Christopher Gravatt (1931-2020)

Christopher Gravatt of 2 North End, Meldreth, died peacefully on 31st July 2020 at the age of 88, after a long struggle with dementia.

He was born in London in 1931, grew up in the suburbs during the war, completed national service in Yorkshire, read history at Oxford University, married Valerie Gray (of Grays of Cambridge) in 1960 and moved to Bassingbourn six years later. After Valerie's untimely death in 1993, he moved to Meldreth in 1998, pleased to have found a home that was walking distance from a station, shop and pub.

Christopher was a Parish Councillor in Bassingbourn in the 1970s and an independent-minded Conservative District Councillor for Bassingbourn ward between 2000 and 2004. His sales and marketing jobs for Monsanto, ICI and Doulton took him all over Africa, the Middle East and continental Europe between the 1950s and 1970s but jobs closer to home for Biggs Wall and Marie Curie gave him time in the 1980s to take up marathon running. He completed numerous London marathons, including the second one in 1982, as well as competing in marathons in New York, Moscow, Snowdonia and Eastbourne. Christopher recorded his best time of under 3 hours 10 minutes when in his early sixties before finally hanging up his shoes in 2006 at the age of 75 - a genuine Royston Runner super vet. He spent the last four years of his life in the care of Sunrise in Elstree, Hertfordshire and he leaves behind four children, Simon, Helen,

Julian and Giles, and seven grandchildren, Jay, Natasha, Zach, Ada, Jemima, Florence and Leo. Christopher often enjoyed a social beer with family and friends in The British Queen in Meldreth; so for those of you who remember him, please do raise a glass in his memory.
