Kids stay active on bikes in 2014 Bicycling is a fun way for children and adults to stay fit. However, in 2010 more than half a million Americans sustained bicycle injuries that required emergency care, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Each summer, the Leavenworth Parks and Recreation Department partners with the Santa Fe Trails Bike Shop to offer Youth Bike Races at Warren Middle School, 3501 New Lawrence Road.

This gives children the opportunity to practice good bicycling habits, such as wearing a helmet and paying attention to vehicle traffic.

Riverfront Community Center

The Riverfront Community Center, 123 S. Esplanade St., is a beautifully restored 1880s train depot with rooms available for weddings, meetings and special events. A $100 to $300 refundable damage/security deposit is required to confirm reservations. Hourly room rental rates include set-up and take-down of furniture and trash removal. Decorating time is charged at $10 per hour. Table sizes are small round (36 inches) large rounds (60 inches) and rectangular (3 X 6-foot). Other sizes are available. Rental items: Projector system $25, portable screen $10, patio furniture $25, bar or fireplace $25, table skirts $15. Table decorations are also available.

CATERING: Catering options include in-house caterer, Terry Booker, at 913680-1300 or theabcafe@gmail.com. Hiring an outside caterer requires a 20 percent surcharge. Individuals may also rent the kitchens (rates below).

TEMPORARY LIQUOR PERMIT: Cash bars require a temporary liquor permit. Contact the City Clerk, 913-682-9201 or visit the Kansas Department of Revenue, www.ksrevenue.org.

The Riverfront Community Center’s facade will undergo construction in 2014.

Please be patient as the City completes an extensive project to repair decaying stone work that will be done in accordance with state historical building guidelines. Entrances to the community center will be moved to the south side of the building during renovations. Look for marked signs and avoid construction areas.

The Riverview Room can seat up to 300 people.

Beginning Monday, June 2 Bootcamp for Women All fitness levels are welcome to join us for an effective, intense workout that incorporates your body weight, builds strength and burns maximum calories. This fun ladies-only bootcamp has great music that will keep you moving. Don’t be intimidated by the word “bootcamp,” modifications for each exercise are demonstrated. For a complete listing of City parks and facilities, visit www.lvks.org, or call (913) 651-2203. All park and alcohol permits are issued at the Leavenworth Parks and Recreation Office, 123 S. Esplanade St. Leavenworth Landing Park This scenic park on the Missouri River is available to rent for special occasions. Permit fees are $15 per hour ($20 for non-City residents) with a $100 refundable damage deposit. Fees are due when a permit is requested. Choose either the Paddlewheel Plaza or the Railroad Roundhouse. The Bridge Tender’s Building rents for $20, with a $20 refundable key deposit. The park, which is adjacent to the Riverfront Community Center and historic downtown Leavenworth, also connects to the Three-Mile Creek Trail at Leavenworth Landing Park walkway.

Picnic Shelters Rent a shelter for the day at Leavenworth City parks. Picnic tables seat 6-8 people. Extra tables are $5 each. Ray Miller Park shelter has no access to rest room facilities.

Alcoholic Beverage Permit

By City ordinance, alcoholic beverages are prohibited in City parks, except as authorized by Parks and Recreation to Leavenworth area residents with a park reservation permit. There is a $10 alcoholic beverage or beer permit fee.

Game Kits Rent a kit at the Parks and Recreation Office for $5 (and a $20 refundable deposit) for up to 3 days. Includes a volleyball and net, one baseball, two softballs, two bats, three gloves, a football, and a soccer ball.

Adopt-A-Park Program If your group wants to make a difference in our community, consider adopting a Leavenworth city park or other landscaped public area. Participants can choose from a variety of tasks, including reporting vandalism and maintenance problems, picking up litter, painting, weeding or gardening. Donations can also be made for park improvements. City staff will provide guidance and some materials for projects. Contact Julie Anderson, Parks and Recreation Director, at (913) 651-2203, or janderson@firstcity.org. Choose a park and decide which activities you will be able to do and how often. Once this is established, a sign will be erected in the park with your group name and logo.

Legacy Tree Program Commemorate a special person or event with a living legacy.

For a $200 fee, a tree will be planted and a plaque erected at the planting site. Request forms are available at the Parks and Recreation Office. For an additional $200, you may request a 5” x 5” aluminum plaque. For a larger plaque size or dedication bench, please call the Parks and Recreation Department at 913-651-2203.

Riverfront Park Campground This cozy park beside the Missouri River is the perfect place to relax. The campground offers basic and electric camping pads, tent camping, a bath house with four private units, a boat ramp, picnic shelter, and dump station. Two water stations serve this campground. Each person will receive one photo identification card with a season membership. Replacement cards are $5 each. Passes are good for the 2014 season only.

Flotation Devices for Handicapped Persons Only The City of Leavenworth has adopted this policy due to safety concerns. Even an approved flotation device may not always keep a child afloat in a face-up position. Some children become so dependent on the flotation device that this dependency interferes with the development of their personal swimming skills. Flotation devices are not meant to be a substitute for adult supervision. The best way to keep a child safe in the water is for the parent to have their “hands on” the child.

The Leavenworth Parks and Recreation Department provides American Red Cross swim programs for children, teens, and adults taught by certified instructors. Learn-to-Swim classes will be taught at the Riverfront Community Center and Wollman Aquatic Center in June and July. Students must be registered by noon the Friday before the session starts.

This course at Wollman Pool will train candidates on how to teach water safety, which will include basic water rescues and personal water safety, instruction on teaching the Learn to Swim program, Preschool Aquatics, and Parent & Child Aquatics. Prerequisites: Must be age 16 on or before the last day of course. Demonstrate the ability to correctly perform the following swimming strokes: Front crawl – 25 yards; back crawl – 25 yards; breaststroke – 25 yards; elementary backstroke – 25 yards; sidestroke – 25 yards; butterfly – 15 yards. Maintain position of back floating for one minute in deep water. Tread water for one minute.

First City Try-Athlon for Kids & Teens – 8 a.m. Saturday April 26 The “Try” athlon is an introductory swim, bike, and run event for children ages 6-15. This event allows children to utilize all of their skills. Distances are established so that every child will complete the course. Every child will receive a medal. Register at the Riverfront Community Center by April 21. Cost: $20; $5 late fee. Late registrations may not receive a shirt.

Practice Field Reservations: City league Adult and Youth teams may reserve practice fields. To reserve a practice field, call 913-651-2203. A confirmation of the reservation will be E-mailed to the Head Coach.

Tournaments: Fields may be reserved for tournaments. The fee will be $125 per field per day with lights included. A contract MUST be signed for tournament field reservations and the fee MUST be paid at the time the reservation is made. Must apply and pay in advance at the Parks and Recreation Office.

Three regional parks and recreation agencies are working together to create fitness opportunities for the entire Kansas-side of the greater KC Metropolitan area. Called the “Kansas Duathlon Series,” the partnership will include several challenging races throughout the summer of 2014.

The Leavenworth Parks and Recreation Department is working alongside the Gardner Parks and Recreation Department and the Johnson County Park and Recreation District for this purpose.

In Leavenworth, the Dog Daze Duathlon that takes place each August will become part of the Kansas Duathlon Series.

Athletes will have the chance to compete in all three races, getting points for each race. Participants with a faster finish time will get more points. Registration is separate for each event.

Prize packages will be awarded to winners. The winners will be selected based on point acquisition relating to a participant’s placement at each event.

Points and prizes are only for duathlon participants, however, 5K walks, 5K runs and 10K runs are available at each event for those who do not wish to participate in the duathlons.
