It has been an amazing month for all of the Spitfire teams and for the whole club as part of the wider local community. This is because we have all had to pull together to organise two fundraising football tournaments for a total of over four hundred children. Parents, grandparents, aunties, siblings and friends of the children packed sweets, cooked burgers, refereed matches, designed programmes and erected gazebos to make both days so lovely for the children. Added to this, the Eternit Sports and Social Club kept the adults and children going by serving some lovely cold drinks from the bar; it is such an amazing venue! Additionally, our sponsors at Barker Brothers Butchers, Shelford really supported the event and we would like to say a huge thank you to Kate Barker and her family because we could never have raised such a great amount of money without their very kind donations of the most amazing burgers and sausages (which we fully sold out of). The Shepreth under 9s tournament was the first to take place and what a day it was. After five 6 v 6 qualifying matches, eight teams out of 24 went into the quarter finals. Unfortunately two of the three Shepreth teams knocked each other out in the group stages but both teams were very proud of their performances throughout the day and lots of ice creams were eaten before during and after matches :). One Shepreth team, 19 Squadron, made it all of the way to the final though and beat a very good Bury Town team 1 – 0 to win the tournament, which resulted in so much celebration - including ice cream being eaten out of their winners trophies.

The under 11s Spitfires tournament was also fantastic, with 200 boys and girls having a great day playing football, again at the Eternit. Both Shepreth teams qualified into the quarter finals. All of the local teams did well and Shepreth 66 Sqn lost to Foxton in the quarter final. This meant that as Shepreth’s other team (19 Sqn) had won their quarter final Shepreth played Foxton in the semi-finals. There was lots of cheering and great football played by both teams and in the end Shepreth 19 Sqn won. After this, Shepreth played Hoddesdon FC in the final. Shepreth lost 2 – 0 but were, after their initial disappointment, thrilled with their runners up trophies. The two days were fantastic for the children and it was great to see all of the support given to the Shepreth Spitfires by an army of local volunteers. The children are now looking forward to starting their league football in September after a well earned summer break. If anyone would like to join the Shepreth Spitfires please use our web page www.sheprethspitfires.co.uk or call Lucy on 07510 175370. We currently have teams from under 7s to under 13s.
