cayard and Frithjof Kleen. Robert Scheidt and crew Austin Perry took second, with Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Bruno Prada taking third.

As we look back at the 99th edition, it's clear the Bacardi Cup remains a jewel on our calendar both historic and fiercely competitive.

Hats off to Carol Ewing and her team, who saw this event as a dress rehearsal for the coming Star Class World Championships, which will be hosted at Coral Reef Yacht Club in November 2026.

By Ella Simmons Passion, persistence, and perseverance are attributes used to describe Athens 2004 Olympic gold medalist Kevin Burnham. More importantly, Kevin was also known for his exuberance and kindness, which guided him as a sailor, competitor, and coach. This remarkable legacy is carried on through an annual award - the Kevin Burnham Memorial Award - and an endowed fund created by his wife, Elizabeth Kratzig, children Edward and Kyla Burnham, and lifelong friend Steve Benjamin, through the US Sailing Foundation.

The award is open to sailors who compete or have previously competed in Olympic classes and/or the Olympic Development Program. It is given to a competitor or team of competitors who best exemplify Kevin’s spirit and embody all his characteristics: not only passion, persistence, and perseverance, but also sportsmanship on and off the water, love of the sport, and love for their competitors.

On February 12, 2026, US Sailing convened its annual Champion’s Dinner in the distinguished Model Room at the historic New York Yacht Club in New York City. During the Ceremony, Magnus Liljedahl received the Kevin Burnham Memorial Award. For Magnus, this recognition carries special meaning, as his friendship with Kevin dates back nearly five decades; they first met at Coral Reef Yacht Club in 1977 and instantly became friends. Their first sail together was a Biscayne Bay excursion aboard a J-24 named La Petit Mambo. Magnus recalls the moment they sailed a little too close to Key Biscayne Yacht Club, where they were chased away by the Secret Service as President Nixon was a frequent guest at Bebe Rebozo’s home nearby.

Magnus describes Kevin as the most positive person he has ever met, “His glass was always full!” He was an exceptional athlete, a fast swimmer, runner, and incredibly talented sailor. He had amazing social skills and was a motivator who encouraged others to go bigger and do better. He was a visionary, referring to himself and Magnus as Olympians before it ever happened. Kevin was the loudest voice out on the race course. Magnus could hear Kevin shouting his name all over Biscayne Bay, whenever he watched him compete.

In 1992, while Magnus was in Barcelona supporting Team USA, Kevin was fighting to stay in medal contention. After a meeting on the lay day, Magnus offered crucial encouragement. The following day, Kevin and his teammate turned the regatta around to earn silver. Kevin told him, “Magoo, if I can do it, you can do it.” Those words stayed with Magnus for eight years, until he stood atop the podium himself in Sydney 2000.

Today, Magnus continues to champion these values of good sportsmanship and character. Since 2007, he has presented the Magnus Liljedahl Sportsmanship Award at the annual Orange Bowl International Youth Sailing Regatta. “I am humbled to have this award bear my name,” Magnus says. “But the true honor belongs to those who embody its spirit.” Through his Olympic achievements, lifelong mentorship, and dedication to community sailing, Magnus embodies the spirit of the Kevin Burnham Memorial Award at Coral Reef Yacht Club, the US Sailing Center Miami and beyond.

Smooth Runner, Silent Killer

By Zach Mann, Safety Committee Chair As I was pondering some boating safety issues that often fly under the radar, a memory from a past production shoot popped into my head. I had to keep a boat running and maneuvering in a tight spot to nail that perfect “beauty shot.”

The boat had to stay perfectly positioned with engines idling and gears shifting for hours, battling wind and current. While I was focused on the shot, I started thinking about something that often gets overlooked on the water: carbon monoxide exposure.

Today’s boats are equipped with modern, four-stroke outboards and inboard engines, which are quieter, cleaner, and more efficient than the engines we grew up with. They’re smooth runners with a silent killer. Because these four strokes run so smoothly and produce less visible exhaust, it’s easy to forget they still produce carbon monoxide (CO), and carbon monoxide is a serious hazard because it’s colorless, odorless, and invisible.

Carbon monoxide is produced whenever fuel is burned. On a boat, it can accumulate around the stern, swim platform, cockpit, or even inside cabins. Certain conditions, such as idling engines, running a generator while anchored, operating in calm air, or maneuvering in tight spaces, can cause exhaust gases to linger where people are sitting, swimming, or relaxing.

One situation that has increased over the years is people lingering around the swim platform while the engine or genset is running. Sometimes this happens while preparing for water sports or simply sitting close to the water while the boat idles. Even though the environment is outdoors, the boat's hull design and airflow around it may cause exhaust gases to recirculate toward passengers.

It’s a bit tricky with carbon monoxide, because the first signs can be hard to spot. You might think you’re just dealing with headaches, dizziness, nausea, tiredness, or confusion, which could easily be mistaken for seasickness, dehydration, or just a long day out. But if you keep being exposed, these symptoms can quickly become serious.

Luckily, there are a few easy things you can do to help keep yourself safe. Try not to sit or swim near the back of the boat when the engines are running. Also, make sure you have carbon monoxide detectors in your cabin and turn off the engines when people are in the water. Good ventilation and being aware of your surroundings are really important. Modern boats are amazing, but even with all the cool technology, being aware of what’s going on around you is still the most important safety tip for any boater.

Double WOW Yoga Class and Clothing Swap!

By Aubrey Quintero, WOW/Ladies Sailing Chair On Saturday, March 8th, Women on the Water started with an International Women’s Day yoga class on the ReefTop. The weather was perfect as the ladies stretched, strengthened, and practiced mindfulness.

Secondly, our Clothing Swap was an eyeopening and empowering experience for our guests. Katelyn Whitehurst of ‘Red Hot Vintage’ is a successful Vintage and Upcycled Retailer, who sources her goods from South Florida and beyond.

After tea, coffee, and light bites, guests listened and learned about the nature of second-hand shopping and how clothing swaps can play a critical role in delaying items in their journey to the landfill. Specifically, we learned tips to identify high-quality textile materials, checking buttons and zippers, and how to get stains out of pre-loved items. Lastly, our closing thoughts circled around why it’s more sustainable for the environment to not “buy in” to fast fashion and how important and fun it is to shop consignment and vintage. Between morning movement and afternoon shopping, Team WOW is really busy!

Florida Council of Yacht Clubs March Update

Founded in 1951, the Venice Yacht Club is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Located on Roberts Bay, it boasts 780 members with dues on par with similar clubs at $4,780 per year; however, 17% of the dues go to capital reserves. Recent hurricanes targeting the west coast caused significant club damage and a loan of $150,000 was necessary to cover noninsured losses. In addition, it now has twentyfour openings for membership. To mitigate future hurricane damage, the club has also invested in removable barrier dams; however, they are only 4’3” high. The city of Venice (population 29,000 with 50% seasonal) is quite different from Miami. The median age is 68.7 years - Venice has been voted the “best retirement city in Florida.” In other update news, Peter Morey, head of the Bahamas Marina Association, has announced a new plan regarding the increase in Bahamas cruising fees. The association plans to canvass candidates to access their views regarding these increases and then lobby those who would support a reduction. New parliamentary elections are scheduled soon. Finally, our Coast Guard has been busy seizing $18.9 million worth of contraband drugs over the past two months. Our next FCYC meeting will be at the Pelican Isle Club in Bonita Springs on May 15th.
