Editorial Welcome to the September issue of Meldreth Matters.

In July, Lesley Farbridge and I attended the 20th annual Cambridge Building Society Magazine Awards at the Arthur Rank Hospice in Cambridge. As always, we welcomed the opportunity to look at different magazines and to chat to other editors. More than thirty publications were entered into the competition this year with a combined circulation of over one hundred thousand copies. The magazines were judged on editorial excellence, relevance of community content, use of imagery and overall presentation.

MM did not win any prizes this year. Whilst we would, of course, have been delighted to win an award, our primary aim is to produce an informative and interesting magazine every month. Programmes can be obtained at any of the open gardens for £4 per adult, children £1 and children under 7 free. Teas and cakes and a plant stall will be available at 33 Chiswick End. All proceeds will go to the Friends of Holy Trinity Church Fabric Fund to maintain the structure of the 1000 year old Church.

Sunday 22nd September - 15th Churchyard Car Show This year marks the 60th anniversary of the introduction of the Mini and it is hoped that a selection of models and years of manufacture can be assembled. It is also the 60th anniversary of the MkII Jaguar. As usual a selection of cars from the 1920s to the 1980s is planned including some sporting examples and this Alvis 1925 TE model with a replica ducks-back body. In addition there will be motorbikes from the same era and an enlarged selection of pedal cycles. Teas will be served in the Meeting Room, with virtual bell ringing to try in the church. Music will be provided by the Memphis Jazz Band.

Cycling to Cambridge Cycling to Cambridge: I want to try it out, but I’m not sure of the best route …

A few people have told us that they would like to cycle to work, education or just for fun to Cambridge, but are not sure of the best route. Unfortunately, good maps of the evolving cycle network in our area don’t yet exist and Google Maps doesn’t display the best route.

The A10 Corridor Cycling Campaign is working to produce a map, which will be posted on our website as soon as it’s available.

Meanwhile, if you’d like to do a dry run and would appreciate a guided tour, please get in touch and we can pair you up with someone to show you the best route. The key points to become acquainted with include the diversion away from the M11 roundabout through Trumpington Meadows Country Park (which takes only about a minute longer); the Guided Busway cycleway from Trumpington Park and Ride to Cambridge Station (a stretch taking about ten minutes to ride, passing

by Addenbrooke’s and Long Road Sixth Form College), and then the quiet back street route from Cambridge Station to central Cambridge, avoiding Station Road and Hills Road.

Other things to consider include carrying waterproofs. Cycling on a rainy day tends to beat the traffic every time!

You can also check if your employer is signed up to ‘Travel for Cambridgeshire’. If so, you are probably entitled to a 10% discount on a new bicycle, accessories (like rain gear) and cycle training. Just google the scheme to learn more. It also works for many rail season ticket discounts and is generally designed to encourage sustainable travel.

Notes From a Small Garden I have just found a really useful guide in the RHS August journal to sowing autumn and spring vegetables and have put it at the top of my notes, for those who for one reason or another don’t read down to the end of this copy. I’ve edited it slightly!  For spinach, chard, land cress and winter lettuce and oriental leaf crops, sow in September  For garlic and onions, sow in October  For broad beans, salad onions and shallots, sow in November.

Some readers may be interested to know that my “controlled” trial of whether to cut the tops off runner beans when they reach the tops of the poles, or to leave the growing tips to whip around in this August gale as they are doing the day I write this, show that cutting the tops off does seem to make the plants bush out more and I hope to get more runner beans later. I vastly prefer French runner beans which we grow over arches. This helps one to find the beans as they tumble down nicely. This has worked with the Borlotti beans which have done better than the French or French crosses which are now available.

I particularly like the packets with the long thin runners coloured green, yellow and purple but so far they haven’t done as well this summer.

Do you ever feel envious of friends who say they are bottling their tomatoes, they have so many? My tomatoes haven’t done well this summer. However, one basket of yellow cherry tomatoes which for some reason I never got round to planting outside, are producing a good handful most days. Crimson Crush, much trumpeted by friends in North End, has only given us a few fruits despite planting it outside and watering and feeding regularly. It must be the soil!

Jobs for September  Divide your herbaceous perennials  Net ponds before leaf fall starts  Once the tomatoes have finished, clean out frames, polytunnels and greenhouses before autumn planting and overwintering geraniums, etc  Keep clearing plants that have gone over. They often reward you by flowering again. This is particularly true of roses, and even my pink cistus is merrily producing new blooms.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor I'm writing in response to Roger Wallbridge's letter on Heidi Allen (MM August 2019). I pass no comment on the contents, but I write as I feel Meldreth Matters is not the place for significant political discourse. The local MP is entitled to "press release" as indeed the local councillors do. However, society is too full of further political comment, counter comment and all out division and it would be nice if Meldreth Matters letters pages just stayed out of the heavy political debate no matter how tempting it may be.

Dear Editor Roger Wallbridge’s letter in the August issue of Meldreth Matters should also not be allowed to pass without comment. Heidi was elected as a Conservative MP but this does not mean that she has slavishly to follow the party line on all matters. In Parliament an MP must have regard not only to local matters but to the national interest and they must have the strength of mind to be guided by their own moral compass.

There has never been any doubt about Heidi’s opposition to Brexit and, along with many other Conservative colleagues, she made her position perfectly clear. It should also be said that Teresa May’s withdrawal agreement suffered one of the biggest defeats in Parliamentary history, being opposed by members of all parties and even by our current Prime Minister - a confirmed Brexiteer if ever there was one! Heidi could also be said to be acting on a ‘mandate’ from South Cambs electors, who voted 62% to 38% in favour of ‘Remain’!

I also am not in favour of another referendum but I respect Heidi’s point of view and her right to campaign for what she believes to be in the national interest. Despite Mr Wallbridge’s assertion, we do have an elected representative in Parliament and we are fortunate to have an independent-minded MP who works hard to keep in touch with her constituents and operates across the political spectrum.

Dear Editor I was very disappointed to read the letter from Roger Wallbridge in the August edition of Meldreth Matters. During various dealings with Ms Allen I have always found her to be honest, open and clear about where she stands. She was re-elected in the 2017 general election to represent her constituency, having clearly shown that she was pro-remain. This reflects the view of the majority of the constituency, as demonstrated in the referendum.

I have never voted for the Tory party but I consider Heidi Allen to be a good MP and feel that her resigning from the Tory party was a matter of conscience.

Hopefully we will soon have another general election when it will be clear how we all stand on our MP and in our relationship with the EU. Meldreth Primary School www.meldreth.cambs.sch.uk Last term, the school launched a class set of Google Chromebooks.

These devices enable children to work directly together on shared documents, to continue working on tasks at home, to engage in online discussions with their teacher or with one another as they work, and to receive direct feedback or correction while work is in progress. My own schooldays and teaching career have spanned the entire breadth of the computing revolution of the past forty years, which from fairly slow and clunky beginnings in the 1980s has – and continues to - develop with ever increasing pace!

As a teenager in the 1970s, at the old High School for Boys in Cambridge, I remember ‘enjoying’ tuition in the finer points of slide rule use in our maths lessons – at that time, the most advanced device available for calculation. Suddenly, in the third form the first electronic calculators appeared and our lives were transformed. In fact I’m pretty sure that my year group was the first that was allowed to use calculators in the old O-Level examinations. The High School always boasted ‘a computer room’ back in those days although only a very small elite were ever allowed to see it, let alone touch it. It used to spew out quite a lot of incomprehensible hole-punched ticker tape which we held onto jealously as if it were some kind of special currency from which we might benefit in the future.

Fast forward to 1986, when I spent a year as a volunteer working in a large primary school in Cambridge which proudly boasted two Sinclair ZX Spectrum machines. These certainly enjoyed plenty of use on a daily basis! The two programs which I remember most clearly were Dread Dragon Droom and Granny’s Garden – both problem solving games with crude yet engaging graphics which made an unspeakable screeching racket as they loaded over a five or six minute period from (as I remember) a cassette tape.

By the time I had graduated with a Postgrad Certificate of Education in 1987, I had moved to the East End of London, where greater school incomes enabled greater numbers of (arguably better) computers – BBC Micros and Acorn Electrons. Large floppy discs meant that programs could be loaded more quickly and the range and scope of machines in classrooms quickly started to develop. Floppy discs stopped being floppy; they shrank in size and loaded more quietly and speedily and an 13

ever burgeoning range of applications became available. To be honest, there was so much appearing, so quickly, that teachers could only realistically manage the very small range of what they had time to explore themselves. I recall no training of any kind during these early days, but computers became a familiar feature of classroom life for good.

The next really significant development I remember was shortly after I arrived at Meldreth Primary School in 1997.

Tesco had been supporting schools for some years with its ‘Computers for Schools’ scheme, and was the agent that introduced the world wide web to the school, in 1999. I remember a large, florid, enthusiastic rep from Tesco coming into the Year 6 class and getting us all to create a human web of holding hands to try and demonstrate how information could be sped around the globe as quickly as the squeeze of a fist. It was a wellintentioned idea! Once the internet had arrived in school, there was no looking back, as children could access a far wider range of games, information and live experiences at the click of a key. I remember that the very first time I accessed a live internet broadcast with the class, we were studying Brazil and I opened the page on a live and somewhat inappropriate stream of the Rio Carnival with barely clad, high-kicking carnival dancers parading across the screen before us! Another enthralling moment in our early days of internet use was when we tuned into a live webcam trained upon a mother lioness and her newly born cubs streamed from the Kruger Safari Park in South Africa. It was memorable and mesmerising!

When our first interactive whiteboards were introduced in a staff meeting about a decade ago, I remember colleagues being too wary to have a go, for fear of breaking the devices, yet overall, teachers have been ever eager to embrace the new technology in school. Children are routinely taught programming, and eSafety lessons are of very high importance in our curriculum. Alongside our computers and interactive screens, there is a range of programmable and computerised devices that support learning across the curriculum and we have enjoyed the benefits of a ‘Code Club’ expert in school, in the shape of one of our parents, Matt Lees; a computing professional who has enthusiastically developed children’s skills with Raspberry Pis, BBC Microbits and Scratch programming over recent years.

I sense that with the advent of Google Chromebooks, there is a move towards a centralisation of the way in which we use computers in school. However, experience over the past 40 years and more has 14

taught me to anticipate nothing, but to embrace the opportunities that technology offers. As yet, the teacher in the classroom has not been replaced by artificial intelligence, but if things continue to race ahead as they have done, who knows what the class teacher of 2060 will look like?

School Matters The school community bade a fond farewell to two long standing members of staff in July, both Meldreth residents and with associations with the school for over twenty years. Lesley Pemberton’s three children all attended the school, where she has been a teacher for fourteen years – one of a rare kind who has taught children of every age throughout the 4-11 age span. For many years, she has been the Art leader in school and she will be long-remembered for the wonderful stage backdrops she has painted for many of our school productions. Whilst retiring from classroom teaching, Lesley will continue to develop her career as an Art Therapist pursuing her passion in new and enterprising directions.

Heather Williams too, has worked with children throughout the school over the past two decades. As a Teaching Assistant she has guided countless children in their learning and provided exceptional individual support for children with additional needs. She has ever been present to offer additional help with special events and has provided singular ‘comfort-support’ in the staffroom through her wonderful baking. We wish both Lesley and Heather every happiness and success in their ‘next chapters’.

Meanwhile, in the end of term assembly the school thanked Mrs Pedge for ten years’ service in school and both Mrs Samways and Mr Jones for 21 years each.

Station Flower Tubs: Thank You A report from one of our station tub watering volunteers: ‘A flowery platform really does cheer people on their way: when I was last watering the tubs, someone waiting for a train said how much he liked the tubs and what a difference they made, and he appreciated the work that went into maintaining them.’ Thanks again to everyone who has helped to keep the tubs going over the summer.

We’ll be replanting the tubs for the winter at some point around October half-term. Look out for dates or get in touch any time if you’d like to help out.

Melbourn Village College is 60!

Melbourn Village College is 60 years old in September. If you’re a local, it’s very likely that you have had some connection with the College over the years. Perhaps you were a pupil or worked there in some capacity, or maybe you attended evening classes for recreation or work. Whatever your connection, MVC is holding a reunion on Friday 27th September from 2.00-4.00pm, to mark our Diamond Anniversary and we’d like you to join us.

In particular, it would be nice to meet the ‘pioneer pupils’, who attended from the opening day in September 1959. Come and find yourself on a two-metre enlargement of the first all-school photograph!

Foxton Scarecrow Festival: Saturday 12th October St Laurence’s Church, Foxton will be holding its very successful Scarecrow Festival once again this year on Saturday 12th October from 12 noon to 5.00pm, so please come along and join us for some scarecrow fun!

Favourite Jaunts from Meldreth: Wrest Park, Silsoe Following last month’s article on the Munnings Art Museum, here is some information on one of my favourite destinations: Wrest Park, located in the village of Silsoe, Bedfordshire. The current mansion was built in the 1830s and is set in a restored garden landscape originally laid out in the 17th century. For over 600 years the estate was the home of the Earls de Grey. In 1758 the famous landscape architect Capability Brown was employed to remodel the park. During the First World War the mansion was used as a military hospital. However, in September 1916 a serious fire required the troops to be evacuated and the hospital ceased to function. Subsequently various uses were made of the mansion until, in 1948, it became the home of the National Institute of Agricultural Engineering which in turn became the Silsoe Research Institute. When the Institute closed in2006 the property was taken over by English Heritage which began a 20 year project to restore the grounds to their pre-1917 state.

Today Wrest Park is a very attractive visitor venue. In addition to the mansion, the extensive grounds include woodland, lakes and lawns. A large children’s play facility is adjacent to a comfortable dining area where a range of meals and snacks can be purchased. Both can be accessed before payment is required to enter the park and mansion.

Journey time from Meldreth is about 45 minutes via Baldock and the A507 to Stotfold, Henlow and Shefford. When the A507 reaches the A6 Silsoe can be found about 1 mile to the South. The postcode for your satnav is MK45 4HR. The basic entry charge is £12.70 with concession, child and family rates. There is no charge for members of English Heritage. The staff at Wrest Park go to extraordinary lengths to accommodate disabled visitors. It is possible to pre-order a complimentary mobility scooter to be brought to a disabled bay in the car park. This can be used to access an enclosed ‘buggy’ which makes tours of the park. As the buggy is staffed by volunteers it is advisable to check that it will be operating on the day of your visit.

Meldreth WI In July, we had a very enjoyable dinner at The Green Man in Shepreth.

For our last meeting, though, we were back to our usual meeting place of Meldreth Village Hall.

We discussed forthcoming outings. These include a candlelit tour of Holkham Hall when we will see it lit up ready for Christmas. We will be stopping for a fish and chips special at Cromer and after the tour will have a glass of Prosecco and some mince pies. We also hope to have a visit to the National Army Museum for a tour of the Tutankhamun exhibition. Our talks and outings always cover a wide selection of events and also present an opportunity to meet other WI members from across the county.

Our August speaker was Dr Ed Turner, university lecturer and curator of insects at the Museum of Zoology in Cambridge. He talked to us about the range of insects that can be found in our gardens, which in turn feed the birds, and also the different sorts of flowers we can plant to help with pollination. It has been proven that if patients recovering in hospital can see greenery their recovery is quicker than seeing just buildings. Dr Turner finished his talk by saying “Don’t keep your garden too tidy; it is surprising what grows where you can’t see.”

His talk is somewhat connected to our next month’s speaker, Angela Deavall who will tell us about ‘Chemical Free Living’. She specialises in the growing of herbs, so if you have herbs growing in your garden bring some to show us. We will be meeting in Meldreth Village Hall at 7.30pm on Thursday 12th September.

Melbourn & Meldreth Women’s Group In July Joan Munden talked to us about the role of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and in particular about Lilian Rolfe who was a relation serving in the SOE. SOE’s role was to cause disruption to the Germans and support the resistance efforts and their allies. Each group operated by itself and consisted of three people; a leader, an assistant and a wireless operator. Lilian was known as Claudie and used the code name of Nadine as a wireless operator. She transmitted messages using code printed on silk as it did not rustle and could be burnt without leaving ash. Her survival expectation as a wireless operator was six weeks. She was caught, imprisoned and eventually sent to Ravensbruck where she worked as forced labour building roads along with two other operatives, Violette Szabo and Denise Bloch.

Lilian, Violette and Denise were executed on 5th February 1945 and the camp was liberated just two months later.

Vera Atkins was the SOE Intelligence Officer responsible for Lilian and many others. She ensured that relatives received cards or letters pre written by the operatives who were abroad so as to maintain secrecy as to their whereabouts and actions. She would have seen Lilian off from RAF Tempsford, near Sandy. Lysander aircraft were used to fly to France as they could fly under the radar and they would also pick up agents for debriefing and airman who had been shot down. Vera Atkins lost fourteen of her women operatives through execution or ill treatment and she ensured that they were all recorded as killed in action. Two George Crosses were awarded, along with three MBEs, and there are memorials to the women in this country and abroad.

Tempsford’s memorial is inscribed “by the full moon we flew”.

District and County Councillors’ Reports August was a quiet month for the District and County Councils, but here are a few general items with local implications.

Anticipating NHS Service Reductions In addition to its own responsibility for commissioning Public Health preventative services (smoking cessation, drug and alcohol services, falls prevention for elderly people, sexual health screening, health checks, etc) the County Council has a statutory duty to scrutinise the consultation process that accompanies any significant NHS service change. At the moment, much attention is being paid to new Cambridgeshire NHS savings targets and ‘difficult decisions’. This round is particularly tough.

How does it work and what’s the problem? Local NHS services are commissioned by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). Interestingly, this CCG geography includes GP surgeries in Royston. The overall population area includes 950,000 people and is one of the largest CCGs in the country. But our CCG is the third lowest nationally in terms of funding. Unique pressures include a rapidly growing population that is not calculated into its funding formula – so no money for growth, on top of other well -known NHS pressures.

You may have heard about discontinuation of IVF services in Cambridgeshire, which Government has condemned – but hasn’t corrected the funding formula anomaly for. In September, the CCG will be attending the County’s Health Committee to tell us more about the range of services that may either lose funding or be decommissioned.

It’s likely that funding for voluntary services will take a big hit.

Out of the spotlight, staff recruitment and retention continues to be a key area of risk. So while funding for a new regional Children’s Hospital on the Addenbrooke’s site has been announced by the Department for Health, this doesn’t address workforce shortages at community level - like health visitors for baby weighing clinics or children’s mental health support workers.

Over the summer, Susan visited the Phoenix Centre for young people with complex eating disorders – part of the Cambs and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust at Fulbourn. This is a regional centre with just twelve in-patient beds for 13-18 year olds. Among the challenges for 33

better supporting young people suffering from eating disorder is a paucity of resource to further develop home-based support in the community. That means having sufficient staff in the pipeline, as well as funding. The CCG’s current round of cuts means that the kind of support needed to make a difference to the service is unlikely to be found this year.

Parking and Pavement Parking You won’t be surprised to know that we get lots of complaints about parking on pavements. Who’s responsible and what can be done?

As of June, only 22 parking enforcement notices have been issued in South Cambridgeshire this year.

South Cambs has been under pressure from the Police and Crime Commissioner to agree what’s called a Civil Parking Enforcement scheme for the district, but legislation makes this impossible and responsibility for parking enforcement remains with the Police. This is because Council Tax cannot be used to fund such a scheme; rather, funds can only come from money earned from parking - car parks, fines, residents’ parking schemes. However, there are no car parks and no residents’ parking schemes in South Cambs, so there’s no appropriate revenue stream for a civil parking scheme.

There has been some discussion at government level about legislating but as things stand, it is at the discretion of the Police whether they issue a penalty notice or not. The advice is that they will do so if the gap is not large enough for a wheelchair to pass through. The Police have reiterated that if regular offenders are reported to them three times, they will take action. This can of course be put to the test.

Green to the Core - New Initiatives at SCDC Electric powered bin lorries? You may have seen reports in the local media of the Waste Service (SCDC and City) investigating switching to electric powered bin lorries. The current fleet meets the highest environmental standards for diesel engines but the trucks only manage 4-6 miles to the gallon and the fleet of 50 bin lorries and eighteen street sweeping vehicles costs around £46,000 every four weeks to fuel. The cost of their replacement by electric powered vehicles is high and the two councils are exploring how this might be best achieved.

SCDC has pledged to generate 25% of its income from investments by the end of this administration. Green energy, be it battery storage, solar, EV charging points or others are all possible future investment opportunities for the Council.

What is the service?

We offer twice weekly visits and daily phone calls to support elderly or mobility impaired residents in their own homes by building a friendship and helping prevent social isolation. We can carry out errands such as local shopping, collecting prescriptions, paying bills or going to the Post Office so people can remain supported and independent at home. We can also help couples or those living with their family. We are also trained to support people living with dementia.

Who provides the services?

Mobile wardens, who have all been carefully selected for their caring nature and are DBS checked.

What will it cost?

We do make a small charge for the services, which is from as little as £7.50 per week.

Neighbourhood Watch Drivers Targeted with Fake Fines Action Fraud received 33 reports between January and July 2019 of victims being targeted by individuals purporting to be police officers and traffic wardens. A number of these victims were elderly and vulnerable.

The victims were approached while in their car or in a car park and told by the fraudster that they had parked illegally or broken a speed limit and that a photograph had been taken of their car for evidence.

Victims were advised that they would face a substantial penalty fine unless they paid a smaller upfront fee. If the victim opted for paying the smaller penalty, they were directed to a parking payment machine and asked to enter their card and PIN number. These payment machines had been tampered with by the fraudster so that the victim's card was retained and the fraudster looked over the victim’s shoulder to get their PIN number. Once the victim's card had been retained, they were told by the fraudster to seek help from the company who operates the payment machine or their bank.

This was a highly planned fraud that took advantage of the pressure victims feel to pay fines, especially by those who are elderly and vulnerable. You can avoid being caught by a similar scam by following these guidelines:  If you are suspicious about the authenticity of a fine, do not pay it until you have verified it with your local council.  Always shield your PIN from view when using any sort of payment or cash machine, and never share your PIN with anyone.  If your bank card is retained by a payment or cash machine, contact your bank immediately to inform them.

Melbourn Timebank https://tol2.timebanking.org/melbourn/ The Timebank is growing steadily. We now have members from Melbourn, Meldreth, Shepreth and Foxton. Thank you to everyone who visited the Timebank stall at the Community Showcase event at The Hub in July. The tombola and ‘guess the number of sweets in the jar’ were a huge success and drew adults and children alike. We had several enquiries about joining the Timebank and raised £155.75 for future Timebank ventures - thank you for your support! What is the Timebank?

If you have missed previous articles about the Timebank, here is a quick summary.

Timebanking is a way for local people to come together and help each other by exchanging knowledge, help and skills. Everyone has something to offer a Timebank from making a cake, picking up a prescription, walking their dog, doing some gardening, visiting someone for a cup of tea, welcoming new residents to the village, whatever you do will make a difference to the person that needs your help.

You get an hour’s time credit which you can use to get something back.

That may be help with your mobile/tablet, learning how to hem a skirt, someone picking up a loaf of bread, or gaining some new skills.

Everyone’s time is equal, so one hour of my time is equal to one hour of your time, irrespective of whatever we choose to exchange.

However, it’s not just about giving and receiving. Timebanking is also about bringing people together to build a stronger, safer and happier community. The exchanges can go on and on, as do the new friendships, connections and networks that are made. Members feel less isolated and more supported in their own community.

News From Heidi Allen, MP www.heidiallen.co.uk In my last newsletter, I discussed the Parliamentary debate that I secured to highlight the funding issue facing Cambridgeshire’s NHS services. We continue to be the third lowest funded county per head in England and I have been working closely with our Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to evidence this. As a result, and on the back of assurances made during the Parliamentary debate, I secured a meeting with the Minister, Stephen Hammond at which the Accountable Officer of our CCG, Jan Thomas presented our findings.

The Minister was receptive to our points and explained that the funding formula which determines allocations could not respond quickly enough to our rapidly growing population. Mr Hammond committed to work with the CCG and NHS England to look again at ways to correct the historical underfunding and ensure future growth projections better reflect actual growth, thus reducing the mismatch with per patient funding allocations. I will continue to follow up with the Department of Health and the CCG to ensure that the new administration honour this commitment. In spite of the funding shortfall, our local NHS services continue to provide outstanding care and clinical expertise to those in need.

I was delighted to nominate the Arthur Rank Hospice for the NHS Parliamentary Care and Compassion Award and they proved to be worthy winners of the East of England category. The team at the Hospice go above and beyond to deliver high quality care with compassion and expertise.

Just before the schools broke up for the summer holidays I made several visits to local Primary and Pre-Schools and saw the excellent work that they are all doing in spite of educational cost pressures. I wrote to the Prime Minister in early July, arguing that a cash injection for schools was needed now. Forty other MPs supported my letter. The Secretary of State responded, highlighting that he had set out a very strong case 44

for Education as we approach the Treasury Spending Review at the end of the year. I will be making contact with the new Secretary of State when Parliament returns to hold him to this commitment.

In the meantime, I would like to thank Homerton Nursery, Great Abington Pre-School and Elsworth Pre-School for demonstrating how valuable quality early years care can be for every child. These schools place care and learning at the heart of their provision giving children happy, exciting and playful days full of discovery.

The learning journey continues at primary schools and the same themes of learning, discovery and happiness were very much in evidence at Meldreth and Girton Glebe Primary Schools when I visited. These thriving village schools want the very best for their pupils and are an extremely valuable part of our local communities. I wish the very best of luck to the Year 6 pupils who I met on my visits as they prepare to move up to secondary school. I will continue to fight for education funding that recognises that excellence in education needs resourcing and I am determined to deliver this message to the new Prime Minister and Secretary of State in the new school year.

Of course, summer holidays and warmer weather means that it’s fete season here in South Cambridgeshire and I was delighted to open the Bar Hill Fete, one of the largest in the constituency in early July.

This was promptly followed by a stint in the food tent at the Shelford Feast Go West Evening (pictured right). Many hands really did make light work and the food on offer was outstanding. Phil and I really enjoyed meeting new and old faces at both of these events.

Charity News Walk for Parkinsons Join us for our Walk for Parkinson's around the beautiful Wandlebury Country Park at 11.00am on Saturday 28th September.

Walk 1.5 or 4.5 miles in this beautiful country park set on top of the Magog Hills, just south of Cambridgeshire and raise funds to fund vital support services and research. All funds help Parkinson's UK improve life for those living with the condition as well as bringing us closer to a cure.

With views stretching as far as Ely, both routes within this tranquil country park pass mature woodland and wild flower meadows. What better way to spend a Saturday than by walking with others at this feel-good event to make a difference?

A new report from Healthwatch into people’s views on improving local NHS services shows that good communication is really important to people. People want health professionals to acknowledge their own knowledge and experience about their condition and to listen.

Eight hundred people across the region gave their views to Healthwatch. Most want face-to-face meetings and they also want emails and letters about their health in simple, plain English with no complicated medical jargon.
