Editorial Welcome to the June issue of Meldreth Matters. As we approach the summer solstice, the longer days present plenty of opportunities to get out and about and explore our village. Buttercup-filled Topcliffe Meadow is looking wonderful at the moment and I couldn’t resist putting a photograph of it on the cover of this month’s magazine! Melwood, our Local Nature Reserve, is also a beautiful area and Jim Reid’s informative article on pages 4-5 highlights some of the wild flowers growing there that you may have missed. Melwood’s Hidden Gems The steady work of the Melwood Conservation Group is slowly but surely increasing the range of wild flowers now inhabiting Melwood but it is all too easy to miss many of them. The small dark purple flowers of Dusky Cranesbill are scattered along path edges and visible through much of April, May and some into early June but because they are small and the surrounding vegetation may be tall, you need to look to find them. This species has spread well from a few plants introduced about eight years ago. Ransoms, or Wild Garlic as it is also known, occurs in just three clumps at present but may have been present in the wood for many years. The biggest clump is in the base of elm scrub near to the seat and is overgrown for much of the year but becomes more obvious once in flower, typically at the end of April or early May. A second plant is further into the wood and a third was discovered on the opposite side of the wood during the May working party this year. The Conservation Group made attempts to introduce Wood Anemone (pictured) about five years ago but very few plants appeared the following year. It was thought all had perished in soil that was insufficiently organic and too dry. Two years ago a few leaves were spotted in one of the planting sites and last year there were two blooms. Flowers were present again in April this year but far more surprising were the two blooms seen on the opposite side of the wood. I do not recall plants ever being introduced in that area, which is not far from where the new specimen of Ransoms was discovered. The spread of the genuine English Bluebell is very slow, despite large numbers grown from seed but we will continue with further plantings in the hope that one day we may have something that can fairly be referred to as a “bluebell wood”. Spanish bluebells may then have to 4

be removed to keep the strain pure. In the meantime, the Spanish species provides some colour after the daffodils have finished. Another far from obvious success is the Single-flowered Leek. From a few plants salvaged from a threatened Cambridgeshire roadside verge, little groups, with their strange white flowers, are appearing in many parts of the wood. This plant, like some other members of the onion family, produces small bulblets from the flower head as the flowers die and these can grow into new plants when they drop. The spread may be due to these tiny bulbs being carried around the wood by mice and voles or possibly in the tread of the boots of workers in the conservation group. So far we do not appear to have lost many plants to dogs or foxes, which may eat garlic and onions when suffering from stomach troubles. Away from the botanical interest, the year has also got off to a good start for the butterflies. Peacock and Brimstone butterflies made an early appearance and Orange tips were in good numbers. The holly blue was recorded but seems to be far more at home in gardens. By mid April the Speckled Wood was present in sunny areas and along the sunny side of the meadow, confirming its status as the woodâ€™s most consistent resident and a Red Admiral in mid-April was the first example of this migratory species I have seen this year. I suppose there is not much surprise in this, considering the periods of strong southerly air-flow Britain has enjoyed from time to time during early 2019. The crunch time for butterflies may well be July and August, when we see the effects of the hot dry summer of 2018, which scorched the grassland to a crisp at the time when many butterflies needed their caterpillars to be establishing on clumps of grass in which they may feed until the following spring. Notes From a Small Garden I thought I would start with tulips; flowers which have never done well in our garden, mainly because the muntjacs love them! But this year I went to town and planted them out in November in tubs. The tulip below, a parrot tulip called Estella Ryman, has flowered beautifully for a month now, and was undamaged by the frosty nights we had in late April and early May. Parrot tulips were all the rage in Holland in the 17th century and people bid astronomical sums for one bulb. But alas, the bottom fell out of the market and many people lost small fortunes. One man who lost money was John Tradescant, the great gardener and plantsman after which Tradescantia is named. But what to do with tulips once their flowers are gone but they havenâ€™t lost their green stems and leaves? I need the pots for other June and July gems! Margaret Lynch lifts her tulips while they are still green, puts them in a dug trench and covers them with sand and compost until the leaves and stems completely disappear. Then is the time to lift them, dry them off and keep them in a cool dark place until you plant them out in November. If youâ€™ve no room for a trench, try planting the tulips still green but having lost their flowers, in plastic pots and hide them away in the garden until they are ready for drying. But be careful to label your tulips. Itâ€™s all easier said than done! June must be the month for roses. Being a rose fan myself, I long for the morning when I can wander round the garden and see which flowers are coming out. David Austin roses seem to do best in Chiswick End and almost all my roses have been bought from them. I have replaced almost all my old much-loved French roses; their main disadvantage was that they only flowered once in the season. Interestingly, some David Austin plants are more robust than others, although they all flower at least twice and last year in that hot summer, some flowered three times. This last winter I rescued Princess Alexandra and replanted her in a pot. I had just two flowers from her 6

last year, beautiful pink and apricot in colour. The pink spindleberry had almost completely smothered her! But now she looks so healthy in her pot, has lots of buds and two beautiful strong new shoots. But I shall not keep her in a pot and have already earmarked a place where there is plenty of room, to replant her when we get to winter. Keeping roses in pots or tubs generally requires lots of attention and feeding, and there is enough to do without being a nursemaid to plants, even if they are your favourites. Jobs for June: 

Keep deadheading roses

Keep pots well watered and feed them once a week; “feed on Fridays”, but be water wise.



Hoe borders regularly to keep down weeds; this saves time on weeding by hand, but be careful not to hoe out your precious plants by mistake!



Prune many spring flowering shrubs



Pinch out side shoots of tomatoes and feed once a week



Plant up hanging baskets and also keep them well watered and feed regularly

Have Fun and Make a Difference This year’s family-friendly Annual Awareness Ride takes place on Sunday 9th June, setting off from Trumpington Park and Ride at 10.00am and riding along the evolving A10 cycleway to the front field at Phillimore Garden Centre for refreshments. Marshals will be stationed at junctions to help guide the way. Please get in touch if you’re able to help as a marshal. If you’re wondering how to connect from Trumpington to Hauxton/ Harston via the Country Park cycle path, or where best to cross the A10 at Shepreth, here’s the perfect opportunity to find out. Once again, due to safety concerns, we’ve decided against a RoystonMelbourn segment of the Awareness Ride. However, we’re pleased to announce that the Greater Cambridge Partnership’s consultation on the ‘Melbourn Greenways’ project, which is about improving the A10 and other cycle corridors fanning out from Cambridge, will be launched on the same day. A team of cycling officers will be on hand at Phillimore’s with a map of A10 route and consultation forms to fill out: we need to demonstrate strong support in order to gain improvements. In particular, this is an important opportunity to achieve a safe MelbournRoyston cycle link. If you can’t make the ride, please do come along to Phillimore’s anyway to enjoy refreshments and learn more about improving cycling conditions along the A10 corridor. Friends of Holy Trinity www.foht.org.uk Friday 10th May - AGM At the AGM Robert Long, who has been Treasurer since 1997, retired having move to Rippon. The AGM expressed its gratitude for Robert’s management of the Friends accounts over 22 years. He leaves the reserves in very good shape; helped during the year with record receipts from both the Open Gardens and the Car Show. Friends’ funds were not called upon for fabric repairs, although projects are pending. Tim Hoole is taking over the Treasurer’s role from Robert as a PCC nominee and he is also Treasurer for the PCC. Sunday 22nd September - 15th Churchyard Car Show This year marks the 60th anniversary of the introduction of the Mini and it is hoped that a selection of models and years of manufacture can be assembled. As usual a selection of cars from the 1920s to the 1980s is planned including some sporting examples. In addition there will be motor bikes from the same era and an enlarged selection of pedal bikes. Meldreth WI We had a special guest at our meeting this month, Buddy, a Medical Detection Dog along with his owner, Geoff Lambert. Buddy, although now retired, still plays an active part by sensing when Geoff, who suffers from diabetes, is about to need treatment. Each dog takes up to 18 months to train and detect the odour of human disease such as diabetes, narcolepsy and certain forms of cancer. The dogs can detect certain smells made by their owners which indicate the need for treatment. A new training establishment has recently been opened in Milton Keynes with money raised from donations and open days. Forthcoming events were discussed, including one which has caused moans from practically all of us in this area: the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon new road. We will find out how it has been managed with the least interruption to traffic (although it doesn’t seem like that when one often sits, not moving, for what seems an age). Another project in the pipeline is a visit to the village of Westminster, a river Thames stroll and a visit to the refurbished Tate Britain. These are just some of the projects in the pipeline. Come along and see if there is anything of interest to you. Next month we will have Vanessa Mann telling us all about ‘Messages on Victorian Postcards’. Friends of Maycroft Our beautiful new building is surrounded by grass and trees in full bloom and by bulbs that have burst to the surface to add an array of colour. Nature has welcomed the opening of the new building as have the residents and their families. A lovely patio area, with wonderful tables and chairs with the added luxury of umbrellas to keep the persistent sun at bay (hopefully!), is a wonderful addition. Here, residents can enjoy the vibrant colours and fragrances of the flowers that surround the patio, enjoy afternoon tea amongst nature in a peaceful and tranquil seating area, and watch the world go by. The patio has seen much use with the recent fine, sunny weather and is a welcome addition to the new building. The inside of Maycroft is no less impressive, reminding one more of a Stately Home than that of a Care Home. Its beautiful décor and tasteful furniture, along with the exquisitely decorated rooms, would not look out of place in any glam magazine! Everyone is very proud of what has been achieved here and we hope that at our summer fete, which will be held on Saturday 27th July from 11.00am to 1.00pm, you will come and see what we have achieved and also support your local Care Home! District and County Councillors’ Reports Child and Family Zone Baby Weighing Clinics – Staff Shortages There is a national shortage of health visitors and a shortage here in South Cambridgeshire. On more than one occasion, the Baby Weighing Clinic at Orchard Road, Melbourn has been cancelled for this reason. Noise from the A10 Susan has had a complaint from a local resident living near the Melbourn bypass about increased noise levels from the nearby A10, which he believes may emanate from last year’s resurfacing of it. This resident has measured the decibel level, which has given cause for concern. This has been raised with County Highways; a site visit has now taken place with the contractor and I hope to have some information back soon. Parking on Pavements Inquiry The Transport Select Committee launched an inquiry into parking on pavements. The closing date for submissions was 14th May. Drainage Tour This is to record our appreciation for our Local Highways Officer John O’Brien who, directly after our drainage tour, ordered a jetting of all drains on our village thoroughfares. Our tour focused on ensuring that John is aware of the need to keep a watchful eye on the Stocks, High Street near the School, Whitecroft/Station Road corner and Whitecroft Road/Chiswick End. John reminded us that for the purposes of record keeping, logging drainage concerns on the CCC Report a Fault website is important. Zero Carbon Communities Grant Cabinet at SCDC has approved a new Zero Carbon Communities Grant which will provide support to parish councils and community groups for projects which will reduce reliance on fossil fuels and promote behaviour change. This is a ring-fenced fund and applications can be for sums up to £15,000. Match-funding will be encouraged but this need not necessarily be in kind, i.e. monetary sums and could also be measured by contributions of time and skills. Consideration of applications for these grants will be given by the Grants Advisory Committee and assistance and advice will be provided by the Communities team at SCDC. All projects are required to show a level of community engagement. 16

Community Rail Partnership (CRP) Our CRP is looking for businesses, families or local organizations to sponsor a tub on the station platform at Meldreth – is this something the Parish Council might consider? This involves replanting the tub twice per year and helping to look after it. We usually have a team of Duke of Edinburgh student volunteers helping with the watering. The question has also been put to Whaddon and Melbourn Parish Councils. New Shelter at Meldreth Station Do nip down to the station if you haven’t already seen the very good new shelter on the Cambridge Platform, which has been campaigned for for many, many years, including by our beloved station master David Piggott. A tub replanting day has been set for June 6. Kissing Gate and Station Access The site meeting with GTR will take place hopefully before the June Parish Council meeting, and Susan will report back. A10 Annual Awareness Ride This family friendly event takes place on 9th June, leaving Trumpington Park and Ride at 10.00am and riding out to Phillimore’s for refreshments – usually finished by around noon. If anyone would like to help out on the day, as a marshal or with refreshments, please get in touch. [See page 8.] The Melbourn Greenways consultation will be launched on the same day: this is the Greater Cambridge Partnership project that could deliver the path and bridge connecting Meldreth/Melbourn to Royston, plus other useful additions and tweaks to the A10 corridor cycle path, all the way up to the Trumpington Road Cambridge roundabout at Fen Causeway. The Greenways team will also be holding a consultation event at Meldreth Primary School, assisted by the Junior Travel Ambassador team. News From Heidi Allen, MP www.heidiallen.co.uk After an unusually warm Easter weekend and just a few Easter eggs (honestly!), we are already in May. Despite the hiatus over Brexit, itâ€™s been another busy month in South Cambridgeshire. I was absolutely thrilled to be able to visit the Royal Papworth Hospital (pictured) at their new home on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus before patients arrived. It was quite eerie, walking around an empty hospital! I was absolutely overwhelmed, not only by the new state of the art facilities but also the seamless transition from one site to another. The move has been the culmination of years of planning and effort. The staff have been working incredibly hard to make this a reality and I am so proud that we have this world class facility in our constituency. Back at the office, I also met with a number of local businesses for a round table discussion with me organised by the Federation of Small Businesses. This was a great opportunity to hear from local businesses about the current economic climate, their needs and to gain an insight into some of the challenges they are facing. It was also possible for me to update them on national policy as well as local initiatives and infrastructure improvements. As well as inviting businesses into the office to talk, Iâ€™ve recently visited Map BioPharma in Papworth Everard (pictured left). They offer consultancy services that help BioPharma and MedTech clients achieve optimal market access in the UK and Ireland. Yet another 18

example of one of our thriving businesses who contribute so much to job creation and ensure that we remain at the forefront of research and innovation. Last month, my parliamentary office and my husband Phil, made up a team at Caxton Village Hall for a quiz night! Wow – the questions were hard! I am pleased to report we didn’t come last (though not far off) but we did have a thoroughly enjoyable evening and helped to raise funds for improvements to the Hall. My most memorable appointment this month was as a member of the judging panel for Fen Drayton Primary School’s Poetry Aloud competition. The children had been taking part in Poetry for Pleasure by selecting and learning their poems, with a competition at the end of two weeks’ hard work. We cried with laughter, such was the enthusiasm and energy the children put into their recitals! It was so lovely to see how engaged the children were – from Reception to Year 6. Well done to all the children involved! I was honoured to be asked to present an award at the Cambridge United Community Trust Gala Dinner at Duxford Imperial War Museum. The Community Trust is the charitable arm of Cambridge United and they are involved in many projects which help to deliver improved health, education and inclusion. Meldreth Parish Council www.meldreth-pc.org.uk The main points of the meeting held on Thursday 2nd May 2019 are set out below in the usual summary format. The full formal minutes can be viewed in due course on the website at www.meldreth-pc.org.uk and on the Parish Council notice board; these will be presented for approval at the next Parish Council meeting. Decisions taken:  Councillors R W Goddin and R A Searles were elected by the Council to serve as Chairman and Vice-Chairman for the forthcoming year.  Noting the initiative announced by South Cambridgeshire District Council to encourage and financially support reduced carbon initiatives at parish level, the Council agreed to set up a Low Carbon Working Group to give this important subject the focus and attention it deserves.  Lysa Kemp Memorial bench: Noting that a contribution of £250 has been raised from individual donations in the community, the Council agreed to finance the balance required to purchase a bench to be installed in the Recreation Ground play area. The bench will be made of synthetic materials in the interests of long term durability, and the cost to the Council will be in the order of £800. Funding will be provided through the Council’s solar account.  Melbourn Area Youth Development: The Council agreed to consider signing the MAYD agreements at its next meeting and these will be circulated to Councillors in good time for this meeting.  Finance Working Group: The Council agreed to adopt the draft Terms of Reference and associated paper on the management of the Council’s non-financial assets.  Planning Committee: The current membership of this Committee was approved by the Council for the forthcoming year and comprises Councillors P Gilmore, R Goddin, A Land, N Pellatt and R Searles. 21

 Working Groups: The Council considered the current list of working groups and their memberships. It was noted that the Marley Eternit Working Group and the Mettle Hill Working Group had already been disbanded. The membership of the Finance Working Group was agreed as Councillors N Garner, R Goddin, R James and N Pellatt. The final list of all memberships will be prepared by the Clerk.  Recreation Ground: It was noted that there has been evidence of fly-tipping into the ditch and the Clerk was instructed to look into this and to liaise with the Police as necessary. It was noted that other issues relating to the play equipment were well in hand.  Death of a Senior National figure: The Council agreed to have a plan in place to be triggered by the death of a Senior National Figure, defined as HM the Queen and HRH Prince Philip. The use of the school flagpole will be investigated by the Clerk along with a suitable flag. Statements for publication will be prepared and held in readiness.  GDPR: The Council agreed to engage the Cambridge and Peterborough Association of Local Councils (CAPALC) to assist with this Data Protection exercise at an annual cost of £50.  Annual Meeting, Thursday 16th May 2019 in Village Hall at 7.30pm. Arrangements are well in hand and a notice erected outside the Village Hall.  Mettle Hill: The Council agreed that regular visits should be made to the site by Councillors to inspect the integrity of its boundaries. Councillor Goddin will visit in the near future.  Public use of tennis courts: The Council agreed to raise this issue with the Tennis Club with a view to reviewing the booking procedures for the use of the public court. Neighbourhood Watch Sky Box Scam We have received details of a failed scam recently attempted on a Meldreth resident. The details of the scam that follow show just how genuine a scam telephone call can appear. The victim received an unexpected telephone call and the female caller asked to speak to the victim by name. When the victim asked why, the caller gave the victim's correct date of birth and Sky customer number. (The Sky customer number may or may not have been correct; who can remember that sort of information?) The caller then said that Sky was updating and that the victim's Sky Box would stop working in seven days, but not to worry because they would send round an engineer with a new box. The victim realised that it was a scam and told the caller that they would contact Sky themselves, at which point the caller hung up. The victim contacted Sky on a genuine number and Sky confirmed that it was a scam. Fortunately, the victim handled the scam call in exactly the right way.  Don’t assume a telephone call, email or text message is authentic. Just because someone knows your basic details such as your name and address or, as in this case, your date of birth, it doesn’t mean they are genuine.  Always question uninvited approaches in case it’s a scam. Instead, contact the company directly using a known telephone number or email address. We are very grateful to the victim for reporting this attempted scam to one of the trusted contacts, because it means that we can alert others through this article. Meldreth Preschool This short half term is whizzing by, and the everchanging weather is proving an interesting challenge for the preschool. We are advising all children to bring waterproofs and sunscreen in an attempt to be prepared for all weathers, but the children are still managing to spend a lot of time in the garden. We are gradually building up a range of equipment to use in the garden and the children are spending more and more time out there, so thanks to everyone who donated equipment for our mud kitchen. A special thanks to Heather who saw our piece in the last Meldreth Matters and generously donated some gravel to help us fill our trough! It has made a good start, but we still need more to fill it up – it is a VERY big trough and we have some big plans to make it into a sensory garden and planting patch in the hope that the children will be able to grow and eat some of the results. If you are able to donate anything that we can use as drainage or any topsoil that we could grow plants in, please get in touch by emailing chair@meldrethpreschool.com and we will gratefully collect anything you can offer. Following on from learning about the life cycle of butterflies, we are now looking at other creatures which have an unusual metamorphosis with some tadpoles that the children are looking after. They will chart their progress as they grow legs and lose their tails before releasing the froglets to continue the cycle next year. Meldreth Preschool is a charity, and as such we are always keen to find ways to raise funds to buy, upgrade and maintain equipment. This site collects commission payments from online shops and pays them directly to us so it’s a really easy way for us to get money and it doesn’t cost you anything. Last month we managed to buy a new tablet with the money raised which has made it much easier for the staff to complete their observations and keep parents updated with what the children are up to. 1st Melbourn Rainbows Both of the rainbow units, the Butterflies and the Bees, have had a very busy start to the year. We had fun with home-made instruments to see what sounds we could come up with; it was a very musical evening. We started on our skill builder badge with some science experiments which included using magnets, seeing how restricting oxygen affected a candle flame, making vinegar volcanoes and trying to make plasticine float! The rainbows had a go at making their own puppets with card, fabric and lots of embellishments. It was interesting to see the different characters they created. And carrying on with the crafting, they all decorated some beautiful candles for Motherâ€™s day, which were expertly smuggled out of the meeting to surprise mums on the Sunday. We went on our annual pantomime trip to see Royston CADS perform Robinson Crusoe, (Oh no we didnâ€™t!), and even got to meet some of the cast! Also, we were delighted to be provided with a puppet show by our district, to celebrate Thinking Day, (22nd February). It was a wonderful whimsical tale from the Theatre of Widdershins, including Snow White, Little Red and a bear. The rainbows really enjoyed taking 31

part in the performance and we hope they took something away with them from the event. We were grateful to have a visit from our local Police Community Support Officer (PCSO), who went over some safety tips with the Rainbows. The girls were lucky enough to sit in the patrol car, try on a uniform and even press the siren! At the final meeting of the term, both units came together to take part in an Easter egg race. Once they had collected all of their eggs, they then had to find and arrange clues to find their prizes. Easter eggs all round! We then presented the Rainbows with their badges earned over the term, and sadly said goodbye to four Rainbows who are going on to the next stage in guiding. Stef Cooper

1st Melbourn Guides The new Guide programme comes with a wide range of interest badges which are tied in with the six programme themes. Aliya Lees is our first Guide to achieve one of these badges; she chose ‘Investigating’ which is within the ‘Skills for my Future’ theme. For this badge, Aliya turned detective by looking at fingerprints and footprints; tried chromatography as a science experiment and honed her journalistic skills by writing the following report on the Primary School’s new library. We hope that Aliya will inspire the rest of the Guides to have a look at the new badge book too! Hilary Marsh 32

MELDRETH’S LATEST LUXURIOUS LIBRARY! By Aliya Lees A new library with a book scanning system. Amazing – this brand-new library has already had many enthusiastic occupants (during the school hours). Inside this library there is a great quantity of books organised in alphabetical order. New - this library has many improvements from the old one, such as an up to date book scanning system. Next to that is one set of book shelves. On the opposite side of the room there are history, religion and scientific books with some of the Year 6 space homework. Although the Key Stage 1 library is in the same place, it has been completely renovated with an amazing den in the corner. It is still located there as it is nearer to the relevant classrooms and is another place to make reading fun. According to Mrs Howard it is thanks to the PTA that the school managed to afford this new library. For the Key Stage 2 library, the school used the money from the local authorities, instead of buying new tables and chairs. Miss Hill thinks it is better than most people’s expectations. Although it is not in place yet, there is hopefully going to be a tree house that you can read on top of and underneath. Overall, this library has been a great success. Children enjoy having books appropriate for their age group and a variety of authors to choose from. 33

Meldreth Primary School www.meldreth.cambs.sch.uk We welcomed the rain this week as our radishes peeked through the soil and the rhubarb settled in to its new home. Starting from scratch is a long process and the children have been very patient as they waited for the first seeds to germinate. During the winter months, the children made bug hotels, posters and designed the garden. Our generous PTA purchased a wormery, beds and a planting table. The children have been working hard to create a new space to grow, explore and learn. Year 1, inspired by Vivian Frenchâ€™s book Yucky Worms, explored the vegetable patch and discovered a few slippery composters! Free Musical Instrument “Taster Morning” at Duxford School on Saturday 22nd June Would you or your child like to play a musical instrument, but you aren’t sure which? Would you like to try out several instruments before making your decision? If so, Duxford Saturday Workshop Taster Morning is for you! It will take place on Saturday 22nd June 2019 from 11.00am - 12.15pm at Duxford C of E Primary School, St John’s Street, Duxford CB22 4RA. At this event, experienced tutors and players will be on hand to enthuse, encourage and allow you to have a hands on, practical experience of several instruments. They will be able to answer your questions and help you to decide which instrument is the perfect one for you. This is completely free. There is no need to book in advance, and you do not have to be a current member of the Music Workshop to come along - so just arrive and have a go! Of course, if you decide to join us for the next Workshop year, beginning in September, you will be most welcome. Our current membership rate is only £25 per year, with a weekly attendance fee of just £2 for adults and £1 for children. If you need an instrument, items from our hire stock can be borrowed for only £25 for the year. Duxford Workshop takes place at Duxford School on Saturday mornings during term-time and is very much about enjoying musicmaking in a supportive and fun environment. Melbourn Parish Council Timebank Melbourn Parish Council has a new and exciting venture, the Melbourn Timebank, whose principal goal is to bring the village and surrounding community together by sharing time and skills. In addition to Melbourn residents, we already have members from Shepreth and Meldreth and interest from people in Fowlmere and Foxton. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions and some additional information. What is Timebanking? Timebanking connects people within a community, sharing their knowledge, skills and interests. Everyone is welcome regardless of age or abilities, including local businesses and organisations. Time is the currency (1 hour = 1 credit into your Timebank account) and everyone’s time is equal so an hour of mowing a lawn is equal to an hour of learning how to knit! By connecting people who may not otherwise meet we can create mutual social and practical support networks; these in turn can help tackle loneliness and isolation with the result that members can experience an improvement in health and wellbeing by increasing their self-esteem and confidence. Such support networks can ultimately reduce the strain on public services and doctors. Timebanking is not a professional service and does not replace the need for engagement of qualified tradespeople or other professionals; it is best viewed as a friend or neighbour’s assistance with ad hoc tasks. To give you an idea of the success of Timebanking in the UK, there are 44,000 people involved, 5,900 organisations and 3.4 million hours have been exchanged since Timebanking began around 20 years ago. I don’t really need any help, what would I do with all the time credits? That is entirely up to you. Save them ‘just in case’ or donate them to the Community Pot; the Coordinator can then donate them to someone else in need. I can’t really offer anything, but I need help; can I still join? Absolutely, yes! It is very unlikely that you don’t have anything at all to offer! Sometimes it can be the small things that can help others the most. For example, just sitting and talking to someone who would otherwise be alone, or helping them tidy a cupboard that seems a

daunting task to just one person on their own, can make a big difference. I work full time; can I still get involved? Timebanking fits around your lifestyle. You can do what you can, when you can. I moved to Melbourn last year, and I have recently been appointed by Melbourn Parish Council as Timebank Coordinator. I am passionate about keeping the sense of community alive in villages and enabling people to connect with one another. I am part of your community, living here in the village, and coordinating a successful Timebank is in all our interests, so I am always keen to hear your thoughts and ideas. What future Timebank events are planned? There will be an official launch in the near future; this will be advertised locally and online once confirmed. We are also working on some new groups for members, such as an arts and crafts group and a board game group. One of our Timebank members who contributes to a number of village events throughout the year, has set up a new village website called What’s On In Melbourn (https://whatsonmelbourn.wordpress.com) to help us all find out about all the great events that are happening in our village throughout the year and to make sure that we don’t miss out. This builds on the great work of Melbourn Magazine that provides a 46

platform for local voluntary groups and organisations to reach out to the community with news of events and encourage new members. At the heart of the new website is a calendar of events that will also help organisations choose the best date for their events and avoid clashes with other events that may need support or equipment from the Melbourn Fete Committee. It also provides a one-stop-shop for residents who want to get more involved in village life and are looking for options, opportunities and how to access more information. To this end, all voluntary groups and clubs are provided with their own web page and the opportunity to link to other information and contact points. Home-Start Royston & South Cambridgeshire needs more Trustees, and this passion, coupled with common sense, is what links everyone who works to achieve the remarkable successes of this local charity. Our professional approach enables us to respond to referrals from many other agencies in the local community including health care, education, local authority and to requests from parents. The range of issues includes:  An isolated single parent with two young children, fleeing domestic abuse  A family with five children, mother unable to leave the house due to anxiety and panic attacks  A child with Autistic Spectrum Condition; mum feeling very isolated and judged unable to leave the house. Our statistics show that the weekly support from our well-trained volunteers helps restore confidence and control, leading to improved health and family relationships. As an early intervention service, we help families ‘get back on track’, thus often preventing or reducing the need for statutory services or for a child to go into care. We estimate it costs £1500 a year to provide a volunteer, whereas it costs around £3,000 a week, or £156,000 year, to fund a child in residential care. Good governance is key to providing this essential service and we provide a comprehensive induction programme for new trustees. We particularly need people with Finance, IT, HR, Social Media and Fundraising expertise.
