SUSAN
WALLIS HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE | 2025
UNIQUE ENCAUSTIC PAINTINGS
As another year comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the moments I’m most grateful for. Many of them are rooted in stillness—quiet time spent in nature, taking in the serenity of a frozen lake, watching snow settle softly across the forest floor, or pausing to observe wild animals moving with effortless calm.
Bringing that sense of quiet into everyday life is one of my guiding intentions in these pieces. My hope is that by translating this feeling of stillness onto the canvas, it can find its way into our homes and sanctuaries, offering a moment of peace whenever it’s needed.
In this holiday guide, I’ve selected a few of my favourite pieces in the hope that they bring warmth, light, and a sense of calm into your home.
Wishing you a safe and happy holiday season!

Every holiday season, I choose a local cause to support by donating one of my paintings. This year, I am delighted to contribute Keeper of the Twilight (10 x 10 inches, retail value $450.00) to Melt Studio + Gallery’s exhibition assistance initiative. The funds raised from this raffle will be given to a young artist in an early stage of their career, providing them with the ability to exhibit their work at Melt Studio + Gallery for one month. You can purchase raffle tickets online or in person at Melt Studio + Gallery.

Probably the best-known examples of encaustic art are the Fayum funeral portraits, which date back to the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. These remarkable works are attributed to Greek painters who settled in Egypt, particularly in the Faiyum basin, after Alexander the Great's conquest.
The term "encaustic" comes from the Greek word enkaustikos, meaning "to burn in." It refers to the ancient medium of mixing molten wax with oil pigment, a technique that creates a luminous, durable surface. This process, used for millennia, continues to captivate viewers today.
To care for your encaustic painting, periodically dust the surface lightly with a lint-free cotton cloth and keep it away from extreme temperatures, including freezing or excessive heat. Encaustic paintings are versatile and can even be hung in bathrooms or over fireplaces, adding beauty to a variety of spaces.
