LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Welcome
Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America
37th Annual National Education & Leadership Awards Gala
May 28, 2026
As Mayor of Washington, DC, it is my pleasure to offer greetings to the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America, Sons of Italy Foundation organizers, and guests as you attend your 37th Annual National Education & Leadership Awards Gala!
Established in New York City more than a century ago, the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America (OSDIA) remains committed to offering a range of support for Italian immigrants as they navigate becoming U.S. citizens. The Sons of Italy Foundation (SIF) continues to do the same, standing as a pillar in the communities they serve, and still as a national beacon of hope for our country’s most vulnerable groups. Thank you as always, for the selfless contributions made year-round towards uplifting humanity, including the constant support of orphaned children, the elderly, students, and families. SIF hosts the National Education and Leadership Awards (NELA) Gala annually to further its cause, an event that has notably raised millions of dollars, benefiting educational programs, disaster relief, cultural advancement, and critical medical research
Thank you once again for choosing Washington, DC as the backdrop for such an impactful event. Your powerful initiatives continue to reach those who need it most, helping them to become whole with good health, financial stability, confidence, and of course community. I wish you the utmost success as you inspire, fellowship, and give back. During your stay, please take a moment to enjoy first-hand the excitement Washington, DC and beauty of Springtime in our nation’s capital.
Once again, I join the more than 700,000 residents of Washington, DC in welcoming members and guests of the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America as you celebrate the 37th Annual National Education & Leadership Awards Gala.
Muriel Bowser Mayor, Washington, DC
A WORD FROM OUR HONORARY CO-CHAIR
Marco Peronaci, Ambassador of Italy to the U.S.
Prot: 5254-P Washington, May 14, 2026
On behalf of the Embassy of Italy I offer the warmest congratulations on the 37th annual National Education and Leadership Awards Gala of the Sons of Italy Foundation!
I am very pleased to be the Honorary Co-Chair of this important event, along with Hon. Stefania Proietti, President of the beautiful Region Umbria, Region of Honor of the NELA Gala 2026.
Throughout the years, OSDIA and its "philanthropic arm", the Sons of Italy Foundation, have been supporting the Italian American Community and protecting the Italian Heritage, including by promoting the study of the Italian language.
I greatly value the contribution of the Italian-American community to strengthening relations between Italy and the United States. Indeed, people-to-people ties are the added value of the very special friendship between our two Nations. I deeply appreciate the fundamental contribution that - in this context - the Sons of Italy Foundation has been giving to promoting, among the Italian descendants, educational excellence and pride for the Italian culture, symbols and traditions.
I also wholeheartedly thank OSDIA for the generosity it is showing, taking active part in the solidarity campaign promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in favor of the populations of the Italian Regions that were affected by Cyclone Harry last January. This confirms, if any further proof were needed, that Italian Americans care deeply about Italy and are always ready to help in times of need.
So, let's nourish this very special relationship, celebrating the Italian Heritage, Region Umbria and the Italian American Excellencies represented by Honorees of the 37th NELA Gala!

Macchio has appeared on renowned international stages—from the White House to Madison Square Garden—and delivered a notable performance of the U S National Anthem at the 47th Presidential Inauguration . A celebrated performer at iconic venues, he has sung in ten consecutive sold-out concerts as one of the Three New York Tenors at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center
Born into an Italian American family in Holbrook, Long Island—a suburb of New York City—Macchio was a gifted student whose singing voice was discovered in his Sachem High School chorus, a class he reluctantly enrolled in to meet a state graduation requirement . Encouraged by his chorus teacher, he shifted his focus from academic pursuits to music He spent the next two summers at the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, where he received private vocal instruction from New York University adjunct voice professor and Holocaust survivor John Kuhn .
He has collaborated with world-class artists and producers, including legendary producer David Foster, and has performed alongside Grammy Award–winning musicians Classically trained at the Manhattan School of Music Conservatory, Macchio starred as Arturo in Vincenzo Bellini’s I Puritani and returned to the opera stage last fall at the Wexford Opera House in Ireland, with appearances in Germany, Spain, and Austria in 2025
Expanding his artistic reach, he has also appeared in major motion pictures, including Cabrini (2024) and DON Q (2023) Blending classical tradition with contemporary appeal, Christopher Macchio brings an unforgettable musical experience to this year’s Gala—enhancing an evening dedicated to excellence, heritage, and celebration
The Sons of Italy Foundation extends its heartfelt gratitude to Michael G. Polo and Brian M. Andzik for their generous sponsorship of this evening’s special performance by Christopher Macchio.
SPECIAL PRESENTERS
Sabrina Conte
Sabrina loves being on the air in her hometown Born and raised in the DMV, Sabrina grew up in Clinton, Maryland and went to Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, Virginia where her morning announcement duties parlayed into a Broadcast Journalism degree at American University. After two years as a traffic reporter in the DMV, Sabrina ditched the congestion of DC for 7 years of beach life in Rehoboth Beach and Lewes, Delaware Realizing she couldn’t become a beach bum this early in life, she moved back home after landing her dream gig on WASH FM!
Outside of visiting the Delaware beaches, Sabrina tries to get to Italy once a year to not only visit her extended family, but to reconnect with her roots. As a first generation Italian-American, Sabrina has always made her Italian heritage a priority From taking weekly Italian classes to yearly solo trips to Rome, Sabrina’s identity is firmly rooted in her Italian-American heritage, and she prioritizes passing down the language and the culture to her 11 year old daughter so her parents’ sacrifice of leaving their beautiful homeland is never forgotten.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
The Sons of Italy Foundation® is the philanthropic force empowering culture, fostering brilliance, transforming lives. Through charitable giving and visionary projects, we uplift communities and shape a future of opportunity, unity, and enduring impact.
SCHOLARSHIPS, EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES & SUPPORT
Every year, the SIF and OSDIA lodges give scholarships to promising Italian-American students. Since 1959, the SIF has given tens of millions of dollars in scholarships at the local, state and national levels.
EMPOWERMENT THROUGH LANGUAGE
The SIF supports the promotion of Italian language by collaborating with Italian Institutions and Italian affiliated academic centers in the US and abroad. Accessible language learning for all, especially those of Italian descent, deepens connections to their roots, enhances cultural understanding, and cultivates a more informed and connected global community.
MEDICAL RESEARCH
The SIF supports research to help national charities find cures for the most devastating diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, autism, and Cooley’s anemia.
CULTURAL PRESERVATION & IMMIGRATION HISTORY
The SIF’s Garibaldi-Meucci Museum is a center of Italian culture on Staten Island, NY. The SIF also contributes to preserving Italian immigrant documents at the Immigration History Research Center in Minnesota and now has partnered with ANcestry.com to broaden its impact.
HONORING AND ASSISTING THOSE WHO PROTECT AND SERVE
The SIF helped fund the creation of the World War II Memorial and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. In recent years, the SIF has given tens of thousands of dollars to carious groups that support veterans’ causes, including the Wounded Warrior Project, the Gary Sinise Foundation, Help Our Military Heroes, and Luke’s Wing’s, among others.
