Senior LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Stressed-out Senior Dear Editor, I am writing to you about a situation that makes one of the most important tasks of a teenager’s life stressful. When I started senior year, everyone was talking about applying to colleges.

Unfortunately, most of these conversations ended up being about how difficult it is to apply.

Oftentimes, when we get to this part in our lives where we are expected to choose what we want to do with the rest of our lives, we

have no clue where or what we want to study.

We go our whole lives being told to follow our dreams, but we are never told what to do when we don’t know what those are. In the U.S., we feel the pressure to go straight to college, even when we don’t know what we want to study.

It is unfair to expect us to apply to colleges without any help. It’s like throwing a baby into a pool expecting it to be Michael Phelps.

Overworked by Homework Dear Editor, I think high schools should eliminate homework. There is no proof that homework improves school performance. When an adult gets done after working an eight plus hour day of work, most don’t have to go back to work the second they get home.

Since most adults don’t have homework, why do we need to have it? Homework should be optional, and

teachers should encourage it. If the kids don’t want to do it, then it won’t help them; it’s their responsibility, and it shouldn’t be forced by the teacher.

Having homework also doesn’t help the fact that a lot of teens are sleep deprived, especially in high school.

If homework can’t fully be eliminated, then it should be reduced and up to the student if they want to set themselves up for success or not.

Dear Editor, I strongly believe that there is a key issue with the way school is run.

Students are forced to spend seven and a half hours in school every day. In those seven and a half hours of school, three of them are spent in electives. I believe that electives shouldn’t be required in school, but optional for those who want to take them.

Why make us achieve an art credit before we graduate? If we don’t plan on doing anything with

art in our future, then why must we spend the time and effort in an art class where the teacher most likely won’t give you an A. even if you try your hardest? The bottom line is that we are being forced to take all of these classes that aren’t necessary to get into college, and we could easily be doing better things with that time.

There’re so many ways to contribute to the world, and we could do that with those extra three hours every day.

Eliminating Exinction Dear Editor, Many global issues around the world include the environment.

Biodiversity is a big problem today.

Extinction is causing the diversity in wildlife to drastically fall. It has been known for a long time, but still human activity has been causing massive extinctions. For example, pollution has had a major effect on animals and extinction.

The current extinction rate is

now approaching a thousand times the background rate and may climb up to 10,000, if present trends occur.

In different parts of the world, species face different levels and types of threats. The main reason is habitat loss and destruction.

Biodiversity and extinction need to be paid more attention or else it will become more of an issue than it already is.
