Welcome to the September issue of Meldreth Matters. The magazine has a slightly different look this month as we highlight the planning application that has been submitted for the Marley Eternit site. If approved, the application could see a 19% increase in the number of houses in the village. This month’s cover, by Richard Burns, shows the proposed development in relation to the village as a whole. The pullout insert in the centre pages includes a detailed plan of the site plus further information from the Parish Council’s Working Party. By the time this issue of MM drops through your letter box, you should have received a questionnaire from the Parish Council. Please ensure that you have your say by returning a completed questionnaire by 4th September. A public meeting will be held in the Village Hall at 7.00pm on Friday 9th September. Kathryn

The churchyard will be full with a wide variety of exhibits dating from the 1920s to the 1980s including cars, motor bikes and historic pedal bikes. Teas will be served all afternoon in the Meeting Room and there will be displays of paintings and sketches in the Church as well a chance to try your hand at bell ringing. Background music will be provided in the churchyard by the Memphis Jazz Band and friends. Entry £5.00 adults, children up to 16 with an adult £1.00. Meldrethâ€™s Daniel Goodfellow: Olympic Medallist On the evening of 8th August my family and I spent the evening huddled around a mobile phone screen in a remote corner of Cornwall, watching the final of the 10 metre men's synchronised diving live from the Olympic Games in Rio. With no television in the house that we have rented annually for the past fifteen years, this was our only means of keeping up with the latest development in the extraordinary diving career of Daniel Goodfellow, who spent all his years of primary education at Meldreth. Mrs Samways (nee Harrison) romantically imagines that he may have made some of his Dan (left) and Matthew, first strokes in the outdoor learning pool that pictured on a Primary we have fought so hard to keep open over School trip to Derbyshire the years, but certainly, from a very young age, Daniel and his twin brother Matthew were arriving at school every morning having already spent an hour on the boards at Parkside Pool in Cambridge, embarking on a diving career which for Dan in particular, would dominate his childhood years. In 2005, when the boys would have been nine, I recall spending a lunchtime in my classroom in July, desperately trying to tune into the live news on the class PC (with the help of a young Andrew Betts) to discover whether Britain had been successful in its bid to host the 2012 Olympics. Upon the announcement that London had beaten Paris to secure the games, we set off running around school in delighted disbelief shouting the news to all and everyone who was interested. Seven years later, I miraculously found myself, with family in tow, at that remarkable opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford. Barely sixteen, Daniel's day had not yet arrived, but I felt delighted and proud as I opened the official glossy programme to find a full page picture of Dan - in mid-dive - singled out as 'one to watch' for the future â€Ś and so we did! In school Daniel, like his brother, was a clever, hardworking and determined boy - a brilliant all round sportsman, too. He and Matt guaranteed the school success in three consecutive local schools' swimming galas; they seemed to complete their lengths while their 4

opponents' ankles were still dry! I also recall that Daniel had this extraordinary ability to do a full 360° backflip and land back on his feet - a feat he would frequently dazzle us with! He was a fiercely loyal brother too. If ever I had cause in class to call out Matt's name for some minor misdemeanour, Dan would spring out of his seat to demand what the problem was and to deny any wrong doing on Matt's part at all. Just before the boys completed their final year at Meldreth, they both came on the school residential trip to the Peak District in Derbyshire. We attended an open air swimming pool in the village of Hathersage where, unlike most pools, diving was allowed. Dan promptly climbed the steps and performed what looked to us like a perfect Olympic quality dive with tucks and somersaults and twists. A shrill screech on the lifeguard’s whistle welcomed Dan to the surface. "Learn to dive first, sonny, before you try the fancy stuff" came the lifeguard's rebuff! The irony was not lost on us! As the boys moved on to MVC, we kept track of Daniel's progress and successes. Our trophy cabinet features photographs and news cuttings reflecting some of his triumphs over the years. More recently, I chewed my nails through the European Championships in May where Dan, now partnering the iconic diving poster boy, Tom Daley, narrowly missed gold and waited with nervous trepidation for the Olympic Finals in Rio! It was certainly a strange feeling on the night of 8th August, pride and hope combined, as I peered into that mobile phone screen, close to Land’s End and then straight across the Atlantic to Rio where the diving finals were taking place. With mounting anxiety we watched, powerless to help, as the contest unfolded. With Daley and Goodfellow resting in fifth place as the final dive approached, I recognised at once that familiar expression of stony resolution as Dan stepped out onto the high board with Tom Daley for his final dive that night. Our jangling nerves exploded into elation as we watched a near perfect dive become converted into an Olympic Bronze medal … and yes … tears of joy were shed! Within seconds my phone was alive with colleague after colleague from school texting emotional messages of delight from their holidays around the world. I imagined crowds cheering in The British Queen and a ripple of joy spreading through the village. It was a glorious Meldreth moment - and one we shall never forget! Aurora Meldreth and Orchard Manor Annual Fete Saturday 24th September This year we are going all out. The students and staff here at Meldreth Manor have been very busy over the last month coming up with different ideas to make this year’s annual fete go with a bang. We have a range of entertainment confirmed including a Korean martial arts display from Melbourn Tang So Doo club and live music supplied by the MVC choir and their big Band. We then have our own students performing in “Orchard Got Talent”. The gates open at 1.00pm with the grand opening at 1.15pm by the CEO of The Aurora Group. The BBQ and hog roast supplied by “Davey’s Butchers” will be kicking off at 1.00pm so why not come down to have lunch. We have all the regular stalls planned including tombolas, raffles, cakes and many different games. We will have bouncy castles, steam train rides and the animals from Shepreth Wildlife Park. We have “Herts Blood Runners” bringing a selection of their motorbikes. We also have driving lessons in the main car park for anyone over the age of 14 supplied by Keyhole’s School of Motoring” who have very kindly offered to support us again, so all those budding young drivers why not come down to have a go? We have also opened up the fete to outside stalls/stands. There are still spaces available both in the inside craft arena and outside with the fete. Royston & District Motorcycle Club The Royston and District Motorcycle Club hosted a presentation evening on 20th July to various charities following their annual Bike Show which was held on 15th June. In presenting the cheques, Show co-ordinator Mark Coningsby explained that in spite of a poor weather forecast for the show event held at the Eternit Sports and Social Club, the show was a success with over 1500 people attended, raising over ÂŁ8,000 for charity. I hope they reflect what a creative and diverse time we have all enjoyed in school over the year! Andrew Jones Deputy Headteacher My very first memory in Robin Class was being in Elmer the Elephant’s house in our role play area.—Maya My favourite thing this year is swimming because I like the froggy float. —Liam, 5 I really, really, really like choosing the playdough because you get to make ice creams.—Bailey, 4 I liked writing, drawing and colouring. I liked that it made my brain work.—Sienna, 5 I have really liked dressing up for special days because I could pretend I was a princess.—Maya, 5 I liked the woods learning because we made stick stuff like wind chimes.—McKenzie, 5 My best thing is writing about dinosaurs. I really liked finding the dinosaur bones in the school garden.—Harry, 5 I liked playing with Sam at school because he’s my friend.—Rennie, 5 My favourite thing was going to the Bird of Prey centre. I liked the White Tailed Eagle, the Bald Eagle and the Chilly Blue Eagle!—Sean I also liked the flying show and the lunch where we got to see a gecko and a tarantula.—Sean My favourite thing in Kingfisher Class is when you get to take the kingfisher home and take pictures of him.—Lukas I loved doing sewing with Mrs Maskell, because that’s a challenge. —Oscar

My favourite thing inside the classroom was the nativity because you can express yourself. My favourite thing outside the classroom was going to the Fitzwilliam Museum.—Eve I loved it when we cooked Mexican Food with Mrs Millington and we had a Mexican festival.—Charlie W I loved learning about World War I. We went and read the names on the war memorial 100 years after the Battle of the Somme began in July.—Phillippa I liked going to Sutton Hoo and learning about the Anglo Saxons – I really like learning about history.—Daniel F We did a triathlon and everyone in the school had to run and swim and ride a bike and that was brilliant.—Lola B We put on Robin Hood and the Sherwood Hoodies as our end of year production. There were some great jokes and funny moments. We had such a fab time!—George C We had the day of Bikeability games. The team brought a mix of bikes from tandems to unicycles. One of the bikes was like a giant wheelbarrow bike. We sat in the front over a single wheel which made it really unstable. The Bikeability man cycled us round the playground but eventually the bike toppled over and we fell out! —Evie LM & Abi B Meldreth School Football team, also known as Mr Jones’ purple army, went to London to play in the East of England schools football tournament. We came 3rd. Now that was a magnificent achievement—Oscar, Kurt, James Mrs Willan bought us all chips on the last night in Scarborough and we sat on the beach and ate them, walking back to the hotel in the dark. —Georgia M Widdershin’s puppet theatre came to school just before Christmas and did The Elves and the Shoemaker. My favourite character was the cheeky little mouse that kept eating the cheese!—Ruby S We won the Bikeability Cycle to School challenge and the prize was a cycling cinema show. We had a huge screen playing Wallace and Gromit and we all had to take it in turn to cycle fixed bikes as the power for the sound of the film came from pedal power!—Neo & Liam

Melbourn Area Youth Club Melbourn Area Youth Club is open and free to all 11-18 year olds, and meets from 7.00 to 9.00pm at the very lovely refurbished pavilion on Melbourn Recreation Ground. This popular club resumes for term time on 18th September. County Councillor’s Report Next Meldreth, Shepreth and Foxton Rail User Group meeting This will take place on 20th September at 7 for 7.30pm, at Melbourn Village College. All welcome! Our aim is to get the powers that be on board with the idea that all three stations need serious upgrades to accommodate the huge surge in capacity that is already happening (10% growth in footfall each year) and set to take off from 2018 when we get twice hourly off-peak, 8-car trains. Thank You to Station Gardeners Without our volunteers who keep flower tubs well-watered, we would not have had such lovely displays to enjoy all summer long. Thank you very much to our Melbourn Village College Duke of Edinburgh volunteers at Meldreth Station, Toby and Max Walker and Sam and Aidan Luebcke. Local Businesses Supporting Cycle and Rail Travel Following on from the news that Astrazeneca is to begin sponsoring maintenance of our new cycle paths, it is great to report another local business’s support now in the pipeline: Reed Autos, situated on the A10 in Foxton, on the occasion of its Open Day on 22nd September from 3.00-7.00pm to promote its new body shop and ironically honouring ‘World Car Free Day’, has enthusiastically agreed to help promote cycle and rail travel along the A10. At the time of writing we’re awaiting final confirmation of the practical measures that Reed’s will put into place, but details will be announced soon… watch this space! Meanwhile, Teacake and Shepreth Wildlife Park both provide flower tubs at Shepreth Station, and Bury Lane and Phillimore always help us out with supplies for Meldreth Station. The consultation is open until Monday 10 October, and asks for views on an ‘eight-point package of measures to tackle congestion’ in Cambridge. Of particular interest will be proposals for Peak-time Congestion Control Points (PCCPs). 16

Cameras with automatic number plate recognition would be located at fixed points in the city and drivers passing those points in peak hours would be subject to a fine. The suggested locations are on Queens’ Road, Grange Road, East Road, Hills Road, Mill Road and Coldhams Lane. Buses, taxis, bicycles and emergency vehicles would be exempt. The proposals also include a Workplace Parking Levy – an annual fee charged to employers with staff parking spaces. The level of the fee, and the number of parking spaces at which the fee would start to be levied, have not yet been suggested, but the consultation points to Nottingham as an example, where employers with more than 10 employee parking spaces pay an annual fee of £375 per space, and can choose to pass that cost on to their employees. A peak time congestion charge at entry points to the city, which could have generated income for an attractive bus service in the wider area, was rejected by the three City Deal Board members. A consultation event will be held at Melbourn Village College on 14th September, from 5.00 to 7.30pm. Basic information is also available through leaflets at the Melbourn Hub or the Clerk. New Path to Meldreth Station For those of you following planning news, you may have seen that the planning inspector has ruled in favour of an appeal for 199 houses off New Road Melbourn. While the village was strongly opposed to the application on the basis of concern about public infrastructure coping with a significantly increased population, good work was done to ensure a decent developer contribution toward improving public infrastructure. Key for knock-on effects in Meldreth will be a significant upgrade to the footpath across the field to Meldreth Station, which we hope will encourage more people to walk not drive now that the station car park is often full. Goalball at Melbourn Village College Through continuing liaison with Camsight, we’re looking forward to welcoming Warren Wilson at Melbourn Village College on 27th September to teach goalball skills. This is an Olympic sport, played by a combination of sighted and visually impaired people. Warren will be fresh from attending the Paralympics in Rio (not as an athlete, he hastens to say, though he is an avid goalball player). Hearing directly from him about his experiences there will only add to the excitement of the success of Meldreth resident and former MVC student Dan Goodfellow, Bronze Medallist in the diving competition (see pages 4-5 in this issue). Drains There has been a lot of talk about jetting drains ever since last spring. I’m assured that all the streets that have been logged for jetting will get done, but it is taking much time to get round everywhere – the waiting list is months long. Unfortunately this is a reflection of the state of County Council finance, where keeping council tax down as low as possible, against a total switch-off of central government maintenance support, has negative consequences. News from Heidi Allen www.heidisouthcambs.co.uk They say a week is a long time in politics but within the last few months I am sure we have all had enough politics to last us a year! It would be impossible for me to write this newsletter without referring to the recent EU Referendum. I received an unprecedented amount of correspondence following the vote from mostly, although not by any means all, disappointed and worried constituents. As I was unable to reply individually to every email, I held public meetings in Cambourne and Duxford instead, so thank you to everyone who came along. Videos of the meetings and information regarding constitutional issues and policy areas are on my website for those who could not attend. Since the result, I have held further meetings with representatives from our Councils, academic, science, health and agricultural sectors. Whilst we do not yet have an outline of the terms of negotiation, I am sure they will start to emerge when the House returns after summer recess in September. I will continue to listen to the needs of all sectors and ensure the needs of South Cambridgeshire are at the heart of the Cabinetâ€™s negotiations. Onto the more light hearted duties of your constituency MP, I was delighted to be invited to pull the first pint at the Shelford Feast. The event was part of a week-long series of fundraising events and not only did they raise an incredible amount of money (I believe they are still counting!) I managed to remember how to pull a pint! Just ahead of breaking for the summer holidays, I was able to visit three more schools in Stapleford, Trumpington and Guilden Morden. I am slowly getting around, so please bear with me if I havenâ€™t visited your school yet! The hard work and commitment of teachers, parents and 20

governors is always plain for me to see so I was absolutely devastated when our new Secretary of State Justine Greening announced that the Department for Education would delay the introduction of the new Fairer Funding Formula for another year. Although Justine was very clear that no local authority would receive less funding than the top up amount we had received this year, I have asked officers at the County Council to digest what this will mean for us in real terms. I want to assure you that I am supporting our schools 100% on this and am seeking to meet with her as soon as possible. Do you know someone who might like to join TEAM ARTHUR and become part of an extraordinary future? Arthur Rank Hospice Charity needs to bolster their fabulous volunteer team, ahead of moving to their new hospice home in Shelford Bottom! Volunteers have been at the heart of the Hospice since it first opened its doors on the Brookfield Hospital site on Mill Road 35 years ago. It started with just a handful of volunteers and now the Hospice replies on a fantastic team of over 360 who support the clinical, fundraising and administrative teams. Often it is their presence and warm welcome which can help normalise experiences for those receiving the Hospice’s care. As the building springs up at Shelford Bottom - with a footprint of 2500 m2, a total floor area of 5000m2 over two floors, twice the number of patient beds and around three times the amount of outdoor and garden space - the need for a new influx of volunteers has become increasingly physically apparent. There are some exciting new roles created by the Hospice’s move to their new home, including patient group activity leader, education receptionist, education assistant, café assistants and meet and greet representatives. We also need to strengthen the number of volunteers helping with driving, gardening, afternoon tea, the Inpatient Unit, reception, the shops, bereavement support and fundraising. Even just 2-3 hours of your time each week or fortnight could make such a difference! Looking Ahead: The Joan Gipson Challenge Are you a chutney maker? Do you have a supply of tomatoes? At the Church fete next summer there will be a new competition for the best jar of chutney made to Joan Gipson’s previously secret recipe. Joan left the recipe to her granddaughter Laura with a message saying ‘For you to make when I am dead and gone.’ The family have kindly agreed to share the recipe with us and using it seems a good way for us all to remember Joan. Joan Gipson’s Tomato Chutney Ingredients: 2lb large tomatoes 2lb cooking apples 1lb onions 8oz sultanas 1lb brown sugar 1 tbsp salt 1 tsp dry mustard 1 tsp ground ginger 1½ pints pickling vinegar Method: 1. Skin the tomatoes (leave in boiling water for a minute or so). 2. Peel, slice and core the apples. Chop the onions. 3. Put tomatoes, apples and onions with the sultanas in a food processor and chop finely. Put all the ingredients into a large pan with the vinegar, spices and salt and cook slowly for 3 to 4 hours until thick. 4. Put into clean jars and seal when cool.

Letters to the Editor Mettle Hill The Parish Council is currently considering two projects which, depending on outcomes, will have impacts on our community. The larger of the two, the proposed development of the Marley Eternit site, is now under active consideration whilst the other, the Mettle Hill site, is a long-standing issue. I am writing to you about Mettle Hill as I have been asked by my colleagues on the Parish Council to lead a new working group to help determine its outcome. This has now been formed. Priority will be given by the Council to addressing the Marley Eternit proposals but in the meantime the Mettle Hill group will be undertaking more detailed work and research on the options we have for that site. Iâ€™d like to acknowledge the considerable work already done to gather opinions on Mettle Hill and to thank residents for their contributions. The recent consultation questionnaire has given us valuable insights into opinion, especially in the form of the many narrative comments we received. There were, for example, distinct preferences not to sell the site but to retain it to generate a regular income for the community, perhaps leasing it for other uses, recognising the income producing potential whilst noting many preferences for village amenity use. The Mettle Hill group is keen to recommend an outcome with which the majority of village residents would find some favour and we will be working towards that objective. The outcome cannot be predicted at this early phase of the next stage, but we hope that a composite solution can perhaps be part of the agenda. Devolution. Is it Really? A system whereby power is handed down from the centre to those nearer the grass roots and enabling authorities like Parish, District and County Councils to make decisions that closely affect their communities. That is what devolution means. Sadly, when we look closely at what is being promised to us at the present time in the name of devolution throughout the country we find another picture. A further tier of power has been created above the local councils and therefore further remote from the citizens they represent. A mayor or super autocrat is now appearing on the scene endowed with the final say for all major local services. I now understand why central Government was becoming so enthusiastic about passing over their powers. This new appointment, unlike the normal mayoral position, is above the councils, not simply leading them. In fact we are seeing the creation of a new sort of dictator, which is not what democracy wants to be functioning above its elected representatives in the name of devolution. It wants true devolution. What is wrong with our present local government and why should we be expected to pay for yet another unnecessary official. Are we ever likely to see the real thing? Meldreth Neighbourhood Watch Reported in The Times: "Owing to the soaring rates of cybercrime, Britons are now ten times more likely to be the victim of cyber fraud than of theft from the person. An estimated 5.8 million fraud cases and cybercrimes were committed in England and Wales last year, out of a total of 12 million crimes." Scams and frauds can come in many different forms, as we try to illustrate in these articles each month. A Meldreth resident recently received a letter claiming to be from the Peoples Postcode Lottery, informing them that they had won ÂŁ285,000. The head office address was given as Brussels, with a London contact address. The letter requested that the "winner" should phone to claim their prize. Luckily, the "winner" had suspicions so didn't call, but took the letter to their bank, who confirmed that it was a scam. If they had called the number on the letter, then bank account details may have been requested. Note that there is a real Peoples Postcode Lottery, but you won't win a prize unless you've bought a ticket! Never give out any personal or financial details in response to any unsolicited communication (phone call, letter or personal visit). If something looks too good to be true, then it probably is. If you're not sure, then talk to somebody else for advice. If you're not sure who to talk to about a possible scam, then there is a group of trusted contacts who you can call. Graham Peter Linda Tim

Notes From a Small Garden Jim is taking a little break from writing this column, but I’m hoping that he will want to start again once the autumn comes. He’s been very busy in his garden and we have been visiting each other’s patches in the last couple of weeks, sharing our successes and failures. First of all; losses. No apricots or peaches this year, which has been most disappointing. Also some apple trees have borne much less fruit than usual, notably my old Cox tree, whereas my Discovery, and my nearly new Crispin and the old Worcester Tydeman are covered. I followed the instructions for pruning my two-year-old peach tree from the RHS Pruning and Training, a fully illustrated plant-by-plant manual by Christopher Brickell and David Joyce. This is a really excellent book and very easy to follow: no gardener should be without it! The August edition of The Garden, the RHS journal, is full good advice for August and September: successful hedge trimming, the tastiest blackberries and hybrid berries (our very kind neighbours allow us to hitch their Himalayan Giant over our fence, so we don’t even have to go down the lane nowadays to pick them in the hedges, the crop is so abundant) and flowers for cutting. I went to Tatton Hall, near Manchester recently with my sister. It was two days before the show opened, but it is still a lovely park to visit and it was thrilling to find that the glasshouses and conservatories were manufactured by her great-grandfather’s firm Foster Person Greenhouses. They have been restored and are in beautiful condition. Regarding shows, I know several people in the village have been to Chelsea and the Hampton Court shows and much enjoyed them. Propagation is my theme this month. Collecting seeds is always fun and I save my cellophane card covers to store them in a tight tin, which is kept in the larder. The yield from each plant has much improved since! Thank you to Margaret Lynch. Seeds which do well in my hands are sweet peas, orach or purple spinach, and Borlotti beans. This year I am spending more time on cuttings. Timing seems to be crucial for many species. Use a sandy mixture and decide whether you are using a soft or hard cutting, dipping them in Hormone powder (note: I must buy a new supply as mine is at least 15 years old!) and then planting on the edge of the pot are important. This prevents rotting of the cutting as water 36

tends to settle more towards the centre of the pot. Sometimes, leaving a plant to root on water for a week or two is successful as with “mother of thousands” and watercress. Things to do in September: Divide herbaceous perennials Collect and sow seed from perennials and hardy annuals Dig remaining potatoes before slug damage spoils them Net ponds before leaf fall gets underway Keep up with watering of new plants, using rain or grey water if possible. Melbourn & Meldreth Women’s Group Our July meeting was a games evening in Melbourn and although we were few in number it was a relaxed evening and a chance to have a laugh and chat with friends. Our September meeting will be on 27th in Holy Trinity Meeting room in Meldreth and begins at our usual time of 7.45pm. We will have a talk from someone who used to work for Norman Hartnell and we are looking forward to that. We are a small friendly group and meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month, except in December. We vary our venue between Melbourn and Meldreth. Meldreth WI Our August speaker was Ellee Seymour who has written a series of books entitled 'The Shop Girls' and Ellee told us about the research she did for the series. The stories are based loosely on the life of George Hayworth who owned one of the large department stores here in Cambridge, firstly in Burleigh Street then in 1928 in Sydney Street. The shop was noted for its millinery department, being a favourite of the Marchioness of Cambridge who would go in and order five very expensive hats to match the colours of her dresses bought at M&S! It was also very popular with the gypsy mothers visiting Midsummer Common. They would buy very expensive dresses for their daughters to wear at the fair. Could that have been the beginning of 'My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding'? At the meeting it was announced that the darts season will soon be upon us: any member interested should let Mrs Fallon know. Also mentioned was one of the many 'scams' which seem to be around these days! Should you receive a letter from 'Peopleâ€™s Postcode Lottery' ignore it. The telephone numbers are correct but that is about all and soon you will get a deluge of un-solicited mail ready to put into your blue bin caddy. Duxford Saturday Morning Music Workshop duxfordsaturdayworkshop.org.uk If you’d like to be a blower, twanger, scraper, singer or actor, come and start your journey on 17th September! Duxford Saturday Music Workshop offers junior and adult would-be musicians the chance to learn one of more than 20 different instruments at Duxford School on Saturday mornings during term-time. From late-September onwards, Workshop holds group tuition sessions, where children from Year Five onwards are helped to learn an instrument. There is also a ‘junior music group’ for children from Year 1 upwards, as well as classes for adult beginners and several groups for “improvers.” In addition to the tuition classes, there are also groups ranging from junior drama and an adults community choir to a recorder group and jazz and wind bands plus a full orchestra. Workshop is a registered charity (so support from donations, bequests and sponsored marathon runners is always welcomed!) and is all about learning and performing together in an inclusive and supportive environment. Members include adults who have always wanted to learn an instrument but haven’t previously had the opportunity, alongside those who learned as children but “gave up and haven’t played for donkeys’ years.” Since its foundation over forty years ago, several thousand musicians have begun their musical adventure at Duxford Workshop; so why not you? Even if you think you’re only slightly ‘musical,’ so long as you’re keen there is almost certainly an instrument that you can successfully learn to play. So come and join Workshop and see what you can achieve! Even if you’d like to learn but don’t have an instrument of your own, all is not lost! Workshop has a selection of string and wind instruments which are available for members to hire at reasonable rates, including most of the range played in bands and orchestras, such as flutes, guitars, clarinets, saxophones, trombones, oboes, violins and recorders. Workshop also welcomes experienced musicians who would like to help our learners and to broaden their own skills. So, if you are a musician who may be interested in joining the crew and helping others to learn to play, Workshop is currently appealing for a few more volunteer instrumental tutors, so please, make contact with the Director, Arwen 48

Getting Your Dog Ready for Fireworks Night … But it’s only September! Many dog owners only think about how to help their pet during the noisy first week of November, in the noisy first week of November! And although there are things you can do to help at that time, if you have a noise phobic dog, then the time to start making a plan is actually about now. A fearful dog may become clingy to their owner, tremble, run away or attempt to escape, pace around the house or pant excessively. If your dog displays any of these signs then it may be worth starting some simple behavioural therapy now that will help them through the loud season in a couple of months time! Sound Therapy A safe, effective and easy to use plan can be put in place, starting now which gets your dog used to the noise of fireworks, using the noise of fireworks! The DogsTrust (www.dogstrust.org.uk) have partnered with a company called “Sounds Scary” which provides recorded sounds that can be used to desensitise the dog to the noise. You basically start off at a very low volume and over a number of weeks increase this so that they are ready when 5th November arrives in all its glory. Full details of how to do this are available on the website where there is a downloadable booklet. The sounds can also be downloaded to use free of charge. I have had first hand experience of this with very good results and it’s definitely worth a try! Medical Therapy There is a synthetic pheromone available which mimics the chemical emitted when a bitch feeds her pups. It’s called Dog Appeasing Pheromone and has a reassuring effect on dogs. It’s available as a spray, as a plug in diffuser and also as a collar (Adaptil). Personally I find the spray sprayed onto a bandana and the tied around the neck of the dog gives the best effect. This can be used alongside other techniques including other medications that mimic the protein found in bitches milk, called Zylkene, to really help in fireworks season, but therapy is best started a good month or so before things start going bang in the night! make your dog more comfortable on the night by creating a den area, distracting them with games and toys, closing the curtains, keeping them indoors, etc. Gone are the days of sedating dogs on fireworks night. There are many things we can do for them now and the above website links are a good place to start. Your veterinary practice, as ever will be happy to give advice, but the time is now, don't leave it until 4th November because unfortunately you may struggle to find something that works for your dog and he may not be having as much fun as everyone else, especially as fireworks don't seem to be just on one night anymore, but go on for a fortnight! What can you do? Weâ€™re urging residents and those passing through rural areas to keep a careful watch. Do you see someone acting suspiciously around stores of hay or straw? Is there an unusual vehicle near farm buildings? Become a community member of Arson Watch and keep an eye on stacks in your area.
