I would like to welcome you to our 35th Anniversary Reunion Celebration...to our readers, welcome to our special anniversary addition of Got Life.

I can’t believe that 31 years ago my family came to Life Temple, as it was named then. I can’t say that I was excited about leaving my friends back in Fort Worth, or the exciting little world I had there.

31 years and many friends later, I have to say that the move was a good one!

About four months after moving to Houston, I was filled with the Holy Ghost and baptized in Jesus name. A week later my little sister was born.

One thing about those early days that have stayed with me, Life Temple believed in children getting saved filled up saved, lol.

Dr. Robbi Warren, a former member and our Thursday night speaker, would preach to me every time he saw me. “Little girl, you can’t be preaching and you ain’t got the Holy Ghost! When you gonna get baptized?”

It seemed like he asked me that for years. But it was just a few months.

He was one of several people who constantly stayed on me about being saved - and I was just 5 years old.

To this day, I’m grateful for those saint’s commitment to ensuring that I was saved at a young age.

Today, that urgency and desire for the saints of God to instill in our children that desire to have a personal relationship with God at a young age has been passed onto me. And I know that this is also the desire of our Bishop.

The world is pulling at our children and youth, but we must pull harder with love, prayer, teaching, and fasting.

Let’s take our generation, the young and old, back for the Kingdom!

From the Bishop’s heart………

Thirty one years ago, as a young lady coming to a new city, with a new body of believers to meet, and our second daughter on the way, was more than a notion. I would never have dreamed that Houston would become my home, but it did. Our baby daughter was born and dedicate here in Houston. She is now married, and if the Lord says the same I will be a grandmother in October.

Praise the Lord! Both daughters are grown and productive in their career.

I also would never have dreamed that one day I would be a Pastor, and enjoying the city of Houston as I do. I am blessed and enjoy being the under Shepherd of some of God’s greatest saints.

I welcome all to come and lift the name of the Lord, our Savior Jesus Christ. This week, I pray, will be a life time of reminisce and fellowshipping, as well as heart searching, and a renewing of our mind, soul and spirit. I will give God praise and glory in advance for what He will do. Our theme for this Church Anniversary is “The Heartbeat of God”.

Looking back and seeing

where the Lord has brought us, I know He has a purpose and plan for this group of believers, and in this community.

Even though many people have come and gone, and through many valleys and mountains I have come, yet I have seen the goodness of the Lord through it all.

This Church had a unique beginning. It was founded in April 1976 by Pastor James Kilgore, and the first service was held on May 2, 1976 with about forty in attendance. On January 13, 1980 Pastor Joe W. Perry was installed as the permanent Pastor.

The name “Life Temple Church UPC” was change in 1983 to “New Life Temple Church.” The growth in membership caused a new sanctuary to be built in 1984.

In 1996 Bishop Joe W. Perry, and some of the saints from the Church, had an opportunity and privilege to travel to South Africa and Zimbabwe.

New Life Temple has always been supportive of missions foreign and at home. Even from the seeds, we have sown money as well as labor. We give honor to our late Brother in Christ, Apostle Derek Hubbard, for being

our first Missionary from this Church. Today the Lord has blessed Pastor Melinda A. Perry to be our liaison for the work we have and are doing in Kenya. She has a very deep and rich passion for the souls that are in Africa. She also works with other countries in Africa outside of Kenya.

The vision for New Life Temple is to network with other churches in this area of all denominations to help evangelize the hopeless, the lost, and battered and bruised.

South Park has a very high rating in drugs, HIV and crime. God’s Church has the answer, and there no time for us to dispute over minor things. NLT is also extending a hand to surrounding schools. We have opened our doors in reaching out to the senior citizens with five days a week of activities.

Our goal this year is to work with other organizations in reaching out to our children in helping to develop the total being. We have started to purchase the surrounding property for our new sanctuary. We will remodel the current one into a fellowship hall.

As senior Pastor, my heart’s desire is to please

God, and to stay focused on His purpose and His heartbeat. My greatest joy is seeing new souls come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, and developing men and women for the work of God. The New Life Temple Church Family, and I, salutes the following men of God, and their family for venturing out and starting new congregations: Pastor H. Jenkins; Pastor W. Smith; Bishop F.L. Mosley and Pastor J. Cormier.

I want to personally thank these men of God, the late Daniel Caulk and Bishop Joe W. Perry, who were before me, for their love of labor to the founder Bishop James L. Kilgore.

To God is the glory for all that He has done.

Charter Member, Elder Katherine Bates, shares with us……..

I, being somewhat of a new comer to New Life Temple Church (NLTC), can only imagine what 35 years in the life of this God ordained church must hold. I can only image the many marvelous moments in our Lord’s presence the members must have experienced.

As I wondered,I decided to talk with someone who has been here since the inception of New Life Temple Church. Someone who could share a bit of what those past

years have meant to her, so I spent time talking to Elder Katherine Bates.

Q: We now live in a society where church hopping is the norm.

Yet you have been at NLTC for 35 years. What has kept you Elder Bates and her six children here? are charter members of NLTC. And A: I have remained at NLTC because of NLT’s commitment to it is with much thanksgiving and God, and His kingdom work. NLT prayer that all six: David, Kenneth, has become my extended family – Marva, Pamlar, Nancy, and Clayton and you just don’t leave your are still active in our Lord’s work. family.

Five of the six are still here. As we talked, I asked her a few questions that I would like to share her responses (in italics) with you.

Q: Looking back over 35 years, what is your most remembered event at NLT? A: Thirty-five years hold so many wonderful events, so giving you just one is difficult. So, if I may, let me tell you about a few that I hold dear. The first was the burning of the church’s mortgage papers. With the burning of those papers God again showed us that with Him all things are possible. The second was the baptizing of two churches, including the Pastors, in the name of Jesus. The entire congregations went down in the name of Jesus.

Heaven rejoices with one. Can’t you imagine what a time they had with that many? Then there was the time when we were recognized as number two in the UPC in giving to mission. Our church has always been a financial supporter of foreign mission. There are so many more accomplishments, so many more blessings, but I will stop here.

Q: Was it very difficult for you to become Pentecostal in your beliefs?

A: No, I did not have a problem in changing my beliefs. God had been working on me and leading me before time. When lead me to the Pentecostal doctrine and beliefs, I knew that was the answer.

Q: What is your favorite bible verse, and why?

A: Well, you know all of them are good. (smile) Let’s start with Isaiah 1:16-18 that says “ Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; 17 Learn to do

well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. 18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. 19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: 20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

This scripture holds my heart because it shows me my state of being before I accepted God. We must learn Him and obey Him. My greatest desire was for me and my household to go a different way from how we had been going.

Psalms 139 is awesome to me because it tells me that God knows everything. He knows ALL things.

Then there is Philippians 4: 4-7 which tells me to “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice. 5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. 6 Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus”. You see I can always rejoice because the Lord is always at hand. When I ask of Him, I believe it will be done.

Therefore, I will give Him thanks even before it is manifested. When

I keep my focus on Him, peace I will always have.

Q: As an Elder, what do you feel is your most important service to the NLT family?

A: I want very much to encourage people and help build their faith. I want to help them to allow Christ to be revealed to them as the true and loving God that he is.

Q: As a charter member, you know where NLTC has journeyed from. What have you envisioned for NLT in the future?

A: I envision NLT as being a “soul saving service station”. I envision us walking more in the Spirit. I envision seeing God manifested more in this family of believers. We need more of God. When his spirit speaks to us, with our whole heart we will agree and our answer will be “Yes, Lord, yes”.

I, for one, am guilty of being selfish and lacking candid selflessness at times. Matter of fact, particularly April 15, 2011, as I was leaving my Christian Heritage class at 8:50 in the morning to head to another class for 9:05, a friend of mine playfully took MY golden banana that I had set aside from breakfast from the side of my backpack, peeled its shiny coat off, and had a personal feast.

Now I, remembering how demanding my cravings and wants for food could be at odd hours of the day, looked at her in the most saved way possible, and was like "HOLD UP! Boo Really?" I don't play when it comes to food; however, I noticed that something as minor as a banana that I could easily get again could have upset me for

no apparent reason. That is senseless. I know that's physical food, but what about the spiritual food we should be sharing with our other brothers and sisters on this hungry and thirsty planet? Why are we not sharing the Gospel of Christ, as we should be doing anyway, with them but rather letting them suffer from malnutrition and starvation spiritually?

We have to stop nonchalantly sitting our plump, holy rumps on the pews and share the crème de la crème with the world. It’s clear to us: “Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in Him!” (Psalms 34:8). But just as it is unfair for the rich to get richer, it is unfair for the saved to get fuller. Not saying more about God is bad.

However, if we are constantly getting filled with God’s Truth and Word, we eventually have to deposit it somewhere.

But when is eventually, and where is somewhere?

Is eventually later? Are we just going to share the light with more saints and more of the saved?

As a whole, we all, including me, should be sharing the Truth with the world; it’s a calling. After all, it is the Truth (or God) that sets people free from their dietary regimen of eating the world's poisonous slop and infected garbage and spoiled food.

And stop worrying about what you do and do not know about the Gospel. You don't need to be a preacher, a teacher, a prophet, a speaker, a pastor, a bishop or a minister to SHARE God's Word. Stick to what you know. Ask God to give you the words to say or the correct approach because He may just want to use you to plant a seed, or water it, or tend to its soil. He's the light that makes things grow anyway. He just wants a willing and open vessel to use. Moses, a man with a speech impediment that felt incapable and inadequate, was used by God in a mighty to not only deliver the people of Israel out of slavery, but also to help share and spread God’s goodness. Think about it: the devil is spreading his lies, confusion, mischief, and havoc throughout this entire world. Why is his kingdom growing?

BACKWARDS! The truth remains true if it is told or not. However telling it is so much more effective, more powerful and life changing.

Forget about silence because that does just as much harm as telling a lie. Just SHARE because we are to

be the salt of the earth and make the nations thirst and hungry for the Almighty God. "God loves a cheerful giver." 2 Corinthians 9:7. Not just pertaining to money but your time, your energy, your passion, your heart, your mind and your ability to SHARE! God is the only one I know that shares a joy that is unexplainable, a peace that could quell any pain, a love that continues to love in spite

And what remains puzzling is that even when we aren’t sharing this Good News, this Gospel, this Truth, He still manages to share His all with us because He loves us that much, sinner and saint. Missions Is Our History

If there was one word that I would use to describe the history of New Life Temple Church, it would be “missions”. I dare to even say that it could be our legacy in short.

I can’t really remember the first missionary I met as a child. But I do remember one instance when there was an announcement of a female missionary from Africa, Zimbabwe I believe, who would be with us in service. It seemed as if everyone was talking about this woman. I remember the Bates family singing a song she had taught them on her previous visit to the church.

Hearing about this remarkable woman, I couldn’t wait for the mission service. As I sit here now writing this, I can’t even really remember much about that Sunday evening service, but I do remember that the greatest impression ever made on my life was then!

Some kids dream of meeting the president, or even becoming president one day. I always felt that was a very low aim in life. For me, from that day forth I dreamed of being a missionary. I guess I was about 5 or 6 years old.

My dream of becoming a Kingdom Ambassador was constantly being feed. I’m sure it was not the case, but it seemed like every month a missionary came by.

And each time they would announce we were having Mission’s Sunday I would get excited. Even as a child I would cry as the

missionaries shared stories of souls being saved or showed films of the souls they had been called to reached. That was probably the only time I cried in church back then.

And everyone knew that when the missionaries came, it meant a time to sow financially. But I never heard anyone complain about having to give to another missionary.

I guess I was about 7 or 8 the first time my parents took their first mission trip. I think I was slightly hurt that they didn’t take me with them. I mean they could take me with them when they went to other cities or states, so why couldn’t I go with them to Venezuela?

Yep, I was different!

One day I would leave them while I went on a mission trip, and see how they liked that. The mind of a child.

As the church grew, so did our support of missions. In fact I have to wonder, is the growth of our church connected to our passion for missions? All of my childhood and teen years, NLTC was headlong in Home and Foreign Missions.

As I reflect on my life growing up in the church, I realize that my life parallels that of a kid growing up in a diplomatic household. It seemed that there were always “ambassadors” staying in our home or being entertained by my parents.

I can even remember when we lived in Fort Worth and my father

brought home a pastor from India. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. Our first April in Houston, I can remember this same pastor visiting our church. I remember because it was while he was preaching in children church that I received the Holy Ghost. Another event that marked my heart for missions.

I miss the days when the walls of our current sanctuary were lined with missions plaques from around the world. The Missions Department was just as important as any other ministry at the church.

For a while it seemed as if those days were history. But I believe that the days of our roots are springing back up. At the moment it may look like a stump. But if you look closely, you will see a few buds growing on the stump.

There is a new generation of Kingdom Ambassadors being positioned. Some will serve on the home front while others will be sent to the fields.

The Late Apostle Derek Hubbard was the first Ambassador commissioned from this post, and there are more to follow as we continue in living out our history.
