Riverfront Community Center The Riverfront Community Center, 123 S. Esplanade St., is a beautifully restored 1880s train depot with rooms available for weddings, meetings and special events. A $100 to $300 refundable damage/security deposit is required to confirm reservations.

Hourly room rental rates include set-up and take-down of furniture and trash removal. Decorating time is charged at $10 per hour. Table sizes are small round (36 inches) large rounds (60 inches) and rectangular (3 X 6-foot). Other sizes are available. Rental items: Projector system $25, portable screen $10, patio furniture $25, bar or fireplace $25, table skirts $15. Table decorations are also available.

CATERING: Catering options include in-house caterer, Terry Booker, at 913-680-1300 or theabcafe@gmail.com, or hiring an outside caterer (requires a 20 percent surcharge.) Individuals may also rent the kitchens (rates below).

harvey girl luncheons Step back into the late 1800s when Fred Harvey tamed the west with his train depot restaurants and the Harvey Girls. Reservation includes a lunch served at the Riverfront Community Center by the Harvey Girls, followed by a brief history. Reservations must be two weeks in advance with a minimum of 20 people. Leavenworth City Parks adopting a Leavenworth city park or other landscaped public area? Participants can choose from a variety of tasks, to include establishing a presence in the parks and reporting vandalism and maintenance problems, picking up litter, painting, weeding, or gardening. Donations also may be made for park improvements. City staff will provide guidance and some materials for projects. Contact Julie Anderson, Parks and Recreation Director, at (913) 651-2203, or janderson@firstcity. org. Choose a park and decide which activities you will be able to do and how often. Once this is established, a sign will be erected in the park with your group’s name and logo.

Picnic Shelters

Rent a shelter for the day at Leavenworth City parks. Picnic tables seat 6-8 people. Extra tables are $5 each. Ray Miller Park shelter has no access to restroom facilities.

Alcoholic Beverage Permit

By City ordinance, alcoholic beverages are prohibited in City parks, except as authorized by Parks and Recreation to Leavenworth area residents with a park reservation permit. There is a $10 alcoholic beverage or beer permit fee.

Game Kits

Rent a kit at the Parks and Recreation Office for $5 (and a $20 refundable deposit) for up to 3 days. Includes a volleyball and net, one baseball, two softballs, two bats, three gloves, a football, and a soccer ball.

Shelters

Leavenworth Landing Park

This scenic park on the Missouri River is available to rent for special occasions. Permit fees are $15 per hour ($20 for non-City residents) with a $100 refundable damage deposit.

Fees are due when a permit is requested.

Choose either the Paddlewheel Plaza or the Railroad Roundhouse. The Bridge Tender’s Building rents for $20, with a $20 refundable key deposit. The park, which is adjacent to the Riverfront Community Center and historic downtown Leavenworth, also connects to the Three-Mile Creek Trail at Leavenworth Landing Park walkway.

Commemorate a special person or event with a living legacy.

For a $200 fee, a tree will be planted and a plaque erected at the planting site. Request forms are available at the Parks and Recreation Office. For an additional $200, you may request a 5” x 5” aluminum plaque. For a larger plaque size or dedication bench, please call the Parks and Recreation Department at 913-651-2203.

Riverfront Park Campground

This campground park beside the Missouri River offers basic and electric camping pads, tent camping, a bath house with four private units, a boat ramp, picnic shelter, and dump station. For reservations, call the Park Manager at (913) 290-0034.

$40 Pool Parties Come celebrate your birthday or special event at the indoor pool. During our Open Swim Time, you may reserve the balcony overlooking the pool and have your cake and presents right there. Admission cost is $1 per child, $1.50 per adult, balcony reservation $10 per hour. After-hour private parties are also available. Fees: $50/hour for City residents or $55/hour for non-residents.

Lap Swim Rules No one under 14 admitted into the pool during lap swim, unless authorized by the Recreation Program Supervisor. All lap swimmers must be able to swim one length of the pool unassisted, using front crawl. Circle swim is required when there are more than two swimmers per lane. Please choose a lane with swimmers equal to your ability. (Always stay to the right). No more than five swimmers per lane. Exceptions to these rules must be approved by Recreation Program Supervisor.

Flotation Devices In order to keep all patrons safe while enjoying the pool, only noodle floats may be used. No other toys or floats allowed except for class times. An approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD) may be used by an individual with special physical or mental need.

Doggie Dash-N-Splash is Sept. 14 at Wollman Park Join the Friends of the Waggin’ Tails Dog Park and Leavenworth Parks and Recreation 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 14 at Wollman Park, 13th and Shawnee streets, for festivities, music, snacks, raffles, cutest doggie bathing suit contest, bounce house fun and vendors. After a short hike around the park, your dog may enjoy a refreshing swim in the pool. The hike starts at 1:30 p.m.

High Noon Rudolph’s Red-Nose Run

December 6. This “tuff” 7.2-mile race begins and ends at the High Noon Saloon in historic downtown Leavenworth. The course takes a route through the beautiful campus of the Dwight D. WALK KANSAS - Celebrate Healthy Living

In Kansas, only 48% of the population reaches the minimum goal for physical activity, placing them at risk for chronic disease because of physical activity & nutrition choices. 37% of Kansans are overweight and 27% are obese. 42nd Annual Labor Day Tennis Tournament

The 42nd Annual Leavenworth Parks and Recreation Labor Day Tennis Tournament will be held Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, August 30, 31, September 1. Open to all. Dinner included on Saturday (extra meals $5).

Dog trainer, Kim Downing, will teach you and your fourlegged friend the basic commands. Geared for dogs ages 4 months or older. Must be current on vaccinations. This is a seven-week program. Level I: This is the foundation level class and includes many behaviors like beginning walking on leash, sit, down, come, focused attention, place, and stay.

Level II: (Prerequisite: Successful completion of Level I class.) This a continuation of Level I with the skills getting more refined and difficult. Additional skills like directional come, leave it, wait, back, and stand will be added along with work on mannered greetings. Includes AKC Canine Good Citizen test. Doggie Dash-N-Splash 1–4 p.m. Sept. 14 at Wollman Park, 13th and Shawnee streets.

Festivities will include music, snacks, raffles, cutest doggie bathing suit contest, bounce house, vendors, hike, and doggie swimming.

Hike Time: 1:30 p.m., Swim Times: 1:30–2:30 p.m. and 2:45 –3:45 p.m. 75 dogs maximum per swim session. Fees: $10 per dog for the hike OR one swim session, or $15 per dog for both the hike and one swim session, which also includes a doggie bandana. Haunted Havens Hayride Leavenworth Parks & Recreation partners with the River City Community Players at Havens Park, 22nd and Ottawa streets, for a haunting

hayride and Trunk-or-Treat. Event is 7-10 p.m.

Haymarket Square on Friday, Nov. 21. Food and gift vendors will be available at 4 p.m.

The Leavenworth Main Street Holiday Lighted Parade will begin at approximately 5:30 p.m., and the Tree Lighting will be held immediately following the parade. Entertainment will be provided.

NOVEMBER Holiday Bazaar & Flea Market Nov. 1- Exhibitor Set-up: 6-8 a.m.; Sale: 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Riverfront Community Center. Get an early start on Christmas shopping or find that certain “something” at our annual Holiday Bazaar and Flea Market. Free admission for shoppers.

First Grader Santa Claus Drawing Contest - Leavenworth/Lansing area first-graders are invited to participate. All drawings should be free-hand and submitted by their teacher. They will be judged & displayed at the Riverfront Community Center. The winner will receive a prize and will help throw the light switch at the Mayor’s Holiday Lighting Ceremony. All drawings must be submitted to the Riverfront Community Center Manager by November 12 at 5 p.m.
