Chairman's Welcome This week we welcome Wanderers Sports Club and Waikato Unicol for the respective men's and women's first team matches. The derby is always one of the highlights of our northern league campaign. In recent years we have had finishes that have been either thrilling or traumatic, depending on how you see it, and equally as astonishing refereeing controversy. But however the game unfolds, it remains a landmark on our football calendar.

Last year we drew 1-1 at Gower Park thanks to Aaron Scott’s last-ditch header and drew 2-2 away with Kieran Richards nutting home a stunner and Raheem Hunter also scoring. There was only one game in 2020 – the infamous ref-forgot-the-rules shambles at Porritt Stadium which Wanderers won 2-0. In 2019 we lost 0-1 at home with Tommy Semmy snatching a late winner, but then thumped Wanderers 5-0 away. We enter today’s match with Melville playing with the confidence befitting a team that is second on the table, and hopefully, this will generate further confidence as we seek to replicate our away form at home. Having said that, Wanderers arrive just six points behind and with a game in hand, so they are also having a good start to the season. Wanderers did not have a game last week because of Covid infections. Oliver Colloty is doing well in being second on the golden boot standings with eight goals from 10 games, but it is also worth noting that Melville have had nine different players pop up with goals already this season, something we haven’t seen so much in other recent seasons. At the same stage last year there had been just six goalscorers and five in 2019. At the other end of the park, in our last eight games we have conceded just three goals, despite having had Aaron Scott, Sean Liddicoat, and Raheem Hunter absent at various times. Midweek Franklin beat Oratia 3-0 in the Chatham Cup and have earned the right to host Melville in the second round in a match to be played on Monday June 6 (Queen’s Birthday). At the time of prting it hadn’t been confirmed whether the match would be at Dr John Lightbody Reserve (Escotts Rd, Tuakau), Navigation Homes Stadium in Pukekohe, or the Drury Sports Complex in Drury. Sam Says There’s nothing quite like derby day! While I’m sure both camps have preached the message about it being “just another game”, the reality is that Melville v Wanderers always has a little bit of spice to it! I think the rivalry is fantastic for football in the region and with both teams having made a really good start to the season it should be a lively occasion. I was really pleased with the discipline we maintained last week against North Shore. No game is a gimmie for us in this league and with six U20’s in the starting line up last Saturday it was great to see a mature and organised performance. We’ve been hit with our first wave of injuries and illness over the last fortnight and while I’d obviously love to have our most experienced team out on the pitch in every match, it has provided opportunities for young players who have been patiently waiting for their chance. I do believe we have an obligation as a club to promote our own young players into the first team. While winning will always be the primary focus of first team football, we will continue to strive to balance the need for short term success with long term development.

We are on the cusp of the half-way stage of the season. While it has obviously been a really positive start for us and probably exceeded expectations, there is an awful long way to go! We will continue to just take each game as it comes, particularly in light of the fact that we have a couple of really tough fixtures coming up. Today we face the first of those really tough challenges in Wanderers. Derby rivalries aside, I believe Wanderers probably have the strongest most experienced squad in the league outside of Auckland City. 7-1: A Shore thing for Melville Melville put on a decent dress rehearsal for Saturday’s big northern premier league home derby with Wanderers Sports Club with a 7-1 away win over North Shore United. Melville statistician Ron Anorak said It was Melville’s biggest northern premier league win since tanking Fencibles 7-0 at Gower Park in 2003 (when Sam Wilkinson was playing) while the winning margin for an away match equalled a 6-0 romp over Papatoetoe in 2000 (when a many of the current Melville players had not been born.) It was also The Unicorns’ fifth successive win and fourth successive away victory. So, in short, Melville are doing better than anyone could reasonably have expected after 10 games. Further, their win at Allen Hill Stadium was achieved without usual starters Stafford Dowling, Raheem Hunter, Logan Wisnewski and Sean Liddicoat. Player of the day Ryen Lawrence nabbed two goals and was dead unlucky not to be credited with a hat trick, after referee Ashley Wilson decided a goalkeeper who shipped six other goals would have saved Lawrence’s shot if it had not taken a deflection on the way in. Lawrence also had a goal ruled out for an extremely dubious offside.

This was Lawrence’s first start of the season after nine appearances as sub. The other goals came from defender Braedan Quliter-Phipps - who scored his first for Melville - Oliver Colloty nabbing his eighth of the season, Harry Rose, and Aston Hurd getting his first at this level after coming on as a sub. Coach Sam Wilkinson described the win as “an efficient performance”. “We’re on a nice little run but are not getting carried away,” he said. There are still a lot of points up for grabs.” Apart from Lawrence he also singled out the effort of Josh Galletly in midfield and Rose on the left flank. Wanderers had their match postponed because of Covid but they also had a 6-goal win over Shore a couple of weeks ago, so the teams could be quite evenly matched even when they meet at Gower Park.

To cap a fruitful day the Melville U-23s won 6-0 to remain top of the league.

U-23s go top Matthew D’Hotham De Villiers scored a hat trick as Melville U-23s maintained their one point lead over Auckland City at the top of the reserves league. The other goals came from Thomas Cave, Kalani Veira Gall and a stoppage time effort from Jafar Ali.

Academy round up The Academy visited Northern Rovers in NRFL action at Korikori Park, while the 13s won a high-scoring encounter with Taupo, and the 12s had mixed results. Mixed results for the Division 1 teams, both the Nobs and the As fell to opposition from Claudelands Rovers, while the Corinthians defeated Northern United U23s 1-0. In Division 2 the Bs lost a high-scoring encounter with Huntly Thistle. The Old Boys had the weekend off after their match was called off. Tales with Tarena After battling through illness and injury a Jet Limled team managed a much-improved performance off the back of effort. The challenge for our younger players stepping up into senior football is the relentless commitment required to give ourselves the chance to compete. Every play for 90 minutes, every week. So the challenge this week is to back up with the same level of effort that we put out last week. Effort gives us a chance, but alongside that we have the added opportunity to start building our own identity. We are acutely aware that we are trying to build this plane while we are flying it. And this has meant we have had a different formation and different line up with different players every week. And that's tough, there is no doubt about it. But if you look a little bit further we have managed to establish U13, U14, U16 Girls teams as well as three Senior Women's teams. We have seven female coaches working in amongst those teams, who are all committed to growing who we are over the next couple of years. I am involved in most of those teams and coach against a lot of clubs and I don't come across too many female-coached teams across the country. So collectively we need to be proud of what we have started and keep being brave in our pursuit of creating a female pathway for all elements of the game. So now is a good time to recognise our gratitude for the incredible club women who have held this space year after year, giving us a platform for us to build upon. So to Andrea Timings and Nadia Allen thank you for allowing and supporting us to grow. Good luck to all of our female teams across the weekend. Tarena
