The Riverfront Community Center is a charming Union Depot train station on the banks of the Missouri River. Originally constructed in 1888, this historic depot was lovingly restored and remodeled in 1988 as a multi-functional facility. It is a 20-to 45-minute drive from most areas of Kansas City. This classic facility provides an ideal atmosphere for all special events, from weddings and receptions to seminars and meetings. The Riverview Room Aptly named for its beautiful views of the majestic Missouri River, this elegant banquet room can seat 80 to 250 guests for a reception.

An adjoining outdoor patio overlooks the river.

The Men’s Waiting Room Impressive 30-foot wood-paneled ceilings soar above the original fixtures, woodwork and fireplace. The Men’s Waiting Room can accommodate a wedding ceremony for up to 160 people or a smaller reception for up to 80 people. This room also boasts a river view.

The Women’s Waiting Room Adjacent to the Riverview Room, this cozy room is a smaller version of the Men’s Waiting Room. The Women’s Waiting Room has versatile side doors that can be opened to access the Riverview Room.

Harvey Girl Luncheons A lovely lunch is served at the Riverfront Community Center by the Harvey Girls, followed by a brief history of Fred Harvey and his train depot restaurants from the 1800s. Leavenworth Landing Park This scenic park on the Missouri River (Esplanade & Cher10th Avenue Park okee Streets) is available to rent for special occasions. Per- 3500 Tenth Ave. mit fees are $15 per hour ($20 Bob Dougherty Park for non-City residents) with 800 N. 2nd St. a $100 refundable damage Buffalo Bill Cody Park deposit. Fees are due when a 3003 Shrine Park Road permit is requested. Choose the Paddlewheel Plaza or the David Brewer Park 1801 Ottawa St. Railroad Roundhouse. Legacy Tree Program Commemorate a special person or event with a living legacy. For a $200 fee, a tree will be planted and a plaque erected at the planting site.

Memorial Bench Program Another way to honor a special person or group is through the purchase of a memorial bench with an attached commemorative plaque. Country Line Dance for Beginners Join Jessica Buntain for a fun evening of cardio while learning popular line dance steps. The class begins with the most popular dances including the Electric Slide and the Cupid Shuffle, and will progress to include more challenging steps like Cop-

LAP SWIM RULES: No one under age 14 admitted into the pool during Lap Swim, unless authorized by the Recreation Program Supervisor. All Lap Swimmers must be able to swim one length of the pool unassisted, using front crawl. Circle swim is required when there are more than two swimmers per lane. Please choose a lane with swimmers equal to your ability.

FLOTATION DEVICES: In order to keep all patrons safe while enjoying the pool, only noodle floats may be used.

Parkour Fitness Training Instructor Robert Bone began practicing Parkour five years ago. Parkour is a holistic training discipline using movement to get from point A to point B in the most efficient way possible. Parkour can include obstacle courses, running, climbing, swinging, vaulting, jumping, and rolling. Intro to Synchronized Swimming Join instructor Suzie Mohrmann as you learn synchronized swimming skills and moves in this NEW introductory class.

Swimming moves such as shark circles, dolphin figures, somersault moves and side flutter kicks and more will be introduced and learned to music while in the water. Participants will learn and perform movements which resemble the skills performed by the gymnast or figure skater. Then, choreographed into a routine will initiate a combination of rhythmic swimming and gymnastics, all done in the water. Participants will use swimming strokes to move from one body position or figure to another. The swimmer will learn to perform move-

Registration/waiver forms will be distributed through the Leavenworth Schools and the Riverfront Community Center. Only those who register by the deadline will be guaranteed to play on a team. Skills Testing for boys and girls ages 9-13 will be held on April 23 at Sportsfield Recreation Complex.

What is the Leavenworth Parks & Recreation Scholarship?

Qualifying individuals or families who live in the city limits of Leavenworth and are currently receiving public assistance may be awarded a $100 account per person per year to be used toward certain Leavenworth Parks & Recreation Department activities.

In 2015, new fencing was added to the Waggin’ Tails Dog Park. The fencing forms a third section. Use of the park will rotate amongst the three sections, leaving one vacant so that grass can be allowed to grow throughout the park.

Who is eligible to receive a scholarship?

Applicants must be residents of the City of Leavenworth. Persons residing outside the city limits of Leavenworth are not eligible.

An individual or head of household with dependents must be receiving some type of public assistance.

Dependents of qualified applicants must be 18 years old or younger and attending school. Dependents are defined as children whom you or your spouse/partner are legal guardians of.

Adults 19 and older must apply for their own scholarship unless they are handicapped.

Only those family members listed as eligible for or receiving benefits will be included on the applicant’s scholarship account.

How do I apply?

1. Get current written proof of the type of assistance you are receiving, residency and dependents.

2. Individual adults or heads of household should bring the document of proof to the Parks & Recreation office (Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and complete and sign the scholarship application.

3. After your application is approved: a. To use your scholarship, the scholarship recipient (parent or guardian of children) must go to the Parks & Recreation Office during regular business hours and make the request. Parents must complete all applicable registration/waiver forms for each activity or program that they or their family members wish to participate in. b. A $5 co-pay must be paid for each activity at the time of registration. Scholarship recipients who issue a bad check will have their scholarship accounts inactivated until the bad check and fees are paid in full. c. Please note that Community Center front desk staff cannot issue scholarship passes or accept scholarship registrations without prior authorization from the Parks & Recreation office. d. Passes will not be issued to children or anyone other than the adults listed on the application. Persons who are incapacitated may give permission for another person to act on their behalf. e. There will be no free replacements for lost passes.

Opening Day at Sportsfield Park, 2015 : Each year at the start of the Youth Baseball/Softball leagues, teams gather together to celebrate the love of sports. Join us for the 2016 celebration. Check our website, www.lvks.org. for more information about Sportsfield Opening Day.

Restrictions 1. Scholarships cannot be used for special programs or promotions, adult athletic leagues, activities not sponsored by the Parks & Recreation Department, or activities with a contracted vendor.

2. Only (1) one 10-punch pass to the Wollman Aquatic Center will be issued per person, per summer on scholarship.

3. Scholarships are good for one year from the application date. A person may receive only one (1) $100 scholarship per year. No portion of this $100 is transferable to any other person, and remaining balances are not carried over into the next year.

4. There are no age restrictions.

5. Scholarship recipients must follow all Parks and Recreation Department rules, regulations, and policies. Failure to do so will result in revocation of scholarship and loss of privileges.

Calendar of Events Leavenworth Parks and Recreation

JANUARY 1-31 - Registration for Indoor Ironman (or woman) Competition to be held February 1-28. A self-paced training opportunity incorporating the three events of a triathlon: Swimming (2.4 miles), bicycling (112 miles), and running (26.2 miles).

Participants will complete a full Ironman throughout February.

FEE: $30 (Includes community center admission in February) FEBRUARY 1-28: Registration for Adult Spring Softball.

FEBRUARY 6 - Hidden Art Locked Away – Art sale featuring works of art created by inmates at Leavenworth area correctional facilities. Fees support the River City Community Players.

FEBRUARY 6 - Pre-Spring Flea Market - 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Exhibitor Set-Up: 6-8 a.m. Riverfront Community Center Gym, Leavenworth. FREE admission. Booth fees $25 electric, $20 nonelectric. Includes 1 six-foot table & chairs. Extra tables $5 each.

FEBRUARY 7 - Daddy & Me Sweetheart Tea - 1-3 p.m.

Little girls and their daddies or big brothers, uncles, grandfathers, etc. will enjoy an afternoon of fun and refreshments. Come to the Riverfront Community Center dressed in your best and have a photo taken with your favorite date. This event is open to little girls ages 9 and under. Register January 4 - February 5 at the community center or on-line at www.lvks.org. NO EVENT DAY WALK-INS ACCEPTED. Limited to 160 persons.

MARCH 19 - FREE Easter Festivities & Egg Hunt Join the Leavenworth Parks and Recreation Department at 10th Avenue Park for their annual Easter Egg Hunt for children age 12 and under. There will be games, activities, petting zoo, bounce house, food vendors, and more. Come early with your Easter basket and get ready for the hunt.

Festivities: 1–2:30 p.m. Egg Hunt: 2:30 p.m. sharp APRIL 29 - Arbor Day Celebration – Parks staff will plant a tree to honor a local person or group. Tree planting at noon. Location to be announced.

MAY 4 - FREE Touch-A-Truck - 10-11:30 a.m.

Bring the children to Leavenworth Landing Park and see the many kinds of trucks working in and around our community.

MAY 7 - FREE First City Fishing Gala. Check-in: 8–9 a.m.

Children ages 6-15 are invited to bring their poles and join in the fun at 80 Acres (formerly Doolittle Farms). The Leavenworth Bass Club will provide everything your child will need to catch a fish, to include assistance if requested. There will be games, contests, prizes, and a fish fry after the derby for all registered participants. Pre-registration required. MAY 14 - First City “Try” Athlon for Children & Teens.

The “Try”athlon is a fun triathlon for children and teens to try their skills at three sports: swimming, cycling, and running.

Every child who finishes the race is awarded a medal and T-shirt.
