Chairman's Welcome Today we welcome Takapuna, who were runners-up in division one last season and thus earned promotion. We have not hosted Takapuna since July 5, 2014. Congratulations to our women's first team who picked up their first win last weekend! And last night we hosted Claudelands Rovers in the W-League. We are hoping for more night football in 2023 with the arrival of new floodlights on the #1 pitch which will open new opportunities for the club.

But back to Takapuna, on the last occasion we hosted eight years ago we won 3-1 with goals from Gavin Douglas, Dan Finlay and Jevon Williams. Also playing that day were current squad members Aaron Scott and Luke Searle. For Luke, the game marked his first first team start after two substitute appearances. Speaking of the Searles, it was pleasing to last weekend see former club member Jamie Searle signed by Barnsley on a 2-year deal, after earlier professional spells with Aston Villa and Swansea City. It was Melville coach Sam Wilkinson who organised a month-log trail with Villa back in 2019, which started off Jamie’s pro career. Jamie has also earned his first full New Zealand cap this year. Takapuna are again being coached by Chris Milicich, who will need little introduction after his many years of working with New Zealand age group teams and at national league level. Chris has an extensive and successful coaching record at both international with the New Zealand U21’s, and at National League and local club levels. His experience, and his passion for developing youth players, A date has now been set for 50th anniversary celebrations for Melville AFC, which was originally formed back in 1972 (and became Melville United in 1996 following amalgamation with Waikato United. Celebrations will be held on the weekend of November 4-6, with full details still to be finalised about the programme. Watch our website for details. We have been drawn against Waiheke United in the final 16 of the Chatham Cup and this tie will be played at Gower Park on July 9, making it our fourth successive home match in league and cup. In April we beat Waiheke 6-1, thought they are expected to be slightly harder in the cup, where they are not constrained by U19 and eligibility regulations. Enjoy the match! Batesy

Sam Says Home games seem to be a bit like London buses at the moment, you go weeks with out one and then suddenly four in a row turn up. After a pleasing result in the cup against a young and spirited East Coast Bays side, we turn our attention back to the league. I understand the temptation to start second guessing potential league placings and results at this stage of the season, but without wanting to sound like a broken record…

our only focus will be on the next game. We are a team that thrives on playing with a “cup final mentality” and that must continue. Recently, we've tried to have a lighter couple of weeks of training in order to freshen up the players and stay on top of niggly injuries. At this point of the season, it is always a balancing act between keeping sharpness levels high and giving players adequate recovery time. Hopefully we’ve got that balance right, as we are going to be faced with a hectic few months to finish the season. Sadly, today we bid farewell to an outstanding player and man in Logan Wisnewski. Logan joined the club in 2017 and has made a fantastic contribution both on and off the pitch during his time with us. He has consistently played with a high skill level and a tremendous work ethic and he will be sorely missed as he heads overseas to play in the World University Futsal games (If you get a spare minute, Logan would love to tell you about the all study he’s been doing at Uni). We wish Logan all the very best and hope to see him back out on Gower Park at some stage.

Welcome to Chris and Grant and the Takapuna team. Takapuna gave us a tremendously tough battle earlier in the season. They are a well organised and tenacious team with a tremendous spirit, we will be prepared for another intense game today. Enjoy the game! Wilky

Cup dream lives on Melville strolled into the final 16 of the Chatham Cup with an entertaining 6-1 win over northern league division one club East Coast Bays at Gower Park. It was the fourth time this season that goal-happy Melville have won for five goals or more, and the second week in succession. And they did it with top goalscorer Oliver Colloty kept in cotton wool on the bench for the first 73 minutes, While Raheem Hunter, Liam Hayes, Harry Rose and Moh Reynolds were al absent. Bays, cup-winners in 2008, are in a rebuilding phase but they were full of running and endeavour. But on a greasy wet surface they fell behind in the 13th minute to a diving jack-knife header from Stafford Dowling from a fine right wing cross from Jerson Lagos. Midway through the second half Melville struck a purple patch, effectively putting the game to bed with goals from Campbell Brown, two from Kieran Richards, and one from Lagos. Sub Ryen Lawrence added a tasty sixth in the 79th minute.

Bays grabbed a consolation goal in the 83rd minute to sub Matthew Beaton, his first for the club. “It was not an easy game,’ Wilkinson said. “It was a step up from Franklin. The score flattered us. Bays were better than some premier teams.” Wilkinson praised Dowling’s work rate and a superb finish. But honoured skipper Aaron Scott, as man-of-the-match who he described as “a benchmark” for the team. Scott was also player of the day the last time Melville faced Bays in the cup, away in 2019, on a day when the Unicorns had two hat-trick strikers in an 8-2 win.
