Friends of Holy Trinity (FOHT)

The FOHT held their 37th AGM on Friday 12th May 2023. With a couple of missed AGM years, the Friends have now operated for nearly 40 years. The Friends’ aims are to provide financial support for the maintenance and improvements of the historic church building, and to organise activities at the church for the involvement and entertainment of the local community.

The Friends have made significant contributions towards these aims over the years through a varied programme including talks, presentations, suppers, open garden days and, over the past eighteen years, the hugely popular Classic Car Show, held in the church grounds. This event has been instigated, investigated, motivated and organised almost single-handedly over the years by John Price, Vice Chair of the Friends for 25 years now. (The Chair is always the incumbent local vicar.)

The Car Show day is now a well-rehearsed activity with a regular bunch of helpers. What goes unseen, however, is the huge investment John makes throughout the year, networking with fellow classic car enthusiasts and encouraging them to participate in our Meldreth event. This enthusiasm and persistence is special and unique.

At the meeting John announced his retirement from the role of Vice Chair. Steve Hawkins proposed a vote of thanks for the enthusiastic involvement John has brought to the Friends over the years. This was fully supported by those present. I was voted in as the new Vice Chair. John is a huge act to follow! Fortunately John will be staying on the committee, ‘without portfolio’ and will continue with a keen interest in the car show, with music from his band, whenever possible.

I approach this new role with some trepidation! Interest and involvement in local churches is challenging, whether from a religious or any other angle. We on the committee of the Friends will continue to try to organise events villagers may be interested in, but we are always looking for ideas, so please get in touch. I look forward to hearing from you.
