Chairman's Welcome This weekend we welcome Auckland United, a team we have never beaten in the northern premier league since their inception as a combination of Onehunga Sports and Three Kings at the start of the 2020 season. And on Sunday our women's first team Otumoetai in the W-League. You may recall the same opposition last weekend, but this iwe will face their "reserve" side who competing in the same competition.

Last year we lost 1-0 away and there was no home game through COVID, and in 2020 in our only other meeting, we lost 3-1 at home. It was a surprise to see Auckland United drop points with a 1-1 away draw against bottom-placed Waiheke last week, after beating Wanderers a week earlier, though that was perhaps a reminder of how unpredictable this league can be. Meanwhile our home win last week was a real tonic after three victories away from home. Last week we also hosted a very successful stakeholders day with a Melville academyorientated presentation for sponsors and representatives of funding agencies, which was facilitated by club patron and Hamilton East MP Jamie Strange. Hamilton Mayor Paula Southgate was also in attendance along with MPs and city councillors, and the occasion was very well received. This was an important exercise for the club in relationship building as we continue to plan for future facility redevelopment at Gower Park. On this subject, the work Auckland United have done in building eye-catching new clubrooms at their home ground of Keith Hay Park has been of great interest to us. We have a third successive home game next week, and at the time of writing our plan was to make it a real club day by having our premier women play their Kate Sheppard Cup knockout match against Onehunga Sports at 11am, followed by reserves and first team games against Eastern Suburbs. # At today’s after-match, a presentation will be made to Liam Hayes - one of the club’s real personalities - for having made 100 major appearances for Melville. Liam made his first team debut as substitute in the final match of Melville’s 2014 season, so his has been one of the most wide-spanning centuries in terms of chronological time, given we are now nine seasons on. Sam Says Every game is a cup final! That’s the mentality that we have been preaching this week. We come into todays game off the back of two really positive results. But, as we have learned many times over, the moment we start thinking we’ve cracked it is the moment we will come unstuck. We have to constantly be the toughest and hardest working team on the pitch in every single game if we are going to achieve anything this season Last week’s match against Western Springs was very typical of this season. A tight contest against similar sides that could have probably swung either way. Thankfully we were able to show a bit of quality in the key moments at each end of the pitch and get the points secured. It was fantastic to have Luke Searle back on the pitch against Springs, he’s worked incredibly hard to comeback from his ACL surgery and his presence on the pitch and in the changing room has given us a real boost. A special mention today for Liam Hayes who makes his 100th First Team appearnace. With the club-hopping nature of modern football, 100 appearances is a massive achievement. Over the last six years we’ve seen Hayesy progress from “Captain Headless” to a mature and balanced “Mr Reliable”, a truly remarkable development. Hayesy’s been a fantastic player for us and a really strong character on and off the pitch - hopefully he pops up with another goal today to mark the occasion.
Welcome back also to our Assistant Coach and Academy Manager - Harry Trethowan. Harry's back from his mid-season vacation. For those of you that don’t know Harry, check out his social media posts...he puts out some really good stuff... A warm welcome to Jose and the Auckland United squad. Hugs all round as Melville win No-frills stopper Luke Searle showed he was a hard man with a soft centre after nutting home an 80th minute header in Melville’s 3-1 win over Western Springs Searle did the business at the far post and then peeled away to hug his mum Lisa on the sideline as Melville closed in on their first home win of the northern premier league season, in what was his first start after returning from a year-long injury. “Aaawwwww,” swooned the uncharacteristically empathetic deck crowd. However, Melville coach Sam Wilkinson wasn’t totally sold on the idea. “I’m not sure that’s quite the image I want for a big strapping centre-half,” Wilkinson mused. “But if Luke can play like that every week and keep scoring those goals he can do what he likes.” However, Melville club captain Phil Wheatley embraced Searle’s new-found hugginess. “We are a family club and nothing says ‘family’ more than giving your mum a big hug after you score,” he said. “Bottom line is it has to be better than hugging Liam Hayes.” Searle was later named player of the day for his efforts. Melville made a fine start when they pressured at the near post from a corner and the ball ended up in the net. Raheem Hunter sought to claim the goal but the referee credited it as an own goal.
Springs drew level 10 minutes later, but Melville were soon back in front thanks to an Oliver Colloty penalty after Jerson Lagos made a mazy dribble into the box and was fouled. Colloty now has six goals this season, putting him one behind Auckland City’s Angus Kilkolly in the race for the golden boot. Wilkinson was impressed with Jerson’s continued improvement and singled out Colloty and Liam Hayes – who again avoided a booking – as Melville’s other top performers. Max Tommy also pulled off one remarkable top-corner save when Melville were just 21 up. “This was a text book performance from us and a good team effort where everybody was at least a 7.5 out of 10,” Wilkinson said.
U-23s miss chance to go top Melville missed a chance to go top of the Premier Reserves league when held to a 1-1 draw by Western Springs. Sub Jakob England scored for Melville in the 70th minute but Springs replied 11 minutes later. Melville are now one point behind Birkenhead, who defeated previous leaders Auckland City 5-1.
U13s win big The Academy U13s were off to a winning start in the WaiBOP Y-League accounting for cross-town rivals Claudelands Rovers. Meanwhile, it was another tough weekend in the NRFL Youth League with only the U15s picking up a point in the fixtures with Eastern Suburbs. Feds suffer first defeat
The Feds travelled to Papamoa looking to add to the win against Te Awamutu last week. There were changes to the starting lineup and the early stages of the game were dominated by Papamoa who converted in the 5th minute The early spell of dominance didn’t stop there however as Brayden Mace tugged down the Papamoa target man for a penalty, which was duly converted in the 11th minute. The remainder of the first half was much the same as Melville struggled to hold possession and find attacking outlets in the Papamoa half. In the second half Melville enjoyed more possession but were unable to finish their chances. Two goals to Papamoa in the 66th and 80th minutes killed the match with the hosts running out 4-0 winners. Melville stay on the road this weekend as they face Tauranga Old Blues in Welcome Bay.
Waikato wrap It was a bleak weekend for Waikato Division sides with only the Nobs registering a point for Melville United. We go again After a difficult day at Gower Park against Otumoetai last week. We face the same opposition this weekend, albeit with different personnel on both sides, including me coming back out of retirement for the eighth time! We are a super young squad with willing hearts and we are committed to growing over the next 18 months. Sometimes that will require us to stare defeat in the eye and learn from what she has to teach us. This week we have some urgent fixes that we have identified that will help us not concede as many goals from direct play. I am looking forward to getting a little bit better again this week and although last week's score might not reflect our ability on the ball. I actually thought we were really tidy and found some nice combinations to retain possession. The challenge now is to be more creative once we have secured it and to play quicker into dangerous parts of the field. We get up and we go again.
