Chairman's Welcome This weekend we welcome Western Springs on Saturday for a fixture where Melville will be desperate to replicate the form they have shown away from home this season. And on Sunday our women's first team will have their first home game of the season in the WaiBOP WLeague against Otumoetai. Our 6-1 away win over Waiheke last weekend was a real tonic after the disappointment of our home loss to Manukau United. Meanwhile Springs arrive fresh from a 1-0 away win over Manukau.
In the corresponding fixture against Springs last season Melville won 5-3, though anyone thinking it bestows some sort of advantage should also note that all the Melville goalscorers on that day (Jama Boss, Lachie McIsaac, Moh Reynolds and Ollie Valentine) are no longer with the club. Western Springs feature Wade Molony, who was a Melville player when we won the northern league division one in 2018. Already this season Wade has equalled the two goals he scored for Melville in 2018. Congratulations to Campbell Brown, Oliver Colloty, and Josh Galletly, who were invited to participate in a New Zealand men's U20 Northern ID game at North Harbour Stadium midweek - unfortunately Josh was a late withdrawal due to Covid. On the subject of absent players, we will be missing Sean Liddicoat today after he picked up a hamstring injury last week. Colloty is currently second on the golden boot standing in the northern premier league with five goals from six matches, just one behind Auckland City’s Angus Kilkolly. (Top scorer for Western Springs is Oscar Browne with three.) A word of acknowledgement of the fine form our Reserve team has shown this season. We go into today's match top equal with Auckland City. Sean Leadley is the team’s top scorer with seven goals (including two last week), followed by Aston Hurd with four. The roll-out of floodlighting for the Gower No 1 pitch is due to start in September and is expected to be complete by December. The lighting is required as part of Gower Park being a training venue for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Sam Says Three wins and three loses...if I take my Melville cap off its probably a fair reflection of where we are currently at as a team. We’ve had some really positive results but also a couple that we’ve probably let slip away from us. The fact that we’ve consistently created chances in every game has been really pleasing from my point of view and it was really nice to see us put a few of those chances away last week against Waiheke United.
The Waiheke trip is a really long day from a travel stand-point, the lads dealt with that challenge exceptionally well, and the only real disappointment from the day was losing Sean Liddicoat to a hamstring injury (that and Danny Milner’s dancing!).
I commented to one the coaching staff last week that we’d dodged a bit of a bullet with Covid so far this season. Right on cue, we’ve been hit with three cases this week...I should learn to just keep my mouth shut! I’ve been preaching to the younger members of the squad about the need for patience and that they will get opportunities as the season progresses. With injuries and Covid, those opportunities will present themselves over the next couple of weeks. It is vital that players keep hold of the shirt once they get their chance. Welcome to Chris and Western Springs. Springs are a side that has given us some really tough battles over the last couple of seasons and we will expect nothing different today. Melville so at home away from home
Melville registered one of their biggest away wins at northern premier league level with a 6-1 thrashing of Waiheke United. Melville historian Ron Anorak said while it equalled a 5-0 away win over Wanderers in 2019 in terms of margin, in terms of victory where six goals or more were netted in a Melville northern premier league away match you have to go back to April 21, 2012 and a 6-1 win over Waitakere City at Fred Taylor Park. On that occasion Melville’s goalscorers included later-to-be All Whites Ryan Thomas and 4-goal hero Tyler Boyd. And in terms of Melville’s northern league matches more generally, it was the first time fiver different Melville names have been on the scoresheet since an 11-0 home win over Oratia on March 24, 2018. It was Melville’s third successive away win, though they now face the proposition of three home games at Gower Park – starting with Western Springs on Saturday - where they have yet to register a point. “I’d rather have an away game at the moment,” said coach Sam Wilkinson, even after eight hours of travel on the day.
Melville’s goalscorers were Oliver Colloty, Liam Hayes, Quinton Kipara, Stafford Dowling and Harry Rose. It was Kipara’s first goal for Melville, just Rose’s second, and only Hayes’ third in his past 57 appearances. Melville’s opener was credited as an own-goal, but not before Logan Wisnewski lobbied furiously for his deflected cross to be credited to him. Wisnewski has not scored since the Chatham Cup semifinal in 2019. Bookmakers’ odds on Hayes, Kipara, Rose and Wisnewski all scoring in the same match would have been gargantuan. Wisnewski at least had the consolation of being named player of the day for Melville, for another tidy showing in midfield. Wilkinson said he always felt confident against a spirited Waiheke team, though also had some reservations. “I actually felt we were better versus Manukau (a week earlier) in terms of creating well-constructed attacks.” The only downer for Melville was an early hamstring injury to Sean Liddicoat, which may see him sidelined for up to four weeks.
U-23s continue winning ways Zeya Hussaini’s Melville Reserves remain top-equal with Auckland City in the Premier U23 (Reserves) League after a 2-0 away win over Waiheke United. A goal in each half to Sean Leadley did the trick.
Academy back in action The NRFL Youth Leagues are back underway following the Easter and Anzac long weekends. Melville United will be away to Eastern Suburbs at Ngahue Reserve. And the WaiBOP U13 competition kicks off this weekend with Melville hosting Claudelands Rovers. Feds topple Te Awamutu
Melville United Federation took on Te Awamutu last weekend, in a bid to seek revenge for the 2-0 loss away in pre-season. The Feds had one target in mind, and that was to get a win on the board for the season. Melville dominated the early stages of the game and played one of the best spells of football we have seen all season to date. Melville capitalized after an early spell of possession, with a towering header from Carson off the back of a free-kick inside 10 minutes. Melville continued their early dominance to go 2-0 up as the result of a through ball and a clinical lobbed finish by Walker. The goalscoring didn’t stop there as Halley rounded the keeper to add a third before halftime. Melville appeared to take their foot off the gas for the remainder of the first half, with Te Awamutu enjoying a spell of possession and a few near-miss opportunities including one off the post from their target man, Ball. The half ended with a last man challenge by Carson, who was shown a yellow card. Melville had a slow start to the second half as Te Awamutu managed to get on the scoresheet after the hour, with plenty of time left on the clock for a run at some points. A few changes to the Melville team due to injury saw the team lose a bit of composure, as Te Awamutu threatened in multiple spells. A late substitution saw Melville give their reserve 'keeper a run, who rose high on multiple occasions to defend a series of crosses from Te Awamutu. The latter stages of the game saw Melville lose a bit of composure, which ended in a few yellow cards. Melville defended multiple Te Awamutu attempts, to hold on to victory, the first of the season. The Feds are on the road for the next three games and look to earn points away from home against Papamoa, Tauranga and Ngongotaha.
Waikato Cup action In the Waikato Knockout Cup Melville Mighty As beat Waihi 2-0 with goals from Richie Newall and David Brennan. Melville Bs beat Claudelands Rovers 1-0 thanks to a Dane Mitchell goal. And Melville Corinthians beat Ngaruawahia 3-1 with goals to Josh Groom (2) and Nathan Wilson. But the once-proud Nobs were rolled 3-2 by Waikato Unicol, which even led to muttering that Neil Mouncher, 65, may no longer be the best goalkeeper in the club. t's back to league action this weekend. Women's wrap We are looking forward to building on our first game of the season and bouncing back from being outmuscled by Unicol. We played some nice football but we have to get a little bit grittier, in our mentality and physically. We had moments where we were dangerous in possession and had we been a little more patient we could have looked to play in behind and utilise our pace. We continue to build combinations between our senior players and those that are stepping into the senior women's game for the first time. Today we welcome back our under 17 players from their recent New Zealand ID Camp for the first home game of the season. It's also great to get a home draw in the Kate Sheppard Cup, but before then we welcome Otumoetai and give all our best to our Academy Girls on Saturday, as well as our Reserves and Epics who are all back in action this weekend!
