Summer 2014
Kids stay active on bikes in 2014 Bicycling is a fun way for children and adults to stay fit. However, in 2010 more than half a million Americans sustained bicycle injuries that required emergency care, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Each summer, the Leavenworth Parks and Recreation Department partners with the Santa Fe Trails Bike Shop to offer Youth Bike Races at Warren Middle School, 3501 New Lawrence Road. This gives children the opportunity to practice good bicycling habits, such as wearing a helmet and paying attention to vehicle traffic. Dates: May 28, June 25, July 9, July 23, (rain date August 6) Time: 6:30 p.m. Fees: Ages 12 and under FREE / Ages 13-18 USCF license fee $10 (may be purchased on site) The Leavenworth County Economic Development Corporation developed maps of bike trails in the area, available at the Riverfront Community Center, 123 Esplanade St. Cover: Children at the Youth Achievement Center get supervision from the Santa Fe Trails Bike Shop during a local ride.
