Chairman's Welcome Today we welcome Waiheke United in what is not only our fourth home game in four weeks, but a Chatham Cup tie where we will be seeking to make the quarterfinals for the second successive year. Our women's first team also embarks on round three of the WaiBOP W-League with a fixture against Unicol. We are also due to face Waiheke here again on July 23 in a northern premier league match. Waiheke have only ever played at Gower Park once before, and it is sobering to note on that occasion in 2018 they beat us 3-1. That was our only home loss that season as we won the northern league first division. The Youth National League (U17s) will run for approximately two months at the end of the winter premier youth competitions, with13 teams split into two pools, one of six teams and another of seven teams, and will each play six times in a round-robin competition. Three teams will qualify for the finals series: The winner of each pool and the winner of a play-off game between the two second-placed teams. Meanwhile, planning is now underway for Melville’s 50-year celebrations, to be held on the weekend of November 4-6. A Friday night Mix & Mingle cocktail evening will be held at Gower Park, followed by a number of Saturday matches, from men’s Over 50s to a Women’s Past & Present match, to academy mini-games. A formal dinner (with guest speaker and band) will be held on Saturday November 5 and a large turnout is expected here. It is particularly important that we receive early (and firm) expressions of interest for the Saturday night dinner via our club website. Price and venue will be announced shortly but there will be an unavoidable size limit for this event and preference will be given to those who have registered their interest early. The programme and schedule for this is still quite open because it is also possible our northern league and U17 team may be in competition in national round play that weekend. We come into todays game off the back of a tough loss last week. It was a tight game with very little separating the two teams. While I didn’t think our attacking play had quite the same vigour as the previous weeks, I did feel like we created the better chances in the game.

Goals change games and unfortunately it was one of those days where a couple of keys moments just seemed to go against us…..on to the next one. We are at a stage of the cup where the excitement levels are starting to ramp up. Regardless of our league position, it is clear that our lads are incredibly focused on going as far as we can in the competition. Having been part of two runs to the final as both a Melville player and coach, its hard not to feel like we have unfinished business with the cup. Hopefully this year we can have another good run at it.

Welcome to todays guests Waiheke United and their travelling fans. The Waiheke supporters create a fantastic atmosphere where ever they go and you can see that is reflected in the “never say die” attitude of their players. League form counts for nothing in the cup and we know today will be a lively and challenging encounter. Enjoy the game and hopefully we can keep the dream of the cup alive! Wilky

Birkenhead spoil the party The feel-good factor around Melville’s generally-impressive 2022 northern premier league campaign evaporated slightly following a 2-0 home loss to recurrent bogey team Birkenhead United. On the points table Melville is still third (and Birkenhead still second) but what was a 6point buffer between teams sitting outside the top four has been reduced to five. The loss wasn’t because Melville played particularly badly but Birkenhead proved to be a step up in quality. With their minds no doubt concentrated by having been beaten by Melville at home back on April 15, they proved to be formidable opposition once they got their noses in front. Kieran Richards couldn’t find the x-factor for once, Stafford Dowling met defenders every bit as physical as he was, and Oliver Collotty was more a target for fouls than a targetman. Meanwhile last week’s man of the match, Josh Galletly was missing from Melville’s lineup after injuring his back midweek. The match was played at a decent clip, was fiercely contested and a good insight into what Melville can expect if they make the top four and the national round. Referee Nick Waldron was shipped in to control the match – which was being videoed as part of a referee instructional aid - and later said he clocked over 10km on his match pedometer.

Melville had a good chunk of the early play but Birkenhead were slick on the counter-attack. It was from a fast breakout down their right that the freshly transferred Dane Schnell scored in the 27th minute, while Max Tommy needed to make a fine save not long after. Earlier Melville had a goal from a corner ruled out for a push. The killer blow came in the 62nd minute when Birkenhead earned a penalty from what was adjudged to be a Sean Liddicoat foul and Luke Jorgensen converted. Liddicoat, who had been yellow-carded, was then subbed off. Melville went close with a couple of efforts but lacked the precision you need to win games like this.

The Feds scored a useful 2-1 home win over Papamoa in the WaiBOP Premiership. Mike Cosgrave and Isiah Horne gave Melville a 2-0 lead, while Connor Irvine, son of former Melville first-teamer Andy Irvine, scored late for Papamoa. Melville is sixth. on the table. The win was the only one for senior teams with the Nobs, Bs and Old Boys all falling to Northern United opposition.

Back in the winter of 1972 Bob Owens had become frustrated at the haphazard state of junior football structures in his neighbourhood and got together with another Scouser, Tony Tatler, to form a new club from scratch. That initial Melville District Schoolboys club has grown into the Melville United AFC of today, and now we are about to celebrate 50 years of football. The weekend of November 4-6 2022 has been set for 50-year celebrations and a club reunion to reflect upon an incredible journey full of highs, lows and milestones. The following events have been scheduled for the Celebration of 50 Years programme... # A Friday night Mix & Mingle cocktail evening at Gower Park (including historic slide show and anniversary merchandise). # A number of Saturday matches at Gower Park # A formal dinner (with guest speaker and band) on Saturday November 5. # A range of anniversary apparel will also be available (more details later). To assist our planning for these events, we ask that people register their interest on the Melville United website.
